I rewrote the ending montage of 15x20 so that everything is almost the same but also, I think, a lot better -
...
DEAN: Enters Heaven. Finds Bobby outside of the Roadhouse. Has their conversation. Bobby points him towards the Impala, which is waiting for him on the road. Dean stands.
...
SAM: We see Sam standing next to a burning pyre; the wrapped body burning on it can only be Dean. As he stands in shocked silence, the first notes of "Carry On My Wayward Son" start to play. The song continues, a montage, as we watch what happens next.
...
SAM: Grieving Dean. He looks around the bunker. It's empty; no Cas, no Jack, and now no Dean. Sam decides that he refuses to isolate himself anymore. He packs his things and leaves. He gives the bunker one final look before closing the door. The bunker lights goes dark behind him. He'll pass the key on to someone else.
...
DEAN: He walks away from Bobby and the Roadhouse towards the Impala. Runs his hand over the black finish as he walks slowly to the driver's door. He opens it and gets in. He's in Heaven now, and he's supposed to rest; but he didn't want to die, and he's not ready to stop living- changing- growing. He starts the car and drives. He has a lot to think about.
...
SAM: He knocks on a house's front door. He looks nervous; he's holding all of his personal effects in the bag on his shoulder. Everything he wanted to keep of Dean's, Cas's and Jack's is in the trunk of the Impala. When the door opens, Eileen is on the other side. They look at each other, both silent. Their expressions are of unbearable sadness and infathomable hope. After a moment, they embrace. Both are crying.
...
DEAN: He's been driving for a long time. He doesn't know if it's been moments or years. The scenery shifts from mountains, to boundless fields of yellow grass, to dense and lively forest, to a desert, to an ocean cliffside. He's been thinking; thinking about what he wants. What he thinks he deserves.
...
SAM: We see Sam and Eileen host a dinner party with Donna, Jody and the girls. We see Garth visiting with Bess and their kids. Sam and Eileen look happy. There are photos of everyone they've ever loved hanging on the walls throughout their home.
...
DEAN: The Impala rumbles to a stop on a bridge overpassing a mountain stream. Dean gets out of the car and walks to the rail to gaze out over the flowing water. He hopes that Sam is doing well without him, but Sam's happiness isn't Dean's priority anymore. Dean wants his own happiness. He's had time to think, and he's ready to go find something of his own, something he wants for himself. He can't be alive anymore, but that doesn't have to mean his journey is over. Thing is, he doesn't want to travel it alone.
...
SAM: Sam and Eileen have a baby. We watch as they raise it. The baby grows from an infant to a young boy. Sam smiles with fondness and sadness at a framed photo of himself, Dean, and Bobby sitting on the hood of the Impala while he carries his son to his bedroom. When Sam tucks the little boy into bed, we see that the child's personalized headboard reads "DEAN". We can assume that Sam is going to live a long, happy life.
[The last notes of "Carry On" plays as the camera rises, panning up and away from Sam and Dean Jr., before returning to Heaven; to Dean. There is no music anymore, just the ambient sounds of the rushing stream and the forest.]
DEAN: The camera is on Dean in profile. He's still looking out over the water, arms braced against the railing. He looks content, and a little determined, but not fulfilled. It's not over, yet.
Suddenly, though we hear nothing, Dean seems to sense a new presence behind him. He straightens, and a knowing expression crosses his face. The camera pans to follow Dean as he turns around. There, in the middle of the bridge, standing next to the Impala, is Castiel.
Castiel gazes at Dean with a warm, soft smile, and even softer eyes. He's been waiting a long time to see Dean Winchester again, but the wait was worth every single moment. Dean is every bit as beautiful as Castiel remembers.
CAS: "Hello, Dean."
The camera is back on Dean, showing his head and shoulders with face centered in shot. He stares past the camera at Cas for a moment, eyes filling with wonder, before a broad smile breaks across his face. He looks to be overflowing with love. This might be the happiest we have ever seen him.
[Fade to black. Credits.]

I'm a different anon but now I'm curious what you would have preferred they do in Dabb era with Dean's anger
hmm i think the single biggest change they could make is to not have soulless!jack kill mary and instead make dean pointing the gun at jack be the actual breaking point. so the vague shape of the last few seasons would look like this:
everything is the same up until right before jack burns off his soul
jack burns off only some of his soul, enough to be concerning, but not enough to actually make him soulless/lose control (the situation with his soul and what to do about it will be a big pressing concern going forward, just another worry added to the pile)
mary dies while on a hunt in a way that is seemingly nobody's fault but is still obviously a huge emotional blow (for the record i would not kill mary off in an ideal scenario but i know that they had to kill her off for understandable sam smith reasons so that's why i'm leaving it in here)
dean and cas get in a fight that is explicitly a culmination of both of their communication issues and has nothing to do with jack and/or mary
the divorce arc still happens (but this time jack is like a confused kid whose parents are getting divorced and they both have to assure him they still love him and its not his fault etc etc)
the makeup still happens but it includes an actual discussion of their actual issues and in the process cas confesses, summoning the empty. ideally, it would be because dean reciprocates but i'm trying to be plausible here so the general vibe would still be the same (and it would have nothing to do with billie because if i'm rewriting this shit, billie is not gonna be a villain! we can find another way to work around lisa's pregnancy!)
