Why Nine is The Secondary Protagonist in Sonic Prime

I recently made an appreciation post about this edgy little fella, however, when I rewatch the show (yes I rewatch it several times daily, so what?) I feel the cogs in my brain turn and create several theories. Looking back at Nine, I realized he will be one of the BIG characters, not the big (relevant to the plot and development), but the BIG (really fucking important).

As in MIGHT BE THE DEUTERAGONIST type of BIG.

Sonic is the protagonist, as he usually is in his games, however, Nine is another huge character who is not only crucial to the plot but might also twist the plot as well.

A deuteragonist is an essential secondary character in a narrative, second only to the protagonist, and may act like a constant companion or someone who aids the protagonist. However, the deuteragonist can change from helping the protag to actively opposing them, depending on their own conflict or plot.

Nine already proves to be a huge character in Sonic Prime, however, in the first batch of episodes, Shadow does somewhat take up some of this role. However, he might change to become a tritagonist in future episodes. Someone who helps the protagonist, is the third most important character, and often the third member of the group.

So Nine might be the TRUE deuteragonist and I DO have a list of reasons why I think so.

So, with that said, let's begin.

1. He is already established to be an important character

From the first moment we meet him, we already know he's going to be a very important character in the plot. He fixes up Sonic's shoes and gloves figures out how to use a shard to open a portal, and is a very formidable ally. He is an important character to keep the plot going and to help explain the plot. However, it's not like those Sonic games, where he's just there to explain the plot. He HAS a character and personality, he's not just a cardboard cutout.

He HAS depth and complexity to him. Something I can appreciate considering the past media of any version of Tails the past years (not including Frontiers, that game was amazing). He's also obviously going to continue to be an important character in season two as well.

2. He's a very engaging character

Let's all admit it: Nine is the most interesting character in Sonic Prime. Not just because of his mindset of "get this however you can no matter what" and "do whatever it takes and needs to survive". Not just that but his snarky and cold personality combined with his nine-tailed badassery just makes him an engaging and enjoyable character.

The things he does can leave people scrambling for answers. Why exactly did he change his mind about helping the rebels? What is he planning? What is going on in that fluffy head of his?

So many questions that leave us waiting with anticipation for the next batch of episodes for answers.

3. People can relate to his trauma

Nine's backstory is what we expected, but that doesn't mean it holds back punches. Without Sonic to defend him from bullies, without Sonic to care for him and take him in, he learned to trust and look out only for himself. It's a sad backstory and it explains why he's so guarded and aloof all the time.

I've read posts that state they relate deeply to Nine and can immerse themselves in his character with empathy. I can confirm as being a victim of abuse. He's aggressive and snarky because he has walls, walls that he put up to never get hurt again. He doesn't try to justify himself in his backstory, stating he "wasn't minding his surroundings" instead of "I didn't know" or "it wasn't my fault" he shows signs of a sort of self-resentment. Again, I can relate SO MUCH to, thinking that I could've prevented it and holding myself responsible for not doing anything, that I could've stopped it from happening.

Those who suffer or have suffered can see themselves in Nine, and as a result, the sorrow we feel for him can hit harder if we know what it was like.

4. We don't know where his character is going to end up

Another bunch of posts I've seen about Nine is that we legitimately don't know where his character is going to end up. He's muddled deep in his mystery and inner turmoil that we can't see the deep end of what he's going to be. A hero? A villain? An Anti-hero?

Just what's going to happen to him?!

He has a plan but what is it?

5. He's the most controversial character

Nine's intentions and character have been put in many perspectives on what people think he's planning, what he's going to be, why he does certain things, whether he cares for Sonic or not, whether he trusts Sonic or not, and MORE.

He's been theorized and twisted into what people think about him and what he's going to do. In my opinion, if a character does this to a community, you KNOW you're doing something right. Controversial characters are very mysterious and morally ambiguous, you don't truly know why they do the things they do or what they plan, but you have your own ideas on what might happen and other people do too, despite them possibly being different from yours.

Controversy (WHEN NOT LEADING TO VIOLENCE AND DEATH THREATS) is very fun and interesting. Reading people's thoughts even if they differ from your own, with the possibility that they might change your own theories is a very enlightening and interesting thing!

6. He has a completely opposite goal to Sonic

It's very clear that Sonic and Nine have different goals that clash with each other. Sonic, being the all-loving hero he is, wants to return home and see his true friends again, not to mention help and protect the other shatter spaces. Nine on the other hand wants to make a new home, a world with just him and Sonic and nobody else, not caring for the other shatter spaces or anybody else.

Their goals clash with each other and can't be fulfilled at the same time. Nine's goal includes only him and Sonic and no one else. Sonic's goal includes others, not to mention these two are from two completely different universes.

It's clear these two, no matter how close they are, won't give up their goal for the other, so unless their willing to compromise, it might lead to something bigger.

7. His goal separates him from other variations of himself and others

While he is just another variation of one of the main characters, his goal of achieving something beyond his own universe along with keeping Sonic differentiated from the other main variations who want something within their own shatter space. Thorn wanted to keep the jungle from being destroyed, and Dread wanted the shard out of greed, the rebels want to put the council out of power and take back their land, the jungle variants wanted to eat and live among the jungle again, and the pirates are just typical pirates.

