Yesterday was a rough day for me, but it's all done. It was a touching funeral ceremony.
I'll stay abroad for another week and some change, just to help out with remaining family and all that.
Regularly scheduled activity should hopefully be back early December.
Thank you for bearing with me. Big ups to you.

It’s Summer And We’re Running Out Of Ice - Watchmen (TV Series) blog
(SPOILER WARNING: The following is an in-depth critical analysis. if you haven’t seen this episode yet, you may want to before reading this review)
Tumblr media
I’m not going to lie. I was incredibly sceptical going into this. This isn’t the first TV adaptation of a classic novel to go beyond the source material and try to continue the story, and they nearly always suck (see The Handmaid’s Tale and The Man In The High Castle). There’s a reason why books end where they’re supposed to end. If the author intended to carry the story on, they would have done so. This is why I get angry when the TV industry arrogantly oversteps the mark and try to continue a plot that has already come to a satisfactory conclusion. Doing a sequel to Watchmen, a story that hinges on the ambiguity of its ending, is just utter madness to me, and allowing Damon Lindelof to write that sequel borders on moronic at first glance. This is the man behind the TV series Lost, a show that ran out of steam within the first couple of episodes due to the fact that the plot was complete and total bollocks and the fact that nobody could be bothered to come up with satisfying answers for these ludicrous mysteries and series arcs beforehand. They were just making that shit up as he went along. Now you’re handing Lindelof the keys to one of the most intricate and detailed comic book properties of all time?! Fuck, why don’t you just let JJ Abrams direct the next Star Wars mo- Oh yeah, I forgot, he already did that.
Thankfully, judging by this first episode anyway, HBO’s Watchmen is nowhere near as bad as Lost. It’s certainly far more engaging and coherent. Does that mean I’m looking forward to the rest of this season? Well... I don’t know if I’d go that far. I’m definitely intrigued though.
HBO’s Watchmen is a sequel to the graphic novel (Lindelof called it a remix, but come on. Grow a pair and call it what it is. A sequel). Superheroes are still illegal, Robert Redford is now the President, Rorschach’s death has inspired a white supremacist cult, and it’s raining squid.
Tumblr media
Yeah, the raining squid thing feels like the only egregious bit of fanwank in here, to be fair. Maybe they’re going somewhere with this, but I have my doubts. Are we supposed to assume that Ozymandias has been making squid rain for the past thirty odd years in order to keep up the whole alien invasion ruse? Why squid rain? And why is everyone so nonchalant about it? Shouldn’t people be just a bit concerned by this, considering what happened in New York?
Speaking of Ozymandias, we see him riding a horse and writing plays for his butler and maid in some fancy mansion. Quite what the significance of The Watchmaker’s Son is, I don’t know. All I do know is I’m not going to be able to sleep at night without thinking about Jeremy Irons’ thighs from now on, so thanks for that.
Putting my cynicism aside for a moment, I do like what Lindelof is trying to do here. He’s not merely cashing in on the Watchmen brand. There is a genuine effort to do something fresh and different with this material, and I commend that. Watchmen’s central theme has always been about power, but whereas the source material focused mainly on its relation to sex (Comedian’s hedonism, Nite Owl’s impotence, Rorschach’s mummy issues and the sexual objectification of Silk Spectre), the TV series seems to be zeroing in on race as a topic. This I applaud. Expanding on certain areas that the graphic novel only ever really touched upon is a great idea. This doesn’t feel like a repeat of the graphic novel, but rather a clarification of it, exploring areas and themes that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons may have overlooked. This helps set this series apart from the outset.
The opening scenes where we see the Tulsa Massacre of 1921 is a pretty harrowing way to start. I’m ashamed to say I had no idea about the Tulsa Massacre prior to this, and we could have a whole other discussion about why schools seem to have been avoiding teaching specific topics like this in favour of the broad strokes of the Jim Crow era, but now is not the time. The fact that it’s depicted here sets the stage for what’s to come. Some have criticised the show for the length of time the opening focuses on Tulsa, claiming that it sensationalises the pain of black people at that time. I personally don’t think it does. It’s not overly graphic or gratuitous, at least in my opinion, but it is a very shocking way to open a series. Some might say even upsetting, but I think it’s important that we saw this because it’s relevant in setting the tone for the episode and indeed the season as a whole, as well as letting the audience know that this show isn’t going to fuck around or shy away from more sensitive topics, and I can respect that. Unlike Zack Snyder’s overly stylised adaptation from 2009, Watchmen the HBO series is grounded very firmly in reality.
Tumblr media
Let’s discuss characters. This episode mostly focuses on Angela Abar, also known as Sister Night. Regina King has given some terrific performances in the past and this is no exception. She’s simply phenomenal. The way she switches from light-hearted wife and baker to violent, no nonsense vigilante cop. The shift is noticeable and yet both personas feel like they’re aspects of the same character. It’s exceptionally good. It also helps that the character herself makes for a great protagonist. Having survived the ‘White Night’ four years prior, where the Seventh Kavalry attacked the families of forty Tulsa police officers in response to the government giving special reparations to the victims of racial injustice, Angela has become cynical and battle hardened. She has no sympathy for Kavlary members and is willing to skip due process by beating one of them to a pulp and bundling him in the back of her car. She’s angry and in pain, and yet retains the audience's sympathy. I’m interested to see what happens to her over the course of the season.
I also really liked her friendship with Don Johnson’s character Judd Crawford. Johnson is a charismatic performer and Crawford is a charismatic character. He really dives into the olde western sheriff persona and seems to be having a lot of fun with it. Crawford is the only other character, besides Angela, who stayed on as a police officer after the White Night, and the two characters seem to have a great relationship. They laugh and joke around and there’s clearly a mutual respect between the two. I genuinely like this character, which is what makes his murder at the end so much more heartbreaking. Not to mention all the little details that force us to realise he may not be what he seems. We see him sniff cocaine in private and there’s a photo on his desk featuring the kid from school who aggressively asked Angela why black people deserve reparations. It doesn’t necessarily mean that Crawford himself is racist, but there’s clearly more going on with him that we don’t know about.
The final character of interest at the moment is Tim Blake Nelson’s character Wade Tillman, aka Looking Glass. We don’t know anything about him yet other than he’s a human lie detector, which I find very intriguing and I hope will be explored further as the show goes on. There’s a lot to play around with there, and the moral implications are tantalising. A conviction based not on physical evidence, but rather on the observations of one man. Even Sherlock Holmes has to back his deductions up with evidence, and yet Looking Glass clearly doesn’t need to. That just raises so many ethical questions. What if he has a particular bias towards someone? What about burden of proof? What if forensic evidence contradicts him? If Looking Glass is supposedly that accurate, does that mean the police will side with him regardless? It’s a great premise for a character and I really like Nelson’s performance, giving him a cold and detached personality that contrasts beautifully with Angela’s.