after the confession, chuck tries to manipulate dean into thinking that jack is dangerous and that he's the reason that cas is dead again. that everything is jack's fault. that he's burned off all of his soul. that the only way they can all get off this hamster wheel is for jack to die.
dean points the gun at jack. he doesn't want to kill jack but he doesn't want to do this anymore. he just wants it all to be over and if god says this is the way to do it, who is he to argue (he's dean winchester! but he's so broken down at this point)
jack still gets on his knees because he's nothing if not a winchester willing to sacrifice himself.
dean is horrified when he sees jack on his knees in front of him, waiting to be executed, and turns the gun on chuck instead
this leads to the reveal that chuck is the Big Bad and that he sucks. chuck is the reason mary died. he added one extra unaccounted-for vampire or whatever at the last minute and that's why mary died. amara giveth and chuck taketh. he just wanted to see what would happen.
salmondean and jack decide they have to kill god, obvi. instead of spending a season just kind of vaguely stressing over THE THREAT OF GOD DESTROYING ALL OF CREATION while not really doing much about it, they spend one or two episodes figuring out a plan.
15x20 is them defeating chuck. maybe they release all of chuck's power into the universe or maybe amara absorbs him and then her and billie live happily ever after. i don't care. but jack doesn't become god. the series ends with sam saying something about how now that chuck is gone they really can do whatever they want, and dean and jack share a look that is very much What We Want To Do Is Get Cas Back And We're Going To Start Working On That Right Now.
something like that? i know this isn't perfect but it it's a general idea of a narrative trajectory that i would find a lot more satisfying while still being something that they would've actually been allowed to do

20 questions for fic writers!
tagged by @lovevamp
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
4. One's an okay oneshot, then I did a fix-it after 15x20, then I lost my mind completely and spent three years on a season 12 rewrite and now I'm back again writing another fix-it. My twilight zone is self-inflicted.
2. what’s your total Ao3 word count?
540,492 (insert kevin james shrugging meme here)
3. what fandoms do you write for?
Just Supernatural. I started writing a fic for Baldur's Gate Bloodweave but then Destiel dragged me back to the dark side. Maybe I'll finish that one eventually.
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
they're not gonna be in order bc I'm just gonna go thru my bookmarks real quick but - "And this, your living kiss" by opal_bullets "On labor" by a_good_soldier (i reread this one twice this week) "The Nanny" by Kitmistry and those are the ones i feel like mentioning. :)
5. do you respond to comments?
Admittedly rarely. Mostly because I'll open my email when I'm getting up in the morning and read them and then work all day and forget to respond. I do appreciate all the comments I get tho. And a lot of the really kind ones I send to my groupchat and/or save in a folder on my email labelled "nice comments" also just sometimes I don't feel like I have anything to say. Like idk sometimes thank you just seems too small or something you know. It's strange. Then I'll just get in my head about it and say nothing and the cycle repeats lmao. But I do read them all.
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Dog you know I'm not writing any angst without a happy ending. I can't take that shit lmao. It's happy endings only in this house. Happy and found family and loveliness. :)
7. what is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I literally end everything the same way. Please I have the worst case of projection imaginable with these fics.
8. do you get hate on fics?
If I do I'm unaware. But I'd probably know it if I do, I stalk my own name and fics wherever I can because I'm insane and nosey. But nah the most I've gotten is just people being mad about a certain character's actions, but like that's not even hate it's just frustration with a character which is a given in certain circumstances. Now if someone was like "wow bad characterization" I'd be like girl, but no I think people are pretty respectful in my corners for the most part.
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
Bro let me tell you in "Our Old Heroes" I wrote like a singular sex scene and like maybe one or two other hot and heavy ones and good god did they take me so long to write. Like I'm not a very sex oriented person in general so writing this stuff out? Bro it's embarrassing how much poetry I put into that in retrospect (i jest, it's fine) but like I don't generally orient towards it just because it's very time consuming for me. It has to be very intimate and just right.
10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you've written?
So short answer no, I haven't. Longer answer I love the concept and would be open to it. Particularly if it involves Dean being psychoanalyzed in some way because that's my favorite thing to write so it would probably be criminal minds. I think crossovers have so much fun and wonky potential tho.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
I hope someone printed my fic to bring into prison and make a black market hot commodity. It would be the highest honor. I guess that's not theft, it's just the free market. But so I guess really no, if I have I'm unawares.
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I'm aware of but I have had people comment in other languages or on twitter people will talk about it in a different language, which is pretty crazy. It's so wild we can be so connected to a story in that way despite not speaking the same language or growing up in the same environment.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
no! but as @lovevamp has said we've talked about a few that I'm certain one day we will follow through on. I've also talked with @icaruspendragon about maybe doing one at some point bc we seem to have the exact same mental illness that is the dean winchester brain disorder.
14. what’s your favorite all time ship?