Unlike the others, whose goals can be achieved in their universes, Nine wants nothing to do with his own. Like Sonic, Nine's goal is related to the shatter space.

8. Nine truly has no one EXCEPT Sonic

Another thing to differentiate him from the other versions of himself and the main cast is how Nine has nothing to lose. Other versions of him have a group of the main cast, hell even Rusty Rose finds herself valued (not sentimentally but still) and useful to the council. Nine, however, has nobody until this bright blue hedgehog told him about a life he could've had, a life Sonic gave to his other self.

So it's no wonder he took the very person who can give him the same life to a new shatter space. He wants that desperately. It's no wonder he doesn't show an interest in getting Sonic home anymore, if he does that, the chance of having the life he always wanted, that hope, would be gone forever. I don't think Nine's going to let that happen easily.

9. Everyone roots for him and wants him to be happy

There are zero people that don't want him to achieve his goal of love and happiness. Not just for the fact that he's a version of a character we're already emotionally invested in, but also because Nine is his own person. He's still a person who was horribly abused to the point of being jaded and cold.

Seeing him smile or show comfort really melts my heart cause this kid deserves SO MUCH! I know you all agree. But it is depressing to remember that Sonic NEEDS to go back and restore his world, he'll have to leave Nine behind. I don't think they're going to go with Sonic taking Nine with him because of what might happen with the whole "they can't see each other" stuff.

And with how stubborn and desperate Nine is...

I'm curious about how they figure this out and resolve this.

10. He might affect the plot

A protagonist is not just the lead character who pushes the plot along, they also affect and can possibly change the plot as well. Sonic already kicked off the plot, it's possible for Nine to affect it in a BIG way. This can lead to a LOT of possibilities when you consider that. We KNOW he has a plan and it has something to do with the Chaos Council capturing him. This fact can lead to a LOT of interpretations.

Dont know if youre still doing the AU asks but if you are, 5 HC for an AU where Eri, running away from Overhaul, runs into Gran torino and while panicking rewinds him back to his prime.

1- Eri runs, and runs, and hits someone who swears and grabs and she squeezes her eyes tight as light rushes out of her and hands go away. She curls up on the ground, sobbing, and when new gloved hands grab her without a word she does nothing, just hides her face and hopes Chisaki will go back home slowly enough to give her a break before punishing her.

2- Sorahiko got knocked over by a wrecking ball of a kid, fails to bite off his reaction as he gets up and reaches out to help her up. But then she's glowing and his whole body is in agony. Sorahiko's heart isn't soft enough to keep holding on, and he jets back, dropping the kid. By the time he's on the other end of the street, holding on to the building, he's taller than he was a second ago. He holds his breath, but the glow fades and doesn't affect him more when he's out of range. He waits a second, then goes back and scoops up the kid, who doesn't move. Worn out, probably, and the bandages aren't a good sign. Well, he was on his way to Nighteye's office, so he just keeps heading there.

3- Why is he on the way to talk to Sir? Because it's the only reason I can think of to have him be hours away from his home in that area where Eri is. So let's say Gran is there to update him on the fact that AfO is probably definitely back after the Hosu nomu attack. Gran brings Eri in, and that's about the moment that Eri realizes she is not being carried home by Chisaki. She looks up when she's put on a chair and Gran calls for Sir, ignoring the sidekicks at their desk. Sir comes down but stops on the stairs, staring at Gran with a dropped jaw, trying to figure out why someone would dress up as a young, tall, handsome, in his prime Gran Torino. And also why there's a crying child there. Gran snaps that it is very much him, he got hit with a quirk, and would Sir like to do something useful, please?

4- Sir apologizes to Eri for Torino's bad manners, and asks her what's wrong. She mentions Chisaki's name, something he knows as a connection to the Yakuza but not much more, and then explains the bandages when asked. It's a pretty clear, terrible case of abuse, and as he used his quirk, they're allowed to step in instead of handing it back to the police. Eri is terrified that Chisaki will find and attack them for taking her, but Gran says he didn't lose his brains with his wrinkles- he knows how to notice if he was being followed, and he was too quick for a tail. Then he asks how long her quirk lasts for, and she starts crying again because she hates it and can't undo it. For a moment, Gran and Sir share a look. A "we're terrible people for thinking about this" look, a "but, if she can rewind people..." look, a "Toshinori..." look. Then Sir looks down and shakes his head. Obviously it won't work, or All Might will refuse, because otherwise Sir have seen the difference in that vision of his death. Gran lets it go because he doesn't want to think about the vision either, he's still not happy Sir looked without permission even if he also wishes Toshi were enjoying retirement by now.

5- well, that's almost true. Gran changes the topic and says "Well, since we know Toshinori won't actually die of a heart attack on seeing me like this, why don't I go over there to show him in person?" Sir puts his head in his hands, but can't think of a way to stop him. Gran holds out his hand to Eri, says UA will be a safe place to wait, Nedzu will let her while Sir takes care of the paperwork on her case, and she can come see All Might. Eri blinks up as she takes his hand and asks who All Might is. Sir collapses to the ground, but Gran just laughs, and tells her stories on the way there.

+1 Toshi didn't have a heart attack but he did faint. Izuku was very close to it, eyes nearly popping out of his head before he looked around for the real Gran Torino since this is clearly another obvious prank.

