no clue when i'll get back to my groundhog au but i just remembered something and wanted to share so beware: spoilers for that story.

during one of the many runs, somewhere near the end of it all, the party finds out mike's been possessed by the mind flayer and nancy and the lot decide to sauna mike. of course, his possession is not like that of biIly or will in s2 or the flayed (he's not being controlled), but the heat they subject him to has a similar effect and he feels like he's dying and he's crying and begging for them to please just let him explain but it's no use; nancy keeps cranking up the heat because she's determined to kill the thing that killed barb, and no one will listen to him since "it's not really mike" and "he can't be trusted".

so he curls up into a ball on the floor, feeling lonelier and sadder than ever, and distractedly starts tapping on the door with shattered fingernails, quietly explaining his situation in morse code with the hope that someone will listen and free him of this hell...

and that's when he hears a response. a question, hesitantly tapped into the other side of the door by no other than will (the only one who'd been asking for mike's release). so they talk and mike explains everything and will doesn't even let him finish before he swings the door open and finally saves him from burning alive. and of course, the others freak out and try to stop them but will isn't having it any more and he defends mike and run away together for a bit.

(and then the bell strikes and tragedy happens and a new cycle beings but at least mike got to experience what it was like for someone to take care of him for once)

"Mike," Dustin interrupted, equal measures of concern and desperation in his voice. His eyes were wide, sparking with the tears he'd shed from watching Will— "You need to pay attention," Dustin declared, determined voice successfully breaking Mike's inner monologue.

And Mike couldn't understand what that was supposed to mean, because he was.

But Dustin knew him too well. He was quick to clarify, the urgency in his words somehow registering in the mess that was Mike's broken mind. "You need to pay attention to everything that happens around you. Every movement, every detail, every word you hear," he instructed. "You need to remember everything, and you need to make us believe you. That's the only way you can stop this and get to tomorrow."

He paused; and then—

"The only way you can save Will."
