Episode 97a: 20,000 Patties Under the Sea
Tumblr media
“Ooh, ooh! What if instead of bringing customers to the Krusty Krab, we could bring the Krusty Krab to the customers?”
Synopsis: When SpongeBob and Patrick take the Krusty Krab on the road, they end up crashing it into a deep, dark abyss.
This episode begins at Jellyfish Fields, with SpongeBob and Patrick jellyfishing. SpongeBob notices a jellyfish nearby, and tries to talk to Patrick, but Patrick can’t understand his messages. SpongeBob tries to continue to warn him about the jellyfish while Patrick still doesn’t understand, until they bump into each other and run away. However, the jellyfish simply floats away from them as SpongeBob and Patrick keep running. They trip and fall, and notice something popping out of the ground. They decide to dig it up, and find out it’s a UFO (actually a submarine). SpongeBob and Patrick argue over the wheel, as they start to drive it.
At the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs is having a slow day, wondering how he can increase sales. Squidward comes up with an idea, and Mr. Krabs gets the exact same idea. I know that joke is in every piece of media, like, a million times, but I think Squidward’s reaction just sells it. They wonder how, just when SpongeBob and Patrick crash in with their submarine. Mr. Krabs decides they can use it to take the Krusty Krab on the go, and they go flying off. Plankton looks at the submarine, and notes he had that idea years ago, so he tries to compete by raising the fist of the Chum Bucket, and flying it as well. SpongeBob and Patrick approach the Con Man from “Chocolate with Nuts” and his wife, asking if they’d want to buy a Krabby Patty. After denying a few times, SpongeBob and Patrick decide they’ll pay them, and hand them a huge stack of money with a tray of Krabby Patties.
Plankton, on the other hand, is not doing so well with business. He is approached by a little boy who asks for a raspberry flavored Chumburger. Then blueberry. Then raspberry again. Plankton insults the boy, angering his mother. He then insults the mother, angering her husband. He insults the husband, angering his grandmother. All of them, upset with Plankton, start throwing rocks at him. SpongeBob and Patrick, meanwhile, are floating the submarine, when SpongeBob notices Patrick, who was supposed to be on kitchen duty, was out of the kitchen. All the patties, burned and hard as a rock, would be impossible to sell. Or so they thought. They approach the upset family, who has run out of rocks, and sell them the burnt patties, which they then throw at Plankton.
SpongeBob and Patrick continue on the lookout for more customers, but Patrick sees a sign, which SpongeBob realizes says they’re about to crash into an abyss. They fall down, frightening SpongeBob and Patrick, when they see a huge sea monster in the abyss. They ask if the sea monster is hungry, and since he hasn’t been awake for 79 years, that means he hasn’t eaten in... 79 years. They decide to feed the sea monster a Krabby Patty, which he absolutely adores. The sea monster gives them large wads of cash, and SpongeBob and Patrick decide they’re gonna feed him as much as they can. Plankton, upset, decides he’s going to try to ruin their business by bombarding them with chum.
The chum bombardment hits the ship, as the sea monster demands more sandwiches. He looks inside, and notices a piece of chum between two bread slices, and decides that that looks like a good sandwich. He takes the newly created “chumwich”, and SpongeBob and Patrick decide to make as many as they can. The sea monster, however, still just a little more hungry, demands dessert, but SpongeBob and Patrick don’t have dessert. Plankton, however, falls down and gets covered in mud, causing the sea monster to mistaken him for a chocolate éclair. He eats Plankton, and the scene cuts to the Krusty Krab, who just got their window repaired. SpongeBob and Patrick crash into it again. Krabs asks about the money, but they unfortunately weren’t able to keep it, since they needed to let go of something heavy. And paper. Luckily, they were able to keep 37,000 pounds of colorful deep-sea rocks!
THE GOOD:
Let me just say, when the humor in “20,000 Patties Under the Sea” hits hard, it hits hard. Really, there are many funny moments in this episode, including Squidward’s reaction to Mr. Krabs getting the same idea as him, the scene where Plankton insults the customers, the “lolsquid” moment, and how they had to let go of the money to lose weight, but were able to keep several pounds of rocks. The sea monster is also great, being a pretty hammy and over-the-top character.
THE BAD:
While most of the jokes do hit pretty hard, I do think they could hit more often to make this episode a fair bit better. Lots of the episode is pretty dry, and the pacing does feel a tad bit on the awkward side. Nothing to make this episode bad by any means, but it does definitely lower the score a fair bit. When this episode hits, it hits hard, but it doesn’t hit as often as it should. It’s a good episode, but on the lesser side of good.
FINAL SCORE: 7/10
THE SIDE-NOTES:
Recommended by a friend at school, but I don’t recall their tumblr handle. I do know they also recommended I review “Trenchbillies”, so I suppose that’ll be next.
I’m pretty sure there’s actually a term for a liquid-solid-esque object, but it isn’t “lolsquid”.
Keep sending requests. Please. I hunger your episode ideas.
Three more reviews until “The Googly Artiste!”
