hi I really love your art style and I’m an aspiring artist so I wanted to ask, what’s your step by step process for drawing faces? do you use references for each pose or do you just wing it? and for bodies, how did you learn to draw with perfect proportion?
Thank you :D 💕 there’s still a lot of learning for me to do, but I will do my best to explain my process and answer your questions :)
1) Faces
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I usually start with a circle and overlap it w a rough oval face shape, and then I put a cross that cuts through the middle both length- and width-wise. I also usually mark where the hair line is (roughly halfway from the top of the head and the middle line). Then I start sketching in features of the face. This can of course vary, but usually eyes fall in the middle of the head (the middle line), mouth is about halfway from the chin to the eyes, the nose is halfway between the mouth and eyes, and eyebrows are half way from eyes to hairline. Obviously you can exaggerate these features, and change proportions, but these are just the basics. And even with exaggeration, people still tend to draw with a ratio that pleases the brain (i.e, thirds).
Sometimes I need another pass and do another sketch w more detail, but for faces I usually like to just jump into lineart w a rough sketch. I start with the eyes/eyebrows because I feel like they are the most expressive part of the face, and that you can tell what a person is thinking or feeling by their eyes and/or eyebrows alone (Which is probably why I love designs where characters have masks/helmets that only show their eyes or have white eyes). And I love drawing the little wrinkles in them when someone’s angry or pensive haha. Then I draw the mouth/nose, then cheek/jawline, then neck, and I do the hair :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once you know the rough basics, you can adjust certain features. For example, maybe you want more angular cheeks with a long face, or a kid with slightly curvy cheeks to show their youth. Maybe you want someone to have a more square jaw, but big round eyes. Etc etc. BUT the proportions are roughly the same. You’re free to experiment though and change up proportions.
2) Poses/Bodies
Tumblr media
Okay, I really should use more references, but I tend to just wing things😭 I sped up a 15 min doodle so maybe it helps w the process, but I usually just start drawing a face and then figure out what I want to do from there. However, if there’s a pose I want but can’t figure out, I will look up a reference. And then that knowledge gets added to my brain. The ability to wing things doesn’t come from nowhere. It helps to do studies and experiment, because the more you observe different poses and try them out yourself, the more your brain starts to understand how bodies work in a 3D space, and you will be able to recreate or make your own poses from your own mind.
As for the body proportions, I feel like that’s the thing I need the most practice in, but again it’s the same advice w studies and experimenting. I also have a couple tips I answered a while back, that should be somewhere if you scroll through my #art tip tag
Hope this was helpful 😅 and have fun drawing and creating !

on thursday we did a single 45 min figure study for our work art warmup thing. i kinda wish i had a warmup for our warmup lol...
because it was a long single pose i tried approaching it the same way i do for the environment studies (with a grid and a stubborn persistence to accuracy) and what i discovered is... my innate sense for eyeballing proportions is definitely inaccurate LMAO. the end result looks fine but man. i spent 2/3rds of the time limit just trying to correct the size of things and get everything positioned correctly. you dont want to build a house on hecked up foundations, after all! i didnt want to have zero coloring by the end so when there was 15 minutes left on the clock i adamantly stopped fiddling with my sketch. thankfully that was enough time to get some shadows and highlights in
below the cut is a timelapse i started when i realized this was going to be harder than i thought
lol you can see my blockout attempt at the beginning went so bad i had to delete and start over. when i changed the bg to be darker is when i summoned a second grid because i couldnt figure out how to get the negative space between the ribs and the arm to be big enough (turns out i needed to raise that whole shoulder/pec area upwards)
but yeah... dang... its true... i really do just draw things wider/thicker by default! its probably a cartoony/exaggeration thing but still. bad habit. a field to improve on, etc etc. maybe i just need to stop drawing people who are short and stumpy (me) all the time

The Flies Hum thy Name (2021) Cătălina Bucos & Ada Kopaz
10:15 min
Trying to reflect on the relationship between body, gender, environment and public space, we began the deconstruction of our own bodies and their limitations, which we then transformed into a poetic video work. The film merges images of Super8 and digital footage with self-written poetry and self-performed choreography. The performers are in an empty, dry swimming pool, and simultaneously in an imaginary space overlapped with projections of water. We witness a sequence of tragic allegories: impossible desires, cyborg bodies, a flooded and polluted environment. The two seek for the public in the private, they are longing for the origins: the watery feel of the womb, for being one with themselves and with nature. Unity is found within the process.
Cătălina Bucos
Coming from the East to the West, I currently study media arts and film at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. I was born and grew up in the Republic of Moldova, in the midst of its ever transition from Socialism to Capitalism — an environment that has naturally radicalised me. Starting with producing DIY chic house decorations, performing children ballet or NGO social spots, to creating politically engaged fine art prints, text works, sound installations, performances, protesting flags, bedroom produced experimental videos or fictional films my body of work is a critical-political, chaotic-systematic search for narratives and formats that allow themselves to be angry, joyful or touching.
Ada Kopaz
Ada Kopaz was born in Köln in 1987. He studied Fine Arts with Hito Steyerl at Universität der Künste in Berlin and graduated in 2015. In late ‘19 he started Diplom II at KHM, Köln, where he studies with Phil Collins and Isabell Lorey (o.a). He commits to power structures within public space, commons, discourse and the questions of accessibility to these. Besides photography as everyday practice, he works with fly-posting, installation, sketches, video and sound. As part of ZUGANG collective he has been documenting Berlin’s „Corona-Pro- tests“ since 03/20. Together with other artistic and activist groups they performed and plan interventions in public space and work on a long-film to be presented later this year.

Tutorial Worksheet | Task 2
Student Name: Harriet
Task 2: Individually [10-15 mins]
Analyse your categories themselves.
Reflect on and respond to the ideas and questions below.
Typology
Typology could be broadly defined as the study of types, or the systematic classification of the types of something according to their common characteristics. Typology involves acts of finding, counting and classifying facts (or elements, etc.) with the help of the eyes, other senses and logic.
Write and/or draw your responses below and overleaf.
As a designer/creative, you could also explore creative, visual and non-logical methods to create new typologies, if consistent with your strategy. E.g., do you notice half the elements are pink in colour or hand-crafted? Is this interesting, helpful, or offer opportunities or limitations worth considering?
My creative practise tends to have a set of constraints and variables in the formula of my wider body of work. Colour is a predominant theme where I work with limited colour palettes, yet materials are a variable in which there are no limitations. I tend to lean towards pink and red and black and white colour constraints. Hand crafted is another typology, where all of my ideas are crafted in their infancy by hand, wether this be as a written idea or sketch.
-tactile
-hand crafted
-colour palettes
-tools
-music
-literature
-fashion
-heritage
-textiles
What do your current categories tell you about the elements contained in them?
Your answer here.
There is a common tactile theme. I tend to like things with a physicality and weight to them whether this be in themes or literal form. The relationship between fine motor skills and hand crafting something that is also a common theme that comes up in my categories.
These categories reveal the nature of my objects. Music dictates my creativity and allows me to stay productive and focused. Having these objects surrounding me allows me to get lost in my own world that I have built and collected both consciously and subconsciously. Collection momentos through out my life allows me to catergorise these and feel safe and supported and nurtured in my environment.
What underpins your categorisations? Are the elements grouped by a key characteristic, material or medium – or something else? e.g. typography, fluid type, poster design, etc?
Your answer here.
At the heart of all my catergorisations is me as the creative. All my objects link to an area of me and my life that holds significance to my upbringing and growth as a person, as a daughter, as a sister, as a woman.
Feminist themes lie at the centre of all of my objects as theses ideals underpins my life style choices.
What do you these categories tell you about your selection methods, influences and biases?
Your answer here.
My choices reveal a definite bias towards punk sub cultures and the aestethics that I identify with. As well as a bias towards feminist culture and influcnes in art and desing and music.
Bias towards textiles methods, a pattern in the things I reach for when starting a creative project. This is something I could reflect on to potentially widen my scope and enrich my designs however I also like that I have a certain niche to work within. Finding a balance within this could be beneficial in order to allow myself to be a well rounded designer .
What might these categories tell you about you as an individual, and your design practice?
Your answer here.
My categories indicate that I am someone who is highly influenced by surroundings and all types of art, literature, music and visual. That my design poractice is not linear and takes many steps and uses tools to become an idea and eventuate into a piece of work.
Categories: music, textiles, fashion, tools, heritage.
Textures and phsyciallity are important for me. I need to be able to visualise a project along the way and stay engaged through manual making rather than fine tuning and slow burn process to get results. I need the tactiity to keep me motovated and interesting and engaged.
When seen together, what story do these elements and their categorisation tell an audience?
Your answer here.
When placed together all my elements create an alamgatmation of a bedroom setting. This was my intention playing with scale to create a point of interesting rather than laying them out in a conventional way that they would normally be viewed. I wanted to use scale to play with perspective and create a herieachy. The story they piece together is one of my history and heritage and what I really identify with. The blanket background provides a sense of comfort that embraces the viewer and indicates that this is a home setting, truely a sanctuary and a space of grow and creative nurturing.