Loser Round 1: Eridan Ampora (Homestuck) vs. Tails Nine (Sonic the Hedgehog)

Eridan Ampora:

Eridan is someone who is pushed into a role in his society that he feels he needs to act a certain way to play properly. In his society, if you don't live up to certain expectations, you will likely be literally killed - so in his mind, it is a matter of life and death. He preaches about being genocidal and racist, but never acts on his words. He's never taught how to treat others kindly, just treated like shit himself, even when he's TRYING to be kind or serious or ask for something. And then, when he cracks under the stress of their circumstances and genuinely loses control of himself, falling Grimdark, the fandom demonizes him for his actions (killing and attempting to kill a few other characters). The fandom tends to either ignore, deny, or not realize that he went Grimdark - as this is a more subtle situation than the other time we see it, where it's bluntly stated, whereas with Eridan it's based exclusively on the colors used. He's just...a kid who wasn't taught right from wrong. When it comes down to it, he needed help that he wasn't getting, and a large portion of the fandom hates him for the actions that stemmed from this.

Tails Nine:

it might just be me, but i still keep seeing posts where nine is just summarized as "tails but emo" and it. kinda ticks me off because. nine is very obviously a version of tails that didn't have a sonic – or anyone – to save him, so he grew to rely on himself and *only* himself, and it shows.

there's just... it could've been so easy for the tails we know to have become just like nine if it weren't for sonic. nine never had a sonic to protect him, so he made himself seven metallic tails to utilize instead. nine never had a sonic who made him be proud of his tails, so he makes it look like he only has one. nine never had a sonic who made him feel loved, so he stuck to the ground, because reaching for the sky is something only idiots can hope for.

until he met sonic.

and god, just watching the episodes where these two interact can make your heart feel *so* warm, because nine is finally getting the love he deserves. you watch him reach for the instinctive snark before being shocked by sonic's genuine kindness. you watch him praise sonic even if they had only just met because finally, finally someone cares about him. you watch him *fly*, in front of sonic, and only in front of sonic.

of course, good things can't last forever.

[sonic prime major spoilers territory, don't read unless you've watched all of s2]

this fox has been beaten down by the world around him, it should come as no surprise that when he found out what the full extent of what he could do with the shards is, that his first idea was to create the ideal world out of a wasteland just for him and sonic. only them. because sonic was the only one who showed him kindness. hell, he even remembered the palm trees sonic mentioned. the ideal world just for him and the hedgehog that insists that he's his friend.

and that's where their views collide.

because while nine wants what he never had, sonic wants what he lost.

and doesn't that just hurt? it's rejection. something that he's grown used to. because as much as sonic tries, he never saw nine more than just another alternate version of tails. all those words of his were for someone nine wasn't.

it's rejection, and it just confirms to nine what the world forced him to believe.

he's all on his own.

it's really no wonder he took control of the shards to create his own paradise.

(side note: i don't *fully* blame sonic for this either. while yes, it's primarily his fault, i feel like he's been dealing with the consequences plenty by now. he's just doing his best to fix things back to the way it was before. sonic may be fast, but even a few days isn't enough to process all of that for the world's fastest hedgehog.)

Not to kinda sorta infodump in your asks but

Thinking about… more animalistic traits. Mobians who hiss!! Who growl!!! Everyone gets super sleepy in the winter time. Mobians shedding their winter coats in the spring (RIP to mobians with white furniture). Fangs growing in!!! The cultural concept of mating for life?? Fuck yeah

I have seen that art before! I don't remember if I've reblogged it or not (I thought I had?), but I've seen it!

I love and respect when people decide to write/depict mobians as a single species with many variations, it's tons of fun to see where people go with that, but I personally think they're the most fascinating and engaging to figure out when you stick as close to 1-1 with normal animals as possible. You have... NO idea how enthusiastic I am about mobians exhibiting real-world aminal traits, both physically and behaviorally. I have a great many thoughts about it, and someday or another, I WILL post all of my thoughts.

I looooove thinking about the sounds they make. Sonic roughhousing with Tails until he goes from laughing to gekkering, Blaze yowling at the top of her lungs when she's terribly startled, most of the cast is capable of some kind of warning growl.

On fur and shedding, absolutely I love shedding and molting so much. I even have a mobian OC who molts in seasonal colors bc she's an arctic species. In the canon cast, Tails shouldn't be very fluffy--red foxes are incredibly variable, and we know he was born and raised in a tropical environment! Having tons and tons of floof is a temperate and arctic trait, he's gonna be too hot in Mystic Ruins! If you've seen Prime, Nine is actually what Tails' tails should look like given the climate.

Now, mating cycles of real-world animals compared to mobians is a very weird topic, because it gets into some really weird territory where some species roll with polygyny (one male to many females), others are monogamous and mate for life, some die after mating, plenty of animals leave only one parent to take care of the offspring, etc. and tons and tons of fascinating courtship displays... (And then there's actual mating cycles, heats, etc. and that tends to just get weird in a bad way in the context of headcanons about children's media.) Not to mention, there's canonical inter-species relationships and inter-species crushes!

Mobians drive me absolutely batty with how insanely interesting they can be if you're willing to really, really dig into it. Beyond skimming wikipedia and nicking whatever sounds like an entertaining idea, and into the truly bizarre, the intricate, the inter-connected parts of their biology in relation to the wider world!!