Tumblr media
The characters and ideas are solid, however where I feel the show is lacking is with the consistency of its world building. Let’s analyse. This is an alternate history where Nixon used superheroes to extend his term limits, but after the New York attack at the end of the graphic novel, he’s been kicked out in favour of Robert Redford (nice nod to the source material there by the way. lol). As a result, black people got reparations for the racial injustices their ancestors went through and police are now unable to openly carry firearms without special permission from Panda (literally a cop wearing a panda costume). However, after the events of White Night, the government agrees to allow cops to wear masks to protect their identities, hence why quote/unquote ‘superheroes’ like Sister Night and Looking Glass are around despite the existence of the Keene Act. These are, in effect, legal vigilantes. Except already there’s a problem with conflicting messages. I like the idea of masked cops. In the current age of Black Lives Matter and police accountability, it makes sense and could be interesting to explore. However this is hindered by the whole ‘no guns’ stuff. Again, not a bad idea. America’s current gun laws are, to put it mildly, woefully inadequate. What if we went the other way? What if not only was it near impossible to own a gun, cops couldn’t even use a taser without special permission. Both ideas could work... but not at the same time.
Cops being allowed to wear masks creates the effect of empowering them through anonymity, and runs the risk of officers overstepping the mark and normal citizens being unable to hold them to account. But on the other hand, we’ve also got cops whose lives are constantly at risk and who are hindered in their duties by an overprotective nanny state, which effectively depowers them. So... which is it? It can’t be both. I like the scene where Panda reads the law about how the use of firearms can only be permitted in extreme circumstances, and everyone just angrily shouts him down because it tells us how the police feel about this new system. The fact that they’ve made one cop the sole arbiter of these new restrictions and forced him to dress like some ridiculous furry demonstrates the sheer amount of disdain they have towards this policy. But having said that, with the masks on, they have the power and freedom to break into people’s caravans and basically kidnap and assault them without consequence anyway. So what the fuck are they complaining about? It just doesn’t gel together. Either have it that the rules and regulations of the police are the same as our world except that cops can wear masks now, which has led to an increasing problem of police brutality and corruption, or have it that the police are being too heavily restricted and so a few have chosen to turn toward more ‘unorthodox’ methods of crime fighting out of frustration. Pick one and go with it.
Then there’s the Seventh Kavalry. Again, not a bad idea. In fact I love it. A white supremacist cult that’s taken Rorschach’s journal as gospel and have banded together out of a fear of being sidelined in a more liberal world. Very relevant and very interesting. Except... well... there’s not an awful lot to it, is there? In the original graphic novel, there was no clear bad guy. Ozymandias believed he was doing the ultimate good by killing millions of people to save the world, and everyone reluctantly went along with it. It was morally complicated. This, not so much. They’re unambiguously evil. The end. So what? What is there to discuss? It just feels lacking compared to the graphic novel and it runs the risk of creating a conflict that’s too clear cut. Obviously we’re going to end up siding with the cops, regardless of what they do, because the alternative is objectively bad. Hopefully Lindelof is going somewhere with this, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t say I was slightly concerned.
So on the whole, would I say I enjoyed this first episode? Well... I’d say I did, but with reservations. There’s some good characters and ideas that could be interesting to explore and develop, but its execution feels a little shaky in places. Hopefully the episodes to come will offer further clarity.

I’m gonna go ahead and put this under a cut, because it’s not exactly relevant to this blog, but it IS tangentially related to it and I thought it was too hilarious not to share here:
So, story time.  For those of you who saw the post I made about it, you’ll know that I made a Twitter as somewhat of a companion account to this blog (@midzelink over there, same as here), and it’s been an...interesting experience.  I generally didn’t like Twitter (and I still don’t!), but it HAS exposed me to some pieces of art and other media that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise, so I’m pretty grateful for that, at least.  Mostly, my Twitter is currently a dumping ground for posts I don’t think are Quality Enough for this blog, but I’ve also uploaded a lot of my GIFs there, and I’m hoping to help spread the word of Midlink Week with it here in just a few days.  Blah blah blah, et cetera, et cetera.
But one OTHER thing that being on Twitter has given me is an opportunity to see...people reuploading my GIFs!  This was something I didn’t really think would bother me all that much until I saw it action.  To make a somewhat long story kind of short, I saw two reuploads of two completely different GIFs - and though the first case was a Tweet with zero likes or RTs (that the user simply deleted upon my request), the second case was an artist with a hefty number of followers who then credited and followed me after I asked them to.  So, each incident ended fairly without any problems (I wasn’t hostile in either circumstance), and I’ve already taken it upon myself to start watermarking all of my graphics from this point forward to prevent this kind of thing in the future.
Fast forward about a week, and I see a Tweet on my timeline featuring a quoted Tweet that I for some reason am unable to view.  I switch over to my personal Twitter and see that it’s a Tweet from the account @GifZelda, which is an account with over 32K followers dedicated to, well...posting GIFs about Zelda.  Trying to view the account on my LoZ account yields this:
Tumblr media
And my initial reaction is naturally, damn, what in the hell did I do?
So I do a bit of digging, and I find out that this account is following the really popular artist who reposted one of my GIFs (link to that Tweet thread).  On top of that, scrolling through their account, it’s painfully clear that they aren’t creating most (possibly any) of the graphics that they’re uploading; though it doesn’t appear they’ve reuploaded any of my stuff personally, they did RT that GIF that the artist reuploaded, and I recognize one of the GIFs they’ve recently posted as belonging to one of the GFX folks right here on Tumblr (whom I won’t name to keep them out of this).
Given the above info, I can only surmise the following:
Twitter user @GifZelda saw my completely valid request to receive credit for a GIF that I created in the replies of a Tweet they Retweeted
being an account comprised almost entirely of reposted and uncredited GIFs, they blocked me
Therefore:
Twitter user @GifZelda is a gotdamn clown and a coward
Like, damn.  Reposting GIFs is one thing - but blocking someone who hasn’t even interacted with you out of fear that they might do something as benign as ask for credit for a GIF they made if you end up reposting on of their graphics in the future?  The amount of disrespect this punk has for the people who make the very GIFs they pride their account on around  is REALLY freaking incredible, lmfao.
And no, reposting GIFs isn’t nearly as bad as, say, reposting art - but these things still take time and effort, and it’s a hobby I’ve committed a lot of both to, considering I make literally $0 from it when all is said and done.  Asking for credit isn’t overstepping bounds.  It’s just the bare minimum, folks.
Anyways, as ridiculous as this whole situation has been, it IS pretty hilarious how blatant of an asshole this person is, and if they think blocking me on my LoZ account is gonna stop me from requesting credit should they ever repost one of my GIFs, they’ve got another think coming B)

New updates
Let’s talk about what is going on. I shall go into “great detail” with these topics.
Oh boy, can’t wait to make the internet mad with my silly reasons.
You can CTRL + F to find the topic you wish to view if, things get too long to read. :P
Table of contents
Inactive Twitter
speedrunning
Streaming
Sonic Hack
New things
Inactive twitter
Ok, so, I’m sure 4 or 6 people noticed but my old twitter account @Soniksama is now inactive. I mean, it’s in the bio but people don’t read bios, that’s silly. Back on topic.
What does this mean for me? Well I’m fine and well. I feel pretty happy about doing this and making a new account. But I shall give my reasons for why I did this.