I live breathe and bleed destiel, it's truly unfortunate for me.
15. what’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I just have a lot of ideas in my docs that will probably never become more than the ideas they are. Usually when I start a fic like for real I follow through with it. I would feel bad if I didn't lol.
16. what are your writing strengths?
I've been told my characterization is pretty good, which I appreciate. If it was bad I'd probably kms (jk). But fr idk that's the biggest comment I'll get is in regards to that which I really do like because I spend a lot of time trying to find a balance and make sure I'm expressing everyone the correct way they'd express themselves or not express themselves.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
Sex scenes aside I do struggle with action mostly because I find it boring to write out. You just have to try and find so many different words. Ugh. I love dialogue. That's really where I start getting going. But writing action? I tend to do that last because I wanna get through all the good bits first then circle back and do the boring bits.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?
listen I can barely remember english i'm sorry
19. first fandom you wrote for?
i'm an og baby i started here (destiel) and this is where i'll die (maybe not, we'll see)
20. favorite fic you’ve written?
Well, I don't really have many so it's probably the massive one. "Our Old Heroes" by adelaclancy (that's me). I was really in a bad place when I started it and I kind of just gave myself this crazy project for several reasons. One I was stopping drinking so I needed something else to do with my time. Second I was jobless and goalless and really didn't have a lot going for me and writing was really the only thing I have ever had consistently so I was like okay well I'll start this stupid project and it's gonna be like 26 chapters and 500,000 words long and it's gonna delve into all my issues through projection of these fictional characters and if I actually manage to finish it I can finally say I finished something. So I did. And I actually managed to work on myself a lot in the process. So over all that time I went from living in bad straights as an unemployed drunkard to a full time worker with a few years sobriety under their belt and a better sense of my own boundaries and thriving friendships and I dunno man, in a way that fic really was a bridge for me and I think in that too for a lot of the readers they get to see that now too. Like they can see my little notes at the beginning of chapters and how they change over time alongside the characters in the book and it's kind of an experience in that way I suppose. If not through Dean Winchester and Castiel then maybe through me, if someone out there finds a little bit of hope from that silly little mess of words then I suppose that's something to be proud of then, isn't it? Anywho...

oh thanks for the reply! yeah it was the poll - i KNEW the monologue was long. too long (and shouldn't happen at all because dean shouldn't die but i am letting it slip here). BUT it never ever, for over 2 years, since november 19th 2020, it never occured to me it was 8 minutes long. it's 1/5 of the episode. literally WHAT. this information has been haunting me since i sent that ask days ago.
anyway like i said i would definitely like to read some more thoughts about dabbnatural because there used to be a lot of people posting about him as a writer in a good way and after the finale it was a hatefest, (generally speaking). his episodes ARE enjoyable in general so WHY did he write the finale which is you know. bad. very.
i tend to be tinhatty when talking about the finale but it boils down to the one big question of: "what happened?! what happened that the finale is so bad, so not fitting into the rest of the season?!" and it makes me mad and insane. i guess we'll never know the truth.
definitely gonna check that tag of yours though. i need more brainworms.
every time i've tried to answer this in the past almost-four-months i end up with a multiple pages word draft that is basically just a timeline of US politics and spn production schedules from 2016-2020 with source citations and it looks completely bonkers.
i think the extremely blunt thing is that i see a lot of destiel fans assume there was some rainbow capitalist gravy train the CW could have ridden to the bank if only they weren't wildly homophobic and hadn't stopped destiel. but the thing is that the cash money and ratings desired by the networks are with the GA folks.
probably the best proof against a shutdown rewrite to remove destiel is the existence of walker. the CW was betting on it as a "safe" show but greenlit without a pilot in 2019 to air in 2020. and a metric fuck ton happened in 2020 that made it a less marketable show than initially expected when it aired in 2021. if they were looking to pick up viewers from the spn finale and wanted the "destiel demo" then walker would not be their follow-on choice.
but in terms of the actual writing of the finale itself? well. i'm gonna tinhat that the 40yr driving gap was intentional. you can do a lot with a 40 yr amorphous gap in time and space traveling along the axis mundi and seeing the heavenly way in your chevrolet. there is actually quite a bit of flexibility in the story for offshoots or continuations when you have a gap like that. also like. another ep dabb wrote for s15 was 15x10 "the heroes' journey" which is pretty much a big ol blueprint for a "dean retires" ending.
but circling back, i think 15x20 is really in service of a very final ending with which they can shuffle the parts of the audience demo that they want over to walker when it starts airing.
as to just thoughts on dabbnatural... at this point it's become this sprawling madness where i'm a genuine fan who has sought out his non-spn work (RIP resi, you were taken from us too soon). i think he really wrote one of the thesis quotes of the show... "it's just people trying to do their best in a world where it's all to easy to do their worst."
i have no idea if this answered anything

In a Million Memories
By Anastasie Denholm
Pairing: Dean Winchester x Everlie (OFC)
Chapter summary: A routine hunt goes wrong, and someone has to make a difficult decision.
