a weird thing no one tells you about becoming a parent while being a person that gets overinvested in media is that you will, quite abruptly, exit the type of media people write thoughtful fanfiction and meta about, while -- and this is key -- not becoming any less consumed by the desire to consume thoughtful fanfiction and meta about the media you're currently deeply invested in
what i mean by this is that every time mint and I listen to the podcast we've both pairbonded with i am Compelled to either check the tumblr tags to see what people think about the latest expansion of the podcaster-focused framing narrative, or look for Little Hedgehog and Bebe fanart, or search AO3 to see if anyone has really like, dug into the complicated sibling relationship between the proprietors of competitor business The Sleep Railway and The Sleep Train

gradually deleting hundreds of years-old questions from my askbox (sorry to you all...) and thought i should answer a few FAQs:
1. if you want to know if we've covered a movie on Overinvested, all public eps can be found on the podcast website and should be available on all major podcast networks. (we will get round to posting a list of the Patreon-only eps as well, which includes several standard reviews and listener Q&As, plus watch-along audio commentary tracks for Avatar, the Star Wars prequels and the LOTR trilogy.)
2. if you sent me a message to say you discovered Black Sails or the Lymond Chronicles or Yuri on Ice thru my blog... i'm so glad you enjoyed them!! and i can only hope to have a similar effect proselytizing victoria goddard's epic cosy fantasy novel The Hands of the Emperor (and its incredibly satisfying new sequel).
2.5. if you're concerned about depictions of sexual violence in Black Sails S1, you can find a list of trigger warnings/timestamps here.
3. if you want to recommend a fanfic in the Rec Center, use the submission form here.
4. i have no plans to watch the Clone Wars animated show - i'm aware of the general canon (thanks to reading dozens of codywan fanfics lmao) but the few eps i watched didn't really grab me. not sure why so many people asked me about this but there ya go.
p.s. my askbox remains open.

This podcast (Overinvested, which is very good) also argued that OJ was more disciplined about eye contact than other characters, which I think is a strange way to frame an active aversion. It's not that he was stronger or more disciplined or worked harder than other people; like the kids in Signs, it's more that his struggles and quirks became strengths in this very specific situation

Do you have any favorite podcasts?
I have an adversarial mental relationship with Overinvested because they said what I considered to be some really ignorant and thoughtless things about theater during the pandemic, but at the same time I really enjoy almost all of their episodes? I’m not really a film buff but I enjoy Fighting in the War Room, and Blank Check sometimes, though it lives and dies by its guests and they can have terrible taste in guests. You Must Remember This is very interesting but I can’t listen to it at less than 1.5x speed. I Don’t Even Own a Television can be very fun and I feel personally invested in the wellbeing of the hosts, who seem like nicer, more mature versions of guys I went to high school with. Did really used to like Reply All; was extremely bummed when one of the hosts turned out to be unionbusting! I’m not really into horror but an episode of I Am in Eskew now and then can be soothing? Anything with Dana Stevens makes me feel like I am comfortably listening to my mom. I have similarly filial feelings towards the Bugle, though my actual enjoyment depends a lot on the guests. I am always on the hunt for more!

6, 11, 20 for the ask game :^)
I already answered 6!
11. Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what
I'm all over the place with this - right now my top two work-medias are very long commentary videos on youtube (mostly about pop culture or shitty people/societal structures - gotta keep it balanced, y'know?). Also there's some true crime in there but I've been trying to cut back on that/only watch-listen to the more ethical channels that focus on helping solve cold cases/get the consent of the family to present the crime or go over historical cases in a respectful way. I'm also big on podcasts, again some true crime there, but also You're Wrong About, Maintenance Phase, Overinvested, You Are Good, Criminal, and Ologies!
20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy
Teeny tiny details/patterns with watercolour & gouache? Lichens & mosses?? TBH I've been in a bit of a drawing slump lately, honestly, so everything feels hard to draw right now >:(