I wanted a new start
I wanted to start over on Twitter. I was not happy with the current account SonikSama. I wanted to have a do over and make a new name for myself, and distance myself from speedrunners and some people and toxic users
While I did have “friends” on the other account. My twitter was full of friends who left Twitter or couldn’t get back in. And the other side was people that followed me cause I was friends with someone else.
I like being followed, but if, it means being followed by people who are there, just to add a number to your follower count. I am the kind of guy where if, a friendship is not mutual in any way, it’s not worth having in my eyes. This is why I followed mutuals on my new account.
And I wanted to make new friends, my old friends, I have outgrew them
And I rather not be “known” as a speedrunner on my new account. I’m not too fond of speed running to begin with. I will talk about this, later on.
I wanted to re-brand myself as something else, using Sonik has got pretty old and it needs to be a change. And my Girlfriend gave me the best name.
I followed all the people who I have a mutual friendship with, and made one exception to someone who is not a mutual.
These are reasons that you will disagree with, but they are my reasons and hope you understand, if, not, oh well. I’m not gonna worry.
You might be asking “what’s the new Twitter account, Sonik?” Well, chances are, I’m following you. I am following people I trust, and are mutual friends.
There is a chance, I might have missed some friends. As long as you are still following @SonikSama on Twitter, I will be able to find you, If, you unfollow Soniksama, I’m not going to bother to look for you.
Tumblr media
2. Speedrunning
I have been more off then on with speedrunning games. I do see the point. Yes, you speedrun to test yourself, and see if, you can improve your skills and beat your time, and maybe beat someone else time.
I can understand the drive to be better, and that’s great. But this hobby is a mixed bag. Speedrunning can bring the very best out of people, and it can bring the worst out of people. A double edge sword
I been “speedrunning” for far too long, and I reached my peak in speedrunning, and as such, I made a list of 10 games I have speedrun. You can view said list here. https://www.twitch.tv/collections/UoJnnnOx-xSHUw
While I no longer care for speedrunning, that much, and their community, ugh, I will still do SRL races, and Individual Levels of games. Who knows, I may add speedrunning to my future games, but who knows
But I have to see what the future holds, If I do any speedruns, I will upload them to Twitch but I won’t put them on SRC, at least, the sonic speedruns anyway.
You thought I was gonna say something bad about speedrunning. Didn’t you?
Tumblr media
3. Streaming
Ah, this is something I lost interest in. I used to enjoy streaming to entertain viewers and chat with viewers, and other streamers. But as streaming gets more advanced on twitch, the harder it becomes to entertain viewers, let alone get any viewers.
I will give my reasons why I lost interest in streaming.
Shitty ISP or Twitch messing up.
There no one to really entertain anymore
I’m a small channel, I have no way of getting noticed or entertaining people
No one really watches, as most of the stuff I have done was done better by someone else.
I don’t enjoy streaming as much (After 5 years of streaming.. Damn, it has been that long), going from entertaining viewers to no one is a bummer.
“You should not worry about views, stream for fun” That used to work back in the old days of Twitch. Today, viewers seem to watch people speedruns, people rage at games, like fools, Social eating streams, IRL streams, and new game streams.
And the most common thing is Donation streams where people pay the streamer to watch freak out from bits or to donate for their “charity” Ugh.
*Streamer drama
It seems to be a common trend. Some shit is always going down. Twitch is full of nice people, but more than often, you meet the bastard who is nice but will stab you in the back later.
People assuming that other streamers are copying them, when they themselves copy others.
Or disgusting is, people ganging up on those who were done wrong.
Tumblr media
Why should I bother to stream when no one shows up? I can’t really compete with other streamers or have anything to offer that hasn’t already been done.
With the way Twitch is now, it’s hard for small channels like me to get anywhere. You have to stay relevant, in order to keep up on Twitch’s rat race. Yes, Twitch gives us the power to host to give small or big channels time in the light but it’s kinda worthless as it gets used on “bigger” streamers
So, to end this part, I will be doing 5 streams, assuming things go well.
Dec 5th, Dec 10th, Dec 15th, Dec 20th, Dec 25th And 31st as one bonus stream to end the last stream on new years
Game list below
Sonic Colors (if it works, and I can find it.)
Mario Kart Wii
crypt of the necrodancer
mighty switch force
Super Meat Boy
Bonus stream
Once this happens, Any future streams will be for SRL races. But only time will tell how I will feel about streaming later in the future.
EDIT: I think I will take a break from streaming for a long while. :P
Sonic Hack
Boy. So I made a post about this topic. The main art for the hack is gone and level layout for Green hill Act one is, but it seems that levels that are edited will be wiped by some odd bug. So this hack is dead. It might just be a Special stage hack.
But it’s safe to say, this project is not gonna happen.
New things
I been getting back into recording Let’s plays
Working on game dev stuff.
I have plans on making a Youtube let’s play Discord server.
Been making reviews, and having fun
Been making new friends
Life has been pretty sweet. ‘v’

Making it Matter: What to Do When the Scene Doesn’t Move the Story.
This post contains nongraphic talk of sex and torture. If either of those things bother you, read with caution.
Imagine this. You’re writing the latest chapter of your story, which includes a torture scene. You research various torture methods for that scene, add lots of details to make it more impactful, and when it’s finished, you’re proud of how it turned out. Then, when you ask a friend to read it and they say they don’t like reading torture, you assure them that you wrote it so that people can skip that part without missing anything important.
Congratulations! You’ve written a gratuitous scene.
As the name implies, a gratuitous scene is one that is uncalled for - generally in the form of off-putting subject matter - or which does nothing to move the story along. In fact, most such scenes impede the progression of the plot, and if they leave people feeling bored or upset, you’re likely to lose readers. Any kind of scene can be gratuitous, but here are some specific examples.
Scenes where nothing important happens. Every scene in a story should do one of two things: advance the plot, or develop relationships between characters. A scene where a group of friends play a game might seem like a fun interlude, but unless the protagonist is planning to make a move on his love interest, it’s probably going to bore readers who are anxiously waiting for the story’s romantic leads to get together. Scenes like this are even more frustrating in darker stories; you might think it’s a good way to lighten the mood, but readers who want to know if the kidnapper will be found aren’t going to appreciate the delay.
Scenes that tell the readers what they already know. There’s nothing inherently wrong with reiterating information. Sometimes your characters want to write out everything they know about a crime, or the protagonist’s behavior is influenced by the memory of an earlier event, and that’s perfectly acceptable. Then there are scenes where one character tells another about events the readers saw firsthand, or explains plot points without any new information or ways of looking at the subject. It’s all right to bring up such information as a natural part of conversation as long as it’s summarized or in passing, but if it’s the sole focus of the scene, readers will likely lose interest.
Torture scenes. There are scenes that can drive readers away through sheer boredom, and there are scenes that upset or disturb them to the point where they can’t keep reading. Torture scenes aren’t always unnecessary, but what is unnecessary is describing every detail. It’s easy to argue otherwise - the details make the scene hit harder, the author wanted to show what the victim went through or didn’t want to avoid the subject, etc - but at the end of the day, if a scene can be skipped without missing anything, it’s a scene you don’t need. And even if onscreen torture does serve a purpose, you should still reconsider a blow by blow account.
