FIGURE DRAWING / FINAL ASSIGNMENT- 4/03/2024
We will go over these instructions tomorrow in class for FD2 and on Thursday for FD1.
FINAL ASSIGNMENT:
The final assignment will be creating TWO stories in color using multiple figures in a one point perspective style.
You will be looking at the poses you drew during the semester and choose poses from your archives to create these stories.
Tomorrow in class you will have a final opportunity to work with different poses for this purpose.
MATERIALS
2 sheets of BRISTOL PAPER 18 X 24 ACRYLIC PAINTS BRUSHES
DUE DATE :
(FD2) Wednesday Class , April 10 @ 12:30pm in class critique.
(FD1) Thursday, April 11 @ 3pm in class critique.
When we look through art history, you will note paintings tell stories through the figures and as they are posed in multiple settings.
From Botticelli below in the Birth of Venus to many other painters, the figure is used as a means of creating interesting narratives.
Tumblr media
The painting above shows figures in the same middleground plane.
When we look at the painting below titled School Athens by Raphael, we notice a change of scale and proportion from the front to the back of the painting.
Tumblr media
If we analyze the perspective of this painting we can see the use of one point perspective to define the figures.
Tumblr media
As you begin to think about the Two paintings for your final, you will try to include figures in several planes.
Think of foreground as having your largest figure,
Middle ground reduces in size.
Back ground having the smallest size .
For this assignment, students will work horizontally.
You will go back to the drawings done during the semester and you will pick two sets of your three most favorite poses to create the two different stories.
If you do not find any figures you like then use the  video links used to draw the figure to find poses that can work for the stories you want to create.
Look at the poses, keep directional poses looking into the drawing to strengthen the composition.
Take figures from both of the links, I will add them to the class blog.
You will complete two drawings in color that depicts 3 figures living in a world of your choice.
Think of lighting:
Are they inside or outside ?
Is it day or night ?
YOU will be using acrylic paints on Bristol Paper.
For this assignment, You will NOT use the following colors:
BLACK , GRAY , WHITE OR BROWN TO DEPICT FIGURES OR SCENES.
I showed you in class how to create the colors needed to develop skin tone on the figure.
These drawings are not sketches , they need to look like finished products, or paintings.
SO PUT TIME , effort , diligence into them.
What will your storyline be ?
As you think about the story, consider the times we are living and have been living for Post Pandemic.
Think about how Pandemic Life has affected the world. How did it change our lives . This is the story you want to tell through these figures.
How would you depict them in a post pandemic world?
This assignment will commence on Wednesday night after class .
Just to recap about the issue of perspective:
Remember to think of having the components of a simple one point perspective:
Tumblr media
Below you see a composition with horizon line.
Tumblr media
Below notice the placement of the vanishing point. This point can move throughout that horizon line left to right.
Tumblr media
see how the parallel lines converge from one focal vanishing point.
Tumblr media
Finally incorporate the figures within those parallel lines to create the illusion of distance.
Tumblr media
You can coose the figures to be in any direction of your choosing , I will talk more about this at in our class.
Just remember to keep directional lines facing inward to create Emphasis.
As I have demonstrated in the photos above, you can notice that in one point perspective you need to have a horizon line, vanishing point and parallel lines that come from the vanishing point.
In a simple one point perspective, you can include a first figure (middle ground) , then you can add the following two figures either in the distance (background) or in the foreground.
The figure in the foreground should be the largest.
The figure in the background should be depicted as the smallest in relation to the figure in the middle ground.
Look at the time lapse included in this post.
Once figures are in place, you can create a world around them.
This is where you will use your imagination to create an interesting narrative.
COLOR AND THE FIGURE
In class we worked to create and mix color to get natural tones on the figure  regardless of race.
Even darker skins have the same tonal qualities albeit slightly darker.
For this portion I would like for you to use the following colors when depicting the figure.
Start out by laying in a palette with the following colors:
Yellow
Red (medium or Alizarin )
Blue ( Ultramarine)
Now you will begin slowly mixing first yellow  and red then add dabs of ultramarine blue.
You will begin to lighten the values slowly by adding white to get lighter tones .
Notice there is no use of black or brown.
Ultramarine will darken the skin in warm tonalities, white will lighten it.
You will be practicing these two approaches as you work to incorporate the figure in a pictorial narrative which will lead you to create and complete your  final assignment
See below paintings and how the figure is prominent in them:

DRAWING CLASS - FINAL ASSIGNMENT Universal Declaration of Human Rights Painting (4/03/2024)
On Weds we will continue working with the figure.
Make sure you have the following materials tomorrow for class:
Bristol paper
Acrylic paints
Brushes
As we get ready to end the semester , this class will have the opportunity to create and submit a work of art for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights exhibit in the Fall.
