Love that the Aranara World Quests were just full of "sht on Paimon" dialogue. The traveler and Aranaras' were just dunking on her the whole time.

My experience in playing the Aranara quest:
Tumblr media
This is something all Genshin players should read honestly. Especially the last bit.
Tumblr media
Huh.
So things like this that the Aranara have said so far about Nara Varuna
Tumblr media
And this-
Are really contradictory to their actions now in the story so far.
And it's so confusing.
Tumblr media
Bless you Arapandu. I really really hope Miyoho does too, give them a happy ending with them reunited.
Tumblr media
We already have, but I sure as heck hope we do again. I have a piece of my mind to give her.
Tumblr media
Lmao.
Didn't think I'd see the Traveler breaking the fourth wall. These are all things that have kept me up at night too...
Tumblr media
Don't we all Arapandu. Waste of perfectly good, talented voice actors.
Tumblr media
Lmao.
Maybe one day we'll get something like a genshin cooking show that the Travelers will host together 👀
Tumblr media
The first option I can't -
Im so sorry, buddy.
Tumblr media
Yeah, shut up Paimon.

//World Quest spoilers
I find it interesting and cute how the first canonically explicit queer character in genshin is a young npc girl. I love how there's no qualms about her having a crush on a girl, it's treated like any other kid having a crush on someone older who they admire. (Unless of course it's genshin's English translators and localizers doing a bad job again)

"Act Professional"
Al-Haitham x gn!Reader (small spoilers about chapter 3 Sumeru Archon Quest, written in 3.0 before the story of 3.1)
Tumblr media
In Sumeru, information is the key for everything. Researches need information for their papers. Eremites needs as reliable information as possible to complete their tasks without risk. The whole foundation of Sumeru's title as "The City of Wisdom" is based on information that the previous Archon and her citizens found.
It's the same for Al-Haitham. As much of a genius he is, his name and face is known both outside and within the Akademiya. Therefore gathering certain information can be tricky at times.
That's where you came in.
You're not a genius like Al-Haitham, but you are capable of having more inside connections than him. Being an informant has its perks.
Whether it's the Eremites, merchants, Akademiya scholars; you'll give any information they need for the sake of a paycheck, and for Archon's sake does it pay well.
Al-Haitham became aware of you from a rumor that spreads a year ago; "An informant that could tell you what you need with proof." As a man of rationale, he knew that having connections with an informant such as that would do him well.
It would be a lie to say that you don't interest him beyond your professional relationship; your latest meeting as something that he couldn't get out of his mind.
And so he became one if your regulars. Granted, finding out how to be your client is a difficult task; almost as difficult as becoming Dori's customers. Fortunately, the hard work pays off as you gave him any information and proof that he needs.
______
"My favorite client! What do you need today, pretty boy?" you called out. Teasing Al-Haitham with nicknames seems to be your favorite hobby everytime you two meet.
Al-Haitham cut to the chase, numbed to your teasing. "The words 'world...forget me,' does it seem familiar to you?"
You pondered for a moment, "not that i know of, though for a special pay I can find intel on it." You gave him a smile only merchants seeing a business opportunity could give.
Al-Haitham thought about it for a moment, "seven-hundred thousand mora, with evidence."
You faked a sad tone, "We've been working together for months and you can't trust based on my words alone? I am incredibly hurt."
After receiving an unimpressed look from Al-Haitham, you waved off his cold nature, "loosen up would you? Even Kaveh and I have more chemistry."
You stepped away from behind the building, a place that wouldn't catch other people's eyes. "I'll get it done as soon as I can. Better have my payment ready after."
_______
Meetings between the two of you usually goes that way; you tease him, Al-Haitham requests what he needs, one of you offer the payment, and you leave. The mention of his roommate is what's been bothering him.
Al-Haitham operates solely on rationality, he doesn't see any reason why he would be bothered by the mention of Kaveh. No, he definitely didn't glare at his poor roommate this morning, and the morning before. He's just in a bad mood these past few days.
It didn't help that he can't mention you to Kaveh to ask him. The deal between you and your clients is that they can't mention you, for the sake of your business' safety.
When Al-Haitham received a letter about your the next meeting time and location, his swinging moods seems to change for the positive. Kaveh is silently thanking the Gods for that.
Al-Haitham met up with you within the following days, this time inside a hidden café near Sumeru City. You were already there when he arrived, sitting cross-legged as you waited for him.
As he sat down, you begin to speak. "Nice place right? Better than behind a run down building," you started. The decorations of the café is classy for a hidden one, Al-Haitham began to grow weary. "Don't worry, I know the owners. They won't do anything."
"That's reassuring," Al-Haitham took notice that you don't have any sort of items with you, or something that could be described as evidence.
"Let's get straight to business," he started, making you chuckle.
"As stern as usual," you commented. "I couldn't find any physical evidence and the source said that they wouldn't come. So I'll say that the price would be decreased to.... around two-hundred thousand."
It's bad for business, you knew that. But even an informant like you have your own morals when it comes to selling intel.
"'World...forget me,' is coming from Irminsul. A God is related to it, about what God specifically no one knows," your past few days' research only came to that. Getting intel about a recently berserk Mizri and a strange blonde traveler with the flying mascot is hard, even if it's only two sources.
Despite the lack of supporting information, Al-Haitham seems pleased. "That's good enough, pleasure doing business with you again, (y/n)." He slid the bag of mora that you're owed, though sliding a second one right after.
"Although, I have one more question," you're confused, Al-Haitham usually leaves right when business is over. Not even sparing a moment for you to make small talk. Though it would be a lie to say you're not amused at the change.
"And that would be?"
"What's your relationship with Kaveh?"
You wanted to laugh, though kept it to yourself. You remember mentioning Kaveh at your last meeting, honestly it's adorable how a genius like Al-Haitham would be bothered by a meaningless comment.
"Oh? Using our professional relationship to ask such a private question?" You smirked, trying to prolong a feeling of superiority over Al-Haitham. You even moved closer, arms on the table as you leaned over to him.
"You did take the payment, (y/n)," Al-Haitham pointed out. He kept his composure, much to your disappointment.
You let out a chuckle, placing your finger under Al-Haitham's chin to make his head look up. You satisfy your sadistic needs by looking up at him. Al-Haitham began to sweat involuntarily. He held an unbothered, or even annoyed look. Though inside, he feels his heart racing the more his informant continue.