Using opportunity cost and cost-benefit analysis to make transportation decisions in my daily life.
Being a college student on a monthly budget, most of my daily decisions are dependent on the cost associated with it as my goal is to achieve maximum satisfaction from my spending. This involves me taking informed decisions whether for small amounts like while buying groceries or for more significant purchases such as concert tickets or a laptop. Since I have my childhood friends and my elder brother studying at the University of Southern California, I frequently make trips to Los Angeles to meet them. This leads to a hefty monthly travel expense depending on my transport mode. There are two options, take an uber which can range from 50 dollars to 100 depending on the time and availability, or Flixbus which costs between 7-12 dollars one way. When making this decision of what transportation to use, I apply two economic concepts opportunity cost and cost-benefit analysis. After making several trips last semester I have enough information about the pros and cons of taking an uber and Flixbus allowing me to form an accurate cost-benefit chart which is the main basis upon which I make my decision. I use opportunity cost as a secondary helpline as that keeps changing week on week.
I made a rough sketch of the benefits of taking a bus in my head and then Uber as listed below.
Benefits: FlixBus
1. Always on time which allows me to plan my day in LA in advance.
2. Cheaper in comparison to Uber, with the potential to save 50 dollars one way by taking the bus.
3. Safer option is going with more students than alone in an Uber.
4. No wait time as fixed arrival at the UC Irvine bus stop.
5. Free wifi on board the bus allows me to keep myself occupied with movies.
Benefits: Uber
1. Taking an Uber from UC Irvine to LA is generally faster than taking the bus. It takes around 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic whereas the bus can take upwards of 2 hours.
2. More comfortable as I get a wider seat with more leg space.
3. Don’t have to use headphones while watching movies and can listen to music through the Bluetooth system of the car.
4. Get dropped at my destination directly instead of the bus stand which is 15 mins away from my brother’s apartment.
5. Uber comes right outside my dorm so I don’t have to walk with my luggage. The bus stand is a 15 mins walk from my dorm.
These different benefits are what I take into consideration before making my decision.
Opportunity cost:
1. Uber: By taking an Uber, you are saving time that can be used for other activities, such as studying or spending time with friends and family.
2. FlixBus: By taking the FlixBus, you are saving money that can be used for other expenses, such as groceries or textbooks.
Based on this cost-benefit analysis, it appears that taking the FlixBus from UC Irvine to LA is the better option for those looking to save money. However, for those who value their time more, taking an Uber may be the better choice. It's important to note that there may be other factors to consider, such as comfort and convenience. Uber may be a more comfortable option, while FlixBus may be more convenient if you're traveling to a specific location that is close to a FlixBus stop. Ultimately, the decision on which mode of transportation to use should depend on your individual preferences and priorities.
Overall, the decision-making process involves evaluating the opportunity cost, conducting a cost-benefit analysis, and making a rational choice based on the net benefit. By applying these economic concepts, you can make informed decisions that maximize your utility and satisfaction.

✨ Dream Girl Guide ✨
After reading @2pretty's Dream Girl Guide, I knew it was time to get down to business and also set some serious goals for the rest of year.
Although I have evolved a lot in the past year and managed to incorporate a lot of new beneficial habits, I feel like there is still room to grow and glow-up. So let's make the next 6 months count and hold myself accountable with this post to keep myself on track. 💕
The dream girl version of myself is an elegant, graceful and witty beauty, who is worldly and speaks multiple languages. She oozes confidence and enchants her surroundings with her knowledge, wit and charm. She seizes opportunities when she sees them and unapologetically asks for what she wants. She has clear boundaries and does not let any man or woman disrespect her or her boundaries. Her home is always spotless and smells fresh, she is completely on top of her house chores. She has a trim figure, which he tones through consistent workouts. She has a booty!! she built in the gym. People want to be around her energy, she is grounded and calm and practices mindfulness on the daily. She always looks naturally put together, takes absolute pride in her appearance and SPF is her best friend. 💖
Tumblr media
12 Qualities to create her:
♦ speaks HSK 5 level chinese
♦ oozes confidence and charm in social settings
♦ has a killer job and focuses on her professional development
♦ has a booty (does a booty count as a quality? i say yes) trim figure and graceful posture / flexibility
♦ knows about Art
♦ practices minimalism / essentialism
♦ Slow, clear and pronounced speech
♦ great financial knowledge and builds up her investments
♦ is kind and compassionate
♦ continuously seeks new knowledge in various areas
♦ speaks intermediate Russian
♦ is grounded and calm, has control over her emotions
June
✨ Ramping up my Chinese ✨
I am staying in Taiwan for the summer on a Chineses language scholarship. Initially it was more to just revise what I have forgotten last year and enjoy a covid free summer, but now I really want to push my command of the language to new heights. I will study 2-3 hours per day (next to my daily language course) and try to seize every opportunity to really further my Chinese and not fall back to using English. It is going to be uncomfortable and awkward sometimes, but it will pay off.
July
✨ Confidence and Charm ✨
I will use July to explore the dating scene in Taiwan and also use this opportunity to further build my self-confidence and charm when it comes to men. This may sound like an unusual quality to train, but i want to make it my goal to feel completely unintimidated and at ease around men. I will clearly state my boundaries at all times and not allow anyone to push or violate them. I will state my wants and needs and see who rises to the occasion or not. I will only focus on men's action and not their words. This month will also give me the opportunity to discover more about myself.
August
✨ Finding a killer Job ✨
August will the month of intense job-search and career exploration. I have already polished my resumé and I will send out at least 15 job applications. Next to that, I will do extensive research on graduate / Masters programs and decide at which universities and for which programs I will apply.
September
✨ Booty time ✨
I will work out at least 4 times per week, really focus on high protein intake and a good mixture between strength and cardio workouts + stretching. I will focus on finally growing that peach of mine 🍑. In edition, I will do this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5HBnDig8hY&t=5s) 8 min posture exercise video every day to strengthen my back and help me look more graceful and elegant.
October
✨ Work of Art✨
October will be the month of Art. I've always wanted to get more acquainted with it, so in October I will research about the Art world at least 3 hrs per week, get more familiar with the different art periods, artists and styles. Plus I will try to visit at least 2 galleries.
November
✨ Minimalism / Essentialism✨
Before the Christmas mayhem starts, I want to refocus on minimalism and essentialism, being intentional with the items and things in my life. Essentially Marie Kondo-ing my life. Decluttering my apartment and closet, taking inventory of what I own, what needs to be polished and better taken of or what needs to be replaced. I will revisit my minimalism habits and check if i have kept on track with them during the year (e.g. am I buying things because I really need them and will serve me in the long run or I am I buying emotionally and/or instant gratification?). I will try my best to make this a no-buy November, unless the item is essential to my life / growth or if I have to replace something.
December
✨ Slow, clear and intentional speech✨
I know that a lot of people tell me that I sometimes speak to fast and unclear, thus making it hard for people to follow and keep up with what I am saying. As I fear it could sometimes diminish my presence and credibility, I will actively use December to try and work on this. Whether that is through guided speech exercises that I will look up online, or get a speech the therapist, remains to be decided.
I have sketched out my plan for the rest of 2021 and plan to revisit my dream girl guide at the end of December, to plan anew and adjust and recalibrate accordingly for 2022 ♥️.
✨ Let the glow-up gods shine their light upon me ✨

