Any thoughts on *why* so many people are subliterate now? Is the educational system really that much worse than it was even 15-20 years ago? Or is the tsunami of information we all live with too much to deal with? Or is there something else going on?
...I do have Thoughts on this, actually! Quite a few of them! And I suspect that the answer to your slate of options might be: D, all of the above. I will address your points out of order (sorry.)
B: As for the information tsunami/superhighway, I don't think it's to blame in itself. As the president of an academic organization said at the biennial conference in 2016, "Nous lisons de plus en plus, mais nous lisons autrement" (we read more and more, but we read differently.) It says something about what he meant and about that particular historical moment that I was live-tweeting. And obviously I'm not saying that reading the internet is bad (I read the internet all the time.) But I do think that it facilitates habits of minimal, shallow, or superficial reading, and I do think that's a problem. I once had a student say--in class!--that the historical essays I assigned were challenging for him because he's more used to reading tweets. I stared at him for several long seconds before saying "Then this is good practice for you." I also had a very sweet student in a first-year college seminar who just had no clue how sentence mechanics worked, so I had to find a gentle way of asking, in office hours, "Do you... read at all? for fun?" "Oh, I read all the time," said this sweet student confidently, and my own reading habits enabled me to counter: "Fanfic or published works?" And yep, that's your problem right there. Obviously I read and write fanfic myself. But reading principally fanfic is a great way not to learn how grammar works.
A: in the US? ...yeah, it kind of is, actually, which is horrifying. Like a lot of the rest of my demographic (educator, xennial, NPR devotee,) I listened to the APM podcast Sold A Story. In going to find you the link, I found bonus episodes which I also highly recommend, in part because they include criticisms of the podcast and notes on policy. But what this podcast describes also tracks with my experiences in two very grim years when I tutored reading at the elementary/middle school level, and also found reading comprehension to be a weak link in ACT/SAT prep.
C: this brings us to "something else going on?" And I don't know what that is. But even my college students who can read at a basic 6th-grade level (sob) seem to have really stunted capabilities for inference. I ask them to make inferences and they look at me with the heartbreaking expressions of confused dogs. Or they'll see something blindingly obvious and say things like "Could this... possibly be...?" and I say brightly: "Yes! that's absolutely what it is! good job!" instead of saying: "What the **** else would it be?" Sometimes an entire class of students will read something without comprehension and subsequently thank me for "explaining" a text when all I have done is paraphrase it. And we're not talking academic articles here; we're talking 2-4 page excerpts of primary sources selected with TLC for a target audience of beginning college students. So far I have not snapped and screamed, "I didn't explain shit!" But I do find myself having to, well, explain that explanation would mean digging deeper into the text. I also find myself puzzled and alarmed by the fact that they don't seem able to identify or describe what they find challenging. If I had a nickel for every time I've heard "Just the entire thing was confusing"...! I've modified entire courses to try to get students more of the reading practice and additional skills they need. I'm not sure how much it's helping.
I really wish I had more answers. What I do have is a lot of despair.

What’s the difference between head of character animation, animation APM, animation lead, senior animator, animation supervisor, animation coordinator, animator, etc. ? I know it depends on the studio, so what were the differences in your experience?
where i work:
head of character animation (HOCA): one person that oversees the entire animation team and is in charge of the overall look of the anim style. presents shots to the director(s)
supervising animator: manages a smaller team of leads and animators. oversees entire sequences and gives creative direction. reports to the hoca
lead animator: works closely with the supervising animators to help manage their team. more of a mentor role, helping their animators with technical questions/workflow/troubleshooting/general anim advice
senior animator: highest level of animator, after junior and intermediate
animation APM (associate production manager): oversees the team of animation coordinators and manages schedules/notes/deliveries/communication between departments/so many other things
animation coordinators: absolute heroes, perfect angels, would be nowhere without them, etc. they keep track of the shots and numbers and all the kinds of stuff that hurts the average animation brain

After reading your essays about Charles and PR, I have a bit of a rant when it comes to Charles’ image rn, and how (I believe) him and RBR are working together. I mean, it could be very likely considering his and RBR’s posts.