Sex Scenes. Whether sex scenes are upsetting or boring depends on the reader and the contents of the scene, as well as the genre you’re writing for. People will expect multiple detailed scenes from an errotic romance, but a sexual interlude in an adventure story can leave readers impatient for the plot to move along. And if you’re writing rape, you could lose readers for a whole other reason (see torture above). Even errotica can become boring if the characters’ relationship never grows or changes, or if every sex scene follows the same pattern.
Action scenes. Incredible though it may seem, even action scenes can be gratuitous. Basically a subset of scenes where nothing important happens, unnecessary action crops up when you describe every hostile encounter or dangerous situation the characters come across. If they can get through without gaining or losing anything that affects their ability to face future challenges, including information and injuries, the scene is probably gratuitous.
If you realize an unwritten scene doesn’t impact your story, it’s easy to just cut the scene or summarize what happened and move on. But scenes you’ve already written can be hard to let go of, even if they don’t serve a purpose (beware of justifications like “this scene makes the villain more evil” or “I need to show what the protagonist went through or people will wonder why he’s acting differently”. A well-written villain doesn’t need to be seen committing atrocities to be considered evil, and unless you’re planning to completely break a strong character, the readers will probably understand why he’s not himself after a traumatic experience). Here are a few tips for handling gratuitous scenes you’ve already written.
Make it relevant. Sometimes a scene just needs a sense of direction and a way to impact the plot. The earlier example of friends playing a game can make a good setting for your protagonist to do some introspection or get some information about a local legend. Sex scenes can develop a relationship or advance a character arc. Think about what your story needs and see if you can add something to your scene to fill that need, be it dialogue, a character’s thoughts, or the introduction of an object that becomes important later (the fire extinguisher your hero uses to battle the ninja doesn’t count. Important objects should be special, even if they don’t look it when they first appear).
Rewrite it. If you really need a specific scene but the version you wrote doesn’t move the story, you may need to rewrite it. That doesn’t necessarily mean starting over: switching to the point of view of a character with more information, adding a character to the scene, or reworking the dialogue can turn a generic scene into an important part of the story.
Work around it. When you’re dealing with a subject that has plot relevance but lacks the substance for its own scene, it’s usually best to hint at what happens instead of showing it. If your protagonist receives an injury that will make escape difficult during a torture session, end the scene after the damage is dealt. If your characters are about to have sex for the first time, make it clear that that’s where the scene is going, then fade to black. If you’re writing for young adults, especially, implying mature themes is a skill you’ll want to develop.
Tell, don’t show. This might seem to go against one of the cardinal rules of writing, but sometimes the nugget of information you need to share just isn’t enough to be worth an entire scene. In these cases, it’s better to summarize things for the audience instead of showing them what happened. Perhaps the characters can discuss the events of a meeting after the fact, or one of them remembers the highlights while doing something that allows their mind to wander (but beware of doing both at the same time. Unless your character is struggling to focus for some reason, conversations aren’t the time for reminiscing).
In the end, the best way to handle gratuitous scenes is to avoid writing them. They take time and energy that would be better spent on scenes that serve the story. If you aren’t sure whether a scene you’re currently writing is gratuitous or not, ask yourself if it advances the plot or develops the characters. If not, think about what you can change so that it does. If you still can’t make it relevant, you should probably cut the scene.
And please. Don’t deliberately write a scene so it can be skipped.

How To Start a Blog - Easy to Follow Guide for Beginners in 2019
How To Start a Blog - Inspiring stories of bloggers making six-figure incomes continue to excite people. The surprise doubles when it is known that most of these “rich” bloggers started off on blog writing as a hobby.
Tumblr media
Regarding thoughts on how do I start a blog or How To Start a Blog, the important step is to maintain a mental vision of the content you will write and how that can connect with a target audience and spray interest in a potential audience. The value and efficacy of blogs have been further reinforced by digital marketers who use blogs as a top tool in the promotion of products and services online. That has certainly upped curiosity on its dynamics especially the paradigm, what is a blog and how does it work. Surging online readership has catapulted blogs into unprecedented prominence and established itself as a great tool for digital marketing. Knowing the origin and evolution of blogs can be interesting. Basically, blog stands for “weblog” meaning an online journal. It all began as personal mini sites where people started writing their opinions, personal stories, observations, shared photos, and videos.
How to Start a Blog?
Now more people want to write blogs. There is obvious curiosity on how to start a blog as umpteen success stories are bombarding people kindling blogging passion and anxiety for fame and good money. That raises the quest on knowing the possible avenues of monetizing a blog. Before thinking of money, a blog must discover its audience and keep cultivating new readers. There are strategies to promote, market, and grow blogs. A leading blogger claims that his blog traffic surged 2,052 percent in just a year. Blogger Ryan Robinson shares some blog ideas on how to create a blog. He could earn thousands of dollars as passive income from blogging and also brought him closer to 2 million talented readers. In his view, the journey to be a successful blogger involves learning new things and challenging oneself. Ryan shares many tips that gained him millions of readers within a year from a meager readership. However, blogging experts also advise keeping undue expectations under check at the starting phase of blog writing. Looking for rapid results will only breed disappointment. Today’s successful blogs do reflect the high passion of people on the subject matter. They treat blogs like an investment and their returns surge as they invest more in terms of value.
Why care is needed on Domain Name?
Tumblr media
Choosing a good domain name is the starting point of blogging and is the most important task as well. There are many blog name generators currently in use. Taking the help of blog name generators is a fine idea in creating a nice blog/domain name.  But certain elements are worth considering before finalizing a domain or blog name. The domain name must match the concerned business. Make sure the domain name is chosen well. It must be catchy, crisp, easy to pronounce and can be remembered fast. Entry 11 - Before We Get Ahead of Ourselves Part 2
December 4, 2018
Dear “Diary,”
Last week was a bit of a fake out/bait and switch…. I know, and I’m sorry about that in so far as one can be sorry for something  that isn’t exactly their fault. And yes, I don’t think this is my fault because I had nothing to do with what happened other than being a target for its frequent beatings. I didn’t always think that way. But that’s something for my therapist to deal with. Or dealt with. Or will deal with.
It’s been over ten years now, and I’m still a little raw about the whole thing, like I told the most beautiful woman who just happens to work in my office. After all, there’s a lot of uncertainty about what he would think of me now or the way I’m living my life or any of the many things I will be describing in this blog… One of my high school history teachers pointed out that, “nobody wins the ‘what-if’ game,” and I think she’s right. But believing something and practicing something are two very different things. Unfortunately.
But I took a day off of work to work through my thoughts. To strip away the “what-if” from the truth. And I think I can tell this story now. Hopefully. If not, I wasted a perfectly good sick day.
