My roommate and friend, Clara asked as she helped me get every last piece of clothing out of my closet.

"I already told you, my classmate from Italian literature class, Veronica, was invited to the party thanks to her Youtube channel, and since her best friend canceled, she thought of inviting me" I said as I began to connect the iron for the hair

"Wow, who do you think you know?"

"I don't know, I might know Henry Cavill himself" I joked, knowing that he would not be present at the party.

“Girl, never say never” She slapped my arm playfully “What do you think of these pants and this shirt with the back uncovered? It looks party-worthy, it's sexy and elegant. It's an 'I'm a bitch, but I'm an expensive bitch '”

We both laughed, but, she was somewhat right, it was worthy of a party the magnitude of tonight's.

"Clara, you are magnificent"

To say that it was a party full of celebrities was an understatement for the amount of famous people that were in that place. Figures like Jennifer Aniston, Chris Evans and even Madonna were present at the party, enjoying a cocktail.

"Wow, when you said famous, I didn't think it would be so many famous" I joked with Veronica

“I know, I didn't expect this quality either” she returned the joke, suddenly someone approached her and began to speak in her ear until she walked away “hey, I have to go interview the person who invited us; I hope I won't be long"

"Do not worry it's alright"

"Don't get lost" she said goodbye with a wink and a squeeze to my right arm

"No" I returned the smile seeing how he began to walk away "I'll stay here"

My gaze began to travel all around me, feeling a little self-conscious about the people, the noise and the great amount of talent that surrounded me, making me feel small, like a little ant.

Trying to get that feeling out of my body, I decided to walk to the small bar and ask the bartender for a drink.

After sitting for a long time, taking drink after drink, I felt like a body collided with my back.

"Forgiveness"

I turned my head just to see that famous blonde hair, green eyes and that big smile.

Holy crap, Scarlett Johansson had bumped into me!

She ordered a drink, but surely she felt my gaze on her body, so she returned the gaze, causing me to look away and bow my head.

"I've never met you before, are you new to the guild?"

I turned my head, just to confirm that her question was directed at me.

"No, they invited me" I saw how her look changed, so I hastened to answer again "but don't worry, I'm not here in fan mode. Just… you know, I coming to party”

"Well, thank goodness" she laughed, placing a hand on my bare shoulder. "Well…"

"Y/N, my name is Y/N."

"Well, Y/N, what's a girl like you doing here?"

“I just came to accompany a classmate from the university…”

"University? What are you studying?"

"Literature"

“That sounds interesting… where do you study?”

"Sorry, I don't mean to sound rude, but why would an Oscar-nominated actress like you take an interest in the life of a college girl?"

She took the glass that had been brought to her and toasted my drink, forgotten on the bar.

"I'm just… interested in the life of a pretty girl"

The conversation was only going up, it didn't even seem like she was talking to one of the biggest stars on the planet. We were just two women having a light flirt as we got to know each other more and more. Until, little by little, the room became more and more crowded, making the conversation more difficult to carry.

"Damn, people are starting to tire me out" Scarlett began to complain, as she took the last sip of her drink "Do you want to get out of here?" she ask

"Where?"

"I know a place where we can have fun" she took my right hand, forcing me to get up from my seat and guiding me to the exit of the place.

Taking me on a late night adventure.

Scarlett took me on an express tour of New York City, she knew I hadn't had the chance to meet her in the few days of my stay, so she showed me everything there was to see. I took some photos in Times Square, we went through the art museum, we bothered a guard at the Empire State and I even took some of the statue of liberty. When I least wanted to realize it, Scarlett had brought me to the door of what looked like a school.

"What are we doing here?" I asked, watching as she brushed aside the vines to reveal a hole through which we could pass.

"Come, trust me"

And even so, without knowing her at all, beyond a public figure, still, I trusted her.

I got into the school and let her guide me to the pool and watching how she began to undress.

"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" I started laughing at the strange situation I was getting myself into.

"Do you want to swim?" When she was in her underwear, she quickly got into the pool, laughing and swimming until she was close to me again. "Did you know that I studied here?"

“Really?” I asked as I began to remove my pants "Turn around, I don't have a bra"

"If you want you can wear my shirt"

I took off my own blouse to put on Scarlett's and get into the pool. We both started playing and swimming.

When I least wanted to realize it, Scarlett's lips were on mine, in a heated kissing session, but with her hands holding my cheeks, trying not to bother me. She was just trying to be gentle with me, with soft but constant kisses; until the noise of my phone interrupted us. I quickly got out of the pool and answered the phone.

"Hello?"

"Where are you?" asked Veronica

"Damn, I left the place, but I'm coming back now"

"I'll wait for you. You have 20 minutes to arrive”

"It's fine"

and hung up

"I have to go" I said as I began to dry myself and put on my own clothes.

Without realizing it, Scarlett got out of the pool and hugged my hips from behind.

"When I could see you?"

"You have my phone" I laughed "Just dial me and you could send a private plane for me" I joked with her, causing her tender laughter

"Maybe I will." she kissed my cheek.

"See you then" I kissed her lips.

"See you"

ParaSenses Update

Hi everyone! We wanted to give you a little update on how the comic is moving forward, along with our work progress! We have a few notes to give for those of you who are interested, and how we plan to keep going in the future.