You took notice almost instantly, somehow being able to move your mouth directly next to his ear.
"Act professional, Al-Haitham."
You stepped right back after, an innocent smile appearing instantly. With your needed payment and an added bonus, both monetary wise and to tease your favorite client, you're completely satisifed today.
"I've only worked with Kaveh once, and i didn't like him enough to be included as my regulars."
And with that you walked away, oh so innocently.
Unfortunately you purposefully left the internally confused and flustered Al-Haitham. Such a rare moment you wishes you had brought your kamera...

Back to this post I made a while back
Spoilers under the cut for quests 2.0 through 3.0 (aka: Inazuma and Sumeru)
I wanted to point out the hypocrisy between how the game treated Scaramouche vs Ei
Starting with both of their crimes/behaviors
Ei
Abandoned her people
Allowed a war
Allowed for the Fatui to influence her nation (knowingly)
Let her puppet take away what willingly belonged to her people
Killed her people
Oppressed her people
Isolating her country
Etc.
Scaramouche
Arson
Murder
Genocide
Homicide
Attempted coup
Terrorism
Smuggling
etc.
Obviously they've both done terrible things, Scaramouche's being based almost entirely on murder and genocide while Ei was based mostly on negligence (knowingly committing negligence when in a position of power too).
But the issue I have is how the Traveler (and subsequentially, the game) treats them after revealing their resonings.
First, the reasoning
Ei
Loss of family
Depression
Grief
Poor mental state
Loss of friends
Scaramouche
Loss of family
Depression
Grief
Poor mental state
Loss of friends
Abandonment
As you can see, they both have fundamentally the same reasonings, while Scaramouche's poor actions mostly came from having a lack of understanding of how the world of humans work as well as poor role models....
...which stem from Ei's neglegence.
When confronted by the Traveler, Ei admits what she is feeling (even after knowingly trying to murder the traveler two times), she gets a meager slap on the wrist and a "don't do it again" seeing as how she has yet to actually apologize. I stopped playing in 4.0 so this could have changed.
Even after admitting to her faults and promising not to abandon her people, she does it again, and is not reprimanded. She never learned from her mistakes, never apologizes, and is even buddy-buddy with the traveler and is seen as a respectable figure despite her crimes.
Compare this to Scaramouche who is offered a job from Nahida, and is still treated as a criminal. This is understandable and he should be considering his previous actions. But when Traveler and Paimon find out why he did what he did, he is still met with hostility.
This never happened to Ei.
Only Scaramouche.
The only person who showed him any kind of sympathy was Nahida, probably because she understood what he went through.
Scaramouche even tries to amend his mistakes upon realizing them, albeit in a very self-destructive manner.
Ei never does. Sure, she repeals the Sakoku decree, but she never apologizes for stealing her people's visions, or for attacking anyone who went against the Shogun's orders, or disappearing, or for allowing a war, or for anything.
Scaramouche tried to erase himself, believing it would bring back the people he'd hurt. He shows more remorse in his actions then she does. And when his memories are returned, he says that he plans to tell Kazuha what happened, that Kazuha has a right to know.
Both committed terrible acts based on their feelings of abandonment, grief, and loss.
Only Scaramouche made any attempt to undo his mistakes and went out of his way to try and apologize.
Ei did not.
Tagging: @l4r1n3 and @stupidheadwisp because y'all asked. Enjoy the food.

Arlecchino Theories That Won't Leave My Head
So I had been waiting a long ass for Arlecchino to appear in game, and when she did, she didn't seem much like how Childe and Wanderer described her or how she first appeared in the Winter Night's Lazzo teaser trailer (until she popped off on Furina in the archon quest and was openly angry like she was in the trailer). So I kept revisiting their voicelines about her:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what can be taken from both of their statements is that Arlecchino is insane. Really insane. I mean
youtube
This level of insane. But!
I have different theories about what they meant. Childe: First, Childe says that he doesn't like Arlecchino and says that she'd betray others, even the Tsaritsa herself, if she stood to gain anything from it, making her insane. However, during the Labyrinth Warriors event, Childe had this to say:
Tumblr media
Childe outright describes himself as someone who doesn't care for allegiance and dismisses the concepts of right and wrong in favor of the euphoria of combat... which is far from sane and isn't painting him as someone who's very loyal. In the The Bad Guy of Vimara Village quest that first became available in version 3.0 in August, a month after Arlecchino was teased in the A Winter Night's Lazzo teaser in July, we learn about the ideals Arlecchino teaches her wards from Trofin:
Tumblr media
This right here? It's similar to what Childe said in his story quest about protecting the innocence of children and their dreams. So Childe has no regard for allegiance, has no qualms against disregarding what's right or wrong for the sake of the thrill of battle, and believes in letting children have their innocence and defends their dreams before they have to face the tribulations of adulthood. So why does he have a problem with Arlecchino? Hypocrisy? My first thought was that Arlecchino must've done something so bad that not even Childe wants anything to do with her.
Then I thought about those theories where Arlecchino isn't as bad as people think she is and Childe thinks she's insane because she makes her disloyalty to the Tsaritsa so obvious. When 4.0 dropped, Momoyo (who is now named "Chitose") from that The Very Special Fortune Slip world quest now has additional dialogue after you complete that quest and she tells you information she's heard where Arlecchino, who was a child of the House of the Hearth herself, had a "serious clash" with the previous Knave (known as the "Director" in Freminet's character stories) years ago and replaced her as the new head of the House. It's implied that Arlecchino killed her predecessor and if that's the case, that's brings me to my theory as to why Childe doesn't like her and thinks she doesn't have a sane bone in her body. If there's anything that Childe would cherish more than even thirst for a good fight, I'm confident that it's his family. We've seen in his story quest how much he cares for his family, especially his little brother Teucer. Family obviously means a lot to Childe. So Arlecchino killing the "Director" who raised her, killing her family, would be a step too far much for the family-oriented Childe.
Based on what we know from Freminet's character stories, the "Director" was an abusive woman to her wards, but I don't think Childe would know about that. The Harbingers aren't close and aren't always aware of what their colleagues are doing (Capitano had to ask Dottore what happened with Scaramouche and the Electro Gnosis and Dottore said he'd make his move eventually, even though he was secretly working with Scaramouche on a plan to make him Sumeru's new god). So it wouldn't be a stretch to say that Childe would be unaware of much of what goes on in the House of the Hearth other than hearing a potentially credible rumor that Arlecchino killed her parental figure.