A totally self indulgent compilation of my favorite works on this blog of the year June 13, 2019 - June 13, 2020
I wanted to do this for the blog's first anniversary but then completely forgot about it lol.
The following lists are all in chronological order according to the date each post was first published.
Top 10 panel edits:
Tumblr media
#1: Don and Gilda - Chapter 138: Demon serch (1)
Date: Jun 14th, 2019
Time: ~ 1:30 h
My very first redraw from my very first edit posted here, so it deserves an honorable mention. Back then I was young and inexperienced, I didn't even apply a gray filter (lmao I was so unskilled I even unintentionally scratched the picture, I hadn't realized until today). I'm actually very happy my first redraw was of Don, boy deserves all the love.
Tumblr media
#2: Emma and Ray - Chapter 140: I’m Here!
Date: Jun 28th, 2019
Time: ~ 1 h
Back then this looked like so much work to me!!! And to this day, I think it turned out pretty well. I'm particularly proud of how the bow turned out. This is one I was really proud of right after having finished it; it gave me the confidence to try redrawing bigger areas. Also, the edit were I first applied the opacity of layer / opacity of brush for the gray filter that would have stuck with me.
Tumblr media
#3: Krone's birthday edit
Date: Jul 15th, 2019
Time: 15 mins
I don't know I just really like how Krone's hair vanish to a more sketch-like style here– and consequently, how I managed to replicate such effect. I think Krone's beautiful.
Tumblr media
#4: Emma, Norman and Ray - Chapter 153: Coward
Date: Oct 4th, 2019
Time: 4:07 h (and 67 layers lmao)
Probably the single panel redraw I'm the most proud of. That Norman panel was beautiful and very poignant at the end of a chapter I adored, so I believe it deserved all the time I've spent working on it. It's far from being perfect - the back of his head is too plain, and the difference between my brushes and the original brushes is pretty visible - but I still like it very much and am extremely attached to it. The horn looks kinda big but I honestly believe it to be more of an issue with the original than with what I had redrawn lol. Funny enough, the whole picture didn't make it to the final edit and had to be trimmed.
Tumblr media
#5: Full Score Trio - Chapter 154: A Breakthrough
Date: Oct 11th, 2019
Time: 29 mins
I don't have a particular reason for this I just think Emma's hair turned out amazing. It took just half an hour and I didn't even use references like. Wow. @Redrawing skills where did you go please come back
Tumblr media
#6: Mujika and Queen Legravalima - Chapter 158: The Reason I Was Born
Date: Nov 17th, 2019
Time: 2:09 h
Sis I love this so freaking much. The shift from redrawing almost exclusively people and clothes to redrawing this mess was so fun and refreshing. Even though it's a mess I think it turned out very clean and overall it looks beautiful? I remember after finishing this I felt so powerful, like now that I had redrawn this thing I would have been able to redraw anything I set my mind on lol.
Tumblr media
#7: Emma - Chapter 161: Never Be Alone
Date: Dec 13th, 2019
Time: 57 mins
Again no particular reason except this is a very cute Emma and I think the redraw turned out pretty well. There's this big lock on the left that doesn't make a lot of sense but overall I really like it. Cute Emma is cute, and I love her determination.
Tumblr media
#8: Emma - Chapter 166: Going Back Home
Date: Mar 9th, 2020
Time: 3:45 h
I'M SO FREAKING PROUD OF THAT RIFFLE I have not the slightlest idea why this took so damn long BUT I'M SO PROUD OF IT
Tumblr media
#9: Norman's birthday edit
Date: Mar 21st, 2020
Time: 1:04 h
This is cool! I didn't know I could manage to draw this, but I did it! The feathers were particularly hard to clean but I think they turned out fine.
Tumblr media
#10: Full Score Trio - Chapter 174: A New World (part 1)
Date: Apr 6th, 2020
Time: 2:11 h
I just think they're very pretty? I can't understand if I like Ray's face a lot, or not at all, but I think overall there was a lot to redraw and it turned out pretty cute! Sorry Gillian.
(Also insert pretty much every panel from the chapter 177 Isabella edit– I've spent so many hours on basically every panel there's no way I could choose only one).
Top 5 edits as whole:
#1: Emma and Ray - Chapter 140: I’m Here!
Date: Jun 29th, 2019
Complessive time: 2:57+ h
The very first edit I'm actually proud of; I'm really attached to it. It's the first edit I had put all of my effort into, and I remember feeling anxious people would have left it without notes. It kinda feels weird to think about it now, because I really don't care about notes anymore; yet, it somehow makes me happy to think that past-me wasn't let down. Thank you @neverlandstrio for your support, you may not remember but it really meant a lot to me back then! And it still makes me smile. You're the best!!!!!!
#2: Mujika and Queen Legravalima - Chapter 158: The Reason I Was Born
Date: Nov 20th, 2019
Complessive time: 7:12+ hours
This whole edit was an hella wild ride. It's midnight before a school day, when I think: "Mh, it's been a while since I last made an edit, why not make one about Musica and the queen from the last chapter?" And seven hours after this was born. I'm particularly proud of the queen's redraws on the 3rd, 7th and 9th picture (ofc), the areas which have been redrawn are pretty huge yet I think the difference with the original is almost impossible to notice?? @Redrawing skills where did you go please come back (part 2)
#3: Emma - Chapter 174: A New World (part 1)
Date: Apr 12th, 2020
Complessive time: 6:53+ h
I think the panels that were selected work very well together, especially considering the close-up / full body alternation. I love Emma, and I've always been kinda sad noticing that edits that focus one her take the less notes... She deserves all the love. Also, fun fact: for the last but one panel, I had redrawn Emma's whole left ear before remembering she doesn't have one, so I had to redraw the panel from the start. Besides from the error with the ear, the reason why this (and all the others after) took so long is because official panel take way longer to clean.
#4: Isabella and her children - Chapter 177: Mother
Date: May 22nd, 2020
Complessive time: 13:41+ h (ahah.)
Lmao tbh I can't understand how this has so few notes it's like. Technically speaking, probably the best edit I've ever done. I don't even like Isabella that much, I haven't got the slightlest idea why I decided to spend so many hours on this. Anyway, I find the composition (full body on the left / headshots on the right) really good looking in this as well! And I think the redraws turned out fine, especially Isabella's.
#5: The Promised Neverland manga ending countdown→ 1/7 chapters: chapter 1 - Grace Field House
Date: Jun 9th, 2020
Complessive time: 1:59+ h
I don't know how I came up with that idea for the composition but I find it really beautiful??? I think it does a pretty good job conveying the sudden, terrific shift of atmosphere from the first chapter, and I think that sharp bridge is very nice. I'm very, very proud of this.
Honorable mention #1: Full Score Trio - Chapter 154: A Breakthrough
Date: Oct 13th, 2019
Complessive time: 3:44+ h (+ 1:13 h of working on a panel that ultimately didn't make it to the final edit)
A very good chapter, and the edit turned out surprisingly amazing??? All the redraws look great and make it almost impossible to distinguish them from the original; honestly I feel like I'll never be able to redraw so neatly again lol.
Honorable mention #2: Don and Gilda (+ Norman) - Chapter 160: Shackles
Date: Dec 11th, 2019
Complessive time: 3:14+ h
That one is really one of my favorite scenes; I'm telling you peoples, Gilda and Don are a blessing to the earth. I think I've never mentioned it, but Gilda's hair is a nightmare to redraw??? More specifically, it takes me h o u r s to fill the texture without making it look too weird, it's the worst.
Honorable mention #3: Norman and Ray - Chapter 179: Compensation
Date: Jun 6th, 2020
Complessive time: 4:16+ h
I was so glad to finally be able to make a Norman / Ray edit, and it turned out it was just in time before the series' finale. I like how it turned out and I'm pretty satisfied with the redraws (even though my sister helped me with the lineart of some panels - it was exams time and I really couldn't afford to spend more time on it), too bad we didn't have more chapters that focused on the boys. Ray sweetie one day I'll fix your ear it's just today's not that day.
Btw, I justed realized I have never done an Emma / Norman centered edit? I'll have to make one eventually. I remember considering focusing on them alone for the chapter 154 one, but then I thought "even if the manga is gonna ignore Ray, I will chose to do not" lol.
Top 5 long posts:
#1: Reconstruction of how the Grace Field children were settled in the three bedrooms
Date: Aug 28th, 2019
I just had really a lot of fun doing it. I love putting all the little things to their own place, it's so calming to do and that's why I love making this kind of things. Also, loved how @temporoom contributed to the post! It was so nice of them to add what they had noticed to come up with more exact conclusions, that's one of the things I love the most about the internet.
#2: A study of how many times the characters of The Promised Neverland call each other through the first season of the anime
Date: Sep 10th, 2019
I REALLY LOVE IT! I mean it *was* kinda stressing to note everything, but it was very also very satisfying to see everything methodically divided and organized! And it's not just that– it's also the fact that it looks good. That's one post I have fun rereading because it's actually pretty! Also, even though it can be very stressing to learn to use new programs and sites, it's always very satisfying to look at the final result. Again, I really adore compiling these tiny little details! I would love to make more posts of that kind if i had the time.
#3: The Promised Neverland musicals headcanons
Date: Oct 27th, 2019
I mean it's literally. Putting my two favorite fandoms together how could I not love it. This is another one I really enjoy rereading, I find all the musical / character associations so fitting! I really want to make a second part, I hope to find some time to do it.
#4: Considerations on the reward / eventual series' finales (and Emma's sacrifice)