First, is this relevant? I think so. I think psychology would probably agree. My experience with my dad probably shaped so much of world view. Because, you know, I was a kid when all of this was happening, and as a kid, I was trying to learn what the world was like. And well… I learned pretty quickly that the world is a place where good people die. Some die quickly, some die slowly, and some people will suffer a lot before they do. And it seemed like there were some people who were destined to be in that latter group, so their suffering was inescapable. For a while, I worried my family was like that. Maybe it was a curse that was genetically passed down. It seemed to make sense if you heavily equate illnesses with suffering.
Dad had, well, a lot of different things wrong with him. There’s several lines of diseases running in the family, and they all converged on him. The story goes that the asthma set in first. Then the kidney stones which were treated by taking most of the calcium from his diet. (I’m not a doctor, but that seem unwise.) His teeth soon fell out, and I can’t imagine his bones did much better. His knees and wrist went next. And there was some peace until his liver started acting up.
The list of afflictions is longer than my time with him, and there was a long gap in my life when I didn’t bother to listen when my grandmother/his mother tried to fill the gaps. She thought I needed to know in case those genes were lurking in me, too. Of course, she was right about that. It’s my health we’re talking about, but at the time I didn’t care.
Not that you do. It’s not relevant here except as justification for me to say that my dad’s body was a collection for ticking time bombs.
When he and my mother were married, he was fairly healthy, as healthy as he had been. With a different team of doctors, Dad had everything in balance. So marrying him didn’t seem as much of a commitment as it turned out to be, and having a child with him didn’t seem as much of a bad idea.
Not that I regret anything. I don’t regret being alive—even if I didn’t have a say in it. I don’t resent my mom for picking him as a husband. I don’t regret having him as a father. Despite everything, I had one of the best dad’s imaginable.
But to get down into the actual details,  “everything” started when I was an infant, and one of his time bombs finally went off. It was the one in the center of everything: his heart, although that one didn’t feel as him-specific as any of his other afflictions. After all, a lot of people get heart attacks, but considering how many men in his family died that way, it sounds like part of the curse.
When the surgeon came out, he was very blunt with my mom. Somehow, he wasn’t thrown off by the sight of a young mom holding an infant or that no one had come to the hospital to support the young family. Both things could be unsettling, but maybe he had seen it all before. Regardless, he managed to be truthful if not a bit cold about the whole thing. He told her that he’s not sure how my dad lived, and it certainly wasn’t anything the medical team did. After all, they’d had patients in his state before, and none of them made it.
But my dad was different. And apparently Mom cried when she was told this and held me up wrapped in my blankets, swearing up and down that I was the reason why he pulled through. My dad was a stubborn man, you see, famously so. So in her mind, for the sake of his child, he had brute forced his way back to life.
As unbelievable as it was, it certainly fit with his character, and he never denied her account. And neither can I, not with a straight face. Dad doted on me, his youngest child. Sure, we didn’t get much time with him, but the time we did get was pretty amazing. He did everything for me. He fought back so many afflictions for me.
That sounds pretty noble, doesn’t it? A father going to superhuman lengths to parent his child. I’ll admit that it was. But the problem with that narrative is that it overlooks how weak we really are. It’s not quite the folly of mankind, but it’s kind of close. After all, death always gets its due. And it was due him.
Look, what I’m trying to say is that Dad was inevitably going to die. There was going to be a time when he wasn’t going to have a say in it and then… He’d be gone.  Or he was gone.
It was heart failure, which means that the organ which almost killed him got the last laugh. It just stopped working. Simple as that. Or not as simple. But that’s not something  I want to talk about just yet.
Now where did that leave me? Wondering why I wasn’t good enough anymore. Why wasn’t I worth fighting for anymore? Why couldn’t he stick around a little longer?
In many ways, this is why I think my dad is so relevant to my love life. He was the first perceived abandonment. Not truly an abandonment, but I couldn’t be expected to know the difference at my age. Especially when I was set up to look at it a certain way.
That might be a bit vague. Or it is when I read it back over. Do you want more concrete stories? Is that going to help you understand?
Digitally yours,
Alex

85) Hashtag Strap-on. Edinburgh Fringe 2018, explored, explained,  and reviewed.
If you have a spare few days left in August, drop everything and take advantage of my top holiday tip. Take the high road or the low road, the plane or even the train (provided you’re prepared to stand for four or five hours)  and  hightail it to the Athens of the North.
The Edinburgh Fringe is truly a once in a lifetime experience. And that’s an understatement. Because once you get the bug you may very well find yourself  - like me - going  back year after year.
Never mind that the weather is often, inevitably, dreich. (Dictionary definition: Scottish dialect for ‘Bleak, miserable, dismal, cheerless, dreary.’ And pronounced and meaning almost exactly the same as  ‘dreck’  which is Yiddish for lousy. How curious.)
Worry not that the  restaurant prices are ludicrous - in a bad way.  Nor that you’ll be lucky to get a room you could swing a kitten with dwarfism in, no matter how much you’re willing to pay - ‘how much?!!!’. Nor even that the pavements are so crowded - ‘OMG, will you just get out of the fucking way?!’ - you have to walk in the road if you want to travel above  sub sloth pace.
Because, really, who gives a shit? What’s the occasional near death experience compared to the non stop adrenaline rush of the Fringe.
If there is a better legal high available, answers on a postcard please.
Do mind the quality and still feel the width.
It is said there are 3000 shows on during the Fringe and that, during August,  the population of Edinburgh doubles. Frankly when you’re there it feels like these are gross under estimates.
Every lecture hall, every  room - very possibly every broom cupboard -  in the University campus becomes a theatre. Every basement in every pub and every loft above every bar seems to have a mic and a makeshift stage. And every doorway in every street seems to lead to a stand up comedian, or a sketch show, or a play, or to music or magic or mime.
The standard length - and it rarely varies - of any performance is one hour and shows begin at 9a.m and go on to 1 or 2 the following morning. If you had the stamina  and could survive the sensory overload,  you could, theoretically, do ten shows a day. But  even if you did, you would still see less than 10% of what is available.
And the standard is astonishing. True, every so often you come across a dud but, in my experience - three years now -  for a show even to be  average it  has to be pretty damn good.
Essential Fringe primer.
Eight super-cunning tips (in no particular order).
1) If you want to know the best things to see,  find a friend who has been and ask them. LIKE ME! My reviews are below and as regular followers of my blog know, I am never wrong. Failing that, Google the  recommendations from The Guardian, the Beeb and The Scotsman.
2)  It’s useful to understand the basic ‘architecture’ of the event because there are several events going on in parallel in Edinburgh.
First, the original Edinburgh Festival festival which takes place in proper venues and is sort of proper culcher  and proper expensive.
Second, the Edinburgh Fringe which, as it name suggests, exists outside the Festival  proper, began nearly 50 years ago, has grown like the Beanstalk on steroids, and in which, shows, generally speaking, charge £10-12 for entrance.
Third, there is the Free Fringe, in which you find acts, so far as I can tell, that  are not in the actual Fringe and for which you can get a separate programme, and which, as the name suggests, don’t charge.
(There are also lots of other things going on - like the Edinburgh Book Festival - but I am not sure where they fit into the scheme of things. Might be part of the actual Festival, but not really relevant.)