I like your interpretation of Sonic you've talked about on this blog. Do you have any other interpretations of Sonic characters you've thought of beside Sonic? Like Tails or Knuckles or Eggman?

I haven't thought about them very hard, not really. I mean, maybe I have, I dunno. But unlike where Sonic feels more identifiably "my" Sonic, like I made up a version of him that pulls from official sources but is generally closer to a headcanon (until Sonic Prime, anyway), for characters like Knuckles or Tails or Eggman I am more ready to accept certain official interpretations.

Like to me, the ideal Knuckles is sort of like he was in Sonic Adventure 1. Innocently ignorant, somebody who prefers isolation, who maybe doesn't have the greatest social skills, etc. I also really like how he's portrayed in Sonic Frontiers, where he and Sonic act like brotherly rivals.

Similarly, I think Tails was best in the original Sonic Adventure. It's clear he's doing his own things without Sonic, doing research and development on new ways to use the Chaos Emeralds. Even though a lot of his story arc in SA1 is about "coming of age", it was clearly more about proving that to himself, because he was clearly already totally functional outside of Sonic's shadow before they met back up again.

The ideal Eggman to me is Sonic Unleashed, where he straight up admits that fighting Sonic is sort of a game to him at this point. Orbot makes a suggestion that Eggman could very easily just destroy Sonic if he really wanted to, and Eggman replies "Yeah, but where's the fun in that?" Eggman's been beaten so much, he doesn't just want to win, he wants to make sure he can rub Sonic's face in it first. The prototype script for Sonic Forces kind of touches on this, too (Eggman was deliberately keeping Sonic alive in prison so he could break his spirit).

I could see Shadow as someone who would break off on his own and get as much distance from Sonic & co. as possible. He feels guilty for his past deeds, he wants to set things right (for the sake of Maria's wish), but he also wants to do it on his own terms. He doesn't want help. And I could see Sonic and friends not letting him do that, because they want to help him recover. So there's a bit of an adversarial tone there. ("We just want to help" "But I don't NEED help" etc.)

So Shadow wouldn't necessarily be a character you'd see a lot of but they'd always end up running in to him anyway and he'd never be happy about it. But, obviously, still willing to help, because that's who he's trying to be now.

I dunno what I'd specifically do with anyone else beyond that.

Spider-Man Read-Through 017: Let's get smashed (ASM 116-118)

So John Romita Sr. just died. A great artist. I don't need to tell you, by this point.

1973 is here! Now, as I said, I'm very familiar with the few upcoming years. But will I look at them differently? Hmm!!!

The issue recaps what happened last time, and it feels surreal to now see exactly what happened. It's pretty much how I imagined it, except slightly more complicated.

Richard Raleigh is back! Or rather, here. What's up with that?

Well, turns out issues 116-118 re-publish Spectacular Spider-Man Magazine #1 (that special in black and white!) but edit it to fit continuity. In the original print (of ish 116), Stan Lee explains that SSM#1 was published around an election year, and they felt like the new election year was apropos for a lil' lifting, handled script-wise by my baby Gerry Conway, and visuals-vise by John Romita Sr. naturally.

So let's read them!

Ah, Romita. Your art never disappointed.

Maybe it's my contemporary look, but this single panel on the right raises so many alarm bells it's hilarious. I've head that kind of words coming from my politicians. *sigh*

The GwenPeter drama continues, and with the recent realization that Romita worked on romances, it all makes a lot of sense.

It's very nice to see how much Romita's art improved (more perspectives! And the colors help him a lot too.

You know, as we get on to issue 117, I feel like Conway's writing is easier to understand for me, as-in, not difficult at all, whereas Stan's writing was often annoying to parse due to some expressions. You really see the difference. Of course, Stan wrote the original issue, but Conway pretty clearly rewrote pretty much everything.

We've got a new masked baddie, and he reminds me of when the Kingpin's son was the antagonist for a bit. I hope we get to see him and his mother again!

Back to the gentleman's club (with no George Stacy in sight, since he died), Norman is still interesting and Robbie continues to be the MVP.

The multiple references to Peter's ulcer make more sense now too! Forgot about that. Poor baby. (Honey you're about to live through the worst two years of your life, and I will be seated. With popcorn. Actually, I have a coke and crackers. Yes, it's not even noon yet. Who cares. I'm a freelancer. My schedule is random.

Robertson's digging into Raleigh makes him a prime target (as usual), so the Disruptor's about to attack him with the Smasher. But wait... Huh?

In the reader's letters, people are praising Gerry Conway and overall issue 113. Which. Yes. He gets the soap opera. He gets it!!!

In issue 118, Robertson tries his best against the Disruptor, and to be fair, his best is a whole lot. Of course, he isn't fit to fight him, but still!

As the final battle, rages on, those messages down there interspede, and it's a genius move. It wasn't present in the original and I've got to say, it's excellent. It gives pacing, foreboding, and foreshadows what's about to happen...

The Disruptor says "he won't run off with his tail between his legs like a jackal" and oh boy, did they know about the upcoming villain of the same name? It's a line present in the original, but I can't help but wonder...

Of course, the Disruptor was actually Raleigh all along (it couldn't be anybody else), which makes his behavior kind of wonky, but oh well.

