Hey so I've had this in my drafts for well over a month, then that recent smosh mouth came out, rendering this near useless, but I'm still gonna post it cause why not.
Beginner's Guide to Smosh Seasonal Games
(For newer fans, even though no one asked. And yes I'm manifesting summer/winter games 2024, look away.) Mostly sourced from the Smosh Wiki.
1- Smosh Summer Games! (2015)
Tumblr media
1st trailer aired: June 27, 2015 ~ Finale: July 31, 2015 This was the OG that started it all! No theme, unless you count it being entirely held at a beach house. Very classic smosh vibes, inappropriate jokes, and queerbaiting galore, with 12 episodes total across Pit (2nd channel at the time) and Games. (tbh I haven't seen this one). This was held shortly after the 'main squad' was cast (Keith, N*ah, Olivia, and Courtney), and was Shayne's official introduction to the channel! Teams/Cast: Bananarama: Anthony (Captain), Lasercorn (David Moss), Courtney, N*ah, Mari Takahashi, Jovenshire (Joshua Evan Ovenshire). Jiggle Physics: Ian (Captain), W*s J*hns*n, Sohinki (Matt Sohinki), Flitz (Amra Ricketts). Keith, Olivia. Refs/Hosts: Shayne, Joe Beretta Winners: Bananarama Special Awards: MVP - N*ah, LVP - Lasercorn, Biggest Fail - Olivia.
2- Smosh Winter Games! (2016)
Tumblr media
1st trailer aired: Jan 30, 2016 ~ Final Ep: Feb 29, 2016 The first Winter Games! Similar classic vibes to the first, except by this time the 'main squad' was much more settled in and comfortable with each other, and the overall cast. Strangely, Ian and Anthony didn't actually participate in the games, but commentated (not sure why). Combo of actual competition eps and also videos for other shows aka specials (s-s-s-sleepover, put it in my mouth) that were winter games themed. 23 videos total across 2nd Channel (Pit) and Games. Teams/Cast: Snow Fleeks: Anthony (captain), Mari, W*s, Sohinki, Keith, Olivia, refs. Blue Balls: Ian (captain), Lasercorn, Shayne, Courtney, Flitz, N*ah, Jovenshire. Refs/Hosts: M*tt R**b, Joe Beretta, Sunny Peabody. Winners: Blue Balls Special Awards: MVP- Olivia, LVP- Joven, Epic Moment- Lasercorn, Biggest Fail- W*s. (Lasercorn got Epic Moment for dropping an actual fire rap during the *wrap* battle)
3- Smosh Summer Games: Camp (2016)
Tumblr media
1st trailer aired: June 25, 2016 ~ Final Ep: July 30, 2016 The first one to have a theme, extremely iconic, the vibes were starting to peak around this time with the main squad being almost fully settled in by this point. For those of you who do not know, back in the day Smosh had separate casts for main/pit and for games, and the seasonal games were one of the only series where they would consistently appear together, and were originally intended to be a bonding activity. This one was the first to really let those dynamics *shine*, and really have them interact in memorable ways. Also best challenges up until this point cause of the theme. 13 specials and 9 competition episodes across games and 2nd channel, this time accompanied by a few vlogs on Courtney's personal channel. Teams/Cast: Kumbayaaas: Anthony (captain), Jovenshire, N*ah, Olivia, W*s, Courtney, Sohinki Harshmallows: Ian (captain), Mari, Keith, Shayne, Lasercorn, Flitz, refs Refs/Camp Counselors: M*tt R**b, Joe Beretta, Sunny Peabody. Winners: Harshmallows Special Awards: MVP- Olivia, LVP- Sohinki, Epic moment- Ian, Biggest Fail- W*s (Sohinki had to leave early due to sickness and so automatically got LVP)
4- Smosh Winter Games: Again! (2017)
Tumblr media
1st trailer aired: Jan 31, 2017 - Final Ep: Feb 28, 2017 Longest seasonal games by far, lot of iconic moments and fun specials, featured CFM's 2nd ever appearance, and was also Boze's debut as a games member! Not much else to say about this one, it's a blast with a lot of classic moments. Oh, and it was the last seasonal games to feature both Ian and Anthony as team captains :,). 19 specials (Game Bang, Board af, hot tub truth or dare, etc.) and 8 competition episodes across pit and games. Teams/Cast: Spaghetti Yetis: Anthony (captain), Boze, Sohinki, Lasercorn, Olivia, Flitz, Shayne Dablizzards: Ian (captain), Keith, W*s, Mari, N*ah, Courtney, Jovenshire Refs/Hosts: M*tt R**b, Joe Beretta, Sunny Peabody, Sarah Whittle, Tanner Risner. Winners: Spaghetti Yetis Special Awards: MVP - Anthony, LVP - Jovenshire, Epic Moment - Shayne, Biggest Fail - Boze