Wanderer:
Now. Wanderer is a known hater. A self-admitted hater, no less (in his voiceline about Nahida, he admits that he tends to see the worst in people), but that didn't stop me stop me from liking him. When Scaramouche first appeared in the Unreconciled Stars event, he pretended to be nice to the Traveler and co., but said that he would have killed the Traveler had Mona not teleported them away, behaving exactly like a wolf in sheep's clothing who put on a front to deceive people, so him saying that about Arlecchino is pure hypocrisy. And about him saying she's crazy? My guy, wanting to supplant Sumeru's god in a process that would've erased who you were as a person (partially) due to centuries long unresolved mommy issues is definitely crazy. At first I almost disregarded what Wanderer said, and then that Unfinished Comedy world quest dropped and we're introduced to an NPC called "Caterpillar" with markings on his arms that are similar to Arlecchino's markings and was made that way due to experiments from someone connected to the Narzissenkreuz Ordo, an organization that wanted to create "Neo Humans" with the power of the Abyss.
He's even referred to as a "wolf in sheep's clothing" with his "true form" being that of an Anemo Hilichurl Rogue (which is odd because wouldn't his human form be his true form since hilichurls were originally humans?).
Which leads me to my second theory that Arlecchino had ties to the Narzissenkreuz Ordo and she has a "true form" similar to Caterpillar and when she enters that form, she becomes more manic, wild, and violent which is why anyone who sees that side of her would "go poof". These are just theories I have, but it feels good to get them off my chest.

Slowly (1)
Wherein you ask the Genshin men to waltz with you. Characters; Scaramouche/Wanderer(I), Alhaitham(I), Kaeya Alberich(II), Diluc Raginvindr(II), Kamisato Ayato(II), Kaedehara Kazuha(III), Tartaglia/Childe(III), Zhongli(III) (all separately!!!!!!!!!) CW/Tags: 3.0 onwards archon quest spoilers? pure fluuuuuuuuuuff, minor swearing, very short crack fic, probably spoilers for Scara's backstory on his part, very very very very cheesy. i cannot stress how cheesy enough it is. ooc Alhaitham ft. Kaveh since there's only specks of their character in current quests omg. many parts because i feel like procrastinating no i dont, i just keep on getting distracted by singing along to Spotify. this was drafted on December 17, and posted on December 19. AND ITS ONLY TWO CHARACTERS OMFG A.N: HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!1!1!!1 i was listening to Mabagal by Moira Dela Torre and Daniel Padilla and i probably didnt revise whatever i wrote here, so what you get is what you get (i said i wasnt gonna write things based of off what i listen to and failed)
Scaramouche/Wanderer;
You're a performer for the Grand Bazaar, and they're holding a formal event to celebrate the year's end! Being one of the star performers, you're invited to the celebration of course, and you got an extra admission ticket for a plus-one! It's seemingly easy to answer the question of who to bring; your boyfriend, Scaramouche of course! You're excited for the event, which also means dancing! Although, you're not sure if Scara likes to dance, but that doesn't matter, he can learn! "It won't be as hard as you think! This night, at the Grand Bazaar, everyone will be there to celebrate an end of another year! Please, you have to come!" "Again, for the nth time, I'm not going to the event [First]. It's too... unruly for my tastes." You raise a brow, questioning is reason for declining "Don't want to, or just shy?" He isn't naturally ashamed of large crowds, you've seen him handle a performance once, all the attention he received had gotten him ecstatic. But why was he refusing this time? Was it because of you? "I... can't um— dance properly." Ah, okay. "I can teach you. It's not a traditional dance what-so-ever, it's just a waltz." He ponders on it for a moment, and eventually agrees. "Alright, I'll go. As long as you don't trip up and embarrass me." You audibly giggled at that. Time was ticking, and with the sound of a bell, you knew the celebration was starting. The bazaar was full of people, you could basically feel Scaramouche trembling on the dance floor. "Don't feel nervous. I'm right here." The music starts, you begin to lead Scaramouche on how to waltz on the dance floor. He was, quite surprisingly a natural at this, and hardly ever tripped on his feet. Scaramouche feels time trickling much more slowly around him, as he waltzes with you, he is taken back to the moments where he was known as Kunikuzushi, dancing without a care in the world. Before the world was full of betrayal, before the world gave him you.
"Time seems to stop when I'm with you. I've seemed to achieve eternity when I hold you lovingly in my arms."
Alhaitham; "The Akademiya is holding a grand ball for the end-of-the-year celebration, and everyone's required to go. I assume being the Scribe of the Akademiya does not pardon you from missing this event." Haitham was never a good dancer, he was only good at recording things with a paper and a quill. You think so at least. "I'm incredibly busy tonight, you can opt to go in my place instead, or ask another friend." "You're going." "No." "That or you're spending the year-end break with the General Mahamatra." "No." "I'm asking the Akademiya to arrange a vacation for you and Cyno in Inazuma." "Fine." "Okay, but I'm still making you do the vacation with him." "The hell you won't." You had a specially-made gown for this event, and tonight was the opportunity to show off the effort you put into sewing it. As expected, the Akademiya spared no expense in this grand party. From the chandeliers to the marble floors, everything looks regal, as if it had been taken out of a fairytale. As the music plays, it reminds you of the last time you asked Alhaitham to dance, and that particular memory did not end well. "Oh Haitham, would you please dance with me?" As if questioning your child-like demeanor, he stares at you for quite a bit. "It's not that'd I'd refuse that lovely offer, it's just that—" "ALHAITHAM!!" You snap your head backwards, only to be met with a fuming Kaveh holding two pairs of keys. "YOU SON OF A BITCH" Kaveh's hair, as if it was a flame, was stood upright and had branches, leave and flowers in it. Kind of like a nest. "WHY DID I FUCKING FIND MY KEY AND YOUR KEY UNDER THE RUG?! LAST TIME I CHECKED I BROUGHT MY FUCKING KEYS WITH ME YOU KEY-THIEF" "No swearing. [First] shouldn't hear you swear" "OH YEAH 'CAUSE THEY'RE SO INNOCENT YEAH BUT WHY DO YOU HAVE TO LOCK ME OUT OF OUR APARTMENT?!" "You, don't pay rent. If I forget to give you your keys, that's your fault. Anyway, you should go home and change, I'd rather die than be seen with my roommate this... unruly." "I hate you Alhaitham, I truly do." Kaveh storms off in a hurry, Alhaitham could've sworn there were thunderclouds over his head. He could even make out the muttering Kaveh was doing beforehand. "Stupid... my fucking fault when you're the fucking key thief... I should file a case against you..."