This set of issues is fine, I love me some intrigue, and we get to see the supporting cast, but it lacked something. As to know what, exactly, I'm not sure.

In the letters, Bill Creighton complains that the supporting cast hasn't had much appearances recently (before the previous batch of issues) and Stan reassures him that Conway, as was already seen, is attached to showing more of them. He also teases a bigger part for Harry soon... and laughs maniacally. Muahaha.

The recent ask about Sanzu with a friend acting as a sibling for him got me thinking about how "Akashi Haruchiyo" came to be "Sanzu Haruchiyo" (aside from the "do your work discreetly by concealing your real identity" explanation, which you can infer from Senju's choice to go by as "Kawaragi Senju" as Brahman's leader). Sorry it took so long for me to reply to this, Anon!! And don't worry, you explained your theory really well, it makes full sense!!

Yeah, I agree with you, I'm also leaning towards the idea that Haruchiyo became 'Sanzu' as a rejection of his ties to the Akashi family (evident in his claim to Mucho that he's an only child) and to distance himself from them, as he seemed to hate how he was as an 'Akashi'. Contrast this to Senju, who adopted the 'Kawaragi' name to, as you said, conceal her identity for the purpose of being discreet. (Though, for Senju, I feel that it's also largely because she wanted to make a name for herself and avoid riding on Takeomi's coat tails. Given Takeomi's fame in his prime, people will likely dismiss her as 'the God of War's younger sister' if they are to see the 'Akashi' surname—especially because she's a girl.)

However, I'm not sure if I'd say that being 'Sanzu' is a 'coping mechanism', though it's mostly because I don't really think Wakui puts in that much defined psychological traits in his characters / writing (like he probably just wanted to say 'oh Haruchiyo decided to become Sanzu after this traumatic thing happened in his childhood' and that's it haha). I personally think that Haruchiyo's decision to become Sanzu was a very conscious one stemming from a disdain of being related to Takeomi/Senju, and something born out of his will rather than a reaction, if you get what I mean. He seems to be aware that he is still 'Akashi Haruchiyo' (because he still acknowledges his relationship with Senju), but just chooses / prefers to be 'Sanzu' because it is more liberating.

As for 'Sanzu' being an identity like Mikey, honestly I don't really have much thought on this because we've yet to really see much of their relationship, but yeah I'm also pretty sure that the 'smile' incident with Mikey birthed the Sanzu persona! Though I don't know if Sanzu wants to become (like) Mikey—so far, Sanzu seems to put him on a pedestal and appears to be totally set on serving Mikey. Like (this is a bad analogy) you know how people worship god but have no intentions of becoming god? Something like that haha.

Anon I feel ya! Sanzu is so intriguing and really one of the more unique / mysterious TR characters (with substance, unlike the Haitani's LMAO). I really do hope Wakui gives us at least a chapter from his POV! But I've wrongly predicted getting Haitani/Mocchi flashbacks and I'm BURNED; hope it isn't the same with Sanzu, though considering Sanzu's relevance to the plot I think we do have a good chance of getting his backstory! (Pretty disappointed with 249, ngl. We didn't even get to see the fights!!)

Movie Review: Cinderella (Spoilers)

Disclaimer: I am posting this review the day after the movie airs on Amazon Prime, so if you haven't yet seen it don't read on until you do.

General Reaction:

It is slightly weird to think of another movie studio taking on one of the classic fairy-tales that isn't Disney, because, as I am sure is the case for a large portion of the mainstream audience, Disney have almost claimed fairytale adaptations as their own.

However, as identified, Cinderella, is a fairy tale and one created long before Disney came about. As such, other studios are allowed to put across their own interpretation of these classic stories that we have seen a lot of times adapted at this point.

That being said, we have seen many different adaptations of Cinderella at this point from the classis Disney Animation version and it's live-action counterpart, to modern-day reworkings like A Cinderella Story of the mid-noughties starring Hilary Duff.

It's quite an easy story to tell and adapt to a variety of different settings, and what this 2021 retelling does with the story blends the old-fashioned with the modern. Does that mean it is set apart from the others? Well in my opinion yes and no.

While this is a Sony movie, it plays a lot like a Disney Channel Original Movie. From the comedy to the settings to the costuming and the music, it plays like the best of those types of movies. I'm talking the High School Musical franchise and the Descendants franchise. It is by no means bad or corny, but it isn't even on the level of the 2016 live-action Cinderella.

While that version was pretty much a straightforward live-action version of the original animated version, the style of the movie outweighed the substance.

Here however, there is a great blend of both style and substance. The story takes the classic elements of the original Cinderella fairy tale but tries to inject a modern and feministic twist that the recent live-action Beauty and the Beast tried to do.

In terms of whether this version of Cinderella stands out in the crowd of Cinderella movies, I would say it does. Not only is the titular character race-bent and the setting she is in seemingly plays into that, but the reworking of the Fairy Godmother as the Fab G as well as giving the Stepmother a more humanised backstory allows for a more compelling take on a classic.

Cast:

Because this is just the one all-in review I'm not going to do an in-depth character analysis and instead group the characters as who were my favourites, who did a passable job, who was bad and who were for some reason just there.

Favourites:

I have a top 3/4 favourite characters in this movie. Idina Menzel's Stepmother Vivian, Billy Porter's Fab G, Minnie Driver's Queen Beatrice and additionally Beverly Knight's Queen Tatiana.