It's always nice to put down all your thoughts regarding a particular matter. It can take a lot of time (at least for me it does because... I need time to think about things), but it's so satisfying to see all of them there once you're done. Bonus points when, like in this case, it was something asked by someone else because “Wow! Somebody wants to hear my opinion on this subject! I'm flattered (◍•ᴗ•◍)”
#5: Some other considerations on the series' finale and Emma sacrificing herself
Date: Jun 13th, 2020
Pretty much the same as above. It's like some kind of clarity when the post is done and signed. Another fun fact, I had to censore the post a lot; the first version was extremely sharp and harsh, but I believe it's right to express your opinions calmly and politely.
Bonus: A thread of what the tpn characters would wear at the Oscars
Date: Feb 9th, 2020
Imagining all the children in those pretty dresses makes me so incredibly happy (╥﹏╥) I go back to look at that post a lot. I really love red carpets, I love looking at pretty dresses!!!!!
Lmao it's so funny how the post of mine I like the most are also the ones with the less notes
Anyway this was just a personal report! You don't have to read it all (or any of it actually). But it was indeed fun making it! Here's to many more months in the fandom!!!

[minutes] - Mallinson and 1 man come at 8 25/.. - had been at the Smithy about ironwork for farm-yard gates - then with John Booth setting acorns in Parkwood where the old road was the bit Throp's men missed - Pickels did not come till 9 20/.. - some time with him - to mend up Park- -wood wall - then a little while at Charles Howarth's -
Marian mended hole in pelisse sleeve and James brought me 3 pp. [pages] of 1/2 sheet and the 2 1st. pp. [pages] crossed from Miss Walker, Heworth Grange, sent with some orders to Washington for Mrs. Sutherland who is very busy, and quite accounts for her silence - 'and seems to speak with evident pleasure of the good account of my health - I think all will go well' -

Then out till after 6 - by Charles and James H- [Howarth] and the Masons Farm yard doors put up - John Booth setting acorns along the old northowram road alongside Park farm field - Pickels came at 9 20/.. a.m. and dawdling about - shovelling down soil (thro' 2 holes in the wall) from Halifax on this side of the foot of road wall between approach gates and arch - and John Pickels in the afternoon putting on tops with lime on Park wood wall -
dinner at 6 35/.. and coffee and came to my study at 7 3/4  - having read thro' no. [number] 2 (came this afternoon from Whitley's) for this month Paxton's Magazine of botany and register of flowering plants - Plants in the house should not be overwatered - 'the overplus of water will show its bad effects by the very dark colour and flabby disposition of the leaves; and if the plant receives too little, the leaves will turn yellow, and eventually die......allow the soil in the pot to have the appearance of dryness (but never sufficient to make the plant flag,) before a supply of water is given, which should then be pretty copious; but always empty it out of the pan or feeder in which the pot stands, as soon as the soil is properly drained' the the water to be same temperature as the room by letting it stand all night there or adding warm water - water colder than the room chills the plants - page 40. - take care of the drainage of the pot by putting plenty of potshards at the bottom
wrote the ends of my letter 3 pp. [pages] before and sent it off at 8 1/2, to 'Miss Walker, Heworth Grange, York' and my note to 'Mr. Booth Bookseller H-x [Halifax]' ordered no. [number] 1 Paxton's Magazine of botany (having this afternoon received no. [number 2]) for Miss Walker, and asked if Debrett's of this year would come for myself and for what he could get me Don's Miller's Dictionary with my aunt from 9 25/.. to 10 20/.. - read from page 276 to 306 2nd series Waldensian Researches Till 11 5/.. - from 11 3/4 a.m. rainy day and evening and stormy high wind - a gleam or 2 in the afternoon but not for long - Fahrenheit 53°. at 11 3/4 p.m. Letter from Mr. Bewsher tonight - very civil - Expense incurred 15/. - he directs to 'the honourable Miss Lister'......