3) Download and use the Edinburgh Fringe App. It’s really cleverly designed and once you’ve worked it out, it’s a great way to narrow down the insane choice, to find out what tickets are available, and offers an easy way to buy them. (I didn’t even bother getting the  hard copy brochure/guide. Who wants to schlep a telephone directory around?)
4) There are lots of shows you can take children and young teens to, but if you want to avoid a lot of  the kids, go on August 15th or afterwards. Because, as odd as it seems to us non-Scots, Scottish schools return for the autumn term in mid-August.  I am inclined to think that is the best time to go anyway. After a couple of weeks the shows will be properly grooved.
5) If you are part of a couple try it to make sure you are there on a Monday and Tuesday. There are lots of two for one offers available to all on those days.
6) Couples going for a few days or more, should get a Friend of the Fringe membership. Costs £35, and there lots of other ‘two for one’ offers available every day to FOFs.
Otherwise, to see 3 or 4 shows a day (the right level, for a serious  and hardy Fringe goer, I would say) you need to budget about £40 per day per person for entertainment before costs of  food, drinks, accom etc. Well, I never said it was cheap. ((By the way, my max fringe binge  this year was five shows in one day.)
7) Build your schedule around the plays at the Traverse theatre. The Traverse, known as one of     Britain’s leading centres of new writing, is not strictly part of the Fringe nor part of the Festival but hovers somewhere in between. HOWEVER, its programme is included in the Fringe. (No, I don’t quite understand either, but that’s what I was told.)
Anyway, notwithstanding that, they put on about half a dozen plays of about 60-90 mins length - why aren’t all plays that short? - cuts out nine tenths of the snoring - and they rotate them so they play at different times every day. Invariably brilliant stuff and probably all sold out this year. But they do get RETURNS. Call them on 0131 228 1404 to find out how to get one.
8) My strong advice is to book accommodation as far in advance in possible - like right now for next year - even if you are not 100 per cent sure you are going. You can always cancel.  I stay 20 miles out of town with friends - lucky me! - and this year, hired a car and every day drove into a Park n’ Ride (50p per day) and caught the train in for the last 5 miles. Inexpensive and just about manageable, although it took some organising. So if you have some mates in striking distance, blag a room.
If you have a ‘winibago’, you could do as a few enterprising Fringe goers do and take your leviathan and park in a Park ’n Ride. (There are quite a few situated all around the borders of Edinburgh.) Not sure I would want to stay in the Hotel Park n’ Ride but I saw people who did it.
This year’s BloggerBlagger  reviews.
I went to twenty three things in all. (22 performances of one kind or another plus 1 something else.)
These comprised, again in no particular order:
Five straight plays.
Games. A two hander based upon the story of two Jewish women at the time of the Berlin Olympics and simply stunning, as were Borders and Angels,  the last two fringe offerings written by former comedian Henry Naylor.  Henry, (who I am pleased to call a friend from the time I directed him in a Direct Line campaign 20  years ago - yes, funny old world) was  bracketed by one reviewer with Athol Fugard after the recent off-Broadway production of ‘Angels’.
His standard does not drop. ‘Games’ is gripping from first to last and subtly draws chilling parallels with the era of Trump. Commit murder to get a ticket. (You may have to.) Five Bloggerblaggerstars.
Freeman. Half a dozen actors, with no scenery, constantly switch between different roles and different centuries to produce a riveting commentary on the sins of slavery and it’s rippling effect into the present day. Wonderful performances. Great imagination. Utterly compelling. Not on any account to be missed. Five Bloggerblaggerstars.
Revenants. A more conventional piece of theatre set in 1942 in which Queen Mary (widow of George V) is portrayed as a game old bird with a touch more brain power than the Royal Family are usually said to have. Surprisingly this too, turns out to be a story about race.
Had its moments but didn’t quite do it for me.Three Bloggerblaggerstars.
Underground Railroad Game. A theatrical experience like no other I have ever experienced. Once again this is about slavery,  a  mesmerising two hander  at the Traverse presented in a constantly shifting context and style. Sometimes comedic, sometimes tragic, and sometimes explicitly  and, even for a man of the world like me, shockingly  sexual, it never stops surprising.
Two wonderful performances, particularly by Jennifer Kidwell, an actor of astonishing power. You may have to commit a murder for this one too, but well worth  a lifetime in prison  so go for it.
My joint pick of the week.Five Bloggerblaggerstars Plus.
Chihuahua. A clever one woman performance that switches between the life of a character in  an Edith Wharton novel and that of a waitress in a coffee shop in Scotland; two women who are linked in a not very defined way by chihuahuas. This was presented in a much smaller venue than the other plays I saw, and also unlike those, it was only half full.
I thought the actress and writer, whose name I didn’t write down and now can’t locate on the internet, was heroic in the face of such a small audience. I think the title might be the problem. I am sure there must be something  that would grab a passer-by or a flicker-through with  much more grip. Three and a bit BloggerBlaggerStars.
Two plays with music.
What are Girls Made Of?.  Another Traverse presentation, this one with four excellent actors, three of whom were obviously at least as gifted as musicians,  and the fourth of whom sang wonderfully. Apparently she would have danced too had she not suffered a nasty injury at some previous performance,  a misfortune that the disembodied voice of the artistic director of the Traverse told us about  at the outset, before apologising for the show’s relative shortcomings and  begging the audience’s  indulgence. She needn’t have bothered her invisible head.
Cora Bissett, the injured singer, was so assured in this tale of the sudden rise and precipitous fall of a young rock star, told  as she approaches forty, that neither she nor we missed a step. She was completely convincing in the role,  unsurprisingly in a sense, since it was her own true life story she was telling, and, of course, she wrote it. Five Bloggerblaggerstars.
Vulvarine. Much more authentically Fringe in that it was conceived and performed by five fresh faced performers with great verve and obvious talent but with the odd rough edge still to be professionally smoothed. ‘Vulverine’ is a more than creditable  attempt at a musical comedy with a sort of ironic feminist theme and has some quite decent tunes and lyrics and  more than a few genuinely funny bits.
Allie Munro, plays the lead part of boring Brony Buckle who is transformed into Superheroine Vulvarine, and she was, I thought,  terrific.  Likewise the rest of the cast with one obvious exception. But given the youthful gusto that made this show so much fun, it would seem mean to name the culprit so, should you go, you can decide for yourself who I meant. Four Bloggerblaggerstars.
Four other musical shows.
21st Century Speakeasy Andrea Carlson and the Love  Police. Andrea Carlson, who, I would guess, is comfortably north of fifty,  has a sweet voice, vaguely reminiscent of Blossom Dearie if you are old enough to know who that is or maybe Maria Muldaur if you’re a little bit younger.
Sadly she had a rather faded quality - her costume seemed a little contrived and dated - and I don’t think it was intentional. The tunes were, by and large, pleasant enough  and she and her rather elderly backing musicians performed faultlessly, but the whole thing felt slightly tragic to me, an impression not helped by the only half-filled room. Two Bloggerblaggerstars.