Art Style

First of all we do want to say that we have found a new work flow that works a lot faster for the both of us! We were struggling in our beginnings to find a consistent art style (that some might have noticed between chapter 1.1 and chapter 1.3) that we do believe we have fully fixed. With this new found style, we are able to work between panels a lot faster.

Something we always wanted was to have our own backgrounds drawn, and our characters shaded. This will take more time to do, but we hope you all understand this artistic decision we took. We did cut corners on any heavy shading to cut back on time, but we want to give the best quality possible.

Chapter Length

The chapters have all been pre-written in advance, and we have realised just how terribly long these have ended up being. However, we do not want to cut them up to the point of releasing five to six panels a week just to push out content.

We will continue to cut our chapters in a few pieces as we have previously done (chapter 2.1, chapter 2.2, chapter 2.3, etc...) but make sure one chapter is fully done to release it ever two weeks. This will give us time to work on the next few chapters, and Patreon content. We still want to release long chapters for people to enjoy even if the time is more distanced, than releasing them in smaller increments.

Character Design

Small changes that will be done for the characters for chapter 2 is their color scheme. A small modification has been done to adjust their tone:

Blair

Blair's colors for his clothes were too clashing with his skin and face. Not only that, the line art was hard to see on his gloves, and we felt that the red was too sharp. We made small modifications on his clothing colors-

-for something much softer!

Xephan

We found a different kind of problem for Xephan. His color schemes completely blends together; his gloves are almost the same color as his hair, his pants are the same tone as his coat... It makes him extremely difficult to color (Avery's note: And I'm the one coloring him. So I remade his color palette.) Unfortunately, I didn't keep a before picture, but here's Xephan in the comic beforehand.

He's blending a whole lot together. I made some very light rearrangement so his glove at least doesn't disappear if it gets in the same shot of his hair.

It's faint, but we didn't want to make something too apparent. HOWEVER. This isn't the last change Xephan will go through. His design is overly complex, and takes too much time to do (Avery's note: Not only that, half the time I receive the line art to color and shade, Xephan is missing at least an element or two.) And so, after the first mission these two will go on, we will reduce the amount of clutter he has on him so it at least doesn't feel out of the blue.

Time Frame

Finally, when it comes down to time before the release of our chapters, we still need more time to work. Life has been hectic on our side, but we've been working everyday to make this happen, and we wanted to show you guys that this isn't a project that's been discarded. We are still working day and night to make it happen. We also have a small animatic coming up in the meantime to thank you for your patience. HOW TO: Make an Animated Sound Wave Overlay

In this tutorial, I’ll show you a quick and easy way to get this animated sound wave effect that’s unique to any song you choose! (You can check out a similar effect in my Obi-Wan Kenobi and Miles Morales gifsets too.) Disclaimer: This tutorial assumes you have a basic understanding of gif-making in Photoshop.

PHASE 1: Make Sound Waves Using VEED.IO

You can do this using several methods like downloading sound wave videos on YouTube and making them into gifs (which I’ve done before too!). But I’m going to show you how to make sound waves specific to the song of your choice using a free site called VEED.IO

1.1 – Upload a YouTube link of your song to VEED.IO Open VEED.IO and click Choose Video! Try to find a studio recording if you can, instead of a clip of the film/tv scene which might have distracting background audio that could influence the sound waves.

UPDATE 09/17/23: At the time of writing this tutorial, VEED.IO allowed you to upload a YouTube link directly. However, I’ve been made aware that this doesn’t always work with the new version of VEED.IO. As an alternative, you can instead download the YouTube video using any video downloader and use the “Upload a File” method instead!

1.2 – Make the video a black screen. If the video you used isn’t already fully black, click on your media in the timeline and toggle over to the Adjust tab. Pull the Brightness slider all the way down to -100 until the screen is completely black. This black background is key to getting a seamless blend on your gif later!

1.3 – Insert sound waves. Click Elements in the left sidebar and navigate to Sound Waves. Select any sound wave design you prefer! I like the vertical, rounded orange bars. Don’t worry about the color when you choose, we’re going to change it to white later!

1.4 – Trim your audio clip. It’ll depend on the amount of frames in your gif, but you shouldn’t need more than 10 seconds of your song. You can choose to trim based on the scene of your gif, the lyrics you’re going to type on the gif, or even just choose a section where the music goes wild and the sound waves move a lot. In this Max gif, I took a clip toward the end where the lyrics are: “I’d be running up that road, running up that hill, with no problems” because it matched the main clip I giffed. Use the white parallel lines to drag the clip where you want it to start and end:

1.5 – Adjust the audio decibel controls. (Disclaimer: As with most things, I know almost nothing about what I’m doing here. 🤡) I just know that I don’t want the bars of my sound wave to be clipped like they are below, so I have to change the decibel range so the loudest part of my audio doesn’t go “outside the lines.”

I changed my minimum to -100 and my maximum to 25:

1.6 – Make your sound wave white. Still in the Edit Sound Wave window, change the color of the bars to white. It doesn’t matter what color you want your sound wave to be in your final gif — we’ll change it later! White is the best base for any color, especially if you want the gradient/exclusion effect in the overlay.