5- Smosh Summer Games: Wild West! (2017)
Tumblr media
Trailer aired: June 26, 2017 - Final ep: July 31, 2017 WWIIIILLLLDDDD HWEST! Let me tell yall this one is ICONIC, for so many reasons, in so many ways. Filmed on an awesome location (a ranch in Nevada), great teams, the production quality was top-notch, and let's not forget the infamous bar-brawl fight choreography of the trailer. So many iconic moments its astounding. Damien's first seasonal games, and also the first to neither feature Anthony nor have team captains (instead of picking teams dodgeball style like they had done previously, this time the teams were picked via a lottery). 15 specials (maricraft, board af, etc.), and 8 competition episodes across pit and games. Fun fact, this season was filmed a week before the "Anthony is leaving smosh" video was released. Teams/Cast: Randy Bandits: Lasercorn, N*ah, Olivia, Damien, Mari, Ian, Flitz Cowbaes: Jovenshire, Courtney, Shayne, Keith, W*s, Sohinki, Boze Refs/Sheriffs: M*tt R**b, Joe Beretta, Sunny Peabody Winners: Randy Bandits Special Awards: MVP - Flitz, LVP - W*s, Epic Moment - Shayne, Biggest Fail - Jovenshire Shayne told his Epic Moment story on the pod, but incase you missed it: during a hangman competition he managed to guess a 2-word answer, with no letters on the board, on his first try. The answer was Wyatt Earp. Some out of context references: "MUNGE", "My name is Calamity Janet, and I am crazy.", "Sorry"×20, *wide shot of damien holding up his fist for like 3 minutes*, *Mama bird*, *shot in the chest* "Where's Anthony?"
6- Smosh Summer Games: We Blew It! (2018)
Tumblr media
Trailer aired: August 17, 2018 - Final ep: August 24, 2018 Folks, what can I say, they blew it. They had 10 dollars and a dream for this one, and they tried their best, but it is admittedly still the weakest of the Summer Games. Between airing later than any other, taking place within only a week as opposed to a month, having the least amount of competitions (5) and the least amount of specials (1 Smosh and Order), this one really is a last-ditch effort sort of ordeal. But make no mistake, it's no one's fault but Defy Fuckhead Media Inc.; in case you missed the Smosh mouth ep, the story goes that Defy simply didn't want summer games to happen that year, and gave M*tt R**b an eighth of the usual budget. Despite all this, I'm sure if you go back and watch it, the videos are actually really enjoyable with some fun goofs and special moments. The first games to not feature Sohinki or Flitz, and this time there were team captains, chosen according to the personal awards given the prior year. Teams/Cast: Inflatabulls: Jovenshire (Captain, previous winner of Biggest Fail), Mari, Damien, Courtney, Keith, Boze Balloonatics: Shayne (Captain, previous winner of Most Epic Moment), Lasercorn, N*ah, Ian, W*s, Olivia Refs: M*tt R**b, Sarah Whittle Guest Refs/Guest Judges:  Garrett Palm, Joe Bereta, Spencer Agnew, Tanner Risner and Tim Baker Winners: Balloonatics Special Awards: MVP - Mari, LVP - Damien, Epic Moment/Biggest Win - Lasercorn, Biggest Fail - W*s
7- Smosh Summer Games: Apocalypse! (2019)
Tumblr media