Warnings: angst, so much angst, injuries, this is a rewrite of the cursed scene, so 15x20, which is its own warning
Length: 1341 words
Notes: This does deal with the last episode, so please, be mindful of that, if that's going to be upsetting.
Song: Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush
Tumblr media
Chapter One: Running Up That Hill
Three weeks ago. May 18th, 2020.
It wasn’t supposed to end like this. It was supposed to be their last hunt, but not like this. They were getting out. They were finally going to be safe and happy and live their lives. They weren’t even supposed to be hunting. They had decided to stop. But then they’d heard about the people getting killed, and there hadn’t been time to call any other hunters in.
And more than anything, she wouldn’t lose Dean. She couldn’t. Not again. Though her ears were ringing, she could hear him telling Sam everything he thought Sam needed to hear, and none of the things he needed to say. She mixed the ingredients, her tears blurring everything. She knew she had to stop herself from crying, because either she could keep crying or she could do something to fix this. She couldn’t understand why Sam was content to stand there and do nothing.
“Everlie,” it was Dean’s hoarse whisper that made her realize that he’d finished his goodbyes to his brother. Sam stepped aside, giving them the semblance of some space. “Please come here. You’re the last thing I want to see.”
“Dean, no. There won’t be any last seeings, I’m going to fix this,” she said, bringing the ingredients in her fist towards his wound.
“Ever, I know what you’re trying to do,” he said, a drop of blood on his mouth. So he had been watching her after all. “But you can’t, it could take too much of you, it could kill you.”
“It won’t, Dean, trust me. I can heal you.”
“My love, I-,” she cut him off as she felt her heart drop. He reserved that endearment, using it rarely, and when he did, it was something really good, or something really bad. The windy day they’d gotten married on the beach. As he’d gurgled his goodbyes through his own blood, after that fight with Metatron. When he’d rushed over to her that warm afternoon, as she’d lay bleeding to death in Bobby’s junkyard. Right after he’d knocked on the door of that middle of nowhere motel room, when he’d gotten out of purgatory. This, what was happening here, what he thought would be their last goodbye.
“Dean, please, let me do this. Let me save you. Save us,” she finally saw his eyes soften, and he gave an almost imperceptible nod. He let her see how much he wanted to live, how much he wanted to have a life with her.
She pressed the ingredients to his back, and repeated the incantation. His body remained tense. She repeated it again. And again. The tears returned.
“Why isn’t it working?” she sobbed. She repeated the spell again.
“It’s okay, this isn’t your fault,” he whispered, cupping her cheek with great effort. “I love you.” And then he slumped against her.
“No!” she screamed, “No, you’re not going to die!”
“Sam, help me lie him down,” she cried. “I’m going to fix this.”
“Maybe it’s ti-“
“It is not time, Sam,” she cut him off, no more harshly than he deserved. “Help me lie him down.”
He did. She balled up her jacket and gently lowered Dean’s head on it. Sam had helped her thus far, but she could see he didn’t think she could do anything. He expected her to yell and scream and then give up. She didn’t care what he expected. Or wanted. She knelt beside Dean – or what was left of him. She tried another spell. And then another. Blood seeped into the straw beneath them. Just out of earshot, she could more feel than hear Dean standing there, telling her to stop. Telling her it wasn’t her fault. She knew it wasn’t. She was going to bring him back anyway.
“Sam,” she said finally, having run out of all the spells she could think of. Well, almost all. “Get my bag from the trunk.”
“Everlie, what are you thinking?” he tried to ask her, trying – and failing – to be there for her in that moment. She found it bizarre how okay he seemed with it all.
“Get my damned bag, Sam!” she screamed. He scurried out to the Impala and returned a moment later. He handed her the bag, still unsure what she was going to do. He didn’t know what was inside the bag. “Everlie, can we just think about this for a second? Please don’t do anything rash.”
“My husband’s body is getting colder by the minute and you want me to be rational?” she said, as she began pulling ingredients from her bag, along with a small stone bowl, more a hollowed out rock than anything else. A knife. It had taken her the few moments Sam was gone to stop sobbing and come to a decision. Now, she was calm. Eerily so.
“He’s my brother, I do-,” he cut himself short when he saw what she’d pulled out of the bag. “No. Absolutely not. You remember what happened the last time we messed with that book. You bring him back using that, he’ll never forgive you.”
“He forgave you,” she said without stopping, mixing ingredients in the bowl and pressing the glass knife into her palm.
“Everlie, stop!” Sam said again, and she ignored him. He stepped toward her, to stop her, shake her out of what she was doing, to maybe snatch the book from her. She snapped her wrist, a bit of the energy from her soul coursing through and suddenly he was across the barn, paralyzed where he was. Her soul would recharge eventually. Or, it would’ve anyway. It didn’t matter now.
For the first time since she’d felt him leave this plane, she looked up at the phantom of her husband, standing there, trying to reason with her, trying to tell her to not trade her life for his, to not get herself killed trying to bring him back. The look on her face stopped him for a minute. Because he knew her. Better than anyone else did, better than he knew anyone or anything else. And in that moment, he knew the price she was going to pay would be much worse than just her life. He started protesting again, panic tinging his every word, but if she was going to bring him back, a glance was all she had to spare for the ghost of him. She went back to work, blood from her hand gathering in the bowl. Quickly, she lit a match and threw it in the bowl. It extinguished itself after the briefest of moments, and when she opened her mouth, the words tumbling out belonged to a language so ancient, the earth beneath them shook.