Idina Menzel was always going to be fantastic in this movie, but to see her portray what is traditionally the villain character in the movie as a sympathetic character as part of the movie's feminist agenda was an interesting twist. No cat for a start, I don't know if Lucifer was a part of the original fairy tale but of course in the Disney adaptations Lady Tremaine is always accompanied by her faithful feline, but also the fact that her backstory parallels Ella's current story and the fact Vivian was so willing to have Ella reject her passion to do what is expected of her just as was forced on her was actually great motivation.

In truth I have only ever seen Billy Porter in one other thing aside from this movie and that was American Horror Story: Apocalypse. I have never seen Pose though I have heard good things, but from what I understand, Billy Porter only really has one speed. However, as the character's name states, that speed is fabulous. I loved Fab G in this movie, the fairy godmother is usually one of my favourite characters in the movie and every interpretation I have seen has brought something different and memorable. If this version of Cinderella is remembered for anything it will be for this very modernised take on the Fairy Godmother, not only gender-bending and race-bending a traditionally white female character, but with Porter choosing to make the character non-binary and that outfit speaks for itself, Fab G was simply a fabulous character.

In both Disney adaptations, I have never heard mention or reference to Prince Charming having a living mother...or a dead one for that matter. So to not only have the Queen being in a chunk of this movie, but also having her own story branch tying into the feminist agenda running through the movie and being portrayed by Minnie Driver, I was in love with this character.

Pretty much similar to the Fab G, if you've seen Beverly Knight's one second in the trailers you've pretty much seen her in the movie. She contributes to Ella's story in the movie and only appears in the latter half of the movie in 2 maybe 3 scenes but she makes an impact because she's Beverly Knight. My only gripe with her is she does not sing in the movie, you have Beverly Knight with not even a solo in a group number?

Passable:

Unfortunately the star of the movie Camilla Cabello is just passable in this movie as Cinderella. She does have some humour about her and her singing is great despite maybe being autotuned because I know how she can sing, but she doesn't feel like Cinderella to me, it actually feels more like a version of what Emma Watson was doing with Belle in the live-action Beauty and the Beast rather than Cinderella but at least she tried.

As for Nicholas Galitzine, he's definitely more engaging as a modern-day Prince Charming, Robert is definitely more engaging a character than Ella unfortunately, which to be fair is still good as the 2015 Cinderella is the only other adaptation to really make the Prince interesting, but I can't quite put my finger on exactly which movie it is but there is another movie I have seen where the Prince Regent doesn't want to be king but the Princess does and has to fight for her right to be it...that's pretty much this story for them.

Also Pierce Brosnan as the King, despite jokingly singing towards the end, did a great job at being the archetype of old-fashioned values with his on-screen wife Minnie Driver's queen pushing him into a modern-day thinking.

Bad:

As for who's bad, I have to say it pains but the British comic relief characters really let the side down in this movie.

In the three mice defence, Romesh Ranganathan and James Acaster are somewhat funny but unnecessary. James Corden however is abismal in this movie. I get he produces it, but particularly after Cats I do not understand 1) Why he'd want to portray another CG animal or 2) Ever think that one shot of him changing back from human to mouse with his head on a mouse body was funny...it was terrifying.

Also this movie is supposedly a family-audience movie...so why include a crass joke of Corden's character talking about peeing out of his front tail?

Additionally to the three mice, Rob Beckett has a surprising role in this movie as a potential suitor for Vivian's daughters, but he simply portrays such a creepy, cringe-worthy character it's almost uncomfortable to watch.

New Additions:

So as well as the two queens and the British comic relief there is also the addition of Princess Gwen to the movie who is the sister of the Prince and the one who wants to be ruler. It's kind of the same story as Jasmine's in the live-action Aladdin as wanting to be Sultan but being a woman isn't taken seriously, however here it is treated more comedically as every time there is a serious moment with the King trying to force Robert to grow up and be King, she always tries to interject with "Would this be a bad time to tell you about an actual real reason why I would be a good ruler" and they make sense but she's always dismissed until the very end.

Then there's a town crier, who is also inserted as a musical number while he's reading his proclamations but as a rap. Honestly I don't know Doc Brown as an artist but I did happen to enjoy what he contributed.

Music:

Which brings us on nicely to the music of the movie as this is a musical and I usually break down the songs. Again this time I will be doing groupings of best to worse.

Honestly my favourite number is probably "Shining Star" mostly performed by Billy Porter with verses by Camilla Cabello and, unfortunately, James Corden.

I also enjoyed the two original songs of the movie, "Million to One" which is Cabello's "I Want" song of the movie and used a lot through the movie, and then also "Dream Girl" which is Idina's main other song but also sung by basically the women of the movie, it's Idina Menzel if you don't give her an original song it's an insult.

Idina's other song is a cover of "Material Girl" and honestly it is a lot of fun, Nicholas Galitzine's rendition of "Somebody to Love" was also fun and surprising as I did not think this guy could sing that well.

The group numbers were fun and well choreographed but they are also somewhat forgettable. The song at the ball of "Whatta Man/Seven Nation Army" was probably the most memorable but still just mediocre.