Trailer aired: July 15, 2019 - Final ep: August 16, 2019 APPOOOCALYPSSE!! This one ROCKS! Not quite as iconic as Wild West, but it's honestly up there in my opinion. The first and only summer games post-mythical, and a return to normalcy from We Blew It in terms of length, airing schedule, etc., probably because they'd managed to find a sponsor to help with the budget. This one had some greeaat specials, including Spelling Bee-kini Wax, Maricraft, Try Not To Laugh: Gauntlet (so many iconic bits from these tntls, and if I'm not mistaken one of Tommy's earliest appearances), and a lot of Smoshcast. Fun fact, Sohinki was actually invited to participate but was in Italy at the time, so Kimmy was cast as a guest participant instead to even out the teams. The first to have no team selection process or opening ceremony, instead the teams were pre-picked at random and revealed during the trailer. 18 specials and 8 competition episodes across Pit, Games, and Smoshcast. Teams/Cast: ToxiciTea: Jovenshire, Ian, Olivia, Mari, Shayne, W*s Mushroom Clout: N*ah, Lasercorn, Damien, Keith, Courtney, Kimmy Refs: M*tt R**b, Sarah Whittle Guest Refs/Guest Judges:  Joe Bereta Winners: ToxiciTea Special Awards: MVP - Joven, LVP - Shayne, Epic Win/Moment - Courtney, Epic Fail - Ian Fun little end note, Lasercorn, up until this point, had never lost a single season, and had been described for a while as having a 'Winning Streak'. That became a big running gag this season in particular, with Lasercorn describing his team as being 'Blessed by the power of the streak', while ToxiciTea claimed that was the year the streak would be broken. In the end, it was. On Twitter and other socials, the hashtags "#Breakthestreak" and "#Thestreakisreal" were used by the fandom to support either team. Overall super fun season with a lot of fandom involvement.
This took me way too long. Enjoy!

The Style Evolution of JT: From Federal Prison to City Cinderella ✨
3 minute read
As one half of the rap duo the City Girls, rapper JT’s fashion was not a main talking point in her career. Now, as an emerging solo artist, JT arguably has some of the best fashion in the entire music industry. From working with brands such as Poster Girl and Mowalola, it’s clear that JT is the perfect fashion icon for the girls that get it.
At the beginning of her career, (2017 ish) JT wore almost exclusively designer brands, reminiscent of someone who just came into a large sum of money. She was dripped out in Dolce and Gabbana, Chrome Hearts, and Moschino - all brands popular for their very large price tags. But as the old saying goes: Just because you have money, doesn’t mean you can dress. To be clear, JT had money AND was into fashion before starting her rap career (she stated in an interview she was able to buy herself a Classic Chanel bag before the fame). In my opinion, her industry connections after she signed to record label Quality Control helped her focus not so much on wearing expensive clothes. Instead, seasoned stylists and designers helped her craft her own unique aesthetic, while focusing on pieces that accentuate her silhouette and new tax bracket.
Tumblr media
JT pictured with fellow City Girl Yung Miami (left)
JT made her daring new style debut at the 2023 MTV VMA’s, sporting a pink, Mirror Palais ss24 gown and matching Marc Jacobs boots. This look (one of my favorites) was a turning point in her fashion career. It showed that she was more in tune with the fashion world. By wearing a lesser known designer, her affinity for big label brand flashiness was over. Now, I viewed her as a true fashion girlie, by sourcing and styling runway and archival pieces. Her unique style, which incorporates the “coquette” aesthetic, features latex pieces, corsets, platforms shoes, choker necklaces, and dainty bows. It is a style distinct to her, and not many could pull it off without looking crazy.
Tumblr media
JT is on her way to becoming a fashion icon. Her outfits are always daring, meticulous, and true to her, which is the most important thing in fashion. She often collaborates with female designers and doesn’t care if you like what she’s wearing or not. In an iconic line from her song No Barz, she brags about being a “Hood bitch dressed like a weirdo”, to which I must agree. JT is a “weirdo” in the best way possible. Her unique fashion sense and dedication to it is refreshing and inspiring for girls that look like her and myself. JT is currently doing a club run tour in the United States, while steadily building a strong, supportive fan base. I am very excited to see all the iconic looks to come in this new era of her career!