Figure Drawing and Drawing 2 - 1/20/2021
You can work with the you tube video given to you on the link. Remember you can stop the video to give yourself more time in any of the poses and in the long pose .
Session One:
10 mins
Practice rendering the placement of the head .
First tip -
Head is an upside egg.
Watch the time lapse video to see how I do it. The top is wider the bottom. Top holds the brain (wide) Bottom the shin (narrow)
Always notice where the SHIN is in relation to the NECK specially when doing the contour and the  LONG pose.
Session Two
START of class (10 minutes )
Warm up by doing quick gesture sketches. Use the news print pad.
In Quick gestures we try to define the pose in ONE quick line.
This line is where the weight of the figure is held. Same thing you did on Weds,  warming up to loosen up.
Look from the NECK to the SPINE Or down to the FOOT if the figure is standing .
Which leg keeps the figure stable from falling or collapsing in standing poses ?
When the figure is sitting or laying down , notice the SPINE first then arm or body part that holds the figure.
That would be the gestural line .
Tip No. 2 :
The spine is not a straight line. Think of it more like a snake or loose S . For the first ten minutes practice finding those lines then add the shoulder and Pelvis line.
Session TWO b – 10 minutes
More gesture drawings but now we try to fill in quickly the figure with head included.
Session Three – 15 minutes
3 poses
5 mins each
One pose per paper
Contour drawing Starting at the head do not lift the pencil from the pad until you have drawn the whole figure. Go slowly.
For the third Contour pose ,
You will do a BLIND CONTOUR DRAWING.
That means that your eyes stay on the model and you do not look at your paper. Work large. This will look kind of funny but it’s ok!
Session Four - Proportions
Last part of the class
Third tip: the body is from 7.5 to 8 heads long . Below I have created a structure for 8 heads long.
I have added a video that demonstrates that, watch it to have an idea in regards to proportion.
Start with a vertical line in the middle of the paper, the medial line, that is the center of gravity. Make a line at the top and on the bottom.
See photo below 1a.
Tumblr media
Then divide that measure in half. Photo 1b.
Tumblr media
Now divide each half, top and bottom.
photo 1c + 1d.
Tumblr media
Finally divide all sections, see photo with lines marked Photo 1e +1f +1g + 1h.
Tumblr media
Now with that knowledge in mind find two poses where figure is vertical and implement that proportion guidelines as you draw the figure.
Use the remainder of class time.
Work that is not finished today can be completed between today and sunday the latests.
HW -
Self Portrait studies. Looking at yourself in the mirror , work on three studies expressing three different emotions. Work on the Newsprint pad and keep real life dimensions .
Post work completed today in class by 5pm.
If you are not able to finish everything, post everything along with HW  by 5 pm Sunday.

Fic: For The Love Of Maths

For the Love of Maths
“So, what are you doing for Valentine’s Day?”
Belle just gave Ruby a look, because for all Ruby’s own romantic dreams, she knew that Belle’s boyfriend was the least romantic person ever and his idea of a date night was asking her to help him grade his students’ papers and think up scathing comments for the worst of them.
Ruby and Dorothy always went overboard for Valentine’s Day, with flowers and chocolates and slushy cards, the full works. Belle didn’t mind that the fourteenth of February was just another ordinary day for her. The whole thing had become so crassly commercial that celebrating it felt like pandering to Hallmark’s particular brand of emotional capitalism.
Although, that said, it would be nice to have some romance in her life. She tried to remember what it had been like when she and Nick had first started dating, before realising that they had never really dated the in traditional sense of the word.
They’d argued a lot, and they’d spent long hours puzzling out the mysteries of the cosmos together whilst consuming copious amounts of coffee, and eventually they’d started having sex as well. They’d only come onto each other’s radars when budget cuts at the university had forced them to share an office and learn that there was not enough space for both of them and all Nick’s whiteboards.
They’d also learned that neither of them were very good at compromise. At all.
There hadn’t been evenings out in restaurants or cinemas. They’d just happened, without any real attempt at courtship on either of their parts. The classic enemies to friends to lovers. Belle wondered if they would ever have got together if fate hadn’t put them in the same space. Nick certainly wasn’t the type to seek out a relationship with anything other than complex numbers.
Still, they were together now – miraculously still together over a year after they first fell into Nick’s bed. Belle was moving in with him gradually; she wondered when he would notice that she had more of her stuff in his place than in her own apartment.
“Ok, ok, I know that you think it’s all a waste of time but come on, it’s Valentine’s Day. Not even a card? Nice restaurant? Candlelit Chinese takeaway? Something, anything to convince me that there’s the faintest spark of life in your relationship.”
“There’s plenty of life in our relationship!” Belle protested.
“Belle, arguing about Nick’s terrible handwriting being the reason that his maths is off does not count.” Ruby reached across the table and patted her friend’s hand in a worryingly motherly fashion. “I just don’t want you to get stuck in a rut. You need spark! Passion! You’re a passionate soul, Belle! You need to surprise him! Lie down on his desk stark naked with a rose between your teeth. Hide that little notebook of his down your panties and make him find it.”
“Ruby, there’s nothing wrong with our sex life, I promise you. Sex and romance are two different things. We’re just… practical, rather than romantic. We don’t need all that stuff.”
“Needing it and wanting it are two different things,” Ruby said sagely. Belle just sighed.
And she wished that Ruby hadn’t put the idea of romance into her head.
What she’d said to her friend had been true – she didn’t need that kind of gesture. She knew that Nick loved her, and he showed that in his own unique way. Well, he told her often enough, and she knew that he was telling the truth. She shouldn’t expect more from him, not when she was just as bad at the whole thing as he was.
Well, it wasn’t really that so much as she had no idea what kind of romantic gestures Nick would appreciate. If any. Lingerie didn’t really seem to do anything for him; he’d certainly never made any comment when she’d showed off new stuff for him so in the end she’d decided to stop wasting her money. He wasn’t the flowers and chocolates type.
Ruby was right – Belle was a passionate soul at heart, but the only thing Nick ever really got passionate about was theoretical physics. Normally so grumpy and taciturn, he turned into a completely different person when he got onto his pet topic, his eyes bright and his words animated, bold gestures all over the place as his marker flew across the whiteboard, sketching out the equations that would solve every conundrum in the known universe, and some in the unknown universe as well.
She smiled at the memory of his last breakthrough. She’d been in the middle of cooking dinner and he’d rushed into the kitchen and dragged her into his study, explaining it all to her and making corrections as he went along. He had been so excited to share the discovery with her, and he’d been happy all evening, even though dinner had burned, and they’d had to order pizza instead.
That was how he showed her that he loved her, Belle realised. He was passionate about his subject, and he always shared that passion with her. Although their specialisms and fields of study differed – Belle was far more interested in the here and the now and the provable rather than the theoretical – he always wanted to share that things that made him happy with her. It just so happened that the thing that made him happiest was physics, so that was what he shared.
They were both complete nerds when it came down to it, but they were nerds in love, and they didn’t need Valentine’s Day to prove that love to the rest of the world. Feeling much happier and more confident in her romantic relationship, Belle set off for home. Well, for Nick’s home. Her home from home.
“Nick?” The house seemed to be empty, and Belle padded through the rooms looking for her boyfriend. “Nick, are you here?” It was ridiculous to be asking an empty house that question, but there was always the off chance that he was hiding – for what reason she couldn’t fathom – or that he was lying in a heap somewhere having broken his ankle. There was no response to her call, and Belle resigned herself to the fact that he wasn’t home yet.
It was strange, he never really went anywhere aside from his office in the university and his home. Maybe he’d just got side-tracked and was late leaving campus. It certainly wasn’t the first time, but this was late even for Nick’s standards. If he was going to pull an all-nighter up there then he could at least have told her.
She texted him to ask if he wanted dinner and went into the kitchen to see what was in the fridge. Plenty of leftovers she could shove together and make something of. They were both terrible cooks, so fancy candlelit home-cooked meals were definitely off the menu for Valentine’s Day.
Her phone buzzed with the arrival of a message. Yes. Be there in 15 mins. Got held up. Left a note in the study.
Belle raised her eyebrows, because the study was the first place she’d looked for him when she began her search of the house and she hadn’t seen any note, but Nick was meticulous and if he said he’d left one, then he’d left one.
She went into the study again, looking over the paper-littered desk for something explaining his absence. Coming up short, she moved on to the post-it notes stuck all over the whiteboards reminding him to do things. Most of them had been put there by Belle herself and consisted of basic things like have you had breakfast yet, you workaholic?
Again, there was nothing new. She was about to call him and ask where his note was, but then something caught her eye at the bottom of one of the whiteboards, some tiny text packed in tightly. She bent down to read it.
If E=MC2 then U+ME=heart. I love you, Belle, please come and live with me permanently.
Belle had to sit down on the floor in shock, vaguely registering Nick’s key in the front door.
“Belle?” The study door opened, and Nick peered in. “Are you ok?”
“Yes. Yes, yes, yes. Yes, I’ll move in with you, you wonderful nerd.” She scrambled up off the floor and threw her arms around him, making him stagger back out into the hall.
“You found the note, then?”
“Yes.” Belle kissed him. “So, what held you up?”
“Oh. Yes. This.” He held out a Barnes and Noble bag. “They lost my order and had to go out the back to find it. Happy Cohabitation. This is for you.”
Belle looked inside the bag to see a hardback copy of For The Love Of Maths. She’d been talking about the new book ever since the publisher had announced it.
“You remembered.”
“I remember the things that make you happy. And it seemed fitting, given the season.”
Belle just pulled him in close and kissed him again. Who needed Valentine’s Day, anyway?