Recommendation:

So with all that said, would I recommend watching Sony's Cinderella? Honestly I would say it is worth at least one viewing, and I do recommend watching all the way through just to get the full experience. I do think it will do better as a streaming movie than it would have done as a theatrical release, but I cannot pinpoint a market for this movie.

I don't think this will go down as one of the great adaptations, but there are moments and aspects of the movie that sets it apart from the crowd.

Overall I rate this movie a 7/10, it's not as fantastic as I feel the trailers were making it out to be, but having seen the movie twice there are definitely elements of the movie I looked forward to watching the second time around.

Sonine Prime ... Part 1

Hi, everyone and welcome to Sonine Prime! The part of the show when I come out and talk about Sonine (and a bit of Sontails) in Sonic Prime!

And now, a bit of background before I beginㅤ

I have only recently become a Sonic fan. I played a few games when I was younger, watched the first 3 tv shows all the way through, watched a bit of the Sonic Boom tv show, and I bought Sonic Frontiers at release. But, strangely enough, it was Sonic Prime that got me obsessed with this franchise.

And it was, frankly, more queer than I had expected it to be.

Now, right off the bat

S1 Episode 1.

Now, I know this is supposed to mostly be about Sonine, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention the little scene towards the beginning where Sonic has a little moment with each of his friends. For the record, I think that Sonic Prime leaves it open so that you can interpret Sonic as having crushes on/having some sort of not strictly friends deal with most of his friends (in this case, I am at least referring to Knuckles, Tails, and Amy) and his rival (Shadow).

Sonic's interaction with Tails is Tails catching him to save him, and Sonic being thankful, Sonic gives Rouge a wave and thanks her when she saves him (to which she says "Don't mention it. Literally"), Sonic asks Knuckles if he's doing okay and Knuckles says "The only thing that flusters me is when you're late, Sonic" (interesting choice of words there), and then of course Amy asking where Sonic's been, and Sonic leaning over the robot to say he got sidetracked.

Now, this is an image of that scene with Amy, one of many I have seen people show off as S0namy proof. And I will say now that this look will come back later.

Oh, and that this looks just a little familiar, doesn't it?

It's the S2 scene where Sonic is talking to Nine through the Eggforcer and needs to be talked out of saving him asap

Now, back to the episode.

While this doesn't mean much yet, just before we get to Sonic shattering the Paradox Prism, he gets to fight with Tails again, who warns him to be careful while Sonic brushes him off. Then it switches to Amy, who says "if eggman wants it, it can't be good".

Tally 1 for the "Tails and Amy get the last word" category. Why does this category matter? Well...just the sheer amount of times it pairs them up specifically for parallel reasons. Only you can decide what it means for you.

Then, after our very first (of many) Sonic shattering the prism scenes, we watch Sonic float unconsciously through the space in between the shatterspaces, as apparitions of his friends and Robotnik speak. Everyone gives their oneliners that *will* come up again, and then before Sonic enters New Yolk, three people speak a second time.

These three are Amy, Tails, and Eggman.

And out of the three, only Amy and Tails' apparitions are actually shown onscreen when they get a second word in (with phrases we don't see later with the reveal of Ghost Hill's existence).

Amy: Hey. I may be the one who can bring everyone together, but there's only one hedgehog they'll follow into battle.

Tails: Heh heh. I don't need an army when I've got a friend like you Sonic.

And not only do they get a second word, but a third word!

Amy: We'd follow you anywhere, Sonic!

Tails: Nothing could break our friendship, Sonic.

Tails and Amy get the last word: II

And while this would be a topic for a different essay that would go into parallels like these, I just also think it very interesting that Amy's lines are more focused on Amy assuring Sonic how everyone feels about him, while all of Tails apparition's lines (all 3) are about his bond with Sonic.

"As long as I'm around, you'll always have a wingman"

...

"Nothing could break our friendship, Sonic"

"I don't need an army when I've got a friend like you, Sonic"

...

Barely 4 minutes into episode 1. Food for thought.

Now we enter the shatterverse.

Sonic spends a good disoriented minute getting knocked around in New Yolk, and the first names he calls are Tails, then Amy

"Tails? Amy? ...Heck I'll even take Knuckles at this point."

Tails and Amy being singled out specifically: III

After a short moment of trying to figure out where he is, and also finding Big and Froggy, Sonic ends up running from the Eggforcers, after which he realizes that New Yolk *is* Green Hill.

"The loop de loop. Hedgehog's Pass! And that should be Tails's Lab! Oh, Tails...what happened?"

Aside from when he found Big + Froggy, and when he mentioned Tails, Amy, and Knuckles, Sonic has not yet moved to figure out what happened to his friends. But he *does* specifically mention *only* Tails in his "What happened here" set of lines, which leads us to a flashback.

Now, again, I'm going to try not to make this too much about other ships when I'm making this for Sonine, but I think this bit of the flashback is important. And I think the writers' choice specifically to have Eggman say something nasty about Tails and only Tails to get Sonic riled up.

"You can mess with me Eggman, but nobody messes with my best friend!"

Most of this fight is spent with Sonic fighting the Eggcrusher in his normal "Fight Eggman and throw insults back and forth attitude". Almost no matter what Eggman says to him, it does not get Sonic riled up to attack him in the way he is baiting him to.