1.7 – Resize the sound wave to your liking. Use the corner sliders to enlarge the sound waves. I always prefer making a big gif smaller than trying to make a small gif bigger (and grappling with a low quality image). So I like to resize my sound wave as big as possible, cutting out any bars that don’t move so I can have a high-quality animation in the end. :)

1.8 – Export as a gif. One of the most convenient things about VEED.IO is that you can export the sound wave as a GIF! So you don’t have to screencap it yourself. Click the export button in the top right corner, select Export Video, and then download it as a GIF.

And here’s the sound wave gif I got:

Don’t worry about the watermark, we’ll take care of that in Phase 2. :)

PHASE 2: Overlay Sound Waves On Your Gif

Note: I’ll be working in Video Timeline for the most part of this section! If you want to see my process in Video Timeline, here’s my step-by-step gif-making tutorial.

2.1 – Make your base gif. This is all up to you and your style! I like to make my sound wave gifs color-focused and I think blending adds a nice touch. Also, my gif is 540x540px. Now, one of the most important things to remember is this: make sure your frame delay starts out at 0.05 seconds, even if you work in Video Timeline like me. This is crucial to make sure you don’t get duplicate frames when adding the sound wave gif. 2.2 – Import your sound wave gif. Create a new file by opening the gif you exported from VEED.IO. Change the gif’s frame delay to 0.05. This is to match the base gif so that when you convert to Timeline, you don’t get duplicate frames! (Note: I also deleted the first frame of mine because all of the waves weren’t moving.) 2.3 – Resize the VEED.IO gif and convert to Video Timeline. For my gif, I resized the sound waves to 505px width and then I used the Sharper action in this action pack to convert to Video Timeline. (You can read more about how I use these actions in the gif tutorial I linked above!) You can also remove the sharpen filters if you feel you don’t need them! 2.4 – Hide the watermark. Create a layer on top of the gif layer and use the Marquee tool to make a box around the watermark. Use the Paint Bucket tool to fill that box with black so the watermark disappears.

Select both layers (the black box layer and your gif layer), right-click, and select Convert to Smart Object to merge the layers together.

2.5 – Drag/duplicate the sound wave gif over to your base gif. Either click and drag the sound wave layer into the tab with your base gif OR right-click the layer, select Duplicate Layer, and choose the document you want to paste the gif to! Make sure the sound wave layer is above your base gif! 2.6 – *OPTIONAL* Create a music player overlay. This is just a style I came up with because I’m currently obsessed with rounded shapes. But you don’t need to have the semi-circle music player for the sound waves! I just like how it looks. For my design, I just made a white ellipse, created my own shapes for the play and skip buttons and masked them out, set the blending mode to difference, and added a gradient overlay.

I won’t go into my design in a lot of detail here because this is a style choice that’ll be unique to how you want your gifs to look. Plus, this is just a tutorial on how to make animated sound waves. But if you have specific questions about my gif style for these kinds of sets, feel free to ask me at my main @sith-maul :)

2.7 – Set the blend modes. Put your sound wave gif in a folder and set the folder’s blend mode to Exclusion. Put that folder inside another folder, and set this folder’s blend mode to Pass Through (it should do this by default). Here’s a screenshot that hopefully explains this clearer:

Now, your sound waves should have gone from looking like this:

You can totally stop here if you like this look! But I want my sound waves’ color to match the rest of my gif, so... 2.8 – Add a gradient map. Within the sound wave gif folder (the one set to Exclusion), add a Gradient Map layer above the sound wave gif:

I recommend going for a Black to Color gradient because the black will help the background of the sound waves stay dark and fully blended with the rest of your gif. I went with this Black to Red gradient:

Now my sound wave gif looks like this:

But I don’t like how there’s now some cyan peeking through where the bars touch the lighter gray parts of my gif. So, let’s add one more adjustment layer. 2.9 – Add a Hue/Saturation layer. In the outer folder (the one set to Pass Through), add a Hue/Saturation layer so it’s above the other Exclusion folder:

Decide what color you want to get rid of (in my case, cyan), go to that color channel, and adjust the hue slider until that color matches your main color as best as possible!

PHASE 3: Export Your Gif!

As always, when you convert your gif back to frames, do a quick double-check that you didn’t end up with any duplicate frames before saving your gif. Again, you can read more about how I do these steps in my gif tutorial here. Finally, with just a little extra nudging layers around, my gif looks like this now:

Of course, for my actual gif, I created a music player design — so I decided to only use the upper half of my sound waves to fit inside the half circle. I’m sure you know how I did this already, but in case you don’t, just move the sound wave gif down the canvas to your liking until only half of the waves are visible! I like using this method where my sound wave gif is under a gradient overlay because of how dark it makes the sound wave bars and how I don’t have to get rid of any cyan colors:

hey y’all! in this series we’ll be covering major soft/positive aspects (conjunctions, sextiles, and trines) to pedro’s saturn. he doesn’t have any minor soft aspects to his saturn, but minor challenging aspects to his saturn (semi-squares/sesquiquadrates and semi-sextiles/inconjunctions) will be covered in an upcoming series, as well as the rest of the major and minor aspects to the rest of his planets, and asteroids in his chart! i also want to note that when it comes to these aspects, they have to be examined through the lens of the entire chart, as they’re influenced by a myriad of factors within it.