Let’s have a bit of a look at the 3 accounts that are posting Charles almost all the time rn. Ferrari, Charles himself and Red Bull. Ferrari’s posts are 1. Not much, considering he is their driver, and 3. Are either way too polished or just a thirst trap. Considering that Ferrari is his team, they aren’t posting Charles much, since the beginning of the year. And they haven’t changed their tactics, their posts are too polished, too stuffy if you could say, with the inly non-stuffy one being a pic of Charles falling while playing Football and Skiing, and even that doesn’t look authentic or like they’re really pleased about it.
Now, let’s see Charles. Since the beginning of 2024, there has been a shift in Charles’ social media, it isn’t all theist traps, or any of that shit. I mean, yeah he had a few posts that showed his adventurous fun side of his personality, but they were very limited compared to his curated posts, the posts that are what we could consider “safe” and “according to Ferrari’s agenda” kind of. But since ten beginning of the year, there is only one post which falling in this category, which is a post made by his sponsor, APM Monaco, for a shoot. The rest are, charles is drunk, relatable in LA, being goofy while skiing. Almost as if Charles is trying to detach himself from the Ferrari image if that PR robot who only has looks.
Now onto the last side of this, Red Bull. RBR have always been known as fun, spontaneous, almost chaotic. I mean, their slogan is and always have been and always will be Red Bull Gives You Wings. They have been the ones who never restricted their drivers, Max, Checo and Daniel can post whatever they want. But lets be real, I don’t think Max and Checo use their Socials much (with the chance of Max having a private account which we all knew from his twitch saga 😂, but its mire because Max is a private person).
Back to Charles, Red Bull is posting Charles in a way that shows that he’s a beast on track, only him can battle Max, but also in a way that shows the fun aide, the sticker war?? And I believe RBR and Charles are working together in that sense, RBR showing the dynamic between both, as well as highlight the fact that the ones with the most battles with Max that are the most entertaining is Charles, while Charles is detaching himself from that stuffy Ferrari thirst trap-y agenda into the more fun loving, spontaneous person.
And I think they’re doing that in order to prepare for something. Like Charles to RBR announcement when bestie??
yeah, something may be going on behind the scenes! i mentioned charles' rebrand from ferrari-focused posts to more individual approach here and the recent change of posting patterns (ft. posting charles) on the RBR socials here
i got a bit caught by surprise on thursday -- a day where ferrari is known to post contract announcements -- in the morning f1 posted joint post with ferrari about charles' monza win, then posted a pic with charles' monza helmet quote "one team one dream" (which was rumoured to be his OG renewal helmet, renewal got obviously postponed). all posts lead me and my friends to believe that an announcement is imminent and i patiently waited for the charles renewal announcement to drop.
nothing happened.
the same day, however, we got a new article that updated that carlos' negotiations for a new contract aren't working out the way they wanted. apparently ferrari only wants to give carlos a one year long contract, carlos wants a multi-year contract. that once again delayed the contract renewal announcement.
remember that fred mentioned he wanted to have the contracts locked by christmas so they're ready by january.
also seems like carlos' deadline for contract is the testing in bahrain. they want to announce before the testing starts.
there were also rumours that because of that, ferrari is eyeing alex albon as a possible second driver.
again, it's all quite messy and not fully confirmed but just the delayed timeline shows how many complications ferrari may be facing right now.
is red bull part of the game? maybe, maybe not. we can't tell, we can only follow their social pattern and see how they move in the future.

TS2 Nightlife Soundtrack DJs
I think my favorite part of the Nightlife soundtrack isn’t just that they featured actual DJs doing techno remixes of Sims 2 music, but the specific genres the DJs worked in were never as popular as they were in the 2000s, so it really is a time capsule for the sound of that era.
Note: The “known for” sections are limited to work the DJs had released earlier than 2005 (aka prior to being involved in Nightlife) just to get a better idea of what EA saw in their work to invite them onto the soundtrack as well as compare their music as contemporary to what they created for the game.