As Alhaitham watches Kaveh ridiculously storm off, he notices you aren't with him in the ballroom anymore. He excuses himself and leaves to find you, only to be met with your tiny figure dancing alone in the House of Daena. You truly were mesmerizing, dancing in the moonlight that shone off the white walls. Your movements on the tiled floor, your hums that guided every single move, and you, the star of this empty show. For the first(second?) time in forever, he fell in love with you all over again. "You'd think a dancer like you should've shown off in the ballroom, not here." You look up, only to be met by Alhaitham's towering figure. "Yeah, I guess I'm not a fan of big crowds, and this place is emptier than an abandoned ruin." "...When you asked me to dance earlier, I really can't, I'm not a fan of big crowds experiencing their Scribe trip on his own feet." He chuckles slightly.
"I still owe you a dance, don't I [First]? In that case, let's dance our hearts out, where no one but the walls will witness anything."
i promise to make a post for everyday starting from this day onwards *crosses fingers behind back*

So, here's a crazy theory about the abyss twin, Khaenri'ah and the Alberich Clan...
// 3.2 spoilers
Nahida said in the 3.2 quest that someone is obscuring the fate of the abyss twin, right? I wonder if the one who did that was Irmin, the former king of Khaenri’ah.
At the beginning of the 3.0 archon quest, we see the Irminsul tree under a red sky, which the traveler associates with Khaenri’ah, an underground nation (although probably not entirely undeground?).
AND the description of the Silver Twig, the item we get after the 3.2 archon quest, says this:
Tumblr media
Irmin is another name for Odin, and this is basically Odin’s story, so when I read the item’s description I was like OMGGGG. Odin hanged himself in Yggdrasil to gain knowledge of other worlds and to be able to understand runes. He did this before he exchanged his eye for knowledge too with Mímir, a being that lives beneath Yggdrasil.
Both the Abyss Mages and the Abyss Lectors draw their powers from sacred words, which leads me to believe that Irmin has passed on much of the knowledge he acquired, possibly causing what Nahida called “pollution of forbidden knowledge”.
Since the Irminsul tree is located somewhere underground, this ‘kingdom established along the tree’s roots’ is probably Khaenri’ah. One of the inspirations hyv used for Khaenri’ah could be Niflheim, a land of mist inhabited by the Nibelungs, a race of dwarves or elves, which seems to be another source of inspiration for the people of Khaenri'ah.
So, could Irmin have added information about the abyss twin in the Irminsul tree before he died or whatever happened to him? Could this be the reason they’re so determined to help Khaenri’ah?
Could the Alberich Clan know this?
The title of the abyss sibling is 'princess' or 'prince’, indicating that they aren't at the top of the hierarchy and Nahida’s words sort of confirm this.
So, maybe they work under the Alberich Clan, but without knowing their true plan. Perhaps they're doing the ‘heavy work’, learning more about Celestia and looking for ways to break the curse, while the Alberich Clan waits for the ‘right time’ to act.
I also think that the situation could be the complete opposite: the Alberich Clan knows of the Abyss Order, but they’re doing their own thing and sometimes they might use them to gain intel. I mean, Kaeya seems to do that.
In this case, I think Dainsleif might be on their side or, at least, know of them. He literally knows every character in the game. Wouldn’t he be aware of Khaenri’ah’s regent clan?
Still, I think there’s a connection between the abyss twin and the Alberich Clan because Kaeya says this when the traveler talks to him in Jean’s office during the Stormterror’s quest:
Tumblr media
Did he mean the abyss twin? Does he have memories of the abyss twin from his early childhood or something? Does this mean the abyss twin and the Alberich Clan know each other? Why would Kaeya say that to a person he just met? This dialogue happens before the traveler received his gliding license from Amber.
It’s very odd.

This post covers topics including Kohei Horikoshi’s manga influences, basic character roles in literature, a brief history of shonen manga and the real-world conditions in which the genre as we know it came to be, Japanese social and cultural references such as honne and tatemae, and other miscellaneous anime tropes.
Sequencing My Hero Academia’s “Manga DNA” II: A Breakdown of Izuku Midoriya (formerly titled, “Izuku Midoriya is Katsuki Bakugo's Destiny And It Makes Me Nauseous”)
Tumblr media
This “presentation” post discusses Izuku Midoriya’s character and values from a broadly “conventional” Japanese cultural perspective. It also compares and contrasts Izuku and Katsuki’s status as narrative foil leads in a shonen series to other narrative foil leads in other classic, influential shonen series.
This presentation includes an in-depth discussion on platonic and romantic BakuDeku(Baku?) as well as my candid opinion about Naruto.
Eijiro Kirishima: Positively Reclaiming National Identity and Making Masculinity More Inclusive (with surprise guest Mina Ashido!) | 1.0 | 2.0 | Ao3 (updated to ver. 3.0)
Tumblr media
This “presentation” post discusses Eijiro Kirishima’s character and arc as well as the real-life references his character’s aesthetic and “manly” actions and credo are meant to communicate. This post includes a discussion of Japanese delinquents and bosozoku, a brief and simplified history of the relationship of Japanese hypermasculinity and military/naval power, a brief discussion of kouha and nanshoku, and a brief general analysis of how Kirishima's early-series insecurities reflect those of an “emasculated” and outdated Japan in relation to Mina’s “effeminate” Japan of today. It also compares Kirishima and Mina’s history and character growth to Katsuki and Izuku’s.
Shoto Todoroki and the Middle Way (Formerly titled, “Original Character Do Not Steal: Why Shoto Todoroki's Best Quality Is Being Lame As Hell And the Fact That It Drives Katsuki Bakugo Nuts”)
Tumblr media
This “presentation” post gives a brief overview of Shoto Todoroki’s character and arc, particularly as it relates to Katsuki’s. It discusses eastern notions of balance in all things and how Shoto’s personal quest for balance within himself and his turbulent family reflects upon Katsuki and Izuku’s interpersonal situation.