It made him think of that song she liked to sing. If only I could, I’d make a deal with God, I’d get him to swap our places. Her singing was the sweetest sound he’d ever heard, but he hated it when she sang that song. Because he knew how true it was. Every time she’d put herself in danger to save him despite his best efforts, he’d been scared that the next time would be the last. That the next time she saved him, it would be by swapping places with him, and usually, the place he was in was something life-threatening. Or actually death. The next time would be the one where the price would be her life. And here they were. The next time. The last time.
Dean, incorporeal as he was at the moment, lunged towards her to engulf her in a hug, instinctually, to calm her enough to try to tell her to stop, to try to get her to listen. But a white light spread out from her chest. His hand landed on her shoulder against all odds. With his cold, lifeless body beneath her hands, she looked up and mouthed three words. The last thing he saw was her shielding his head and chest with her body. The barn burned white after that.

I understand if you’re skeptical of watching The Winchesters, I really do. And I’m not trying to talk you into it if you don’t want to, because I truly get the hesitation. But for those of you who are undecided, here are the reasons I’m excited for tonight-
-New Dean content
-It might be airing on the CW but the CW has been purchased by a new company and the head of that company has restructured quite a bit, and to my understanding, the executive producers (Jensen and Daneel) are answering straight to him. No middlemen to meddle in things.
-It has been stated by Jensen and Robbie Thompson that they had no desire to “rewrite” any of the canon set up by Supernatural.
-Drake Rodger, who is playing John, clearly understands who John became and has even used the word abusive to describe him. So he gets it. In this time frame John might be different but I don’t believe anyone is trying make us forget what we know he went on to do.
-Jensen loves Dean and I feel like he desires to “fix” what they did to Dean in 15x20. (Not undo what happened, but perhaps shed new light on it, or explain what we saw in a different way. ) don’t know if it will be in this series, but I know that if this one isn’t met with a good reception, another series will never happen. (And my gut tells me he intends to use this series as much as he can)
-Diversity and inclusivity are important to them! And I want to support the new actors and characters that we all deserved to have a long time ago.

I wonder if it was supposed to be Cas before it was going to be Jimmy.
I remember rumors of massive rewrites of 15x20 BEFORE the COVID shutdown, so it's possible both the Jimmy and Cas endings were on the table at some point.
Whether Cas or Jimmy, Dean was never going to reciprocate out loud because the show was on the broke CoWards network. I would bet money that Dabb was counting on the actors to get the point across without words.
Point is, both can be true. Or it could be the Jimmy thing was never true and it's what Misha was told to say!
We don't know. All we know is this show continues to cause misery in all our lives and probably will forever and ever amen.

Never Say Goodbye
Summary: Nightmares are hard to banish, even when the light returns.
A/N: My very dear friend, @deanswaywardgirl has been having a tough time lately and missing Dean a lot. So, she requested a comfort fic that would make Dean's death a dream, so he can still give her the comfort she needs. I was more than happy to oblige. I hope this helps, sweetie and that it's what you wanted/needed. ❤️
Warnings: Discussion of the events of Dean's death in the finale. Sadness. Comfort. Fluff.
Pairings: Dean Winchester x Y/N
Word Count: 893

"Y/N!"
You came awake with a start, the echoes of Dean's goodbyes so loud in your ears you couldn't comprehend the words he was saying as he leaned over you.
Worry caused vertical double lines to form between his brows, as they always did when he was concerned.
"It's okay, Sweetheart, you were just having a bad dream." The bed dipped slightly as he sat down beside you. He pushed your hair back off your shoulder and thumbed away the tears that had fallen while you slept. "Are you okay?"
You stared at him in disbelief. He was here. He was sitting beside you, the heat from his body warming your frozen limbs. You reached up and brushed your fingertips across his forehead and down his cheek, nails rasping against the light stubble there.
Dean took hold of your hand and pressed your fingers against his lips. The warm breath you could feel escaping his mouth made tears spring to your eyes again. He was here.
You launched yourself at him, wrapping your arms so tightly around his neck that he grunted a little.
"Y/N, that's a little tight." He said, half laughing, half choking.
You let go but only to scooch around behind him on the bed. He twisted around to try and figure out what you were doing as you pushed his dark grey Henley up his broad back.
"What are you doing?" He asked, completely dumbfounded.
Still not answering, afraid to speak, you spread your hands wide across his shoulders, marveling at the expanse of smooth, unblemished skin you found there.
As you took in the sight, and felt the heat of him, the strength and vitality of him thrumming beneath your hands a sob broke through and choked you. Before you could stop them, tears and sobs were pouring out of you as you wrapped your arms as far as they would go around his shoulders, pressing your cheek between his shoulder blades.