Junkie XL: The Sims Theme
- Known for that remix of Elvis’s A Little Less Conversation that was used in a very early internet meme (among other things) and having a song featured in Need for Speed Underground
Adam Freeland: Arch of the Sims / Busy / Makeover
- Known for having a song featured in the rhythm game Rez and the single We Want Your Soul
General Midi: Shopping Spree / Stop and Sim / First Volley
- Known for his 2006 debut album Midi Style (not prior to Nightlife but I couldn’t find anything else notable about this DJ earlier than this lol)
DJ Hyper: Sim the Builder / Sim Time Sim Place
- Known for having a song featured in Need for Speed Most Wanted
Lemon Jelly: Sims Theme / Makeover / Arch of the Sims / Sim Time Sim Place
- Known for the singles Nice Weather for Ducks, Stay With You, and The Shouty Track
Timo Maas: The Sims Theme
- Known for his remix of Azzido Da Bass’s Dooms Night and having a song featured in FIFA 2003
--- Other Sims music trivia posts: ---------------------------

Translation under the cut:
Do you have a lucky charm?
I've known the lucky underwear of some of my coworkers in F1 (I kid you not, that's how he phrases it, even in French it sounds weird), but I thankfully don't have a lucky charm. It's something I never wanted to have during my career because once you forget it, you don't necessarily feel good. I need to be 100% focused every time I get inside the car. When I was younger, my grandmother, who was very religious, used to put a small cross somewhere in my racing suit. But it's not something I kept doing with time.
What's your favourite accessory?
I think I'll go with bracelets. Those are things I wear absolutely all the time. Right now I have four, APM (that's the name of a brand, I had to google it). The best. My jewelry goes with me everywhere apart from inside the car, sadly. Because when I'm driving, I'm not allowed to wear jewels, so I have to part with them. But otherwise, yes, everywhere.
Your favourite outfit?
I like to vary as much as possible and change, but suit and tie, I love it.
The colours, do you dare?
Not for the suits, but otherwise, in everyday life, yes, with other styles, yes. When I put on streetwear, I really like colours. Red, of course, I don't have a choice. When I arrive at the track, it's often in Ferrari red. But yes, red also.
Who's the driver with the best fashion sense?
Lewis of course, he's the most daring one.

just thinking on the top of my head, besides all the stuff on track in F1, charles:
was an atheist by 15
knows how to play piano and is learning the guitar
speaks at least three languages fluently
was the kid that brought ferrari driver academy back
was part of the F3 race from hell
was stalked by a monkey
proficient at sports
got his watch stolen and chased the robbers with his ferrari 488 pista
while on the chase he respected the speed limit and basic traffic rules of conduct
is the face of APM monaco and armani
dated a girl
left her to focus on ferrari
showed up two months later dating her former best friend
said best friend was proficient at minor scamming
literally named charles marc hervé perceval leclerc
nicknamed “il predestinato”, perhaps the most metal nickname in f1 since “the professor” or “il leone” (red baron for schumi doesn’t count since his main nickname really was dick dastardly)
has fans pilgrimage to his house the second they find out where he lives, to the point he had to ask them to stop
charles might have had heartbreaking, infuriating and joyous days, but he sure as hell never had a boring one.

A "simplified" power catalyst rotation.
I have been beating my head into a wall over this build for about a week now. I've got the exact snowcrows setup, (correct golem and boon config, correct gear, everything either ascended or legendary, attribute infusions everything)
I am currently averaging about 36k dps, but I have had peaks of up to 40k. This is after hours at the training dummy practicing this rotation.
This build has a lot of moving parts. You have to keep up 10 stacks of EE. You get 3 at base, and you get 2 everytime you disable an enemy, and you get 1 everytime you get an aura (read also, the first time you combo in a new attunement, or leaping through a fire field). You have to keep up 5 stacks of Empowering Auras, which you get everytime you gain an aura, (and thankfully getting a new stack refreshes the duration of all your stacks, so this is relatively easy to upkeep). And you have to upkeep persisting flames, which means you have to hit an enemy with your fire fields 10 times every 15 seconds. This is relatively easy to upkeep, given that you have a fire field that lasts for 10 seconds and ticks 10 times, you have your jade sphere and you have the low cooldown fire sword 2. You also have to keep an eye on your energy, which is still frustrating to keep track of, making sure that every time you attune to fire you have enough for a jade sphere, and your fire augment is off cooldown. It's also a core part of your DPS to be dropping your jade spheres in other attunements, that way you can still combo. But the annoying part is, you ALSO have to keep track of whether or not you have a jade sphere deployed, because you can't build up energy with one deployed. That's why a lot of the time you might see me drop a sphere in earth attunement, attune to water, drop my sphere there, cast 1 skill, and attune to air. If you have two spheres deployed at once, it creates a longer window in which you can produce energy.