Todoroki: The Mountain, the Hawk, and the Haunted House | Part 1 | Part 2 | Ao3 (updated to ver. 2.0)
Tumblr media
These “presentation” posts take a detailed look at the Todoroki family members and their stories, and provides a significant chunk of meta about Keigo Takami (Hawks). It covers the basics of Japan’s postwar western envy, the modern Japanese patriarchy, and ie family system as well as how these things relate to the characters and their motivations. These posts also discuss the parallels of several sets of characters including Keigo and Toya, Keigo and Deku, Endeavor/Enji and All Might/Toshinori, and Enji and Deku.
A Practical Solution to Ochako Uraraka and Katsuki Bakugo’s Mutual Problem (with surprise guest Himiko Toga!)
Tumblr media
This “presentation” is formulated like a joke complete with some rough ribbing towards Deku. This discusses the similarities and differences in Uraraka, Bakugo, and Toga’s plots and relationships with Izuku Midoriya.
Trauma Doesn’t Make You Wrong or Right But it Does Make You Easier to Manipulate: Tomura Shigaraki and All for One (with surprise guests Eri, Tenko Shimura’s family, and the League of Villains!) | Ao3
Tumblr media
This “presentation” discusses the similarities and overlap between Heroes, Villains and victims. It also breaks down how All for One is a personification of fascism throughout time and how he targets individuals, as well as what social or individual qualities he considers when choosing his marks. Oh, and this one discusses the nature of trauma and PTSD, how abuse perpetuates a cycle of itself, and how Shigaraki’s destructive rampage is really a cry for help.
From Shuichi Iguchi to Tomura Shigaraki and Bakugo Katsuki to Izuku Midoriya: With Love From Your Shadow | Ao3
Tumblr media
This “presentation” discusses Spinner and his role in the story as well as how he and his relationship with Shigaraki parallels (or doesn’t parallel) Bakugo’s relationship with Deku.

II. New Characters
5-Star Character "Verdant Strider" Tighnari (Dendro)
◇ Vision: Dendro
◇ Weapon: Bow
◇ A young researcher well-versed in botany who currently serves as a Forest Watcher in Avidya Forest. He is a straight shooter with a warm heart — and a dab hand at guiding even the dullest of pupils.
◆ Tighnari has a special Charge Level 2 Aimed Shot and can be charged to fire a Wreath Arrow, dealing Dendro DMG. It also generates 4 homing Clusterbloom Arrows after hitting, dealing further Dendro DMG.
◆ Elemental Skill: Vijnana-Phala Mine
◆ Throws a Vijnana Stormheart ahead that deals AoE Dendro DMG, creating a Vijnana-Khanda Field that creates mysterious illusions that taunt opponents and draw their fire. Additionally, Tighnari gains the Vijnana Suffusion effect, which will decrease the Wreath Arrow's charging time. This effect will dissipate once the skill duration ends or after Tighnari has fired 3 Wreath Arrows.
◆ Elemental Burst: Fashioner's Tanglevine Shaft
◆ Fires 6 Tanglevine Shafts that can track opponents and deal Dendro DMG. After they hit, the Tanglevine Shafts will create a secondary wave of Tanglevine Shafts that can also track opponents and deal Dendro DMG on hit.
◆ The 5-star character "Verdant Strider" Tighnari (Dendro) will be available in the standard wish "Wanderlust Invocation" in the next Version.
4-Star Character "Sprout of Rebirth" Collei (Dendro)
◇ Vision: Dendro
◇ Weapon: Bow
◇ A trainee ranger active in Avidya Forest. Behind her enthusiastic words and actions hides a slightly introverted personality.
◆ Elemental Skill: Floral Brush
◆ Throws out a Floral Ring that deals 1 instance of Dendro DMG to targets it comes into contact with.
◆ Elemental Burst: Trump-Card Kitty
◆ Throws the doll named Cuilein-Anbar, causing an explosion that deals AoE Dendro DMG, creating a Cuilein-Anbar Zone. Cuilein-Anbar will bounce around within this zone, dealing AoE Dendro DMG.
4-Star Character "Treasure of Dream Garden" Dori (Electro)
◇ Vision: Electro
◇ Weapon: Claymore
◇ An elusive merchant who has a fondness for glittering Mora.
◆ Elemental Skill: Spirit-Warding Lamp: Troubleshooter Cannon
◆ Directs a Spirit-Warding Lamp to fire off a Troubleshooter Shot at opponents, dealing Electro DMG. After the Troubleshooter Shot hits, it will create 2 After-Sales Service Rounds that will automatically track opponents and deal Electro DMG.
◆ Elemental Burst: Alcazarzaray's Exactitude
◆ Summons forth the Jinni within the lamp, that connects to a nearby character. The connected character will continuously restore HP based on Dori's Max HP, and will continuously regenerate Energy. When the connector between the Jinni and the character touches opponents, it will deal Electro DMG to them every 0.4s. Only one Lamp Spirit can exist at one time.
5-Star Character Traveler (Dendro)
◇ Interact with a Statue of The Seven - Dendro to resonate with the Dendro element, and use a new Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst.
◆ Elemental Skill: Razorgrass Blade
◆ Deals Dendro DMG ahead.
◆ Elemental Burst: Surgent Manifestation
◆ Calls upon the might of the flora all around you, creating a Lea Lotus Lamp. This Lamp will deal continuous Dendro DMG to opponents within its AoE. The Lea Lotus Lamp will undergo corresponding changes after it comes into contact with Hydro/Electro/Pyro.
III. New Domains
Domain of Forgery: Tower of Abject Pride
◇ It is said that the deserts were once home to three sage-kings, one of whom remained lovely and wise till the very end. They parted ways eventually for the sake of the paradise they sought in their hearts. This place is called a "tower," but in truth was the temporary residence of one of these people when they were building that earthly paradise. If one stretches the past back even further, it was once a small shrine built to avoid the wind and the sand.
◇ Unlock Criteria:
• Reach Adventure Rank 22 or above
• Or complete the Archon Quest Prologue: Act II "For a Tomorrow Without Tears"
◆ Challenge the Domain to obtain Weapon Ascension Materials.
Domain of Mastery: Steeple of Ignorance
◇ In the ancient past, man-made towers that could touch the skies were built all across the land. Though human hearts flowed downward, their souls aspired toward the high heavens. These towers would always fall, or collapse under their own weight and plummet into the depths. However, if one were to look at things at a grander scale, the heavens and earth are as one — no direction is truly different from another.