The writers could have chose any friend of Sonic’s or multiple for Eggman to insult, leading Sonic to become riled up to destroy him and fall right into that trap. Sonic's line very easily here could have been "You can mess with me, Eggman, but nobody messes with my friends!" And this would not at all seem abnormal, because this is Sonic, and because earlier in the episode Sonic monologued about how home is where your friends are.

And yet...it's Eggman calling Tails an ugly two tailed mutant fox that gets Sonic to block out everything else to zero in on hitting Eggman hard for what he'd said. Not "nobody messes with my friends" but "nobody messes with my best friend"

This show is already emphasizing how Big, Froggy, Amy, Tails, Rouge, and Knuckles are all his friends, but Tails is special, because they're best friends, huh?

And not to mention the parallel's between Tails' "Sonic, noooo!" before Sonic pounds the Eggcrusher inro the ground, creating a shockwave, and his "Sonic, wait!" before Sonic shatters the Paradox Prism, also causing a shockwave. ....Or the fact that Tails gets a lot of the spotlight in this flashback, from the audience getting to see a lot of his thoughts/what he was doing while Sonic was fighting the Eggcrusher, or Sonic coming into the lab to apologize and try to make up with him, or–

But I digress.

Post flashback, Sonic has the full realization that New Yolk is Green Hill, and remembers the paradox prism. His first thought after this?

"I gotta find Tails"

Now, you may be thinking. "Tumblr user hadesknockedupintheunderworld. That doesn't mean anything. Maybe he's looking for Tails just to make sure he's okay, or because he trusts that Tails can help him figure out/understand exactly what's happening here"

And to that I say that I am the last person who's going to argue that this means Sonic doesn’t care about his other friends or that this is inherently romantic. I just think it's interesting the focus that Tails is getting in episode 1 alone, and that after remembering more of what happened his first thought is to search for him specifically. And he doesn’t stray from this path either! He makes mention of his goal to find Tails before fighting Dr. Babble for the first time, and again when he decides to escape Babble in part because of his refusal to fight kids and in other part to get back on track to finding Tails.

Anddd about 22 minutes in, just after following him through the underground transport and believing him to be Tails, we meet the second star of today's show!!

Wow Sonic really does keep making that face doesn't he?

Now, at first I was going to break this first meeting down but there was just *much* too much to comment on in a way that would do justice to the scene itself. As such, I'm planning to insert a video of the scene and break it down from there.

and to actually further expand my thoughts on sonic this year, alot of it just. really feels like sega is actually listening to their fans and delivering us sonic stuff that we really asked for. before i go into why, keep in mind. i don't trust sega at all. hell, most sonic fans for that matter hate sega. they've done shitty practices as a company (a most recent example of this would be their near hypocritical stances on nfts, going from "we wont make nfts if fans don't like them" one week to the next, trademarking "sega nfts"), and they listen to their fans the same way modern paper mario writers and designers listens to their fans

but with all that said, i think this will be the first year of sonic media where. sega went beyond surface levels comments of "give us classic sonic games" or "give us dark sonic games" and actually went into what we really wanted as a community. we didn't just want a good sonic game, we wanted a sonic movie that felt more like sonic than the first one, we wanted a new tv show (mainly to have lore from the actual comics rather than a new continuity), and i think. sega actually listened.

sonic 2 looks more exciting, as it seems the focus will be on sonic & tails in this one, so there will be more deepcut sonic references here than. hill top zone. green hill as the name of a town. the mushroom planet being a reference to "mushroom hill zone" and kind of another sarcastic dig at mario. the characterizations of the sonic characters look pretty solid so far, jim carrey returning as dr eggman will be very delightful and will obviously be another highlight of the movie. we'll finally get talks about the emeralds (in particular, the master emerald) and its just. sonic 2 already seems like a film that'll be beyond yards better than sonic 1 and more of a sonic film than the actual sonic film we got a couple years ago

we don't know much about sonic prime right now, but it's just exciting that we're getting a new sonic cartoon that'll be something new and separate from the sonic continuity at far. who knows if it'll be good or bad, but either way, i'm looking forward to it.

and sonic frontiers, by far, has to be the most excited i've been for a sonic game since mania & forces. it's the one game that feels like sega has actually been listening to their fans and delivering us something new, bold and different. sonic frontiers will be an open world game, taking inspiration from breath of the wild. the games story and writing will be penned by ian flynn, aka the one writer that was able to keep this franchise afloat through the comics and like. the only sonic writer who gets sonic. for such a long while since sonic 06, dr eggman won't be the main threat. and speaking of which, the first trailer itself is already giving off a lot of vibes that. it won't be like the nostalgia baiting sonic games of the 2010s, but something more reminiscent to the 2000s era of sonic games. primarily, the more controversal ones that ruined the franchise's popularity then, but are still loved and accepted by various sonic fans. stuff like sonic 06, the secret rings and the black knight. and seeing how it's written by ian flynn, yea, i absolutely get it!!! there's just a lot in this game that feels right, and it's not even out yet. we don't even know what the gameplay will be like, how the rest of the cast past sonic & eggman will sound like (since these are new VAs), who will even be in this game, how the story will be like past its synopsis, like. im so excited for sonic frontiers, and i'm just so excited to be a sonic fan this year. i'm already looking forward to alot this year, but i got a feeling i'll particularly be more annoying about sonic.