saturn trine pallas (within 1.1°)

in this aspect, the planetary bodies are harmonious and their energies are naturally and positively expressed. saturn is representative of long-term goals, how we approach those goals, and more specifically the restriction and difficulty we face in meeting these goals. most often you’ll hear saturn referred to as the “teacher” or the “father” of the planetary bodies, it is the “bar” you set for yourself. in astrology, pallas is representative of creative intelligence, the healing arts, crafts, and the protection of human rights. it shows how we intertwine our intuition and intellect to solve problems, specifically in our careers. in contrast to mars, pallas represents our approach to conflict from a tactful, clever, and resourceful point of view.

these natives have a strong level of discipline, paired with an intuitive sense of direction that works to their advantage. the saturnian influence of this aspect provides structure that works alongside them in achieving their goals rather than against. others may view them as immovable or stuck in their ways at times, as they can be meticulous in their approach to their day to day lives. while they may have a reputation for being stubborn, these natives perceive it as simply sticking to the process that works for them.

this aspect is usually indicative of being able to make a living from one’s creative pursuits. while these individuals can still face the same obstacles as everyone else in working towards their goals, they benefit from having a level of insight that helps them navigate through these struggles more smoothly. their skills aid them in working through the difficulties they face on their path to success, as they have the innate ability to be both pragmatic and innovative in reaching their long-term goals. they're at their best when they can balance their objective, more “sensible” ideals alongside their desire to approach things from their more intuitive, “gut feelings.”

the signs the celestial bodies are in are also of significance, in pedro’s case, his saturn is in cancer, while his pallas is in pisces. saturn is considered in detriment in cancer, meaning the planet struggles to express its innate nature and qualities through this placement. like i mentioned in the sun square saturn post, those with saturn in cancer may be avoidant of their own emotions, of the negative experiences in their youth, or of their domestic lives, and may have a tendency to overwork as a means to compensate for their insecurities. with pallas in pisces, they’re spiritually inclined and driven by intuition in the face of conflict, and tend to be innately creative, empathetic individuals.

in the context of this aspect, this can be indicative of having a hard working, compassionate nature. they may be skilled artists, and could find it easier than others to succeed in their creative endeavors. they may also find themselves drawn towards humanitarian work, and feel innately protective of vulnerable, marginalized groups or people. while they typically embrace and commend individuality in others, they may struggle in their own self-expression and find difficulties in accepting their own identity.

ultimately, this aspect provides a profound, analytical nature that they can use not only to advance their own careers and lives, but the well being of others. this can be indicative of someone who would excel in teaching, or may be drawn to coaching or mentorship of some kind, as they have a valuable perspective that can be used for the betterment of those around them. they prioritize stability, and work towards having a clear sense of direction in their lives.

the adventure's of puss in boots

1.1 9 years old, tv show, but not bad in animation quality (at least from the . definitely themes that the last wish touch on as well (of course that'll be the strongest point of comparison). love that the fight in episode 1 ends with a massive bluff "i can't defeat all of you, but i can defeat one. so which one of you will die?"

1.2 travel through different horrific lands. "yes, my friend, this is going to suck". the kingdom of darkness: just a dark screen a noises of people stumbling, and then doing it multiple times. the humour is spot on. that's a damn cool sphinx design, and telling us something about the character while not being overly obvious while in 3d show based on a movie? now that's surprising. sad that she's not in the next one, probably never to return, which makes the quality of design even more surprising.

1.3 you know, it takes some skill to make a funny "i hate my wife" joke, but they pulled it of. "i can never say no to a woman" "please pay your bar tab" "no" have i pointed out that this show nails the humour yet? puss vs ninja's? funny. but apparently not enough. puss vs teenage overly buff ninja pigs? now we're talking. also this show loves being dark in it's humour. how how the mean lady is apparently often crying. i wonder if that'll ever get depth, or is ever mentioned again instead of just being one dark joke.

1.4 "what's it like inside your head?" "wet and bloody".... i mean you're not wrong. at this point i'm just trying to convince people to watch the show because the humour is great. "it's not scary, it's just a bag stuffed with old dolls' heads" so many blink and you'll miss it jokes. why does dismemberment follow me everywhere? seriously what the fuck is up with that? why is it suddenly everywhere? at least it's clean and well cared for. this old guy be horny, in a kidshow. how is this a 2015 show? "you are crazy. but this is not new information" "nope". also recurring villain maybe?