You have no utility outside of the boons your jade sphere can provide, you have no CC that you don't have to use in order to upkeep your EE stacks, you have to use everything off cooldown as soon as you can use it and then lock yourself out of the rest of that attunement's skills until your rotation comes back around to it.
This build is about spamming as many of your damage dealing abilities as you can off cooldown, it is very high APM, it is very high skill, (given that I still can't pull it off reliably above 80% of the benchmarks), and it is incredibly punishing in that if you mistime your skills or your attunement swaps you could see a drop of up to 10k DPS, (don't get locked into water attunement, trust me).
And the reward for doing that is... a DPS number that other classes can reach for much less effort and minmaxing.
Core guardian has a build that can easily reach 30k DPS by auto-attacking with hammer and occasionally using a virtue. 30k DPS for like 10 APM. Meanwhile, I'm clocking in well over 150 APM and barely getting more than 33k. This core guardian build, additionally has plenty of utility! It's got an immobilize, a lot of CC, a conditional shadowstep that you can use when you need it, and you can weapon swap to axe/shield for even more CC and comparable damage. You have a several second invuln too, in case you get in over your head, but if you don't need it you can swap that out for passive healing for your entire group as well as plenty of boons that will help boost your damage further.
I'm not against low intensity playstyles, but there has to be some sort of reward for doing a higher skill playstyle. I wish Anet wouldn't just look at target golem statistics and balance based solely off of benchmarks. It's created an undesirable state of the game in which everything is balanced to do as equal damage as possible in the hands of the top players whacking a stationary target. In an actual raid environment, classes with easier rotations, with more utility that they don't have to spend for DPS, and classes with ranged damage are going to be able to perform better than complex melee classes, whose DPS is going to TANK the moment they have to step away from the boss or dodge an attack.
And there realistically is no reward for being this good at the class. Yeah, I'm going to get to the point that I can bench 40k reliably on this class, and when I do I can proudly wear my crown of "one of the best elementalist players in the world", but I'm not going to bring this shit to actual raids. God, that's a nightmare. Samarog nabs one of my allies and I gotta say "whoops, I don't have any CC to save you, I had to spend it so that I didn't drop all my EE stacks! Don't want to be doing less damage than the healers, after all!" The reward is that I get to know a flashy playstyle that makes everything else seem like a snooze in comparison.
No, anyone who wants to do high DPS in raids is going to bring condi virtuoso, soulbeast, or willbender. Elementalist, and builds like it, will be punished in PvE as long as Anet continues balancing solely off of golem benchmarks.

I wonder if part of Charles new public "look" is the fact that Ferrari have loosened the reins so to speak. Like he was spotted wearing the clothing line he made recently that Ferrari wouldn't let him release. And now he's being papped. I think it all comes down to the fact that his Ferrari contract hasn't been renewed so he's free to do things and be at things he wants to be at, and be seen at places, like the NBA games because he does like/is a fan of basketball.
Also, people making fun of him for wanting to get papped/calling the paps, is so funny to me, because like dude is in LA/West Hollywood and that's public knowledge. Of course his team is going to make the call to get him papped somewhere. He like never goes to the US unless for races or other business stuff. It's also a great way for more people to get to exposed to just him and not him and Ferrari.
I think this year he's doing a lot to somewhat separate himself from Ferrari and Prince of Monaco thing. Because sure he's always wanted to be associated with Ferrari, but they are giving him just pain right now, and he never asked for Prince of Monaco nickname, he just got it and has to deal/live with it. And I think he likes/doesn't mind being the 'Prince of Monaco' but I think he has other interests that don't go well with that image that makes it frustrating.
Sorry, if this was a lot, I just was doing some thinking and couldn't help but share.
I’ve seen that theory around. That they’re loosening they reins so he’s not tempted to leave, and that he is leaving so they don’t have a leg to stand on telling him what to do.
I feel like he’s trying to separate his brand from ferrari as well. Because for his whole F1 career he’s been Maranello’s Sun, “born in Monaco, raised in Maranello”, the Ferrari legacy come to life, but that isn’t really working out on track at the moment. He may have realised the Ferrari golden boy story is only really marketable if he’s winning and that’s not possible right now, so he needs a brand that’s his own that sells whether he’s winning or not. And I don’t know if that means he’s thinking practically about his chances while he stays at Ferrari or he’s thinking about the brand he wants If/ when he leaves. I’m very intrigued.