I will give students their Article number at the end of the class tomorrow when we review this assignment.
FINAL ASSIGNMENT:
Create a painting that expresses one of the 30 Articles of the International Declaration of Human rights.
There are three videos to watch in preparation for this assignment and revewing the IDHR website below.
One is regarding how children are used in sweat shops around India and the world.
The second video documents how the cosmetics industry works with slave labor as well.
The third video documents how your favorite chocolate brands are created using child slave labor. From Mars to Hershey's, M&M , Snickers all these brands are brought to you thanks to the use of child labor in Africa.
These children are usually abducted from their homes a three to four years of age only to be put in fields working 15 hour days for years. They are never reunited with their parents or family.
You will watch all videos and then look and review all 30 articles from the link included above  the class blog.
I will assign an article to each student on Weds in class .
You will then create imagery that expresses the importance of that article.
You will begin brainstorming the idea for work on this assignment starting on Tues after class.
This assignment will be due  Wednesday 4/10 at 09:40am .
We will have a critique on that day and at that time.
Materials:
1) You will need canvas 16 x 20
2) Acrylic paints
When you start reading about these articles consider how these rights affect yourself and your community and the world at large.
One example would be article Article 4 ,
“ No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms. “
When you think about this article , our first thought is maybe the American slavery of African Americans and Native Americans.
Beyond that historical content, how can we understand this article in present terms?
Think about human trafficking or drug trafficking which brings countless of individuals who are suffering through poverty from third world countries into different parts of the world.
Think about child labor.
This situation is still happening in parts of the world.
In India children are used in sweatshops for cheap labor.
In Africa child labor is used to mine diamonds and for chocolate plantations.
Watch the video below the talks about how that Hershey’s kiss and our snickers chocolate bar is made through the sweat of child labor.
These children are abducted from their homes at an early age and kept in servitude until they either scape or can pay their way out.
Below is a newspaper report from a couple of years ago about a truck which had over 39 bodies trafficked for the purpose of force labor in England.
These are two examples of seeing one particular article beyond past historical association.
Article 9  and Article 6 are two circumstances that conjure past and present association.
We witnessed this during the summer of 2020 here in America with the unjust death of George Floyd and so many other minorities who die at the hands of crooked law enforcement agents.
As you approach this assignment think of your duty as a citizen of the world.
How will you work towards a more just and fair society?
These articles offer us a template to live by.
As artist we have an obligation to engage in art that promotes peace and wellness beyond our boundaries.
Think about this as you create your artistic contribution for these rights.
I will post a link to the document above this post along with the videos to watch for this assignment.
Review them before class this Weds.
Below see examples from previous classes.
DO NOT USE ANY OF THE IMAGERY SEEN BELOW.
You must come up with your own ideas.

3D Final Assignment, Ready Made and the Dada Movement. (4/04/24)
Today (4/02/2024) students are working with the small clay sculpture inspired by your museum assignment.
You have today through Thursday end of class to complete it.
You are coming in today ready to complete the idea from your sketches.
MAKE SURE YOU BRING YOUR SKETCHBOOK TO CLASS TODAY.
These small sculptures will be fired as soon as they are dry and will be taken home before the end of the semester.
At the end of class time today we will discuss the final assignment.
As we move on to the last project of the semester, this class is going to work with the concept of ready made artwork.
I will talk more about this in class this afternoon towards the end of class time.
Make sure you are in attendance and on time.
I have also added some videos on this topic so you can begin to have and idea of what you plan to do.
There are four videos to watch.
Take notes regarding all four videos and make sure you note the name of the artists from the ICA videos.
Watch ALL the videos above.
Some have info regarding ready made art work from MOCA .
The other video, has information on identity and personal narratives from the ICA archives .
Take notes of your understanding of these processes.
Revisit this idea as you research the context of creating such works.
Why and how would a ready made be a suitable platform to convey a message ?
Remember that in sculpture we transform, redirect, restructure three dimensional objects for specific functions and purposes.
There’s a reason as to why this happens at different times.
Why do artists choose to express themselves in this fashion?
Now, Think of your own experience in this world.
How could you combine the idea of a ready made to emphasize the concept of  identity and purpose .
First create some sketches.
Think of materials that you have around you.
What could you use ?
Remember you can destroy and re-assemble objects to fit your needs and message .
How can you unify this idea?
Could it be through maybe color or shape or both?
Finally create a ready made that conveys your idea of identity and purpose in this time. How has Post Pandemic Life changed your perspective of this world?
What have we learned, how did our lives change for the better or worse.
This will be our final sculpture for this class .
Towards the end of class today, we will review this post briefly. Then for Homework , students will work to develop some ideas in their sketchbooks.