"Hey!" Dean twisted in your arms until he was facing you and you climbed into his lap, tears soaking his shirt, while you listened to the steady beating of his heart.
Dean seemed to accept that you just needed to cry, so he simply readjusted you both until he was leaning back against the headboard of your bed with you securely sheltered in his arms, his big hand sweeping up and down your arm.
As your sobs turned to hiccups and then to shuddery breaths, Dean tilted your chin up with one finger. He kissed your cheeks where the tracks of your tears were still visible.
"Do you want to tell me about the nightmare, Sweetheart?"
You shook your head but finally spoke. "It was so horrible. It was so real." You paused for a moment and then spoke in a whisper. "You died." New tears sprang up at the memory of watching the life leave Dean's eyes. You shuddered and clung to him again, with your head tucked under his chin.
Your voice was wavering and thin when you spoke. "You were...you and Sam were fighting these vamps and one of them threw you, and impaled you on this like, this piece of rebar and...and...you couldn't move and there was no one left to save you, no Chuck, no Jack...and all I could do was watch you say goodbye."
You wrapped your arms around him again, holding as tightly as you could willing away those images and again finding peace from the strong, warrior's heart you could hear beating under your ear.
Dean held you tighter, and kissed the top of your head. "Well, it was just a bad dream, Y/N. I'm here, Sweetheart, and I'm not going anywhere." His voice was reassuring and strong, deep and warm and it flooded over you, soothing you and bringing you peace.
He pulled back so that he could look at you. "We won, Y/N. We won. Chuck is dead, our fates are ours, and we can do anything we want now." His smile was bright and the happiness you could see there made it impossible not to feel brighter as well.
He leaned down and pressed a soft, slow kiss to your lips, gentle and undemanding. It was a promise. A promise of the tomorrows to come, a promise of a life lived well and together, a promise of holidays and birthdays, anniversaries and beginnings, so many promises wrapped up in one sensual sweep of his mouth against yours.
"I love you." He whispered against your neck as he trailed kisses across your skin. "So much."
More tears came to your eyes, but this time they were tears of joy. You tilted your head back, giving him easier access.
"I love you too, Dean Winchester. Never say goodbye." It was a confession and a demand all in one breath.
Dean brought his head up so he could stare deeply into you, like he was branding your soul with his words. His forest green eyes were serious but warm and he pressed his forehead to yours.
"Never."

A Turn of Events
I’m not going to stand back and let my emotional support characters be treated like that.
Here’s something that I’m pretty sure cannot possibly be worse than what was aired.
wc: 556
Part 1 of Chapter 1
Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 |  Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7
He could feel the rebar inside him. The blood had started to seep through his jacket. He managed to keep his voice steady, “Sam. I don’t think I’m gonna be able to move.”
“Dean? What-” Sam moved closer and realized what had happened.
“All that and a rusty nail takes me out, huh?” He let out a dry laugh that sounded more like a wheeze.
“Wait, Dean, hold on.” Sam stepped back and started looking around for something, anything that would help.
“Sammy, stop. It's okay. It’s gonna be okay. You-”
“No. It's not! It's not, Dean! We’ve been through too much for me to be okay with this! And stow that ‘let me go’ crap. This isn’t over.” Sam turned around, ignoring Dean’s strained breathing and called out, “Jack? Jack! Jack, can you hear me? Please, we need you!”
They heard a light flutter of wings and Dean felt a hand on his shoulder. With a small flash of white light Dean was healed and brought down from the wall.
“Jack!” Dean gasped as he looked at the boy standing next to him.
“Hi Dean, Sam. I was going to meet you in the bunker but I guess we’ll do this now.” He took a deep breath and walked over to one of the nearest crates, confusing the Winchesters who were surprised he even showed.
“Amara and I got to spend some time together and we came to an agreement. She decided it would be better if instead of the ‘Light and Darkness’ both existing in me, it would be better with her.”
“Wait, you mean she is now her own… ‘being’ and you're...” Dean waved his hand vaguely at Jack.
“Just me. Well, not yet. She’s still here. We have some things to get done first. But when she does leave I’ll be just, me, Jack. Still a Nephilim, though. I can't really go on without my grace. She said I deserved a life. And a childhood.” he finished with a smile.
Sam returned the smile but they still had a few questions, “Wait, what do you mean stuff? Do you need anything from us?”
“Yes, actually we do. First we need to stop over at Hell.”
Dean took a moment to appreciate how casually that sentence could be thrown into their conversations before asking, “Can you maybe give us more details kid?”
“We’re going to see Rowena. She found an ancient book that might have something about putting the Empty back to sleep.”
Dean’s face fell at the mention of the Empty. “You’re putting the Empty to sleep… forever?”
“Yes. That’s what I need you for. We made a deal that said we would put it to rest as long as we get some angels in return, you know with Heaven slowly dying and everything. And a few demons- Rowena’s request. But it won't give up Cas. So one of you will have to go in and pull Cas out while the other helps Rowena with the spell.”
Sam felt his heart lighten for the first time in maybe years when a light that had been gone a long time returned to Dean’s eyes as he asked, “We’re bringing Cas back?”