My take on He is Psychometric - Part 1
Since we are currently at a crucial point in the show and a lot might be revealed today, let's take a step back and return to the night of the Apartment fire. Didn't the woman who opened the door in the 1st episode say, " What is it mister?”
After that question, she got stabbed by the person at the door. The cap and jacket of the person at the door seems different than the one Sung Mo's mom was wearing while trying to escape. The likelihood of the killer being a man is certainly more than that of being a woman.
Well, based on the information we have so far, if we look at the timeline of the incident on 3rd December, 2005:
06:00 PM - Sung Mo returns to the apartment. Jae In’s father stops him to treat his wound. (Ref. ep 7)
06:15 PM - The three women argue with Jae In’s father and return to their apartment. (#702) (Ref. ep 4)   [Misdirect in ep 1 for the argument scene. Time shown is 7:15 PM.]
After the argument, Jae In’s father enters the building to stick the flyers. A missing person’s poster is on display. Name : Kang Eul Soo.  (Ref. ep 4)
06:20 PM - At #701 - Sung Mo is studying in his room when the three women ask Sung Mo’s mom to join them. (Ref. ep 5)
06:25 PM - Once the women leave Sung Mo sees Kang Geun Taek (cast credits)(our mystery man) staring down at them from the window across their building. KGT starts walking towards Sung Mo’s apartment. Sung Mo instructs his mother to do as he says. (Ref. ep 6)
A few minutes later, we see KGT entering the building with a suitcase. (Ref. ep 4)
Just as KGT enters the building, Sung Mo’s mom, who’s running away,  hides as soon as she sees him. (Ref. ep 1)
A few minutes later KGT enters an empty apartment. While he retrieves his knife we see a few fire safety posters in his suitcase.
07:19 PM - The killer is done killing the people in the house and is setting up the scene. Probably a minute later, switches on the oven with the timer probably set at 10 min. (It was at 9:24 while the killer went down the stairs.)  (Ref. ep 1)
07:21:35 PM - Lee Ahn and his parents are on their way out. Walking towards the lift on the 15th floor.  (Ref. ep 1)
~07:23 PM - When the oven nears the 7 min mark it explodes. Lee Ahn and his parents are stuck in the lift on the 7th floor, where the explosion took place.  (Ref. ep 1)
We then see the killer climbing down the stairs to get out of there.  (Ref. ep 1)
After the explosion, when we see Sung Mo near the elevator. He is still in his uniform. Given the timeline, it appears difficult for Sung Mo to be the killer and considering how it is the man with the suitcase who killed the women, the killer isn’t Sung Mo’s mom.  (Ref. ep 1)
The above timeline/events lead to the following questions:
1.  What are the similarities between the Apartment fire case and the Care Home fire 11 years later? - (i) killer’s MO, therefore the most likely the killer too (ii) Room no. 701 (this can’t be just a coincidence.) (iii) Sung Mo’s mom
2. Why did Sung Mo not run away with his mother? - To distract the stalker probably? He could’ve planned to meet her later. However, after the apartment fire, he was never able to track her thanks to KGY helping his mother.
3. Who is Kang Eul Soo? - 1. She could be the unknown 4th dead woman who took the place of Sung Mo's mom. Also, Sung Mo aware of what KGT did had no choice but to identify the corpse as his mother. He couldn't risk exposing his mother. 2. She could be Sung Mo's mom.. (every time a woman's sketch comes up in this show it feels like Sung Mo's mom.) KGT must've put it up? Why a different name, and a family name same as his? Who is Sung Mo exactly?? This show can take any turn right now and I can't seem to decide between option 1 and 2 right now. The power of a writer's imagination is definitely more powerful than my instinct.
4. Why did KGT have the fire safety instructions posters in the suitcase he was carrying? - Jae In's father could've come into contact at with KGT at some point. (That would be interesting.) Or KGT's intentions had always been to frame YTH for the murders?
I seriously have more questions. But no time. So I'll stop this here.. feel free to add people!! It's gonna be an interesting ride ahead!!