I presumed it’s not the Prince of Monaco thing he wants to get away from. Because at least that is all his own, and it fits with his lifestyle and sponsorships (high end watches, yachts, APM, etc.). I feel like what he wants to get away from is the Il Predestinato (yes I know it was his pre Ferrari but it’s Ferrari’s now), and Maranello’s sun, his identity as the “Ferrari driver” rather than “driver for Ferrari”. But I could be wrong.
I just want to know what has prompted the change

Can you tell us more about Asian Pirate musical?
it would be my pleasure, thank you for the question!
Tumblr media
[Image description: Five illustrations of characters from the waist up under a banner that reads Asian Pirate Musical. Top left is Zheng He, a Chinese man wearing a red yuanlingpao with a golden dragon design, and a black futou. He points with a scroll and has a sword at his hip. Top right is Sek Yeong, an older Chinese woman with a bob of grey hair. She wears a light blue Tang suit with a red and gold half-cape, and jade accessories. She holds a pistol and a dagger. Bottom left is Keliling, an agender Southeast Asian person wearing multicoloured clothing, including a plastic poncho and a large rimmed hat with SEA patterns. Middle is Nazar, a Black person with a curled afro. Nazar wears batik orange clothing with an apron whose pockets are lined with tools. Bottom right is Riang, a non-binary Southeast Asian person wearing multicoloured clothing including a high-necked vest with see-through sleeves. They hold a holographic spanner against their shoulder. Every portrait is set against a map from the era and location that they are from. end ID]
The year is 2049: A lone pirate sails the Straits of Melaka under a red sky, alone… until a storm throws seafarers from across time and space onto the same ship. The five form an unlikely crew: 14th century Muslim diplomat and navigator Zheng He, 19th century pirate queen Sek Yeong, 23rd century space revolutionaries Keliling and Riang, and 21st century climate survivor Nazar, desperate to get off a dying Earth. Together, they delve into what it means to be free, to resist and to grieve, and to stand in solidarity in the face of our future.
Asian Pirate Musical (APM) is the baby of me and six other rad creatives. We had a Work in Progress showing just before Covid (literally the week where everything started shutting down in London.... what a wild time to cram hundreds of people in an unventilated theatre built in the damp arches beneath a railway track...) and then we wrote the whole show in lockdown. We're now at the point where we're pitching it to companies and throwing applications for money at various walls but... yeah.... it's not the best time to be trying to get a show on in London, ngl.
If ya wanna hear some samples of some of the songs, you can find them on youtube:
so, yeah, queer asian found family pirates is kind of a theme for me! hopefully one day soon we'll find its home, and you all can join us for the trip! we have socials and a website and stuff so, if you wanna keep updated with it, you can follow us there ^^
Also, the header art was drawn by Charis Loke, who is very cool!

A wide range of agriculturists living here makes this place a heaven for nature lovers. The top natural tourist locations in Malawi by Satguru Travel attract people from all over the world. If you are planning a trip to Africa, add Malawi to your list of places to visit and enjoy the heavenly spectacular views of nature.
Tumblr media
1.Nkhoma Mountain
If you are taking Malawi corporate travel services and planning to hike this mountain, you must be aware of the route to the summit, which is as follows:
You will find mostly flat land during the first part of the track
Once you get past the initial trail, you will come upon a fish pond. You may spot children playing near the place.
When you are done with half the trail, you will find slight difficulty as the slope gets steeper there. You can have a view of the pond and most areas of the land while you are trekking up.
At this point, you will have a spectacular view of the summit. One can relax here as about 75% of the hike is done and you need some rest time before restarting the hike.
You will find a rocky slope near this point which is very difficult to pass. In order to clear this difficult part, you are required to use both hands and legs.
Voila! You have reached the Summit within four hours. The mesmerising view from this spot will surely make you forget the tough part of the hiking journey.
