Starting is the scariest part, but once you do then it all feels easier. Just start small, Bucky.”

summary: It's 1994 and Bucky Barnes is stuck in a dead-end job at Blockbuster trying to figure his life out. That is until a recently unfrozen Steve Rogers walks through the door and asks him for movie recommendations.

"You lookin' for something for your kid or your niece or… the kid you babysit?" The employee's nametag reads 'Bucky', and in a smaller font underneath is the word 'Manager'. "No." Steve frowns, then follows his glance up towards the sign that reads: CHILDREN'S. He picks up Snow White and shows it to the employee. "Found it." "Alright, dude. Whatever floats your boat. Lemme know if you need anything else. Your Cinderellas and your Sleepin' Beauties. That Jasmine chick from Aladdin is a pretty big hit." Bucky crosses his arms over his chest and that polo stretches a little. "Unless it's the dwarves that getcha goin'." Steve opens his mouth and then shuts it. "Um, what?" "Look, if you're gonna perve over cartoon girls, can you wait until you've rented them out? This is a family establishment."

After righting the wrongs made by Thanos five years ago, Steve Rogers returns home to find the abandoned bakery across the street from his apartment open, with a beautiful but haunted-looking man behind the counter. He desperately wants to get to know him, but the last five years have changed him, and his own self-doubt and fear hold him back.

Bucky Barnes stopped existing five years ago. Now he’s back and struggling to find his place in a world that’s moved on in his absence. When he reopens his bakery, he finds himself drawn to the ex-superhero living in the apartment building across the street.

But both of them are stubborn and argumentative, and their conversations turn to sarcasm and attitude more often than not - not that either of them minds. For Steve, it’s nice to see someone who doesn’t treat him like a hero - disgraced or not - and for Bucky, it’s refreshing to have someone not treat him with kid gloves. Over time, this antagonistic relationship grows into something steady and sure, both of them able to build their lives back up - and build a new one together.

While performing a check up on Bucky’s arm, Tony notices Bucky’s tattoos match the ones that have been mysteriously appearing on Steve’s skin and makes the connection. When Bucky gets a tattoo it appears in the exact same place on Steve’s body. The two are connected. The question is: How and Why?

He felt a strong, large hand taking hold of his left arm and forcing it down. His eyebrows furrowed at the light squeeze. The touch was soft with care, though. Not bad, not like the unwarranted hand from before.

Bucky shot up with a choked up gasp, unable to focus his senses beyond the sound of his breathing that filled his lungs. His dog tags clink noisily, the thin strand hanging from his neck. A fine sheen of sweat dampening his skin, his face beet red from the distress he’d been under. He stared out in space as he tried to get a feel of his surroundings.

The firm bed, the soft sheets, the ticking of the wall clock, the hum of the heating unit, and—

Steve.

Bucky smiles at himself in the mirror, hands perched on his hips. This will defiantly catch Steve's attention.

Moving out in the middle of the woods wasn't exactly Steve's new years regulation for the upcoming year, but neither was becoming a doctor over ten years ago. He could hardly believe that it was almost 2024, yet here was, trying to enjoy the life he carved out for himself. He had more than one thing to complain about, though the biggest was the absence of a certain someone he'd been searching for way too long.

Oh, and the tree limb that collapsed against the bridge and obstructed his way back to the cabin. Now he'd have to find a different route to bring the tree he'd cut inside. His boots protested underneath the thick and heavy snow, the wind whipping in his grey, combed-back hair.

Before long, he found himself kneeling beside the body he spotted in the distance.

The first thing that caught Steve’s eye was the torn sleeve exposing the boy’s reddened skin, the early stages of frostbite settling in, then the soulmark on the center of his bicep. A soulmark, which was identical to the one that was over Steve’s heart.

“Oh god,” Steve said aloud, taking a second to stare at his soulmate, raking his gaze across that innocent face.

That gift, of course, being his gagged, blindfolded, and bound sub with a giant, red bow tied right on top of his ass. A red jewel shines between two thin strings hanging from the single looped bow, a plug to match the thick, green ribbons that are linked into a hogtie.

Steve comes to a full stop beside the credenza, mere feet away from his gift, and gives a low whistle at the breathtaking sight.

“My, I must have been good this year to receive something as...” He steps forward, picking the riding crop off of the couch and gently grazing his sub’s naked back with the narrow edge. A muffled whine slips through the ball gag, causing Steve to smile. “Delicious as this.”

Summary:

Steve Rogers cares about a lot of things, but dating isn’t one of them – much to his fellow Avengers’ bemusement. It’s just never been very high on his list of priorities, falling somewhere behind his work, his friends, his hobbies, and that excellent pepperoni pizza from Vinnie’s on Flatbush Ave.

That is until one night, Natasha drags Steve out to a charity music concert by some hotshot singer that Steve has never actually heard of (which would surprise exactly no one, seeing as Steve is still partial to his records and his radio plays). And as soon as Steve lays eyes on Grammy-award winning musician and international heartthrob James Barnes for the very first time, suddenly he wonders if maybe dating wouldn’t be so bad after all. Dating James Barnes, specifically, that is. The question is just: how does one go about that? Especially one like Steve, who’s never wooed anybody in his century-long life, let alone a man. Let alone a man with long, dark hair, tattoos all over his arms, and a fanbase that rivals Steve’s own.