Comparing online education
Coursera
Cost: One course is $29-$100 per year per person and $400 per person per year for unlimited courses.
Timing: Coursera claims the skills taught can be learnt within 4-6 months while you pay the cost of the course. With their online degrees, they have accredited master's degrees that cost also up to $25,000 and take 1-3 years of study. With this timing, you can expect, as they say, a similar experience to University. It doesn't seem to offer any fast track places, however.
Target market: Looking at the target market, I see that Courera is popular throughout the world and most popular in English speaking nations however it does notably have a global presence, for the term "Coursera". They seem to want to offer an education to those that may be disadvantaged in the sense that they don’t have good access to transport or live in rural areas.
edX
Cost: Fees range from $50 to $300 depending on the course.
Timing: In an example case, there's a course on edX named "Pricing Options with Mathematical Models" which has a length of 10 weeks and is 8-10 hours a week. This a typical example of a course on edX.  A further example would be another named "Supply Chain Analytics" which would be 8-12 hours a week for 13 weeks. edX typically has courses that span between 1-3 months long.
Target market: The term "edX" didn't show much worth, as it an acronym used by many companies for many different applications. So I then searched up "edX learning" to get a more specific idea of the company. The term "edX learning" showed a very specific interest in only Canada, the USA, the UK and very much so in India. With related queries showing "machine learning", "deep learning", and competitor sites as the top search queries after that. This shows that there's something unique about edX within the AI sector and programming and is important to note.
Skillshare
Cost: $15 per month with one month free trial with $99 billed if you pay annually, for unlimited classes.
Timing: Skillshare is a video-based platform and features a wide gallery of various videos online. Most of them are from 30 minutes to 2 hours long. Skillshare typically and prefers to squeeze content into a short space of time, giving the user instant rewards from the skillshare video. This it probably why it's one of the most popular platforms.
Target market: Since skillshare is widely publicised I believe that I can simply use the term "Skillshare" to get an idea of his target audience. This showed a global presence with Western and Eastern English speaking countries being the most popular searches of Skillshare. The topics for this search quote are the most interesting over the queries, whereby the terms "Adobe After Effects", "Freelancer", "Master class" and "Sketch" are the most popular. This shows to me that there's an interest in learning these programs and that's possibly something I could take advantage of.
Lynda
Cost: The basic plan costs $25 per month and annually it costs $19.99 per month.
Timing: Lynda like Skillshare offers pay for view scheme, though most of their top courses are longer than Skillshares, thus offering them to a different market. I note that their courses on average range from 3 hours to 6 hours total and are typically richer in detail than Skillshares. This is because they have a professional evaluation scheme instead of it being community driven.
Target market: To get the most accurate search term for this company I've used "Lynda.com" for this. Using the sites URL has shown a good amount of data for me to analyse. Lynda.com is shown to be the most popular in the USA, Canada and Australia. With the top terms showing that "training", "free", "torrent" and "education" are the most popular terms and queries. From here I can see that people are interested in whether the service is free, one thing I've noted is that all the sites try very hard to hide their pricing and costs for the user. Furthermore, the fact that torrenting is a popular term related to the site shows that people see value in the site, but not enough value to spend the money to receive the products.
Treehouse
Cost: $199 per month for a job ready portfolio code degree, $40 per month for the professional package and $20 per month for the basic package.
Timing: Looking at TreeHouse learning I've gone onto their tracks section whereby they've got three track courses shown. They range from a total duration of 3 hours to 20 hours and are set In sections that last typically from 30 mins to 1 hour.
Target market: Teamtreehouse.com is a term that is related to the topics of "Javascript", "Learning - field of study", "courses within education". This shows that coding is of particular interest to the users using treehouse. In the future TreeHouse as recommended by Chris (my lecturer for this module) will be one of my main research interests as I’ll be building a UX site of my own in the future.

how to write a talk: a case study
I found out that I would be giving this Thursday’s combinatorics seminar talk on the Friday before... so I had very limited time, and I decided to try something different. That process left me with a lot of scrap writing, so I decided to use it to sketch my entire process from “know the results and only idle thoughts on the presentation” to a finished product. This is in part for other people who might be interested in the talk-writing process, and in part so that I can reflect on how to do better.
Parameters of the talk:
We have the room reserved for 80 minutes.
But the talk doesn’t start until 4:40pm so it’s considered polite to finish in the usual 50 minute timeslot that an ordinary class would take. That leaves tons of wriggle room, so usually a talk can take the full 50 minutes and a bit more, with questions going for as long as seems productive.
Most of the audience are combinatorialists, but almost none of them are graph theorists (myself included, frankly).
There are usually 1-2 undergrads, half a dozen grads, a few postdocs and occasionally a professor.
The basic structure of this post: after the introduction, there are three main parts. The first is fairly technical, where I give brief summaries of the talk in increasing length, commenting in-between on how I might expand for the next one. The second is much less so, since I am now at the stage where I’m preparing orally, and the notes are just records of key points of improvement.  The third section is similar, but focuses specifically on the spit-and-polish stuff carried out <36 hours before giving the talk.
------
The talk in one sentence:
We determined the expected matching polynomial for random lifts of cycle graphs (also go check out GRWC).
Words to define:
matching polynomial
graph lifting
“expected” in this context
The talk in one paragraph:
The matching polynomial of a graph $G$ is $\displaystyle \sum_{k\geq 0} (-1)^k \mu(G,k) x^{n-2k}$ where $\mu(G,k)$ is the number of matchings with $k$ edges. Instead of trying to compute matching polynomials, we can do something harder: for a graph $G$ we say that a graph homomorphism is $H\to G$ is a $d$-sheeted covering graph if the preimage of every vertex in $G$ is $d$ vertices in $H$, and if it is a local isomorphism. We were interested in computing the “average” matching polynomials for $d$-sheeted covering graphs, and we succeeded in doing this when $G$ is a cycle.
(also go check out the Graduate Research Workshop in Combinatorics)
Places to expand:
classical matching polynomials of the cycle and path
a bit of background on covering graphs
a little less terse definition of a covering graph
still pretty ambiguous what “average” means
explaining the formula for $\mathcal M_d(C_n; x)$
The talk in one page:
Recall that for any (loopless) graph $G$, a matching is a collection of edges where no two edges share an endpoint. We denote by $\mu(G,k)$ the number of matchings with $k$ edges, and we define the matching polynomial to be a variant on the generating function:
$$\mathcal M(G; x) = \sum_{k\geq 0} (-1)^k \mu(G,k) x^{n-2k}.$$ In general, matching polynomials are fairly difficult to get our hands on: the function problem of computing $\mathcal M(G; x)$ is #P complete. However, for some of our favorite graphs, we get some of our favorite polynomials; in particular we recover the Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds via $\mathcal M(C_n; 2x) = 2T_n(x)$ and $\mathcal M(P_n; 2x) = U_n(x)$.
Because of some concerns in spectral graph theory, matching polynomials were generalized by Hall, Pruder and Sawin in 2015 to $d$-matching polynomials, which have a fairly straightforward-looking definition:
$$\mathcal M_d(G;x) = \Bbb E_\lambda \mathcal M(G^\lambda; x).$$
where $G^\lambda$ ranges over all $d$-sheeted covering graphs of $G$. These are essentially covering spaces in the topological sense that also respect the combinatorial structure. Formally, we say that a surjective graph homomorphism is $H\to G$ is a covering graph if it is a local isomorphism (that is, $f:N(f(v)) \to N(v)$ is a bijection for all $v$).
[ Technically, we cannot average over the (proper) class of all covering graphs; so we should instead average only over those on a fixed vertex set— we do not consider these graphs up to isomorphism. ]
I worked on questions related to $d$-matching polynomials with Garner Cochran, Corbin Groothuis, Andrew Herring, Jamie Radcliffe, and Ranjan Rohatgi during the summer last year at the Graduate Research Workshop in Combinatorics. We were able to explicitly compute the $d$-matching polynomial of cycle graphs in terms of Chebyshev polynomials:
$$ \mathcal M_d(C_n; x) = \frac{\mathcal M(P_{nd+n-1}; x)}{\mathcal M(P_{n-1};x)} $$