2.Mount Mulanje
Located 65 km east of Blantyre, Mount Mulanje or Mulanje Massif rises sharply from the plains of Chizardzulu and is one of the most preferred places for hiking in Malawi. One can also spend some time in the tea-growing district nearby with the same name, Mulanje. This mountain with an altitude of 3000 m is popularly called “island in the sky” by the locals. You will notice what a suitable name it is when you see the mountain enclosed in a smoke-like haze on a misty day.
Just like Nkhoma Mountain, Massif is popular among adventure lovers for hiking and climbing. The Malawi Mountain Club and Forestry Department maintains several mountain huts scattered around the mountain. Hikers can choose from a large number of trails depending on the length of stay and what summits they want to reach. People who do not want to hike can simply visit the Mulanje Forest Reserve and spend some time exploring the plant and animal species.
3.Lake Malawi National Park
Located at the southern end of Lake Malawi, this place is enlisted in the World Heritage Site and is the world’s first freshwater national park. Lake Malawi National Park includes a land area around the bay and cape together with the Lake and islands offshore. You will see a veritable aquarium of tropical fish offering a colourful kaleidoscopic display.
Lake Malawi National Park holds the record for having thousands of freshwater fish that you will not see anywhere else in the world. One can also hire a boat and feed the fish directly from the hand. You can spot baboons, hyrax, antelope, and large species of birds like cormorants, eagles, and hamerkops away from the lake, in the park.
4.Majete Wildlife Reserve
If you are visiting Malawi, do not forget to put Majete Wildlife Reserve on your list of places to visit. The continuous efforts of professionals in the protection of endangered species make Majate the most popular reserve for wildlife and safaris in Malawi. This place is located in the Lower Shire Valley, South West of Malawi.
In the 1990s, there was heavy eradication of wildlife from this region. A non-profit organization named African Parks Majete (APM) in collaboration with the Malawian government took full responsibility and rehabilitated the reserve. The restoration includes infrastructure development, wildlife stocking, scientific monitoring function, and law enforcement.
5.Dwangwa
The satellite town of Dwangwa is situated on the central shores of Lake Malawi, thirty miles north of Nkhotakota. If you are visiting the lakeshore, make sure you spend some time here apart from fuelling and stocking up. You can find good accommodation facilities in this town and enjoy some lake activities during your stay.
6.Shire River
Visiting the largest river of Malawi must be already on your list of places to visit. Shire river is the only outlet of Lake Malawi that flows directly into Mozambique’s Zambezi river. It begins from Lake Malawi and enters into shallow Lake Malombe after a 19 km (12 miles) journey; after draining Lake Malombe it flows southward towards Liwonde National Park, where you can spot hippopotami in abundance.
7.Kasungu National Park
Located on the border of Zambia and Malawi, Kasunga National Park is full of natural woodland and bush and is spread across 800 sq miles. It was one of the oldest premiere national parks in Malawi. With time, the fame of this place has been overtaken by Majete, Liwonde, and Nyika National Park. Nowadays, most visitors prefer going to Nkhotakoata Wildlife Reserve for safaris that is being managed very well. Check the website for flight booking in Malawi and spend some time in the laps of nature here.
8.Chongoni Rock Art Area
Located at the granite hills northwest of Dedza, in Central Malawi, Chongoni Rock Art Area is full of ancient rock paintings, constituting the densest rock art cluster in central Africa. From the paintings by BaTwa hunter-gatherers to rare farmer rock art, you will find every rare and beautiful painting from the Stone Age here. The symbols in the paintings have firm associations with females and are still culturally relevant to the Chewa community.
Chongoni Rock Art is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that comprises around 127 sites of which some are still active for rituals and ceremonies. The tour packages offered by top corporate travel management companies in Malawi often include a trip to this exotic location. You are less likely to find such an amazing collection of preserved ancient art and Chewa’s cultural history from their early transition as agriculturists to the arrival of colonial Europeans.

“Is it always like this?” asked Nate.
“Mmmf mm-mmf mmf!”
“Now that he’s tied to the train tracks,” Petey said. “Guess what happens next?”
His Uncle Nate knelt down. “Is the train coming?”
“The train is coming!”
“What’s the train look like, kiddo? Does it look like some of the mean things your Daddy’s done to you while you were small?”
Petey’s eyes got wide and he ran from the room, foot landing square on the white cotton ropes that criss-crossed Wade’s solar plexus. Wade oofed, and spat out his gag.
“Natey-poo, I am never hiring you to babysit again.”