“Of course. I am god for now. What else would I do with all this power?”
“Well, let’s go to Hell then!”
(ᵖˡˢ ʳᵉᵃᵈ ᵘⁿᵈᵉʳ ᵗʰᵉ ᶜᵘᵗ)
First of all, I didn’t get the ending I wanted, or even one I could tolerate, so I’m writing my own.
I see many people are doing whole rewrites and I can’t wait to read them. But I just want to see the boys have peace and not send the message that you have to die for it. You can have a good life no matter what you had to go through in the past. There is always hope.
So I’m going to fix this clusterfuck of a finale and write a season 16. It’s just going to be TFW 2.0 and their extended family (ᴮᴱᶜᴬᵁˢᴱ ᶠᴬᴹᴵᴸʸ ᴬᴵᴺ’ᵀ ᴱᴺᴰᴵᴺᴳ ᵂᴵᵀᴴ ᴮᴸᴼᴼᴰ. ᴺᴼᵀ ᴵᴺ ᴹʸ ᵂᴼᴿᴸᴰ!) doing regular things with maybe an occasional decapitation.
Only fluff. Pure domestic fluff. No pining. No hurt without comfort. No angst. My babies are going to be happy. I promise. And I’m not leaving till I wrap this up with a fucking bow.
This is just part one of the first chapter because I am incapable of writing more than 500 words in one post. I’ll be posting at least twice a week and the whole fic will be on AO3 once finished.
If you want to be tagged in my season 16 fics please let me know.

The SPN ending sucked, here’s how it should have went:
At the end of 15x19 Jack says his whole goodbye, Sam hugs him and asks about Eileen and the others, and Jack says they’re all exactly where they were before they vanished.
Dean, standing behind Sam, asks about Cas.
Jack sadly says that he can’t go in the empty, but he can make a door for Dean to go and try to get him.
Sam and Dean look to each other, both knowing they have their own things they have to do, Dean going with Jack to get Cas, and Sam going to reunite with Eileen.
15x20 starts with Jack and Dean somewhere, Jack making a door and Deans getting ready to go through. Jack wishes him luck, and Dean takes a moment to try to apologize and mend things with Jack. Jack vanishes, and Dean opens the door, walking into the empty.
Cut to black, now we see Sam wherever Eileen last was before vanishing. He stands there, looking for her but he doesn't see her, then he turns around and there she is. They have their reunion, romantic music swells and they kiss.
Back in the empty, Dean’s surrounded by darkness, no sign of anyone, calling out Cas’s name. Finally he sees Cas from a distance, running to him but as he approaches you see his smile fade and his face hardens. It's the Empty, looking like Cas. He points his weapon at it and asks where Cas is. The empty laughs and says how it finally got Cas to shut up, there's no way he’s letting him out. Dean says how he’s never going to stop trying to get Cas and if it kills him, he knows the ‘new god’ and he’ll just keep coming back, over and over again. The Empty gets angry but realizes it will never get to sleep if it doesn’t give Dean Cas. The Empty says fine, but under one condition. Deans about to ask what it is, but the Empty is gone. Dean goes off looking for Cas again, and eventually he finds him, lying on the ground, Dean yells ‘Cas!’ in that way he does, and runs over, grabbing him by the shoulder (same spot as Cas had grabbed Dean) and he lifts him to his feet, cradling his face as he holds him up. Cas slowly gains consciousness and looks to Dean confused “Dean?”
Dean does his whole, ‘come on buddy let's get you out of here’ and then half carries him. As they walk, Cas says he feels different, he thinks the empty took his grace. Dean looks pained but keeps going. They get out, and outside the impala he looks Cas over. Cas is avoiding eye contact, he didn't think he’d have to face Dean after the confession. Dean holds his face again, getting him to look at him. “Dean you don’t have to say anything.” “Shut it Cas, I thought I lost my chance to say this, so I’m going to now. I love you too.” Romantic music swells, they kiss.
The next shot is the bunker, a cheesy montage starts, it shows hunters, ones we know, ones we don’t, coming and going from the bunker, some in the bedrooms, some eating together, some looking over lore. The bunker is now offered as a home for any hunter who needs a place to do research or rest, a place to call home. The boys know they’re leaving it in good hands. Next we see Sam and Eileen carrying boxes up a driveway to their new home, they smile at each other and then Sam looks to the right, Dean and Cas have boxes too, walking up the driveway of the house next door, the dog following. Next we see Dean flipping burgers in one of their backyards, Sam walks over with more meat, Cas is sitting at a table with Jack and Eileen, we see her run her hand over her pregnant belly. Later we see Sam and Dean running around their front lawns, playing with Sam’s toddler, the dog chases them. Dean catches the boy, lifting him and giving a tickle attack, smiling as he glances over at Cas, who is standing on the porch with a cup of coffee next Eileen, smiling and watching as well. We can see holidays, birthdays, Jack dropping by, and whatever else, but one thing we know for sure, is that everyone’s happy.

YOU KNOW WHAT
I have an even better idea for a finale that doesn't involve the brothers dying in the end, we still see everyone in Heaven, and we get some REAL META.