1.5 standard episode: life here is too boring and an interesting old friend comes to steal the hero, but turns out to be a villain. will they play it straight (probably, he's designed as a villain), or will they do something more interesting. way too deep a thought for a short scene: so the orphanage is putting on a fake adventure, the costunes are brought out, and the buys very shortly argue over who gets to be a princess, until it's revealed that everyone who wants to can be a princess. here's what makes it so interesting: there is no joke outside of "the intrinsic funniness of buys wanting to be princesses". now while this could of course be setup for transphobic jokes later this honestly feels like it's just scene setting, just quaint town life, and the opposite of transphobic. i'm sure we won't see a trans character in this show (probably the closest being a queer coded villain) but this is nice. a simple message that everyone gets to be a princess if they want. again very cool monster design. like i want to steal this for my dnd game good. kind of a giant geko with a huge mouth and a lure like some fish have but with a fake pretty lady looking thing instead. my point of comparison is the kong-fu panda tv show which has the issue that it was extremely limited to always using the same assets. this show keeps bringing out amazing new designs every episode so far. also the message is damn strong. also neat that the standard plot was only really plot setup, it's never actually part of the plot, it never really comes into play. and for a boring plot now following up can be the best thing. the joke is that everyone wanted to be a princes. nothing about gender, just everyone wanted to be the same thing, nice. seriously, how come i never heard anything of this show? 2015. i'm pretty sure i watched some cartoons in 2015. did it never make it's way on dutch tv? i mean i've also never seen anyone talk about it online, something i think i'll have to correct at some point.

1.6 softpaws? nope, just a black cat. also the return of the sphinx which makes me happy. interesting that we get the more visually interesting sphinx sister first. so i've been watching a lot of TBSkyen and now want to kind of do a visual interpretation video like he often does on these two sisters. how the firsts inks and piercings make her read kind of Egyptian, alongside the naked cat stylings, while also indicating individuality and complexity, and how the lack of those in her sister suggests that she's simpler, which is true. one tells riddles, the other just tries to kill you. fuck why is this show so full of great dnd ideas. many magical fountains, each with different effects, like reverse gravity, talking backwards, and needing to say a word to undo it, which is hard with talking backwards, or induces fall damage after falling upwards for a while. fuck it, list time: fountain of invisible spiders, fountain of nausea, fountain of fire, fountain of itchy feet, just a regular fountain.

1.7 this serious continues to confuse me in a positive way in not making transphobic jokes. girly scream from the cowardly mayor? ok, that's prime setup right? sure, but they don't make the joke, it's just a scream that doesn't match the character design, but that's part of the general joke of the character: he's a coward who often hides in a barrel, but he's a huge buff dude who wouldn't even fit in the barrel. you get what i mean? puss doesn't burst in saying "i'll save you my lady" and then haha is a dude. he just bursts in to save someone. another standard plot: convince someone they are brave by pretending they defeat something, they they get overconfident and find real trouble and learn to reign it in or fully return to the status quo, wonder how they'll do it. damn, they did the getting too confident straight, but put enough good jokes in the scene to not make it awkward (hard to avoid), not to see if they can do the rest well. making Dulcinea (the female polite cat) do it because puss is too tired helps. "it's ok buddy, i'll read it to you" "you're a cute friend" subversion of expectation and cute as fuck, these are the joke i love. oh no, the man travels with a shadow over his face in spite of physics, he's definitely evil. surprisingly polite to those he thinks unwell though. and the standard plot continues. going with the "hopes and dreams dashed, but then shows bravery for reals". yep that's basically exactly what they did, with one funny in concept but sadly meh in execution fightscene. this isn't an episode you watch for the end, you watch for the jokes which are amazing.

1.8 human shrek is on the cover of the romance novel. blink and you'll miss it and i love it. oh no, puss ate xanathar's fish, and is now hunted by a Sinnamon smelling golem. this is so stupid in the best way. classic way for things to gain a soul too, it's neat. and damn does it make for a neat episode.

1.9 "let me gaze upon your golden booty" "i am uncomfortable" yes i'm still trying to get you to watch the show. oh a dust devil, neat. and that it's a demon is accurate to how people used to think about them (to my knowledge the origin of djinn). i think that was the first reuse of an asset i noticed (if you ignore the bandits): a sceptre that was broken in a previous episode. this is not a negative, just impressive that it took this long to use the same asset for a similar thing. also love that Dulcinea's arc so far is getting angry, but not like in a bad way.

1.10 excalibur? ok, this is an interesting take. generally not the angle of a reluctant hero (fun dnd PC backstory?). and the classic puss being pretty lost when he can't be the hero... starts to feel a bit overdone, but how many things can you do with him? also the animation touches are very nice. is this a story about cheating? because it sounds like a story about cheating, and with someone not getting over their ex. also this episode has some crazy good action. also this sword has a problem with asparagus.

1.11 uhm, that's not what sphynx looks like. where are her inks and piercings? did they accidentally use the wrong model? "well, technically medicine is the best medicine, but laughter is cheaper". wait what!? the cow barlady used to be an assassin?! also is this an episode about racism? like this could turn sour quickly. also what i think is clever but also semi noticeable is a cost cutting measure (honestly i've been noticing it for a while): if things don't move they aren't actually rendered in 3d, instead a single render is made of them and then it's a flat image that animation is rendered on top of. now this makes total sense to do: it's a lot less rendering so everything will be faster, which is a necessity if it's a tv show with tv show budget with 15 episodes. it allows for backgrounds that are relatively detailed unlike other 3d shows which are very often very plain. but if things look slightly off to you this may be why. damn, mature talk about wanting to do things but not doing it. this show is crazy. also damn that's one evil mouse. at least the sphynx petrified is the correct model.

1.12 that's just a god damn goblin. like literally called a goblin. and visually think dnd goblin... wild. also this is just about racism. mostly a pretty standard episode, but pusses unwavering belief is nice. and if a new person joins the cast that would make it even better.