◇ Unlock Criteria:
• Reach Adventure Rank 22 or above
• Or complete the Archon Quest Chapter I: Act I "Of the Land Amidst Monoliths"
◆ Challenge the Domain to obtain Talent Level-Up Materials.
Domain of Blessing: Spire of Solitary Enlightenment
◇ In ancient times, this was a great and beautiful place, seemingly made to bless the children of humanity. But the arrow of heaven would descend, making mountains out of flat land and burying the ancient capitol beneath the hills.
◇ Unlock Criteria:
• Reach Adventure Rank 22 or above
• Or complete the Archon Quest "Prologue: Act III - Song of the Dragon and Freedom"
◆ Challenge the Domain to obtain artifacts in the "Deepwood Memories" and "Gilded Dreams" sets.
Domain: Under the Umbrella's Shade
◇ The poets have it that spores, like trees, are connected to each other, and that all fungal beings in the world share a single dream. At the end of that dream, the spores would take on the forms of all things, and that all things would return to the beginning — return to being one — and that there would never again be boundaries. But the evolution of Fungi into sentient, locomotive beings was not something that happened in such primordial times. Regardless, this place has become fertile soil for Fungi to thrive.
◇ Unlock Criteria: Reach Adventure Rank 20 or above and fulfill certain criteria.
◆ Challenge the Domain to obtain rewards such as Primogems, Dendro Sigils, and more.
Domain: Fragment of Childhood Dreams
◇ This was once a dreamland paradise of a child of the forest, constructed based on how other children would describe the woods. In their memories, the forest was incredibly vast, much like the world itself. The forest was also immensely deep, just like fate itself. Although the dimensions of the world and the true depth of destiny would ultimately disappoint, the fantasy of them endures deep within this nursery.
◇ Unlock Criteria: Reach Adventure Rank 24 or above and fulfill certain criteria.
◆ Challenge the Domain to obtain rewards such as Primogems, Dendro Sigils, and more.
Domain: The Dark Valley
◇ Legend has it that the moon once had a face. Under the fierce moon's face, like a white bow, the paths through the forest labyrinth would bring lost people to jade and amber dreams. This forest labyrinth has ceased to exist for hundreds of years — and yet even a hundred thousand winters must seem like a day in the garden of dreams.
◇ Unlock Criteria: Reach Adventure Rank 28 or above and fulfill certain criteria.
◆ Challenge the Domain to obtain rewards such as Primogems, Dendro Sigils, and more.
Domain: The Coordinates of Sun and Rain
◇ According to the legends, the goddess who had command over plants would summon forth a spirit of timely rains, whose name was Varuna, or "water and sky." These same legends say that the now-deceased forest king used hedges and streams, and the children of the pomegranate used dreams and illusions to create a labyrinth as deep and intricate as the very roots of trees themselves, to defend the secret of sun and rain.
◇ Unlock Criteria: Reach Adventure Rank 32 or above and fulfill certain criteria.
◆ Challenge the Domain to obtain rewards such as Primogems, Dendro Sigils, and more.
IV. New Equipment
1. New Weapons
Hunter's Path (5-Star Bow)
Gain 12% All Elemental DMG Bonus. Obtain the Tireless Hunt effect after hitting an opponent with a Charged Attack. This effect increases Charged Attack DMG by 160% of Elemental Mastery. This effect will be removed after 12 Charged Attacks or 10s. Only 1 instance of Tireless Hunt can be gained every 12s.
◆ During the event wish "Epitome Invocation," the event-exclusive 5-star weapon Hunter's Path (Bow) will receive a huge drop-rate boost!
End of the Line (4-Star Bow)
Triggers the Flowrider effect after using an Elemental Skill, dealing 80% ATK as AoE DMG upon hitting an opponent with an attack. Flowrider will be removed after 15s or after causing 3 instances of AoE DMG. Only 1 instance of AoE DMG can be caused every 2s in this way. Flowrider can be triggered once every 12s.
◆ You can exchange for End of the Line (Bow) and its refinement materials at the Sumeru Fishing Association.
▌Forgeable Weapons

When picked up, the Leaf will grant the character 60 Elemental Mastery for 12s. Only 1 Leaf can be generated this way every 20s. This effect can still be triggered if the character is not on the field. The Leaf of Consciousness' effect cannot stack.
Forest Regalia (4-Star Claymore)
After triggering Burning, Quicken, Aggravate, Spread, Bloom, Hyperbloom, or Burgeon, a Leaf of Consciousness will be created around the character for a maximum of 10s. When picked up, the Leaf will grant the character 60 Elemental Mastery for 12s. Only 1 Leaf can be generated this way every 20s. This effect can still be triggered if the character is not on the field. The Leaf of Consciousness' effect cannot stack.
Moonpiercer (4-Star Polearm)

When picked up, the Leaf will grant the character 16% ATK for 12s. Only 1 Leaf can be generated this way every 20s. This effect can still be triggered if the character is not on the field.
Fruit of Fulfillment (4-Star Catalyst)
Obtain the "Wax and Wane" effect after an Elemental Reaction is triggered, gaining 24 Elemental Mastery while losing 5% ATK. For every 0.3s, 1 stack of Wax and Wane can be gained. Max 5 stacks. For every 6s that go by without an Elemental Reaction being triggered, 1 stack will be lost. This effect can be triggered even when the character is off-field.
King's Squire (4-Star Bow)
Obtain the Teachings of the Forest effect when unleashing Elemental Skills and Bursts, increasing Elemental Mastery by 60 for 12s. This effect will be removed when switching characters. When the Teachings of the Forest effect ends or is removed, it will deal 100% of ATK as DMG to 1 nearby opponent. The Teachings of the Forest effect can be triggered once every 20s.
◆ Explore Sumeru and complete certain World Quests to get items that can be exchanged for Forging Blueprints with NPCs in Vanarana.
2. New Artifacts
Deepwood Memories (4-Star and 5-Star)
◇ 2-Piece Set: Increases Dendro DMG Bonus.
◇ 4-Piece Set: After Elemental Skills or Bursts hit opponents, the targets' Dendro RES will be decreased by a certain percentage for 8s. This effect can be triggered even if the equipping character is not on the field.
Gilded Dreams (4-Star and 5-Star)
◇ 2-Piece Set: Increases Elemental Mastery.