my chemical romance has always been a band about death. bullets' bonnie and clyde, three cheers' resurrection-rampage plot, black parade's dying main character, danger days' "where the good guys die and the bad guys win". the vampires and corpse-like make-up and lyrics constantly looking to the end. 1000+ hits when you google: "death-obsessed" "my chemical romance". gerard way's "if we never play another show again, keep yourself alive" in 2008, when the band had an exhausting few years and an uncertain future (video, article).
it took a few years, but the band eventually played its last show. it wasn't just a break or dissolution. the band died. their final song was released posthumously in 2/14 and it was titled "fake your death" -- not a hint at reunification, but a finale that put to rest who they were as my chemical romance. as gerard way said: "i don't think my chemical romance is supposed to happen again. i think it's supposed to stay beautiful forever; it's a beautiful thing. it's supposed to die young in the car wreck" (kerrang , 7/14).
dying young has haunted my chem as long as death has. every single main character of theirs' was both dead and young: irl demolition lovers on the LOTMS cd, the patient being "too young to die", the fab four being teenagers according to the killjoys: california comics. even gun's "never gonna have a son" and "if im old enough to die for your mistakes / then let's go". even helena, who is directly about the ways' grandmother, is played by a young actor -- with make-up matching the bands'. there were fears surrounding gerard's health ending the band then at one point his life, as stated by brian schechter in LOTMS. after the band ended, mikey and frank had near-death experiences. gerard released hestiant alien's how it's going to be, a song about "waking up from the dream and realizing it's not exactly what you wanted" (video): "you said we'd all be dead by twenty five" and "we're just bored you're still alive". the entertainment industry is marked by the iconization of artists who died young. the 90s - 00s was a time + place defined by DARE and AIDS and young veterans. the band coincided with BIG life changes (sky-rocketing careers, new families).
this is all to say that my chem tightly links youth and death. there is also a great emphasis on death as a performance -- dedicating songs and albums and theatre productions and art and stories and appearances to it. the aesthetic of death.
though the band died young, its people didnt. years went by. my impression as an outsider to that time is that even without reason (least of all from these fuckin guys), hope didnt die. it laid dormant. the group friendship and musical relationship was revived sometime 2017 - 2018 because of a family bbq (podcast, quote). that was two years of possibility before they decided to return in 2019. after some hurdles where hope never diminished, they began their first tour after a decade -- filled with projects and personal hardships and children growing up -- in 2022.
this tour has been marked by their visible and stated joy. not a nostalgia tour, not an album tour, but a chance to "reintroduce ourselves to the world" (podcast, quote). the sources of joy are endless (isnt that just so beautiful??) one of them is discovering the link btwn living and old age.
theyre still about death, theyre still about youth, theyre still about drama. gerard's dressed as princess diane and joan darc, famous women who died young. the when we were young night 2 costumes are bout the horror of aging but not changing. it's a forever mcr theme.

👑 + Scrooge from 2017 DuckTales?
SEND ME 👑 + A CHARACTER NAME OF A CHARACTER YOU THINK I SHOULD WRITE !
I’LL REPLY WITH
WOULD I:YES / MAYBE / NO
HAVE I EVER BEFORE: YES / NO (except for a single post for a previous meme!)
ICON & WRITING SAMPLE (IF YES TO EITHER PREV. QUESTION):
(Well, I... wouldn't be opposed to trying him somewhere, he's a very fun character for sure (and, as a newbie to the duck fandom, the definitive Scrooge voice in my mind!). That said, as I found out when I first started writing Webby, my lack of knowledge of his comics backstory can definitely be a bit of a hindrance when RPing against characters who have all these questions about his past that I can't answer xDD; So I'd be more inclined to write him for just a one-off thread here or there than as a regular muse. I also don't know that I'd be great at replicating his very unique alliterative turns of phrase!
Also don't mind me reusing a post I made for him when someone suggested him for a try meme on my old blog! Updated slightly since I now have context of the rest of the series, but still set in season 1.)
Tumblr media
“Och, kids.”
There was a distinct fondness in the elder duck’s tone as he watched the triplets and Webby scamper up the darkened staircase. Another hard day’s adventuring had left the four of them practically asleep on their feet as they returned to the manor; but, like true daring explorers, they’d pressed on, kept up with him, and the five of them together had brought back another ancient treasure to crown his money bin.
But for once Scrooge’s mind wasn’t on the treasure, not right now; it was on the four youngsters: his family. Adventure was in their blood; Dewey the daredevil, Louie the treasure-seeker, Huey the organised leader… and of course, Webby, the girl who reminded him so much of…
A weary frown crossed the duck’s beak for a moment, and he left that thought unfinished.
He was proud, so proud of them all. He could imagine them upstairs, chattering excitedly about their individual escapades as they got ready for bed… each one of them had done so well today. Oh, for sure, they still each had their own long ways yet to go... but they were as fine a crew of young adventurers as he could ever hope to be related to. And if they were a little tired after such a full day…
Well, they weren’t the only ones.