Jess Robinson - No filter. This was  not a name I knew but she played to a packed audience in a relatively large venue so evidently a lot of people knew what I had been missing. Jess Robinson seems to be not just a singer, but an impressionist and has, according to Wikipedia,  been on the telly quite a bit, in Dead Ringers amongst other things. (She also nearly made the final of Britain’s Got Talent, seventh series.)
Regrettably I didn’t know many of the people she was impersonating as her cast of characters didn’t include   Vera Lynn or Gracie Fields or Marie Lloyd or Mrs.Patrick Campbell. My companion on the night described it as a bit ‘low rent’ which I thought was a tad harsh, but I knew what she meant. Two and a half Bloggerblaggerstars.
Johnny Woo’s Brexit Cabaret. Not a terribly clever musical revue with nothing very original to say about you know what. I didn’t realise Johnny Woo was a drag artist and I probably wouldn’t have gone if I had.  (More fool me for not perusing the blurb closely enough.)
I have never understood the point of drag - never got panto dames or Danny LaRue - although I suppose I do  remember liking the film of La Cage Aux Folles. And in the modern world, where, happily,  everyone in enlightened countries has the opportunity  (theoretically anyway) to be what they want to be - drag seems to me to be somehow redundant. Slick but shallow is about the best I can say of this effort. Two Bloggerblaggerstars.
Frau Welt. Another drag show, though this time, I had a better excuse as it was the only show on in the place where I  was, at the time I was there, and I was determined to see something, anything. This one was full-on screaming camp and I found the first ten minutes  spectacularly unamusing. One word kept coming to mind: WHY? Then I left. Zero  Bloggerblaggerstars.
Five stand ups.
All the stand-ups I saw this year, apart from the polished old stager, Fred MacAulay - whom I caught in the second half of The Best of Scottish Comedy, which a friend smuggled me into after I had fled the horrendous Frau Welt - were just a little disappointing. None were remotely bad, but none got me guffawing uncontrollably.
They were all watchable and, every so often, amusing and applaudable but, apart  from Maisie Adams, none seemed to me to have any stardust sprinkled on them. She has a routine in  which she discusses  her own epilepsy, and at  24 - she told us that - is clearly a natural performer. But she wound  up by telling us how she had overcome her disability, and being the ancient curmudgeon that I am, I found that bit a touch self-congratulatory.

All two point six seven three ( why not?) Bloggerblaggerstars.
Maisie Adams Three and a tad Bloggerblaggerstars.
The  Best of Scottish comedy: Fred MacAulay. Four Bloggerblaggerstars.
Three other comic turns (I think you would classify them as ‘absurdist’)
Siblings. This two girl comedy duo is made up of  the  Bye sisters, who, as the ultracognoscenti know, are the real life daughters of Ruby Wax. (And Ed Bye - poor bloke, never gets a mention.) I saw them last year and thought they were hilarious, but,  as I remember it, their routine was slightly more conventional, in that there was a logical thread that you could just about follow.
This year it seemed to have a larger element of out and out bonkersness which didn’t really work for a couple of the people I had insisted accompany me. “You will LOVE them” I had said, but it was quickly evident they were just baffled. I would say (the) Siblings probably weren’t  quite as funny as last year but I really can’t be sure because all I could  think about were the fingers of blame that would be jabbed at me afterwards.“You said we’d love them.Love WHAT?”
Three Bloggerblaggerstars. (My friends are superannuated old gits, so what would they know.)
The Kagools. Another female duo, Aussies Claire Ford and Nicky Wilkinson, who have a completely word-free act that is simply ingenious. They interact with a film of themselves  so that they are live on stage one moment and the next vanishing behind the screen to reappear in the film. It is clearly rehearsed to the millisecond because the timing is absolutely perfect - a moving arm  is  half live and half on film at one point, seemingly without a join.
The really impressive thing though is that,  despite the precision, it all seems completely spontaneous. The technique never gets in the way of the comedy and The Kagools are simultaneously  wonderfully silly and completely charming. An absolute delight, they are the other half of my joint pick of the week. Five Bloggerblaggerstars Plus.
Claire Sullivan, I wish I owned a hotel for dogs. Another Aussie, Claire takes absurdist comedy to new heights - or to new records of excess in whichever dimension absurdism exists. Think Vic and Bob on acid. And then some. Quite honestly, I didn’t have the faintest idea what was going on at any time, but she has a winning way which can’t but help force a smile. I did like her but I really don’t know why. Two and a half Bloggerblaggerstars.
One acrobaticky sort of show.
360 All Stars.  Five blokes in baseball caps worn at various angles doing tricks on BMX’s and with basketballs and  breakdancing mentally and doing somersaults and all that sort of thing. Probably great for the ten and unders and not too bad for the rest of us. But I wouldn’t be falling over myself to go again. Seen better Circusy things at the Fringe. Two and a half Bloggerblaggerstars.
Two ‘well known names’ shows.
Maureen Lipman. As those with knowledge of my murky advertising past  will know, Maureen and I go a long way back, so in aiming for proper objectivity, I might have to have be  more critical than I normally would be. In which case, she was even better than I thought, and that was very, very good indeed.
Her show was a splendid mixture, of comedy monologues, jolly good jokes and some excellent music supplied by Jackie Dankworth (Cleo and Johnny’s daughter I assume),  a fine pianist and, extraordinarily, on guitar, Harry Shearer, legendary Simpsons’ voice and co-writer and co-star of Spinal Tap.
At 72 - don’t think I’m giving away secrets there -  and now in Coronation Street, Maureen has, despite achieving national treasure status,  most definitely not run out of creative steam.  Sadly you can’t get tickets for this show no matter who you kill, because her run has  finished. Five Bloggerblaggerstars.
Nina Conti. *And now, at last, to the explanation of  ‘hashtag strap-on’. Nina Conti’s show began with another pre-performance announcement, this time to tell us that there was a Tourettes sufferer in the audience and to ask for our understanding. She turned out to be sitting a few rows behind my  seat and began to randomly pepper the show with lots of very audible ‘biscuits’ and suchlike. I can’t say this wasn’t slightly off-putting while at the same time provoking an occasionally guilty giggle, and it would have been a fearsome challenge for most performers.
Fortunately much of Nina Conti’s incredibly clever ventriloquist’s act -  I was in the front row and never saw her lips move once -  is ad-libbed and she somehow contrived  to incorporate one or two of the Tourettisms into the show, notably ‘tortoises’. (Really can’t explain but it was both utterly surreal and bloody funny.) The highpoint came when Nina, who uses volunteers from the audience as her dummies by fitting  pigs’ masks on their faces, and operating the lips with a hand control, was fiddling about with one of the velcro ties that holds each mask in place. ‘Hashtag Strap-On’ shouted out the Tourettes lady and  almost literally stopped the show. Five Bloggerblaggerstars.
One participation game-show (no audience)
Werewolves. A parlour game with twenty participants paying a tenner each, played at midnight every night,  masterminded by an Australian (they’re everywhere in Edinburgh) called Nick who sports a long beard, a topper and full Edwardian costume including an ankle length fur coat that must be a fraction too warm even in a Scottish summer.
