#5 souls ep

Text
Last week on (I believe) Friday I listened to the 5 Souls EP and then I listened to them again yesterday. I’ve since got all five of them stuck in my head at different times (Tears of Blood was the last one to get stuck in my head and only got stuck in my head because I was looking up the lyrics but I’ve had it stuck in my head all morning) and I think I have an official top 5 on the EP (yes I know that’s all five of them I just wanted to say I’m ranking them). From fifth favourite (“least favourite” sounds like I don’t like it) to favourite:
Never Forget
Creatures
Tears of Blood
Snakebite
Bring It On

I genuinely believe Naksu haunts the narrative. Her actions and existence as Naksu heavily impact the entire story. Her past, the life she lived and the shadow of it in Mudeok. But we don't actually know any of it because Naksu is not in the story.
Like. What she lost as Cho Yeong is something that we are never allowed to forget, the loss of her body, her powers, her freedom, and her impending death as a soul shifter hangs over Mudeok's head like guillotine.
All the while we don't actually know the Shadow Assassin Naksu, she died in the first episode, as soon as the story began. Other than training and killing (soul shifters) what kind of person was she when she didn't have to rely on another person else or hide or live as someone else? We don't know and we don't ever learn any of that.
Still, her absence is the plot, yet her former existence as Naksu influences everything; Yul's actions and what she was to him, Jang Uk's goal of returning her powers, the revelation of soul shifters to Park Jin, Jang Gang's departure, Jin Mu's accomplishments, the King's Star even.
Everything is about her existence but she doesn't actually exist at all anymore.

Honestly though, the way Go Won consoled Bu-yeon and tried to cheer her up when she was sad about her husband was literally the sweetest thing ever!
It was clear that she likened herself to a mere turtle, small and unimpressive. She couldn't possibly compare to the grand peacock that is Naksu/Mu-deok.
That's when he drops the tough-guy act. He tells her that he took the turtle home and found that it was clever and cute. He tells her that even if a turtle could not compare to a peacock, the turtle still had a charm of its own.
And just as he came to adore his pet turtle, surely her husband would come around to like her as well. So she should keep her chin up.
He doesn't even know who she really is. To him, she's this poor shaman lady who thinks he's a eunuch. But he still tried to make her happy simply because she was upset and felt abandoned. Even in a previous scene with the court lady, he looked worriedly at her wounds and got kinda angry about the queen lashing out at innocents. He also went as far as to investigate the powder the queen was giving to the other concubines when it has nothing to do with him.
Bu-yeon is 100% right when she said that he's a good person.

Moon in the Day is giving me major Alchemy of Souls vibes, especially the past scenes. Like Ri-ta insisting that she only cares if Do-ha is alive so she can kill him, it's so Mu-deok. And Do-ha not wanting to live and unable to sleep is like Jang Uk S2.
It's like what would happen if you had Mu-deok with S2 Jang Uk! No Sunshine in this pair. It's Furious Vengeance & Deadly but with Suicidal Depression pairing.

don’t mind me. just thinking about what the writers of iwtv gave us in season 1 and the fact that they weren’t properly compensated.

if this ends with Izzy making some kind of noble sacrifice in the name of doing his job I swear I’m gonna be so narratively satisfied. devastated. but satisfied.

y'know, looking at the fandom wiki page for the shugods, I really want an episode just dedicated to the kings working along side their kingdom's respective shugods.
because who was going to tell me that God Kamakiri can just sense people under rubble and can hear sounds of up to 160,000 hertz
or that God Tombo can see 2km in front of it?? Or God Papillon being able to camouflage?? ?
The things that can come up from this...

As an Alchemy of Souls stan, here's my contribution to what I think is an underrated love story in the show. It might be one-sided and unrequited, but it's one of my faves.
A girl from the wrong side of the tracks with Daeho's golden boy, please you know I'm eating this up.
A Seo Yul and So-i edit.