it's been yonks since i even saw a tag game and i love to overshare, so here ya go
tagged by @gated
Favourite colour: historically, pink, but currently having a bit of a lilac moment
Last song: like a girl does by peach prc (it's gay and it slaps)
Last movie: interview with a vampire (1994) - i'd never seen it before & it was really interesting actually to see how that movie (and i assume the books) influenced subsequent vampire fiction. also (spoiler alert for a nearly thirty-year-old movie) brad pitt goes all john wick on a group of theatre kid vampires who wear sparkly capes, do silly little murder pantomimes and are led by one of the most magician-coded characters i've ever seen and honestly??? i wouldn't blame him if he'd done that even without them having killed his serial killer pseudo daughter first
Currently watching: the bear season 2 - these characters are all so mentally ill and i EAT that shit UP. i'm like that's* fire, chef *their trauma
Other Stuff I Watched This Year: poker face (it slaps), heartstopper season 2 (continues to be cute), the fast and furious movies (all of them) (i became obsessed) (i have literally so many opinions), a bunch of d20 and dropout stuff (highlights include gamechanger, make some noise and neverafter) & of course my regularly scheduled weeb shit (csm, jjk, mha, bluelock & banana fish ((speaking of trauma))
Shows I Dropped This Year: the witcher season 3 (i simply forgot i was watching it)
Currently reading: between books atm! just finished re-reading ari & dante and am planning to read the sequel next, even though i've heard pretty unanimously negative things abt it 😂
Currently listening to: simply so many podcasts - gender spiral, material girls, maintenance phase, the dream, overinvested, dragon friends, bigsofttitty.png, &c. &c. &c.
Currently working on: marking assignments rip
Current obsession: i sort of have it deliberately on hold until i finish marking bc i have no self-control or chill, but baldur's gate 3 will rule my life as soon as i have time to play it
tagging YOU! yes, you! you reading this right now! if you want to do it pls do & also pls tag me so i can see your answers ❤️

Nicholas Kamm/AFP via Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Nicholas Kamm/AFP via Getty Images The logo of news website BuzzFeed in 2014. The company announced it was undergoing a 15% reduction in force and ending its news division. Nicholas Kamm/AFP via Getty Images BuzzFeed is shutting down its Pulitzer Prize-winning news division as part of a 15% reduction in force across the company, BuzzFeed CEO and co-founder Jonah Peretti announced. "While layoffs are occurring across nearly every division, we've determined that the company can no longer continue to fund BuzzFeed News as a standalone organization," Peretti wrote in the memo shared on Thursday via social media. Peretti said he made the decision to "overinvest in BuzzFeed News because I love their work and mission so much." But this decision — in addition to a rough few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tech recession and a decelerating digital advertising market — made it impossible to financially support the news division any further, he said. Moving forward, BuzzFeed will "concentrate our news efforts in HuffPost, a brand that is profitable with a highly engaged, loyal audience that is less dependent on social platforms," Peretti said. HuffPost and BuzzFeed Dot Com will have a number of select roles opened for members of BuzzFeed News, he said. BuzzFeed is just the latest media company to announce major layoffs. In recent weeks, NPR cut around 100 people and announced plans to ax four podcasts. The Washington Post, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, nixed its Sunday magazine and a handful of other newsroom jobs in January. Insider also announced this week it was laying off 10% of staff due to a decline in advertising revenue. BuzzFeed said it reduced its New York real estate footprint last year, but that it will also be reducing its real estate in Los Angeles now, "from four buildings down to one, which saves millions in costs as well as mirrors our current hybrid state of work." BuzzFeed News started in 2012 and grew to have more than 100 journalists across the world. The news division was a four-time Pulitzer Prize finalist. Its 2021 Pulitzer Prize award was for the company's international reporting in uncovering the Chinese government's mass detention of Muslims. [ad_2] #Company #dismantles #newsroom #layoffs #NPR