1.13 earlier today episode? can always be fun. oh, Dulcinea gets to have puss' standard problem: feeling like he's no longer needed, and thus no longer him, thus problem. "i'll even write all of the stories myself. i will use all of the words. so many words!" and suddenly puss is talking like fucking trump. when puss thinks Dulcinea may be in legal troubles he'll immediately start helping her out, because pull aint no snitch lol. well now this episode conflicts with the last wish. Puss being against wishing stars here but going after it then? well, there is of course desperation

1.14 mother Mary the cat? so it'll be a puss' pride episode. the episode didn't have any big fightscenes, so instead the focus was put on the final dance. odd, but really fun.

1.15 a curse of bad luck turning puss into a black cat, that's just neat. wild that i had nothing more to say about it despite it being the last episode of season 1. oh well, on to season 2 i guess.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! 토끼의 해가 밝았다. 새해 인사, 떡국, new year’s resolutions 대신 January goals + intentions 작성.

남양주에서 개포동으로 넘어가는 길엔 잠실 교보에 들러 뉴욕에 가져갈 책을 몇권 더 샀다. 소설책 네권과 만화책 한권. 졸업을 한학기 앞두고 전공책을 더 많이 봐야하나 싶기도 하지만. 좋은 소설에서 건져올린 마음을 흔드는 문장 하나가 그 어떤 전문가의 ��언, 그 어떤 연구 결과보다도 미래 내 practice의 튼튼한 뿌리가 되어줄거라 믿는다.

일산 가족들과 점심식사. 베이징덕이 맛있었다. “야(나)가 첫째라 예쁨 많이 받았다.” 반복해 들어도 질리지 않는 사랑의 역사. 그 역사의 오랜 내레이터로써 오래오래 우리 가운데 계셔주셨으면 좋겠다 우리 할머니.

저녁엔 엄마랑 집에서 대구탕을 끓여 먹고 Lavona에게 재촉 이메일을 보낸 뒤 office of advising 과도 미팅을 잡았다.

저녁으론 양파, 가지, 감자, 돼지고기를 넣어 카레를 만들어먹었다.

Field. 저녁엔 떡국을 해먹었다. 이번학기엔 할게 많고 스트레스가 심한 날일수록 저녁을 더 잘 챙겨먹는 것으로. Social worker/Therapist로써의 커리어는 나의 일부일 뿐이란 걸 잊지말자. 잘 먹고, 잘 놀고, 잘 자고. “막학기”란 단어에 흔들려 공들여 쌓아온 건강한 우선순위의 탑을 무너뜨려선 안돼.

Field. Kevin과 이야기를 나누다 울어버렸다. EK가 나를 얼마나 옭아매고 있는지 새삼 실감. 필드를 마치고는 SJ랑 BCD에 갔다. 스트레스 받을 땐 역시 순두부. How spicy? SPICY please.

오전 내내 비실비실 졸다가, The Royal Tenenbaums (제일 좋아하는 Wes Anderson 영화로 등극), 저녁으론 주원이랑 Bahn 에서 쌀국수, 분짜, 썸머롤, 디저트론 붕어싸만코.

구글이 간밤에 12000명을 해고했다는 뉴스. 주원이 아는 몇몇 사람도 layoff 의 대상이 되었다고. 마음이 무겁고 머리가 복잡해보이는 주원을 어떻게 위로해줄 수 있을지 생각하다가, 이조차도 지극히 ‘나’ 위주의 생각이란걸 깨닫고, 그저 곁에서 이야기를 듣고, 같이 맛있는걸 먹으면, 그것이 지금의 최선일지도 모르겠다는 결론에 이르렀다. 내가 힘들때도 그런 시간들이 가장 힘이 되니까.

커리어 조언을 구하기 위한 자리였지만, 상황이 상황이니만큼 현재 필드에 대한 고충을 털어놓게 되었는데, 대화 끝에 Jenny는 자신의 첫 직장 이야기를 해주면서, 영 아니다 싶으면 남은 시간동안 ESA로 돌아와 자기와 함께 일하자고, 언제나 두 팔 벌려 환영이라고 힘주어 말해주었다. 생각지도 못했던 구원의 빛줄기.

집에 돌아오자마자 주원, SJ, Kayla, Anju, Rachel과 긴급 논의 후, 빠르게 결심을 세웠다. EK와 헤어질 결심, 남은 3개월을 “버티기”보다, 더 많이 배우고, 느끼고, 이 직업에 대한 내 믿음을 공고히 하고, 행복하고 자신감있게 졸업을 준비하는 시간으로 만들겠다는 결심. Jenny에게 문자를 보내고, Lavona와 통화를 했다.

1월 한달을 돌이켜보니, 내가 나를 참 열심히 돕고, 응원했구나 싶다. 내가 나를 더 나은 곳으로 데려다 놓기 위해 부단히 꼼지락거리고, 손을 내밀고, 때론 목소리를 높였다. 3학기 내내 글로만 배운 Self-advocacy 를 마지막 학기에 이렇게 몸소 실천해본다. 아무것도 하지 않으면 아무런 일도 일어나지 않으니까..

So You Want To: Make A RPG Character Portrait

And, Unfortunately, Lack Art Skills

Introduction

Like I said, I'm against commercial use of diffusion-based image generation, so please take notice and don't use the advice below in the process of creating commercial role-playing game supplements.