Tumblr media
Scrooge’s old bones pained him now, as he followed his great-nephews’ footsteps upstairs; a sure sign that he was feeling the strain of the day. In the heat of the moment, he felt spry as a duck half his age; but once the adrenaline wore off, his age started creeping back up on him, always there to remind him that he wasn’t as young as he once had been.
Donald would say he was being foolish; just trying to relive his glory days… the thought rose unbidden as Scrooge paused outside his nephew’s room. From within, he could hear the younger duck’s quacking snores, a familiar and curiously comforting sound, and for a moment - just one moment - Scrooge wondered if maybe Donald wasn’t right about that.
With a murmured “harumph”, he marched straight on past, not allowing that thought the time of night.
He was Scrooge McDuck; tougher than the toughies and smarter than the smarties. He knew his limits, and he also knew he had a long way still to go before he reached them: no-one else got to tell this Scottish swashbuckler that he was too old for the thing he loved.

Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005)
Tumblr media
Before we dig into Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, a bit of history. In 2005, the film was largely finished but Morgan Creek Productions didn't think it would be commercially viable. They brought in Renny Harlin to reshoot some scenes and make it more of a conventional horror film. The results were Exorcist: The Beginning. When that effort was a critical failure and failed to bring home the dollars, someone higher up had an idea. So much of this film had been reshot for The Beginning that it wouldn't take too much to complete this movie and maybe - just maybe - get lucky on a re-roll.
It’s hard to say if Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist is better, or worse than its half-brother. It’s certainly classier, with less cheap horror elements, but all the promise is shows initially evaporates by the time we get to the climax, and the special effects are some of the worst I’ve seen in a theatrically-released film.
Former priest turned archaeologist Father Lankester Merrin (Stellan Skarsgård) is excavating a strange church in the Kenynan desert. It looks as though the ornate place of worship - which predates Christianity in Africa - was buried immediately after completion. When the doors are breached and the people on the site begin acting strangely, Merrin's colleague, Father Francis (Gabriel Mann), believes a demonic force is responsible.
You can tell both prequels came from the same branch. They share several plot points. Some characters – although tweaked – are recognizable. A few actors – notably Skarsgård - play the same role. Each picture is also easily distinguishable when placed side-by-side. If one were good and the other bad that might mean something but they're both as appealing as a bucket of green vomit.
The most noticeable blemish on Paul Schrader's film are the special effects. Usually, I'm pretty lenient on CGI, costumes, compositing, etc. I’ll take a film that's rough around the edges but is inspired over something slick but without brains. Even that attitude has limits. Watching this unfrightening spookfest, you can’t help think “is everyone being possessed by the demonic spirit of a Playstation 1”?
As soon as you see that first CGI hyena, you're doomed. While you may remain interested in seeing what's next, nothing this film has to offer is memorable, not even the ludicrous climax. I want to give the film credit for reigning in the gore and lame jump scares, for avoiding obvious references to William Friedkin’s iconic picture, but what we get instead? It’s no good. Lame dream sequences, questionable actions by multiple people, missing scenes, obvious twists… Dominion wants to treat the idea of evil seriously, but it goes about it the wrong way. I dare you not to laugh when the film’s titular exorcism is performed. This film must feature the most non-threatening devil I’ve seen since Glen or Glenda.
Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist looks and feels cheap. Paul Schrader wasn't given the necessary funds to color-correct the footage. The result is one scene after another that looks like a made-for-TV movie. Not helping is the dreadful score and sockpuppet-level special effects but even if the time and money had been available, this picture wouldn't have been successful. Like the other Exorcist prequel - also released in 2005, this one's got no reason to exist. Exorcist: The Beginning was conceived from greed. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist was released out of desperation. What’s worse? Does it matter? (On DVD, October 27, 2017)

My Beef with Parker Finn's 2022 Film, Smile.
My gripe with Smile (2022) is not because I'm a hater. I mean...I am on most things as I'm sure we all are. I briefly reviewed this movie in my monthly watches and didn't have anything good to say but said it anyway. I had an idea as to why this movie annoyed me but couldn't put it into words then. Weeks later, in a longer format, I can finally properly explain why this movie irks me.
It simply was a missed opportunity.
Tumblr media
After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can't explain, nor prove. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying present.
Let's start on a good note.