I will review your ideas on Thursday at 2:20pm.
Starting tomorrow begin collecting objects for your assignment.
You will have starting Thursday after class of this week through Wednesday of next week to complete the assignment.
You will also give a title to your work and post it in your portfolio with an artist statement.
You will present the work in class on Thursday , 4/11/24.
This will be our Final Critique and Final Day of class.
For this assignment you need to work in class and from home and you must bring the completed work to class next week on Thursday for in person Critique.
You need to show that you have engaged enough time and effort to express your idea .
You must also show your ability to express  excellent craftmanship in the execution of your work.
All work is due on 4/11 at 12:30 pm for a Final Class Critique.
On Wednesday 4/17/24 all classes will submit curated portfolios with artists statements.
Weds (4/17) will be dedicated to submitting Final Curated portfolio.
This applies to all classes, including this one.
I will have an additional post regarding the curated portfolio.
In the curated final portfolio you will be asked to submit pages from your sketchbook.
You will then add one final statement talking about your favorite project done this semester and your reasons for choosing that assignment.
Write a paragraph regarding your understanding of the project along with first idea sketches and submit to your Tumblr by 8 pm Thursday 4/04.
The semester is over and at this time there will be no extensions beyond the time frame given above .
So USE your time wisely!!!!
NOTE
As you assemble objects for your ready made keep in mind the following:
The original function and purpose of an object in essence becomes null when you are creating a ready made.
When we look at Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel below, that wheel is no longer a functional object but rather has transcended to a kinetic circle with lines on a base (the stool).
Tumblr media
The same thing happens with Man Ray’s work below:
Tumblr media
See below, some ready made works from history:
Tumblr media
Marcel Duchamp Fountain
Tumblr media
The original function of the object is nullified.
We no longer can use it as such.
A wheel that does not hold or move anything, an iron that does not iron.
Look at the objects you are thinking of assembling.
Are you keeping their original function?
If you are, invert their purpose so you can engage in the design qualities of the object.
For example , think of it this way:
a cup you can not fill
a stool that sits on something else
a scissor that does not cut but rather functions as chopsticks
See the irony and absurdity in the object and then contemplate the design qualites of the object itself.
Additionally how is color aiding or disrupting the concept?
How can we neutralize distractions and unify the idea?
Does using all the same color, black vs white, any other color,  help focus the attention of the form to create a harmonious interaction between design  and object?
I hope this shifts your thinking as you attempt to begin your work.
Below see some student examples from previous years.
Do not copy ideas come up with your own original concept.

MUSEUM DAY- ALL CLASSES - Weds & Thursday - (3/13 & 3/14/ 2024)
Students will use class time this week to attend the museum.
I highly recommend the MoCA exhibit in North Miami. The exhibit is very compatible with all three classes.
3D will choose to attend MoCA instead of the Lowe.
Unless otherwise stated, you need to attend the spaces in person.
Note: I gave verbal permission to a few students to attend a virtual museum.
Only those students that spoke to me will be allowed to do it virtually.
Museum Visit
Students will be visiting either of the following museums :
MOCA in North Miami or
LOWE Museum at UM
When you visit the space make sure to bring with you the following:
1) sketchbook
2) pencil
3) Student ID
You will begin your museum experience by taking a selfie of yourself from inside the venue as you begin your activity and posting it on your threads handle.
**( For those students doing the virtual format, you will take photo of yourself next to the laptop or computer.)
During your museum visit try to look for several paintings or artworks that catch your interest.
Take notes regarding what it is that you enjoy about the artwork.
Is it the composition and if so describe it in a few words ?
The way the materials are used, mention which materials?
Is it the way the elements or principles are organized, color, texture, the way it is balanced, how emphasis is created?
Are you connected to the message of the work, content, explain your answer ?
Finally, find a work or works you like and do several sketches .
Make notes regarding the composition, horizon, proportion , color scheme. Write the name of the artist and name of the artwork in your notes.
Figure Drawing :
Analyze paintings with figures . Create a drawing in your sketchbook using various figures.
Drawing:
Look at how art creates visual narratives, stories. Create a drawing inspired by this visit.
3D (MoCA) :
Pay attention at the power of structures and sculptures to engage audience, the materials and presentation. Create studies for future project (final Assignment might be inspired by this visit.)
Finally, close your museum experience by taking an exit selfie and posting it to your threads.
NOTE:
MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR STUDENT ID FOR STUDENT DISCOUNTS.
ALL PRELIMINARY SKETCHES PRODUCED at the museum and your notes from the visit MUST BE SUBMITTED TO YOUR TUMBLR PORTFOLIO BY END OF DAY on SUN 3/17/ 2024 by 5pm