◇ 4-Piece Set: Within a few seconds of triggering an Elemental Reaction, the character equipping this will obtain buffs based on the Elemental Type of the other party members. ATK is increased by a certain percentage for each party member whose Elemental Type is the same as the equipping character, and Elemental Mastery is increased by a certain value for every party member with a different Elemental Type. Each of the aforementioned buffs will count up to 3 characters. This effect can be triggered once every few seconds. The character who equips this can still trigger its effects when not on the field.
V. Elemental Reactions
1. Catalyze
When creatures are affected by Electro and Dendro, the Quicken reaction will occur, which will render them Quickened.
When a Quickened entity is attacked by Electro or Dendro, they will trigger Aggravate and Spread respectively, which will increase DMG taken.
2. Bloom
When creatures are affected by Hydro and Dendro, the Bloom reaction will occur, generating a Dendro Core.
Only a certain number of Dendro Cores can exist at the same time. If new ones are created once this limit is reached, or if the duration of the existing Dendro Cores ends, the pre-existing Dendro Cores will explode, dealing AoE Dendro DMG.
When Dendro Cores come into contact with Pyro, they will trigger Burgeon, causing even greater AoE Dendro DMG. When Dendro Cores come into contact with Electro, they will trigger Hyperbloom, and transform into homing Sprawling Shots.
VI. New Event

I've been hunting around for the answer to this question, and got pointed to you by a couple of friends, so I hope this doesn't sound too weird, but I've been trying to figure out how Y'shtola shows affection (particularly for the WoL) as truthfully up until ShB, I... uh... thought she didn't like the WoL at all or as a coworker at best? So, I'm trying to figure out what cues I've missed, and playing through again hasn't helped much... again, sry to bother!
Y'shtola's tough to read, so I totally get where you're coming from.
And as I got rather long (No surprise! It's me!), below a cut it all goes.
Tumblr media
I have to note that many in fandom see the adult Scions and twins in earlier parts of the game as not caring about the Warrior of Light due to the initial surface level interactions and hard to read behaviors that were 1) hastily written (I feel ARR texts needed another few editing passes and VA takes they had no time for) and 2) are meant to be open to interpretation.
If one is reading the canon text with an open mind to seeing how characters grow and change (not to mention the shift in writing style as a new lead took over from Stormblood on) it’s harder to say after ShB and EW especially that the Scions don’t care, when community and love (in any and all forms) is a major point of this story of hope and how the day is saved multiple times due these friendships.
Not to mention how often through ARR, HW, and StB the adult Scions are often sidelined or sent off on other missions by the narrative to deny the WoL their aid while also explaining why they can’t help in combat situations against non-primals before we had the Duty Support system. Y’shtola vanishes post-Titan until after Garuda, after the Banquet is gone for much of HW MSQ until late 3.0, is nearly killed by Zenos in early 4.0 so out of action, and then is among the first Scions to fall to the Exarch's Call and is the last of the core group we pick up at 5.0’s midpoint.
Despite how often she and some of the others are gone, or the unevenness of some of the writing over time, I wouldn’t say she or any of the Scions dislike the WoL ever, nor actually do treat WoL as a servant or as a weapon of destruction; in fact, that attitude is specifically given to Alphinaud, and to some degree Alisaie, as part of their coming of age stories in ARR/Coils and HW as they transition from spoiled noble brats to conscientious young adventurers.
Also, clicking on everyone before, after, and in between quest steps comes in handy; it’s a habit to get into early in this game and especially in replays, as a LOT of characterization, background, and lore moments come from those optional dialogues that are easy to miss. There are a lot of great moments with all the doomed Scions in the Waking Sands, for instance, that are easily skipped if you ignore the common room and just rush in and out of the Solar for missions. It adds to play time, but it can be highly worth it to get extra on each character (in ShB it’s necessary with Emet-Selch and all the lore he offers).
But to get at Y’shtola and how she shows affection for everyone—not just WoL but in general—we’re actually going to have to start with our grouchy cave witch: Master Matoya.
Tumblr media
Y’shtola’s amazing magical talent was realized early, and as such she was given directly to Matoya to raise as an apprentice when Y’shtola was only seven years old. In 6.1 quests, when accompanied by Y’shtola around Sharlayan, she specifically notes neither she nor Thancred ever attended the Studium as youths, as they were under the care of masters of their respective fields. Matoya is also credited, according to Alisaie on her first meeting the elderly archon, that Matoya is the one who’s said to have “tamed” Y’shtola.
So let’s look at Matoya. If you visit her cave after 6.0 to find Y’shtola hanging around, Matoya says:
“Like old Louisoix, you lot set out to save the world. Like him, you believed your cause with all your heart. And like him, you succeeded. The spineless wretches of the Forum could stand to take a cue from your example. Now, as Shtola would tell you, I tend to be sparing with my praise. But for what you’ve accomplished, you have my respect and admiration.”
And in all of our interactions with Matoya, that “sparing praise” is true; she’s caustic and grumpy and acts as if she is imposed upon every time we visit. However, if she really didn’t want anyone in her cave, well, we couldn’t get there. She’d change the magic lock. Throw us out. Overwhelm us with brooms and poroggos.
Instead she lets Alphinaud come and go freely to study throughout Heavensward’s patches as he seeks a way to help Estinien, keeping an eye on him, but letting him figure things out on his own as she lets him have run of her library and resources. She aids during the Alexander questline (though is never seen). Time and again, through MSQ and sidequests, Matoya is there for sharp, clearcut, logical advice and magical knowledge and resources. Even in Stormblood’s Namazu Tribe quests, you at one point take your fishy buddy to Matoya for information. Her response to the WoL is one of my favorites:
“Had anyone else shown up on my doorstep with a Namazu in tow, I would’ve had my poroggos deal with them. I’m still not quite sure what you’re about, but if it gets you to stop fighting every other god or dragon for a spell, it can’t be all that bad.”
Coming from Matoya, that is close to a declaration of care for the WoL’s well-being as we’re likely ever going to get.
Especially when you consider the sidequest available from one of her poroggos. It starts as an aether current quest inside the cave, but the chain continues until we discover a hidden broom under a ruined bridge, a broom in which Matoya has locked away all of her most precious memories and feelings for Y’shtola. Matoya tasks the poroggo that when she inevitably dies, his final act of service shall be to lay her body to rest alongside her hidden broom.
This is the woman who raised Y’shtola from the age of seven.