I love the visuals for Smile. The eery smirk combined with the tilt of the head that casts shadows on piercing eyes. It was enough to be the movie's entire marketing. What was the plot? No clue. We just knew there were creepy people posted up around cities, baseball games, and abandoned roads staring ominously into cameras. It even drew my attention, who usually miss movie advertisements in this day and age of streaming. That's the only thing I like about the movie. The actual smile.
Smile tried too hard to be something it was not. It took itself too seriously. The visuals are unforgettable, fresh, and reminiscent of the Joker, whose image is iconic on its own. But this same visual is playful. It reminds me of movies like Fantasy Island (2020), Truth or Dare (2018), Countdown (2019), Happy Death Day (2017), etc. They all have visuals and plot that aren't taken too seriously, or if serious, is still a fun, self-aware watch. Blumhouse, not A24. Cronenberg, not Carpenter. I tie it back to the obsession movies have today with being "elevated."
Take Get Out, for instance.
Tumblr media
I consider Get Out elevated horror. However I'm not using Get Out to prove a point about the term. I'm using it in the sense of Jordan Peele starting a new trend in storytelling.
The 2017 film stars Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams as an interracial couple going to see the 'rents. Chris, black, is nervous about how Rose's white parents will receive him -- he allegedly is the first black partner she's been with. She reassures him it'll be fine, so off they go to unpredictable horrors. This movie, like many before, intertwined racism with modern horror plot lines. Similar to movies like You're Next (2011) and The Strangers (2008). Only racial. We see this in 1992's Candyman, so racism interwoven into horror didn't start with Peele, sure, but more so revived.
I say revive because we begin to see series like Lovecraft Country (2020), Them (2021); movies like Karen (2021), The Invitation (2022) get greenlit that feature racism backdropped. Many wanted to profit off of Peele's paved path and a movie such as his having huge box office success made a lot of similar works be trusted to be released. A lot of these works copied Peele's signature directing, down to the sound effects and how their actors were managed. Others were decent enough and I was here for the storyline...even if it was becoming a boxed in trope. Diet slave movies.
Tumblr media
With elevated horror, Hereditary, Midsommar, the Witch, It Follows, etc. were hits after hits. It started to grow the pretentious sectors of horror fans that didn't want to go near a slasher or poltergeist ridden movie unless it linked back to some multilayered psycho analysis of some textbook chapter of sociology/psychology. We've kind of already seen that with The Shining (1980) and how its talked about then and decades after. Everything had to be deep, doubled up on meaning with slow, lingering shots to match. I adore many of these, don't get me wrong. It's just a new era of horror like any wave.
But Smile trying to ride that wave annoyed me.
How many more movies about grief-horny demons can we have? Actually, I don't even think that's my issue. I can watch ten in a row and love them all. But at least know what you're making. It's why Riverdale is a corny, funny mess...and Thirteen Reasons Why, who took itself too seriously, is an unwatchable corny, annoying mess. With visuals like that, do you really think making a movie about a woman facing her grief of a lost loved one is what I want to see? I want to see playfulness. A group of friends thinking the other's just killing themselves off when really the victims are witnessing the entity. A survive the night. Something Evil Dead (2013) meets Drag Me to Hell (2009).
Tumblr media
Smile taking itself too seriously, as if they're tackling the topic of grief in a new fresh way, feels like if House of Wax (2005) tried to be Hereditary (2018); just a silly family dispute. What if Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) tried to be Raw (2016); family members going on a unique diet? Even if Smile didn't want to handle grief differently like Antichrist (2009), Hereditary (2018), Midsommar (2019), The Witch (2015), The Babadook (2014), The Descent (2005), Pet Sematary (1989 & 2019), The Final Girls (2015), The Uninvited (2009), or its better twin The Night House (2020), then why exist? A cash grab then? If so, now we fall under morals. Did you try to depict grief in a different scope terribly or cash in on the growing focus on mental illness? Which is it? 'Cause I got you in a rock and a hard place.
A win we deserved for such a year as 2022 was Smile just being schlocky with some fun jumpscares and a good enough director to drudge it out of the murky forgettable waters of fad-filled, cheap movies like the ones of Countdown, Truth or Dare, or even Fantasy Island. No offense. The Boogeyman (2023) is a perfect example. The title is explanation enough but with a solid director such as Rob Savage, this movie, also about grief, didn't feel repetitive and is actually able to be on someone's favorites list. It was a solid watch and pretty good. I assumed the childish villain’s retelling would set a silly tone for the movie but it held its own and executed a plot we can take seriously. Seeing people deeply analyze Smile like a art critic would a painting (what it means, what it signifies, the undertones, bleh bleh bleh bleh bleh) kills me. It's 3D painting of a pool on a sidewalk.
