my Shepard in 2011 was obsessed with her own tragedy, unsure about the nature of her body and in a fraught relationship with someone who was mourning the same thing she was. my Shepard in 2024 is healing a post-war galaxy with her three self-assured girlfriends
the pattern isn’t necessarily reflective of my interests in characters generally! back then I was also writing Aislinn as intentionally well-adjusted (or, trying, and without removing her from her child soldier backstory). and nowadays Kass is lawful good and untouchable through and through. It’s not that I write characters who are “more fun” now — it’s that specifically my Shepards would not get along and that’s funny. I never bothered to give the new one a different name tho

Day 5 cayde-6 sketch!
I did take a bit more time on this one and went perfectionist mode but overall I'm happy with it.
Cayde, sleepy after a long day of paperwork.

I’ve made a little bit of progress on my Saga &/Kiran fic, a little bit of progress on creechurfadens, and a lot of progress on a Hatch & Ogawa drabble that is growing into a full story but is utterly structureless at the moment. I may need to rewrite it entirely from the other POV in order to figure out why my brain is convinced there’s a good hook in it somewhere. Right now it’s just a thousand words of vague dialogue, inconsistent plotting and descriptions of cars. With any luck I’ll drop three remedyverse oneshots on you at once.

I have a question for the fanfic writers among you: How do you treat your work in progress when a very similar story is put out there? Do you go on writing - in the spirit that everything is unique in its own way - or do you abandon the piece - in the spirit of preventing 'superfluous' contributions?
Let's add a further wrench into the process by saying the recently published work by another author, so similar to your own, seems so much better written than your own (granted we are always our own worst critics). Where do you go with that?
Maybe this is a question for readers, too. Do you mind reading similar works/story lines?

I'm used to being able to pick up world-building concepts pretty easily, so watching a show where I know some of the background (living armor being a common fantasy trope, some of the monsters being mythological etc.) but not exactly what and how the specific dungeon crawling genre version of those things is being subverted is jarring

speaking as someone who likes anime, the things preventing me from falling-head-over-heels into delicious in dungeon (the show -- I haven't tried the manga) do include that it's sometimes too anime or too d&d: the over-the-top dialogue doesn't always work for me, although the humor often does. I sometimes feel I'm missing a lot of the jokes, and, therefore, that the entire "dungeon adventurer" concept could be dropped in favor of a fantasy world that just happens to have a monster-infested buried castle in it. that's a cool concept that doesn't require me to understand how slimes usually work! but that's like saying that no one should ever intentionally work within any given genre, which is unreasonable. I feel ... fomo!! for not having played (or not having played in a long time) the sort of games that the series is clearly riffing on