Comment on non-combinatorial aspects
Consider proving $A\cdot B = A\coprod B$. Do not mention isomorphism classes as an alternative state space. Do not do an example in Covering/3. Use the $\sigma$ in the old writeup for Results/4.
Regarding Covering/3/Motivation: I think it will be fine just to mention that this stuff gets used in spectral graph theory. You do need to know some of those details, though, since it should come up in questions if you do it right.
Intermediate stages:
Time spent
Saturday: 9 hours. (Everything up to this point)
Monday: 2 hours. (Second timed run; talk is <65 minutes; a long interruption made it impossible to determine more precisely)
Tuesday: 3 hours. (Could not give full talk today; rooms were busy! Very nervous about the whole thing.)
We can completely remove the covering maps section. This could eliminate the pre-writing.
I’ve learned enough about the other groups to answer reasonable questions from Theo. It turns out that the finite complex reflection groups do indeed have a special role in the HPS proof. Also, I’ve learned enough about Ramanujan-ness to make a passing comment about them somewhere. I still have no idea if it’s possible to make the Legendre polynomials.
Also, any Cayley graph and any generalized Petersen graph can be written as graph covers! Wow! (Maybe do the ordinary Petersen graph as an example? Not the primary example though; you want a cycle with several edges.) Suddenly very excited about algebraic graph theory ;)
OH SHIT YOU FORGOT: You need to know how the “acyclic” polynomials came up in stat mech and then like chemistry or w/e.
Title and abstract:
Covers of Cycles and their Matchings
The matching polynomial is a variant on the generating function for matchings on a graph. Following new developments in spectral graph theory, these were generalized to “d-matching polynomials” in 2016 by Hall, Puder, and Sawin. In this talk, we will describe how to compute these polynomials for cycle graphs, stopping occasionally to observe the broader world of algebraic graph theory.
(submitted on Tuesday afternoon)
[ The title is kind of boring, but I couldn’t come up with anything better that was at all descriptive. ]
------
Final Push:
Time spent
Wednesday: 7 hours. (Ended on a high note!)
Thursday: 0.5 hour.
I wrote a mathoverflow question and Godsil himself said he doesn’t know of any answer to the realizability of Legendre polynomials. So I’m not going to sweat it.
I gave a full presentation (for the first time since Saturday, yikes!) and discovered that my Intro/1 was terribad. Polished that up. Also smoothed over some other joints, including the reveal in Covering/3. Could be happier with my concluding sentence, but it’s serviceable.
Finalized timings on Wed. night (44–60 minutes):
Pre-drawing & pre-writing: 5 minutes
Intro/1 – Covering/2: 20 minutes
Covering/3 + comments: 10 minutes (can be shortened to 4 or 7 min)
Covering/4 – Results/2: 15 minutes
Results/3 – Results/5: 15 minutes (can be shortened to 5 min)
Replicated twice with error ±1 minute.
This gives three natural points in the presentation to take a breather: evaluate speaking speed and facetime with audience. Ask for questions if you need a longer pause.
Woke up late on Thursday and ate a big breakfast. Taught my classes and then spent a half-hour doing a run-through of the talk “sans writing”: just stood in front of a blank board, recited the words, and tried to focus on eye contact.
Final Outline:
Each number represents approximately one blackboard. The breather points are denoted by **.

The Talk Itself:
In the end, I went through the longest version of the talk that I practiced, and it still finished in about 47 minutes O.O [ Maybe I missed a few remarks from Main/3/Motivation, and I definitely was less verbose in Results/1 than in practice. ]
We had a smaller crowd than usual. One of the postdocs (who I’ve talked with, and who I respect a lot) made quite a few comments during the talk and asked many pointed questions afterward. This was the first time that I’ve ever given a talk where I felt challenged by an audience member. I think I kept composed, but it did shake me quite a bit, especially since the smaller turnout was already was working at my anxiety that maybe the material wasn’t so interesting. But I was thinking about it afterwards, and it occurred to me that if he really thought it was trivial and boring, he probably wouldn’t have been so vocal.
Still felt like I botched the conclusion. But the Q&A went very long and maybe served as a de facto conclusion— I hope the audience interpreted it that way, since it was a much better ending, frankly :P
Concept to Q&A: 22 working hours.
Afterwards I went shopping, bought a bottle of rum, drank with my roommate and played Starcraft late into the night. Good day, all things considered :)

My name is Jan Min. I’m 65 years old and am a passionate watercolorist, living in the Netherlands (follow me on Facebook!).
As a child, I already made drawings on a daily basis, but 15 years ago, I picked up this passion again. After five years of academic schooling in diverse techniques and following masterclasses in watercolor, I decided that watercolor was the ultimate medium for me!
With my paintings, I want to capture interesting subjects in a mystic and colorful atmosphere. The representation of lights and color tones play a central role in my work, inciting an emotional connection between the spectator and the subject. I have found that, for me, the ultimate medium to achieve this is watercolor!
My favorite subjects are cities and seascapes!!! The last, because I sailed all my life and the thrill of it is a great challenge !
I can paint plein air, or make at least one or more tonal sketches before I make a work. Good photographs can also be of interest. I prefer using strong colors, warm and cool, often using a lot of pigments to get the maximum in light. When travelling or having a walk, I never forget my little sketchbook (very valuable!!) Make and sketch what you feel!
My favorite paper is Saunders waterford or Arches rough, both 300 g, and Escoda brushes in all sizes. Colors I use: Cadmium red, cadmium yellow, cadmium orange, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, yellow ochre, neutral tint, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, lavender, cobalt turquoise.
The advantages of watercolor is that there is a great diversity of technique: wet in wet, wet on dry, dry on dry, dry on wet and all kinds of edges like sharp, soft, lost and found and dry brush strokes. The more diversity, the more attractive the painting! Add good cool and warm colors and shadows and the light gets in by itself!
HOW TO PAINT A FISHING BOAT IN ROUGH SEA
I start a study/sketch in b/w (2B)
I paint the sea and waves with a wet in wet method
Then add some yellow ochre and blues to obtain contrast in colors
When the sea is almost ready, I paint the boat. This is the easiest part of the painting!
And finally, with all the details (but never too much!)
Making shadows always gives the joy of light!! Look at the next examples…
I do paint every day, trying to improve techniques and looking for subjects, helped by the stimulating factor of being a member of the committee of IWS Holland (International Watercolor Society) ,which has the goal to stimulate watercolor in our country, but also worldwide. Many meetings with all of the other international members really does stimulate and offers good learning moments!
Secondly, it’s also a good change to do exhibitions worldwide (USA, India, Albania, Indonesia, Denmark, Bulgaria, Italy…) Teaching and doing workshops are my pleasure and give me a very good opportunity to learn! This summer, I’ll be teaching a workshop in Greece! Click below to join me!
First lesson to my students: never want to be perfect… what is more beautiful is a perfect imperfection! Paint with your heart beyond the technique! The water will do the work! Make good variations, put in different kinds of edges and kinds of strokes. Choose a subject which has an emotional part in your soul!
The spectator will automatically feel your passion!!! Many times, people have said to me, “I feel how excited you were when you painted this!” Can it be more clear? The spectator meets your own enthusiasm! In other words: we give our own feelings to others through the paint!