It’s not like he can just go up to him and say something like, "You and me babe, how about it?"

Excerpt:

Nat, sitting opposite Steve on the quinjet, kicks his shin to get his attention, and Steve looks up just in time to catch the phone she tosses him. Pulling out his earphones, he glances at the screen to find an interview with Bucky for some website called ‘Rolling Stone. His heart rate spikes when the words ‘Captain America’ instantly jump out at him.

R.S.: “We couldn’t help but notice that you and Captain America started following each other on Twitter recently. Have you met?”

James Barnes: “We have. He and the Black Widow came to one of my charity gigs the other day.” [Laughs] “I gotta say, it was a bit of a shock to look up and see two Avengers in the audience. A nice shock, though. I really admire their work, especially their recent diplomatic efforts with the UN. So yeah, for them to come out and show their support of this charity I’m an ambassador for, and see me play my set, it meant a lot.”

R.S.: “Did you get a chance to speak to them at all?”

J.B.: “Yeah, I did. We had a chat after the gig. They were both very lovely. The Captain made an extremely generous donation, too. You know, if I’m honest, he wasn’t at all like I thought he’d be.”

In the half-second it takes Steve to get to the next line, his stomach sinks. Oh, hell. He must’ve made an even worse fool of himself than he thought.

R.S: “In what way?”

J.B.: “I don’t know, I guess I expected him to be more formal, more uptight, maybe. But he was charming and funny, actually. Handsome too, of course, but that part wasn’t a surprise.” [Laughs again]

Oh.

“Guess you’re not the only one with a crush, Rogers,” Natasha smirks.

Alexander ushers him in with a small movement, gestures for him to close the door. Anticipation is tingling at the idea of this, at the idea of knowing something that Nick Fury does not. It was by chance that he noticed that the intricate pattern of stars and crossing lines on Steve Rogers’ side was a burnished copper.

A sign that his soulmate lives now.

In this time.

Soulmarks are fascinating lore and even with the National Soul Mates Agency (NSMA) and endless funding, very little is known about why they occur. The patterns are registered in national databases from the day of birth, it being a legal requirement to do so.

Soulmarks always match. That much is unarguable. Grey for a soulmate not born, copper for one alive. Gold, when united, and an inky black upon death. They’re rare, only occurring in about thirty percent of Alphas and Omegas. Many people don’t believe in them, think that they’re outdated but those people tend to be non-des or Betas. Or those without a mark.

Children are told fairy tales from an early age. About soulmarks and love and a relationship that lasts a lifetime. About the great loves, the Alpha Prince and the Omega Princess, of famous couples throughout history.

He’s done his research. He knows that Steve Rogers’ mark was grey—soulmate not alive—when the Valkyrie went down. His soulmate hadn’t been born yet—a rarity considering couples are usually born within two decades of each other.

1. favorite fic you wrote this year

I answered this here, but I’ll take this opportunity to link a couple more of my favorites 😘

Evanstan RR - Last week, I wrote chapter 17 of the Evanstan Round Robin, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! It was brainstorming, outlining, writing, and editing 7k in three days, and I did it! I haven’t had to meet a creative deadline in a while, and it’s nice to know I can crank something out when I need to 😊 I’m also relatively new to writing smut, which was a good portion of this chapter. Tbh, probably not something I would have written without the RR, but I’m glad I did it (even though it was definitely a push lol)

it’s not like a tree (where the roots have to end) - this was fun to write (ok, maybe fun is the wrong word, but it was fun to stretch my writing muscles and do something with a logos more angst and whump than normal. I also feel like skill-wise, my writing was pretty good in this one, especially for a genre I wasn’t that confident in 🥰

vows - Ok so this one is a poem, not a fic, but it’s Stucky and I wrote it, so it still counts right? I really liked the process of writing this (and formatting it to fit the words/mood tbh). I think I wrote the first draft of it when I was sick in bed and a little high on pain meds. Then I forgot about it, and found it some days later. Cleaned it up, changed some words, and.... am I kidding myself or is it actually kinda ok?

15. something you learned this year

So. Much. I only just jumped into writing fic this past summer after 4-5 years of doing hardly any creative writing that wasn’t related to school. The last time I wrote anytning for a fandom was when I was around 15, and I feel like I’ve learned so much in the past few months about fandom in general, this fandom, and myself as a writer, not to mention the writing tips and skills.

Numerous one shots. Many of which are in my WIP folder, half-written, waiting to be picked up again in the coming year.

Other than that, I’ve been working on a longer (25-30k) shrunkyclunks au that I’d hoped to finish by now, but alas, it’s still not done.

Also, @howdoyousleep3 and I had sort of planned out a rough idea for a fic right before we both got busy with fic deadlines and our personal lives. I hope (?) we can pick it up again and collab in 2021 because the idea is still.... very much in my mind lol