Open up on the Roadhouse, maybe we see all the characters coming together confused. Unsure what's going on but happy to see their friends - and people they don't know but soon figure out what they have in common (Winchesters).
We then get Jack and Cas appearing, Jack having saved Cas. They explain how they've changed Heaven and what they can now do. But as a perk, they can look down on the Winchesters from a television Jack gifts them all (I will admit I was reminded of a fanfic I can't remember that had a similar concept but devastated me when reading lol)
And so we get the group, different pairings watch Dean and Sam live life and what not, and we cut from the Roadhouse to the Bunker or wherever they are. There are discussions and theories, I mean people notice that Dean isn't doing so well even tho he tries. And whenever Cas comes in he looks sad as the screen focuses on Dean. Mary and Bobby tried talking to Cas about this, but he says that he's fine up here doing what he can. Someone finally has enough of Cas's moping.
It's John.
John tells Cas he should go see Dean, basically making up for all the shit he put on Dean by saying that, from what he's heard Cas made Dean happy, and he deserves to be happy after the hell it was having someone like him for a father (maybe reference memories from the 300th episode, but also justifiable John Winchester semi-redemption).
Cas, stunned, ends up agreeing and then he blinks. We pan to the television screen and Cas pops up behind Dean. Dean startles but before Cas can say anymore he's tackled by Dean, thoughts lost in a heated embrace. Everyone in the Roadhouse cheers them on and Mary kisses John on the cheek "you did your boy good."
Then we get some more clips of Cas back, domestic living, Dean and Sam retiring because Cas gave up his grace and Dean wants to try for a normal life. Sam is scared because he's been with Dean so long, even though he has Eileen he isn't sure if he's ready. So we have Dean's speech he gives Sam in the barn but not dying nor invest.
And we see the boys get in their respective cars, Bunker turned off, and drive away. Camera pans up to show the TV in Heaven and someone hits the power button, turning it off.
Thoughts?

happy - a 15x20 rewrite fic
spoilers for the shitty shitty end to SPN below!
After they get Cas back, things change. With Amara and Michael now co-ruling heaven and Rowena in hell, all of the hard stuff is over. It’s just them-team free will 2.0, finally truly free. For a while they don’t even know what to do, but they figure it out.
Sam and Eileen want to stay in the bunker. It’s finally become home to Sam, the first place he’s ever even considered ‘his’. And sue him, he doesn’t want to leave. He doesn’t want to leave hunting either because….it’s what he does. It’s the family legacy, and now that no one’s breathing down his neck and forcing him into it, it’s fun. Saving people is his job, and he likes it. Eileen likes it too, which works out well for all of them. Sometimes they go on hunts together, a badass team that all monsters fear. But most of the time they stay in the bunker, training other young hunters in the ways of fighting, lore, and protection-they become the teachers of the hunting world. If you have a question, you can call them, and they will have an answer-even if it takes them an hour to dig it up. And Sam is happy.
Dean tries to hunt. He does, but….it feels wrong. He’s not a killer anymore, and maybe he never was. It takes him a while to dig up the courage to call Sam, but Sam gets it. Dean wants a life. He moves to a town just outside of Lebanon, taking only a few records, his car, and Miracle (and maybe the house is 20 minutes away from Sam, brother instincts don’t quit, okay?) and buys a little house surrounded by trees. It’s quiet and nice. He gets a job as a contractor, helping people build houses and fences and whatever else needs to be done. He likes it. It’s hands on, easy, but not so easy it’s mindless. He also volunteers as firefighter. He visits Sam on the weekends for Winchester family dinners. And he’s happy.
Cas moves in with Dean. It’s almost unspoken, what they are. But they are. He gets a job at a library. They keep bees. They’re neighbors call them ‘crazy old men’, and they consider sharpie-ing it on their mailbox. Dean says “me too” every day, and no one stops them. It’s peace and love and what they both thought they could never have, all at once.
Jack is around. He spends a lot of time in heaven, learning from Amara and Michael. He learns to control his powers, listen to prayers-all the angel things. But sometimes he’s on earth. He visits Dean and Cas and reads books on their old shelf. They make dinner together. He calls them Dad and their old hearts almost burst. He visits Eileen and Sam too, and together him and Sam convince Eileen that they need a dog. They name him nougat. Sometimes they go hunting, cause Jack still likes helping people. He learns how to be a human.
Sam and Eileen get married in a church. It’s a quiet little ceremony, with only some friends. Eileen’s dress is a little white sundress, nothing too fancy. Sam wears a suit anyway, and sue him, he cries (but so does everyone else). Two years later Patrick Winchester-Leahy is brought into the world, and three later he gets a sister named Cara. Sam and Eileen stop the hunts and stick to the teaching.
Cas and Dean never get married per se, but one day when they all meet up for the Winchester Saturday Night Dinner and Movie, they have silver bands on their ring fingers. No one really brings it up.
And they are happy.
shameless plug here’s my ao3, i’ve got a winchester sister thing over theree, check it out plessssssssss - https://archiveofourown.org/works/19809940/chapters/46904236