The Night House is truly what I believe Smile was aiming for and has earned the respect that Smile thought it would get. I'm really so saddened by a disappointing plot surrounded by one of the best horror visuals I have ever seen. Let's all bow our heads and mourn.

Paramore: This Is Why Review
Paramore's come a long way since the days of Misery Business.
While many other pop-punk bands have come and gone since the nineties, Paramore is among the titans that remain standing. As someone whose childhood occurred in the 2000s, some of my favorite songs consisted of pop-punk bops from bands I adored. It's 2023, and the rock icons that shook the younger generation's core are making a comeback, and I am here for it! My Chemical Romance is on tour, Fall Out Boy is dropping a new album in March, and Paramore recently dropped their latest album since 2017.
Their 2017 album, After Laughter, didn't impress sixteen-year-old me all that much, but as time went on, my feelings changed. I consider After Laughter an amazing project that spoke earnestly to a growing teen and continues to do so as I am now. Somber lyrics juxtaposed with the infectious upbeat melodies of multiple tracks cemented songs like Fake Happy, Caught In The Middle, and Idle Worship as not only some of my favorite Paramore tracks but some of my favorite songs. Period.
Unfortunately and unfairly, I held standards for their next project, This Is Why way too high. Don't get me wrong, it's still a high-quality album that I enjoy, but not as much as After Laughter. Though, like with After Laughter, my feelings on the album might change over the years.
This Is Why's first two tracks are the singles released before the project dropped, The News and This Is Why. The first song, sharing the same name as the album, feels like one of their most political songs in quite some time, setting the tone for the majority of the project. "If you have an opinion, Maybe you should shove it." It's as strong a start as you would want from our beloved lead singer Hayley Williams. The following song, The News, starts right by mentioning war. Between The News and This Is Why I find The News a slightly superior song. Both tracks are politically charged and lyrically intriguing, but I find The News edges out the win with a better, more charged foot-tapping chorus.
After the first two songs, it's a bit of a mixed bag. There are no bad songs, but some tracks are not as good as others. The singles are fine, but The News and This Is Why are near the bottom of my list if we ranked the songs from least to most favorite. The next two songs I prefer more than the singles. Running Out of Time comes in at track three, less focused on politics. The track fixates on Hayley's poor time management skills and is full of multiple spectacularly relatable or, dare I say fun, lyrics. ("Intentions only get you so far, what if I'm just a selfish prick?" One of my favorite lines, I must admit.) Afterward, C'est Comme Ca plays, and it's even MORE fun. Hayley takes a spoken song approach with her singing during the verses, an uncommon style for her, with an earworm hook.
The remaining six tracks are odd commodities. Hayley's voice is soothing at some points and just okay at others. The lyrics are either profound and thought-provoking or fail to hit the heart accurately. And instrumentally, it's either the most fascinating reflection of inner turmoil or just….there. There are only three tracks I could recommend after C'est Comme Ca, and that's You First, Crave, and Thick Skull. The album as a whole deserves a listen, but some songs surpass others in terms of quality. There are low points, but high points as well. But the highs don't come close to After Laughter, in my opinion. But I'm so happy to have more Paramore in my life, after so long. I'll at least be revisiting the songs I rock with immensely quite a bit.
This album is almost great but still very good. 3.5/5.

At one point a man who appears to work at Sotheby’s is seen standing in front of the work, telling an onlooker that the artist himself had put the frame on. The video, which Banksy aptly titled Shred the Love, also shows a man in a hoodie installing a shredder into the frame and clips of the painting at various points on the evening of the sale. In a nearly three-minute video posted to the site yesterday, the mischievous street artist shows what’s implied to be a practice run of the shredding in which the painting, or a copy, is completely destroyed, with a caption prefacing the clip that says, “In rehearsals it worked every time.” Just as the buzz around his now-infamous stunt at Sotheby’s on October 5 was beginning to die down, Banksy has taken to YouTube to suggest that he had intended for Girl with Balloon to be shredded completely.
