Happy Restoration Day! Here is my Book of Mormon Testimony

Blessings everyone, I am @not-so-superheroine, and this is my testimony of the Book of Mormon.

I am a convert to the restoration. So the Book of Mormon was new to me. I had heard about it. I had held one before that I saw in the drawer of a Marriot hotel room, I didn’t open it until I took an interest in the Restoration. 

At that time, I was sort of agnostic. I grew up in a mainline protestant denomination but had grown disillusioned. I was introduced to Mormonism through people who were deconstructing from the belief. Naturally, the first things I saw about it were debunking it’s location and historicity. But my mind was being opened to possibilities I hadn’t considered before. When I was younger, it didn’t make sense to me that there would be no more scripture from God. That the author of Revelations could say “that’s it.” for scripture, as I heard some argue. I wondered why God interacted so directly with those in ancient times and why such things wouldn’t occur with us now.  

Eventually, I was curious enough to acquire a Book of Mormon. I was admittedly cautious. I knew what the book said about a “skin of Blackness” and how that had lead to mistreatment of Black and Indigenous persons in different parts of the Latter Day Saint Movement. I was also fairly certain it was a 19th century text. I knew neither of these things discounted the Book as scripture. 

So I went into the scripture without the burden of historicity or author authenticity.  Not to see if the book was “true”, but to seek after the truths within. I approached the text and I looked for the presence of God. I prayed and asked God to guide me in my reading of the scriptures. Millions before me found these precious truths and Divine Inspiration in this book and I thought perhaps, if i went in openly, I could find it myself. 

And did I. And I am glad that I did. 

The Book of Mormon provides further light on issues the Christian community was facing at the time. It seeks to heal and to unify. A theme throughout the scripture and the bringing forth of the Book of Mormon speaks of Continuing Revelation. The heavens were open then and are open now. From what I learned, there is no reason why God wouldn’t provide us further light or would limit who God delivers Divine knowledge too. In fact, I learned that God does just that. It’s just up to us to ask, listen, and discern. 

The Book has also strengthened my relationship with my Creator. When I was a child, I thought deeply about, and questioned, the theology and doctrine I was taught in Sunday School. Sometimes this questioning was not always welcomed. I learned that for some, Ignorance is preferable to doubt. That doesn’t work for me. The Book of Mormon encourages me to be a diligent seeker. My time spent studying the Book of Mormon has been filled with questions. Questions without shame that I encourage to seek after God’s truth. 

Much like Nephi, I Was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God to all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself to the children of men; for he is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

(more from 1 Nephi 3) 29 For he that diligently seeks shall find; 30and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded to him by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in this time as in times of old; 31and as well in times of old as in times to come.

This scripture inspires me and shows me that God wants me to seek after God’s mysteries and the mysteries in the universe God created for us. That thought is absolutely liberating. We should not fear knowledge, God wants us to grow and understand. And my faith is stronger now with this understanding. Questioning and Seeking is needed for spiritual growth.

I find the Book of Mormon to be empowering in reminding me of my moral agency, encouraging me to grow my faith, and work with God to hone my Spiritual gifts to be used in service to the Divine and to my community. The Book of Mormon affirms the Living Christ, Christ’s love for all humankind, no matter where and who they are, and that people of all nations receive light from the Divine and are a part of God’s sacred story. And there is so much more. The Book of Mormon speaks to me about the effects of poverty and addressing wealth inequity. This matches with Christ’s mission to tend to the poor. The Book of Mormon goes into how we should live amongst each other and on building sacred community, on how to be Zion as a people. There are so many lessons packed in there that I believe God wants us to ponder on and to take action with. The Book of Mormon is responsible for changing the way I read and apply sacred scripture to my life. This has changed my life for the better and changed my life outlook. I see myself as an active part of God’s plan carrying out Christ’s mission. 

I thank God for the Restoration

I thank God for continuing revelation and the Book of Mormon

And I thank God for my community, the people of Zion

Are you willing to condemn the racism the Mormon church has taught you?

The church has been wrong on Racism, Patriarchy, Misogyny and Anti-queerness.

One message that is given in scriptures in different ways is that God loves us all and treats us the same, and we should do likewise.

Deuteronomy 10:17 - For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.

Mark 12:31 - The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

John 13:34 - “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

Acts 10:34 - Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism

Romans 2:11 - For God does not show favoritism.

Romans 10:12 - For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,

Galatians 3:28 - There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 3:11 - Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

2 Nephi 26:33 - ...black and white, bond and free, male and female; … all are alike unto God

Furthermore, the Book of Mormon can be seen as a cautionary tale about a group of violently racist misogynists who wound up getting annihilated explicitly because they would not stop being violently racist misogynists. It also teaches that pride and wealth inequality doom civilizations. Too many Mormons view the Nephites as the heroes of the Book of Mormon and want to be like them, but D&C 38:39 warns us, "lest ye become as the Nephites of old."

If FNV was perfect (and kinda excessive) you’d get one companion for each faction I think. In theory it might look something likeeee NCR Companion: Boone already fits the bill for a solid NCR companion imo. He could be a little more interesting though.