Let's start with the necessary tools: like I said, LAION's datasets are beyond useless - with the exception of the new SDXL, which is pretty much the only one first-party dataset for Stable Diffusion that works. So, in order to save time, you want a serviceable dataset: Dreamshaper, ICBINP, RPG, SDXL as a last resort. Most sites that host them tend to shake you down for money, so here are some recommendations:

Leonardo.AI: their free account grants you 150 points daily (non-cumulative) and allows you to use a lot of third-party datasets (including Dreamshaper, RPG and SDXL). The generator has some special sauce plugins running under the hood, meaning that your results will be noticeably better than if run on any other site or a local setup.

Playground AI: their free account allows you to use some interesting third-party datasets, but there's a lot of fine print of the shifty-as-fuck kind when it comes to quality of generated images.

Nightcafe: unfortunately, it only supports SDXL when it comes to worthwhile datasets, but a free account gives you 5 points every day if you log in and you start with 150, so it should be enough.

Of course, it's best to run a local setup, so if you have a gaming PC built in the last four or five years, and with a Nvidia video card, do so.

Writing Prompts

Two things you need to know about prompts in StableDiffusion: try not to go over 75 words and put the most important things you want first. I don't want to go into the technicalities, even if that's your kink, but that's how the thing works.

Of course monkeys on the internet tend to suffer from bouts of logorrhea while trying to describe what they want, and I warned about that before, so get to the point and don't be too specific. Stable Diffusion has problems with small details anyway.

For my artist imitation tests, I started by setting the style, like:

Double parentheses mean that Stable Diffusion has to pay extra attention to the phrase: every set of parentheses increases the weight of phrase by 1.1, so double parentheses means that the phrase is weighed at 1.1×1.1, and that's 1.21 if you don't have a calculator handy. Don't go above that because otherwise the results get spectacularly fucky (I canned the image with a hellishly distorted Maine Coon that showed up due to unfortunate wording, so I'll spare you that story - it's easy to guess what I asked for, though).

You can also try more generic descriptions of the style, like:

((woodcut portrait)) of ((renaissance portrait)) of ((vintage prison mugshot)) of ((kodachrome 400 photo)) of ((promotional movie still)) of

They still work and go off the rails less often than invoking a particular artist's style (for example, asking for Vermeer drives the generator bonkers).

Then, you follow with the base description of the character. Please keep in mind that some datasets are overly literal and if you ask for a "girl" you will most probably get a child as a result - try a "young woman" instead.

Notice that in two cases, I put more emphasis on the hair style and color - just in case, but as I learned lately, this is often necessary. For example, when asking for "bald" without emphasis along with "portrait by leonardo da vinci" for the portrait of Sir Baldy Bald, I got eight different stages of receding hairline, two portraits of Matthew Mercer and two portraits of definitely bald guys. Not that I haven't repeatedly warned that diffusion-based image generation is a trainwreck most of the time.

Asking for a celebrity likeness at this stage is hella iffy, particularly when it comes to recently famous people. Like, you might not get a likeness of Jenna Ortega. Even asking for "young" version of old actors might get problematic when the generator starts to artificially de-age a more recent photo or doesn't find any reference at all.

For example: on the left, we have a genuine photo of Madonna from the 1980s. In the middle, I asked Leonardo.AI for "young Madonna" and it went off the rails. On the right, I changed the prompt to "1980s Madonna" and got something more realistic but still not entirely on the mark. It's typical - unless you're running an embedding or a LORA of a celebrity likeness on a local setup, it's gonna turn out genericized and/or distorted. Another example I can refer you to is Henry Cavill getting mashed together with Michał Żebrowski for a barely comprehensible reason.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, Stable Diffusion doesn't do little details well. Eye color usually parses, particularly if the face has a high enough resolution (meaning, it's more sure to work on close-ups in default 512px images and in high-res fixes). Scars, facial piercings and the like usually don't work, when they do it's a small miracle requiring very specific conditions (usually a resolution high enough to consider them a distinct object), and you might be better off omitting them entirely. Larger things like tattoos work, but in a very general way. Meaning, a general location and theme of tattoos should parse, but anything more specific will often send the entire thing off the rails and put stuff from the description as items elsewhere in the photo. Meaning, you'll ask for a "flames tattoo" and everything will be on fire. Oops.

Now, we should get the character dressed. My go-to syntax for that relies on the word "wearing":

However, asking for two different clothing items in different colors often goes off the rails. Like I said in an earlier post, the generators often confuse the description, switching and omitting colors even if you put emphasis on the specific phrase. If you asked for a specific artist's style, you'll often have to put emphasis on the color anyway, because the default tends to go right over it. An example can be seen in the example of Vermeer's style going off the rails - despite the dress being very emphatically described as red, "painting by vermeer" overwrote it as blue anyway.

There's also the matter of the generator having weird concepts of things. For example, "armor" by itself defaults to a typical simple plate armor, and not even "leather armor" is going to convince it otherwise. Even "scifi armor" is not going to parse correctly 100% of the time, but a "combat armor" or, better "tactical combat armor" will usually swerve it into a modern plate carrier. Curiously, though, asking for a "space marine armor" will go for a Starcraft/Warhammer 40000 armored spacesuit, and a "mech suit" will most often go for a weird, angular robot suit (add "armor" to that if it doesn't but you want it to).