The rules are a bit too complex to explain but think of it as a sort of  super de luxe, infinitely wittier version of the game where you wink at people to kill them. I warn you. It is addictive. Having made my debut last year, I played three times last week- meaning I was still up at two on three mornings! - and loved it. (Also a winner - twice! Not that I’m one to brag.) Totally recommended.

Who, What, Where, When, Why, How: A Social Media Primer
The number of followers on your company’s social media profiles is low. Double-digits, if that. Each post gets just a comment or two—barely enough to call it customer engagement. The only shares are from the company’s other profiles—none of them organic. To help fix this, let’s take a look at the what, why, how, when, and even the who of blogging for niches in order to attract customers for engagement and eventual conversion.
What to start with
Before answering any of the other questions, you need to have a base foundation for social media, and where links on social media point back to.
Having a blog is the most important part of starting down the road to customer engagement. Regardless of your company’s niche, there is always news affecting your company, your niche, or your customers—perfect fodder for a blog post.
The key is showing your expertise on the field to impress your potential clients, and to give them valuable information. You can do this by writing about news in your niche, market trends, other new products to impress potential clients, and by providing valuable information.
Have an opinion on the news? That’s perfect for a blog post. For more on this, see points 2 and 3.
Why bother posting?
The time stamps on your posts show gaps of weeks and even months. The front page of the blog is often stagnant—the same image dominating the screen. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Collat School of Business notes business owners don’t publish blogs or post to social media because they are just too busy. Time is money, and they are afraid it will take too much time to develop and write a post.
But not posting means not tapping into a significant portion of the population. In a study conducted earlier this year, 68 percent of adults were found to have a social media account, and 79 percent of those had a Facebook account.
Even those 65 and older are using social media, with 62 percent using Facebook—up 14 points from 2015. A third of all adults use Instagram. Meanwhile, companies that used social media frequently in 2015 had 434 percent more indexed pages on Google than those that eschewed posting.
So if you want your company to be found in a Google search, having indexed pages that provide relevant and insightful information is a great way to rise in rankings.
Who is Vilfredo Pareto?
Here’s a post about my new product.
Did you know I offer this service for my customers?
I wrote a press release about my fancy new product!
If your blog topics read like any of those, you are posting far too many self-promotional blogs.
While you are posting often, the content is doing more to harm your brand, and likely driving frustrated readers away as they see right through your promotional tactics.
Your posts should follow Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto’s Principle of 80/20. It’s applicable to many contexts.
Pareto found that 80 percent of Italy was owned by 20 percent of the population in the late 1800s, and 20 percent of peapods in his garden had 80 percent of the peas.
In social media, it can be the proportion of non-promotional to self-promotional posts. The 80 percent should focus on engaging your audience, inviting comments, offering insight and information, and overall should encourage shares, thus spreading your company name.
Some real-world examples
Imagine you run the blog and social media for a small real estate office. You want to link to valuable content that your readers will find helpful, such as a visual guide to what fits in a storage unit.
By writing a post about storage, and linking to that guide, you provide information a family moving could need. Since their friends might find it useful, they post it to Facebook.
Another site might try to provide comprehensive information on investing in real estate, to try to answer any question a customer might have.
The key takeaway is to post something interesting or something a potential customer can learn from. Eager to share what they have learned, they will in turn post on social media. Moz, a well-known search engine optimization company, dubbed this the “BuzzFeed Approach.”
How the pros do it
Here’s another real-world example, this time from a major corporation: Square, maker of point-of-sale machines, doesn’t just post about their machines. One post offers advice about having tough conversations with employees and doesn’t mention their product at all.
The goal is to relate whatever you post to your niche. Square posts not just about credit card studies, but how to manage a company. Their users are offered actionable advice, which they can in turn share. This works as an indirect promotion, encouraging engagement with those that have used the tips—whether they were successful or not, opening up a conversation.
Going back to Pareto, you still have the remaining 20 percent of posts. Through those, you can directly promote your product, service, coupon, or event. Use these posts to link to other parts of your site and help increase search engine optimization.
A company that sells phones for businesses, for example, might write a blog post on what phones are best for different sizes of conference rooms, linking to product pages from the blog. It’s still helpful information for business owners and is shareable, but it also promotes their products.
How to beat writer’s block
You’re convinced. You’re ready to sit down and write a blog, but don’t have a solid idea of what you want to write about.
You remember a funny quote that relates to your niche, and you have a few pieces of advice to share. But you want something more, something that has a high chance of engaging readers and drawing more in. Dig deep: what do your current followers already like to share?
Rand Fishkin from Moz suggests using social media to research customer needs or profiles. This is how you fuel ideas for content creation, and this can also reveal patterns in customers. What trends do they follow? Are your customers more inclined to follow one media outlet over another, or use certain products?
Leverage this information to create content catered towards those groups. Focusing on what they already respond positively to will increase chances of them sharing the content. Friends then see the content, and in turn, share, creating a chain of shares and thus accomplishing your goal.
Where to post
You have your content idea ready to go, based on research on customers and your niche. The next part of posting is knowing the type of web content your audience wants; in other words, where to post your content.
Is your content best suited for a text post on your blog?
An infographic posted to Twitter?
A longer how-to video on YouTube?
A fun, short video on Instagram?
If you weren’t able to find this in your previous research, go back and do more. Or, take a look at successful competitors: what type of media are they posting? Build upon their idea, improve upon their content with your own and watch as readers switch to your better content.
It’s time for another example of a major company. Red Bull drinkers enjoy images and videos of extreme sports, like this video on Instagram that combines surfing, zip lining, and BASE jumping. It’s fun, unusual, new, and most importantly, it’s a video instead of an image, which would not capture the audience and convey the craziness of the stunt. That post, only a week old as of this writing, has nearly a million views and almost 6,000 comments—and the Red Bull logo is nowhere to be seen.
When to post for maximum engagement
The time of day you post your content can have a significant impact on engagement.
According to SEO guru Neil Patel’s research, posting content onspecific times via specific social media platforms results in more shares and higher traffic back to your site (likely your blog).
He also found that:
Fortune 500 companies posting videos on Instagram during local working hours gained an average of 22.5 per 1,000 followers interacting with the videos.
After working hours, the number jumped to 33.4.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise—people are usually more active on social media when they are at home rather than while at work.
Using Patel’s research, let’s look at a specific niche: fashion. A clothing-related pin on Pinterest around 3 p.m. on Fridays results in the best engagement. This is before the weekend begins, but there’s still enough time to plan an outfit for a Friday night date.
At a 10,000-foot view, nearly all industries see more shares and comments on Facebook posts that go live near the end of the week.
Patel performed an experiment, following his own advice, specifically timing posts to his blog.
The result: a 39 percent increase in web traffic. Programs such as Buffer or Hootsuite allow you to time your posts like Patel, creating a schedule and automatically posting.
Key Takeaways
So, answering the what, when, why, how—and even who—does significantly improve your social media presence. It can also improve engagement and, in time, your conversions.
You’ll earn followers, each awaiting your next informative post, with posts about your services or product. You’ll see increased comments on your blogs, customers taking part in contests, or volunteering their own stories and advice, and your business will grow.