Tumblr media
I said a lot already in my Ultima Thule post about the similarities and differences in Matoya and Y’shtola; where one is a misanthropic hermit, the other goes out into the world to help people and protect the star from dangers, even as she seeks knowledge of life’s mysteries. It’s a rather important difference, though the influence of Matoya’s caustic upbringing is writ in Y’shtola’s every ilm.
The first meeting in the Limsa Lominsa introductions, Y’shtola is labeled as “Cultured Conjurer.” In her early interactions with the WoL, and other NPCs such as the young pirate who gets in trouble, she acts as one would expect an adventuring healer to; friendly concern and relief when one is uninjured, making sure folks know Sevrin and the WoL are OK. She is certainly interested in WoL’s abilities, both combat and aetheric, but even in these early interactions she’s outwardly pleasant. If anything, she’s less brusque and sharp-tongued with strangers and new acquaintances.
Some of her easy irritation is seen in the infamous Feast preparations on the way to Titan; Y’shtola is irate at what the Company is putting the WoL through to test them and all the fetch quests they impose. She praises WoL for their patience and stoicism and humoring the Company, realizing only a bit later the WoL isn’t familiar enough with these heroes to understand why they did all this.
But Y’shtola is not effusive in her praise and compliments; though freer with them than her Master, she is still reserved and understated. Her wit is very dry commentary. She is not afraid to be stern when needed, but that would again be due to the influence of her upbringing; it’s easier to be forthright and caustic than it is to shower affection. But Y’shtola obviously tries to do the latter more often than her teacher.
The most effusive praise I can think of is in Heavensward, as the Excelsior prepares to leave for Azys Lla, when she says the WoL is “the beacon of hope towards which all men drawn” after all the WoL has accomplished so far in Ishgard and Dravania (and even in that verbal spar with Estinien, she tries to warn him of the Eye, and as you escape the Flagship upon Midgardsormr, Y’shtola is the one to ask “Where is Estinien?”).
This usually reserved praise remains true through much of the MSQ; again, she seems to allow her snarkier side and dry wit to come out around the Scions, because among her closest comrades, she is understood to be straightforward but still caring. She challenges people to do and be better (such as her argument with Merlwyb that Yugiri spies on in the ARR patches), and she challenges her Scion family most of all. In ShB there are her snappy comments at Thancred about his ward, but after, in speaking to her she is certain of his heart and willpower; the man she knows is a good one, who needs to confront his feelings and is refusing to while also not talking to his friends about his struggles. Y’shtola was trying to help in her own way—effectiveness and timing aside—and it is reminiscent of how her own Master would have done it; the comparisons to Matoya are strengthened not just by Y’shtola borrowing the name under the Floodlight.
EDIT: Speaking of Rak’tika, some other friends noted: If Y'shtola didn't already care, her first meeting with WoL in Rak'tika wouldn't have been so horrified when she was told it was WoL and not a sin eater she was seeing. She's notably upset, and then works to solve the issue, demanding answers of Urianger (who stonewalls), and then does in fact tell WoL her concerns, once Plot has been dealt with; people forget that scene as it’s not in the Unending Journey.
It does take Y’shtola time to show her vulnerabilities to the WoL, to entrust them with some secrets or take them into confidence. But that all comes rather late, for her to loosen up, to joke more, to be openly vulnerable, after everything the Scions have been through together.
It also does not help that Y’shtola’s more reserved interactions can be read as bids for reciprocation; if one were to meet her at the same level of energy, friendly coworkers it is. If one shows more friendly interest, her own level of interaction would also change—but that works in games with interactive dialogue paths that an on-rails MMO like FFXIV can’t provide as easily as a single player like Mass Effect or Dragon Age, where interactions with party members change their reception of the PC character, even to the point of OCNPC romance.
It all depends on how one reads it and feels about these characters. What clicks and what doesn’t. And for many, Y’shtola is harder to click with than others due to her reservation and sharp wit.
Tumblr media
So if in ARR, HW, and StB she reads as a cordial coworker, that’s a valid reading; she’s as polite and friendly and concerned as one would expect a healer to be. She’s also dry, prone to understatement, and not afraid to be sharp-tongued when called for. She praises, but reservedly, as that’s her upbringing.
She doesn’t have Thancred’s snarky charm, or G’raha’s enthusiasm, nor the interplay of Papalymo and Yda. Each of the Scions are given very broad personality archetypes meant to be interpreted openly. One can even read Thancred as not caring about WoL as more than a coworker at first despite his effusive praise and honeyed words, as so much of it is a front he puts up, and his actual affection for WoL as a friend also arguably shows later (or, if going back to “bids for interaction”, it’s easier to exchange favorable energy with Thancred, but I don’t think that he’s actually much more open and able to reciprocate than Y’shtola, given his emotional stunting under the charm that takes him until ShB to work out, hence my own wolnpc ship with him taking so much time to sort).
I did present this question to my FC for some input, as Y’shtola IS a tough cookie to crack, and unlike some Ancient scientists I could name, I am willing to ask for outside ideas and perspectives to help me examine my own as I draft. One thing noted by certain multi-cultural friends is the cultural context one can read Y’shtola in; in an American context, she does seem very reserved and professional early on; polite, but very much how one would see a friendly coworker. In a British context, one friend considers her rather “chummy” in her pleasant politeness and dry, understated humor when interacting with her throughout MSQ.
For those of us who read the Scions as Found Family, we see Y’shtola as the poised older sister of the group, the supposedly responsible adult in the room who is really just as prone to shenanigans as the rest, in the right circumstance.
And there are many who make the Mom jokes about her; some because they find her desirable and she is actually among the older Scions (despite her claims), but also because she does, as a healer first, have that Mom Friend demeanor, though it is more evident in ShB when she can joke back at the WoL’s silly responses to her concerns.
Anyway. Y’shtola isn’t a social showoff; with magic, sure, but in personal interaction, she holds quite a bit of herself back for awhile, and her ingrained responses due to her upbringing are to be reserved with affection and praise, while quick with wit and straightforward in her speech, not pulling punches. She will be cordial with acquaintances and new people, and shows the concern for others one expects of a healer, but she’s not going to gush the way others might.
This is a lot of words. I like Y’shtola, and get her lowkey approach and humor, so always considered her friendly, but was glad to see her caring clarified in ShB and EW, alongside the other Scions. But if her and other Scion friendships with WoL don’t quite gel for others until arriving on the First, that’s perfectly understandable.