Legion Companion: I think Vulpes Inculta was already a cut Legion companion, but it makes sense that a Legion spy would accompany the courier to infiltrate/attack the NCR/Strip.

House Companion: Mr. House already used Victor to keep tabs on the courier, so it makes sense to me that Victor could become a companion. Or just a regular securitron.

Independent Companion: I think a lot of companions already fall under this, but both Benny and Yes Man work too. Both are just as invested in making Vegas independent.

Boomers Companion: I don’t think any of the Boomers would want to leave their base tbh. Also I have no idea besides one of the Mister Gutsys maybe.

Brotherhood of Steel Companion: Veronica is already the perfect BoS companion narratively but I think it’d be funny if you could drag McNamara around.

Followers of the Apocalypse Companion: Arcade is already a good Followers/Independent companion but while it doesn’t make complete sense for her to follow the courier around instead of helping at the Old Mormon Fort... Julie Farkas :3

Great Khans Companion: Melissa Lewis is just kinda hanging around Deathclaws with nothing better to do anyway, like.

Crimson Caravan: I don’t think anyone is begging for a Crimson Caravan companion but it’d be kinda neat if there was a caravan guard up for hire with nothing better to do. Also, Ringo.

Mojave Express Companion: I’m still kinda shocked there’s only one courier companion mod out there. Anyway I think there should either be a courier who wasn’t targeted by Benny and/or Ulysses companion (he was already a cut companion too).

Fiends Companion: Driver Nephi is the meme option but I think there could easily be a Fiend hanging around Vault 3 with nothing better to do but leave.

Goodsprings Companion: I can’t imagine Sunny Smiles leaving Goodsprings to travel all over the Mojave, but I think she could accompany the courier for the first third of the game maybe. Because reasons.

Kings Companion: Rex already exists but I’d love a human Kings companion with a lot to say about every spot in Freeside and the Strip. Maybe a guide/bodyguard.

Powder Gangers Companion: I still think Boxcars would make a cool early-game companion after passing a medicine check, but anyone from the NCRCF could be looking for a good opportunity to leave.

Bright Brotherhood: I think it’d be funny if Harland decided to go with you to deal with the Nightkin and then just kept following you.

So BYU added the musket fire speech to their curriculum for incoming freshmen

An account that I follow on Instagram, @the.fourth.option, posted a call to contact BYU and ask them to remove the speech. It's included in the mandatory course, BYU Foundations for Student Success. I'm having a lot of feelings about this, despite having never attended BYU, so I wanted to post my message here.

Good morning,

I am writing to ask that Jeffrey R. Holland’s speech “The Second Half of the Twentieth Century” be removed from the curriculum for the new University Foundations class for incoming freshmen.

I am a convert to the church, 10 years ago this year, and a nonbinary lesbian. I am having trouble articulating exactly how much Elder Holland’s speech hurt me, and many in the queer community. I firmly believe that it was never Elder Holland’s intent to cause such pain to the queer community. However, as disciples of Christ it is our responsibility to hear people when they say “this thing you did has caused me pain,” and then apologize for doing that thing and make every effort to never do it again.

To the queer community, this speech says "you do not and never will belong." To the queer community, this speech says "you are a danger to be removed using violence." To queer incoming freshmen at BYU, this speech says "you, your spiritual/emotional/mental well-being, and your physical safety, are less important than ensuring that BYU continues to receive donations from people who hate you."

To straight members of the church who harbor hatred for the queer community, regardless of the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself, this speech says "I would like to hear a little more musket fire from this temple of learning." To those homophobic members, this speech says "your homophobia is justifiable and even Christ-like." To those homophobic members, this speech says "violence against your queer neighbor is okay and even encouraged by church leaders." You may include as many caveats about unequivocal love for queer people as you like, but you must understand that when putting "those who live with this same-sex challenge" and "musket fire" in the same thought, many will choose not to hear your caveats.

I appreciate that Elder Holland and other church leaders "have spent more time and shed more tears on this subject than [they] could ever adequately convey." I appreciate that they have "a little scar tissue of [their] own." Many of your incoming BYU freshmen have shed tears on this subject, and have scar tissue. Everyone is hurting here. But time and time again, Jesus Christ left the ninety and nine, the institution, the powerful - to comfort the one. To comfort the outcast. In a spirit of pleading and sorrow, why, then, would BYU choose to drive away the lost sheep, the outcast, the queer student in so much pain, by requiring that everyone read this speech?

Again, I believe that the intent with this speech was never to cause pain to queer members of the church. But, as queer members speak out and explain how such talks and speeches cause pain, seeing BYU and the church as a whole double down on these messages calls into question the the sincerity when we are told that these things are done with love. We do not feel love in these actions. 3 Nephi 14:20 says "Wherefore, by their fruits ye shall know them." The fruits of these actions are only pain, and sorrow, and hurt. Please believe us when we say that this thing you are doing is causing us pain, and please make every effort to never do it again. Thank you,