Spotify Wrapped 2022 With 205M Subscribers, $12.4B in Revenue
Spotify reached 205 million paying subscribers at the end of 2022, according to Music Business Worldwide. The company's performance in the last quarter was above prediction, which pointed towards 202 million premium subscribers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Spotify's paying user base experienced a jump of 10 million from Q3 to Q4 in 2022, as stated by Billboard. Spotify's increased number of paid users, combined with ad-supported users, made up 489 million of monthly active users (MAUs), demonstrating a rise from 456 million in the previous quarter. The net addition of 33 million MAUs showed the highest hike of MAUs in Q4. While MAU growth was seen in nearly all regions, India and Indonesian were identified as the leading markets. Spotify attributed the growth in MAU to successful marketing campaigns and the company performed exceptionally during the holiday season. Spotify demonstrated strong growth among Gen Z listeners as well.
Tumblr media
At the close of 2022, Spotify generated a revenue of 3.166 billion euros, up 18% year over year from 2.689 billion euros. Subscription revenue made up a major portion of its total revenue, up 18% year over year to 2.7 billion euros. Spotify has seen a continued growth in advertising revenue, its second-largest sector of revenue, as well, despite slower momentum in ad revenue among tech giants in face of the current recession. Spotify's ad-supported revenue was 449 million euros, accounting for 14% of the total revenue. Average revenue per user, 4.55 euros, however, went down slightly from Q3. Besides the recent change in currency, Spotify pinpointed a "product and market mix" as the reason for the change.
Spotify reported an operating loss of 231 million euros, up from a 7 million loss. Factors that influenced such a loss included “higher personnel costs primarily due to headcount growth and higher advertising costs (emerging markets, Gen Z)”. Operating expenses grew more than 40% during the last quarter. CEO Daniel Ek also reflected on overinvestment, especially in podcast programming, in 2022. Spotify planned to be more efficient in its spending. The company announced last week that 6% of its workforce, roughly 600 employees, would be cut down. CFO Paul Vogel anticipated an improvement on loss in 2023, although when Spotify could break even remained uncertain.

shout out to matt rogers for this delightful new entry to the xmas song canon
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰 Bookshops & Bonedust (Legends & Lattes #0) (Travis Baldree, author & narrator) - prequel novel of Viv's much younger days - just as fun and cozy as Legends & Lattes
🥰 Hashtag Soulmates (everwitch) - 44K, RWRB AU - deliberately tropetastic sort-of meta fic where Henry's a fanfic writer & Alex is one of his biggest fans and they work together but don't know it. Hard to explain but fun to read. Good stuff on the nature of fanfic; also hilarious bits where it walks right up to the crackfic line but doesn't go over. I really enjoyed reading something the author so clearly had a blast writing.
😊 In the Form of a Question: The Joys and Rewards of a Curious Life (Amy Schneider, author & narrator) - entertaining read
😍 Tommy Cabot Was Here (The Cabots #1) (Cat Sebastian) - reread, novella; just really in a mood to reread in this universe! Hadn't read this since I read Daniel's book, so it was fun to see him guest star as a 12 yr old
😍 Peter Cabot Gets Lost (The Cabots #2) (Cat Sebastian) - reread; I love all the Cabots but this one is my #1 fave by a smidge. The grumpy/sunshine is *chef's kiss*!
😍 Daniel Cabot Puts Down Roots (The Cabots #3) (Cat Sebastian) - reread; Alex & Daniel are actually dating but too oblivious (and busy pining in silence) to realize it. I love these dumbasses.
😍 Luke and Billy Finally Get a Clue (The Cabots #3.5) (Cat Sebastian) - reread, set in the Cabots 'verse but with no Cabots in sight. Just two baseball boys pulling their heads out of their asses and figuring out what they mean to one another.
💖💖 +102K of shorter fic 💖💖

Morgan & I just launched a Patreon page for Overinvested, our podcast about movies and pop-culture!
Patrons will get access to ~exclusive content~ like bonus minisodes, and the ability to choose future episode topics. You can pledge as little as $1 or $3 per month, helping to fund our hosting costs and improve our audio quality.
(My personal favorite pledge tier is the WILDLY unrealistic $100 level, which will force Morgan to watch the Star Wars prequels. I doubt any of our listeners are rich enough for this, but I can live in hope!!)
CHECK OUT OUR PATREON HERE!
P.S. We also launched a merch store, including stuff with our logo and “GO IN THE FUCKING POD, JENNIFER” art, due to inexplicably popular demand. (It’s a reference to our review of the horrendous Jennifer Lawrence/Chris Pratt movie Passengers. Don’t ask.)