A generator is not supposed to draw anything it doesn't have info on. This means two things: omitting a part of clothing, like trousers or boots, will limit the framing to only what's described. In case of dresses, robes and similar long outfits, it will often frame the character tightly enough to draw only a part of it - particularly if you defined the style as "portrait", as that keyword tends to focus on the character's face. Another thing, if you haven't described the background yet, and you don't need to, the background will be left as some kind of blank - usually a nondescript splash of color. If you asked for a historical-styled portrait, the generator will infer a muted, neutral color from that, based on actual examples. Asking for "illustration" or "concept art" should default to white. With "photography" and similar keywords, all bets are off. For example, "prison mugshot" left to its own devices either went with a nondescript dark background or prison-related things like bars and wire mesh fences. Asking for a "cook" filled the background with a generic kitchen. "Bottle of beer" gravitated towards tables, pubs and dining rooms. "Anime art" with a "medieval" subject either left the background blank or went for stone walls, castles and the like.

If you want a specific background, though, keep it simple. Even one word can be enough, particularly if the generator infers the rest from the character description. For example "garden" background for an "asian woman wearing a qipao" will add stone lanterns, torii gates and pagoda-roofed pavilions as needed. "City ruins" background for a "scifi soldier" will be full of damaged skyscrapers. What you can specify is weather and time of day - for example, the young Madonna example above specifies "alleyway at night" as a background.

And finally, lighting and stuff. With everything I mentioned already, this just adds an extra polish, but has to be applied with caution. "For example, "Dramatic" or "cinematic" lighting is good if you're going for chiaroscuro in paintings or a cinematic look in photos (it tends to infer a bit of movie-like haze) - for example, it works fine if you're asking for Rembrandt or Caravaggio, but it's gonna ruin the prompt if you're going for da Vinci, for whom "soft lighting" is more appropriate. You can also describe the lighting more directly, like "bright sunlight", "sunset", "torchlight", "candlelight" and the like (as long as it doesn't logically contradict the soft/dramatic/cinematic description). You can also add general quality keywords here, like "worn" (to get a bit of distressing on vintage photos, for example), "detailed" (it's a bit of magical thinking, but it might influence the look of armor and interiors), "black and white", "desaturated", "faded" or "vivid colors" etc. "bokeh" will also work for photographic styles, as a shorthand for low depth of field with background light sources.

Also, do not copy negative prompts from the internet. Stable Diffusion can't parse the concept of correct or incorrect anatomy or any other common fuckups it makes. Instead, one overly-specific keyword can wreck an entire concept of anime-style drawing or heavy makeup. Start with a blank negative prompt and correct from there. Your perp in the mugshot has a hat you don't want? Add "hat" to the negative prompt. Explorer in the savannah is sitting on a gimpy pony? Add "horse" to the negative prompt. You can also rule out a specific eye color, hair color and general use of color that popped up ass outta nowhere (if you can't trace where the use of color blue comes from despite being absent from the positive prompt, you can add "blue" to negative prompt and the problem should go away).

The Numbers Game

I explained this one before: diffusion-based generators can have drastically different results depending on the number of steps in a generation process and the guidance factor that defines how closely the generator follows the prompt. Web-based generators, if they allow tinkering with that, often obscure the exact values with wording like "short", "medium" and "long" rendering time. No matter what, don't go below "medium" with anything.

Then, there's the matter of image proportions and resolution. Proportions, if you can tweak them, are usually typical: 3:2, 4:3, 16:9 and their vertical equivalents. If not, you get a square by default. From my experience, going for 2:3 or 3:4 proportions for portraits with the shorter size as close to default 512px as possible yields the best results, as a lot of input images that were portraits before being pounded into mathemagical fairy dust also had those proportions. Also, some web-based generators tend to obscure resolution as well, maybe with a tooltip specifying the rough dimensions (like Nightcafe's "medium" size being about 400px on the shorter side).

Practical Magic

Okay, so now you know what the knobs and levers do. You got the dictionary, the grammar, etcetera. Time to talk the talk.

Google searches for "fantasy art" and "sci fi art" are going to give you listicles naming some hotshots like Anato Finnstark, Simon Stalenhag and Bayard Wu, and my tests contain a who's who of the classics I first learned of in the Upper Triassic of mid-1990s.

If you're going for something a bit more down to Earth and classy, like creating a who's who of your dark fantasy local nobility, classical portraits are a good idea. Be advised, however, that if you go for a specific artist's look, you'll be wrestling with peculiarities too numerous to list. For example, Sir Baldy Bald as painted by da Vinci refused to lose his hair in most attempts, and women in armor as painted by Rembrandt tended to look much older and more masculine than intended - meaning all that had to be included in the negative prompt. Rembrandt, however, is good if you intend to create portraits of commoners, burghers and nobles in the same style.

Early 20th century or its analogue can swing two ways: either vintage photos or pulp artwork. For the latter, I need to run more extensive tests, but if you know who Norman Rockwell, J.C. Leyendecker or Earl Norem are, you know where to start.
