Playing Devil's Advocate - An unnecessarily aggressive informal essay written by someone who doesn't like Diavolo

I wanted to take a moment to rant about something that's been bothering me since I first played Obey Me in 2020-Specifically something pretty important to the build up to the shitshow that is lesson 16. I've ranted to friends in dms about this topic a lot so I figured it was about time I actually wrote it all down properly. I’ve actually mentioned this as a joke before here on tumblr but now everyone gets the rant no one asked for.

Side note before I continue: I'm not quite at Lesson 16 yet in my Obey Me replay so a few details may be off/I may remember some things wrong. I'm 90% sure my point still stands either way but if anything shifts my mind at all as I replay I might return to this and clarify things.

Considering there’s four seasons of Obey Me, 11(?) lessons on Nightbringer which has only been out for like-a month, and people still want more-I don’t think I have to recap everything but I’m still going to do my best for the sake of proving my point. Pretty much everything in season one (I have admittedly never even finished season 2 so this is just going to be strictly up to lesson 16 and maybe mentions of a few minor things after-Nightbringer is also being ignored for this) is caused directly by the trauma the brothers struggle with from the war. Lilith fell in love with a human, who if I remember correctly, grew sick and was on death's bed. In her grief and denial, she fed her lover food from the celestial realm to heal them-breaking the rules in the process and causing Lucifer to lead the brothers into a war for her sake. During the war, Beelzebub had a moment where he had to choose between saving Belphegor’s life or Lilith’s, and he ended up saving Belphegor’s. Beelzebub blames himself for this and thinks Belphegor does as well, while Belphegor turned his anger towards her lover and humans as a whole.

God knows how many years later, when Diavolo brings up his plan for the exchange program, Belphegor throws what I would consider a temper tantrum. He threatens-key word there is threatens-to go to the human realm and kill all the humans as he still blames them for the death of his beloved sister. And i'm not saying I condone this at all-like Jesus Christ man you all need some serious therapy and maybe a pizza night with a movie and ice cream-but all Belphegor even gets the chance to do is throw a tantrum and threaten to commit murder before he’s locked up in the attic by Lucifer to prevent Diavolo from locking him up properly. First of all, I feel like there was a much better way to go about that entire situation instead of leaving him alone to fester and lying to everyone, but we’re not here to judge Lucifer we’re here to prove how Diavolo’s a fucking hypocrite so thats a rant for another day.

Skip to the first few lessons-the player gets in contact with Belphegor, starts making pacts with the brothers in an attempt to help him, growing close to each brother and going through each arc, yada yada-until shit hits the fan. Belphegor manages to seemingly magically escape in a turn of events that I will never fully understand and the truth behind Belphegor being a “human world exchange student” is revealed very, very bluntly. Beelzebub, Mc, and a currently seemingly harmless Belphegor run off to Purgatory Hall to get out of the House of Lamentation-understandable considering the secret reveal. This doesn’t last long however, as Diavolo and Barbatos quickly come and arrest Belphegor on counts of treason and everything comes spiraling to the grand reveal.

Which brings me to my entire point. I’m not upset that Belphegor gets arrested, it’s extremely reasonable considering he was threatening to kill off an entire fucking species because one non-immortal human happened to fall in love with his sister. That’s. Not ok. Get some therapy man. No, what bugs me in this entire situation is Diavolo-specifically the hypocrisy. If we look back at previous lessons, Belphegor really should’ve only gotten a slap on his wrist and maybe some time out. House arrest or something. Let’s assume previous lessons actually do show Diavolo’s logic and by extent, Devildom law-Belphegor shouldn’t be arrested. Period. After the time travel bullshit, though, is another story but I’ll mention that later on.

Belphegor’s threat would’ve ruined the entire exchange program, sure-but so would’ve so many interactions in the series, some actually being worse than Belphegor’s threat. In the first few lessons alone, Mammon threatens to eat us multiple times and puts us in direct danger by leaving us unattended at RAD before we know how to protect ourselves, Lucifer passive aggressively threatens our lives multiple times, and Leviathan straight up attacks us and most definitely would’ve killed us had Lucifer not stepped in. All before we even meet Belphegor. Purely from memory as I’m still replaying Asmodeus’ arc (Nightbringer distracted me for a while and I forgot I had the original game on my phone), I’m 90% sure that Beelzebub is the only demon brother to not outright threaten your life at some point. Love that for him.

Then of course you have the situation with the missing chihuahua-which, while yes, is on a much smaller scale than Belphegor’s threat, I feel is far more personal and far more detrimental to the exchange program-Since 1) Lucifer is far more powerful than Belphegor and has far more say in the Devildom, and, 2) effects not only two exchange students that are currently actively in the program, but one of them is a literal child. That’s not even mentioning the fact that he was also threatening his own brother-less related to the exchange program but still really fucked up. But Lucifer doesn’t get arrested and locked up-Diavolo gives him a slap on the wrist and a comforting conversation saying he understood why he casually tried to kill 3 people in a murderous rage. One of which being one of the people he was trying to protect in the first place?

I’m sorry Lord Diavolo, sir, but being gay for the pretty fallen angel is not an excuse to be a fucking hypocrite.

What makes me more frustrated is that this isn’t even a hard fix from a writer's perspective. I’m not saying I’m more talented than the people who do this shit for a living-I’m a 17 year old in high school who writes found family fanfics and is obsessed with enemies to lovers-but it still feels like an easy fix. Have Belphegor actually kill someone. Have Lucifer find him spiraling while covered in blood and laughing and talking about how he was going to wipe out the entire species. Have him say he’s avenging Lilith or something of that sort-show his instability and grief in a way that makes his arrest actually make sense while still giving room to forgive him because the player can see how broken he is. Maybe that’s a bit too dark but he quite literally strangles the player to death. I don't think having a proper murder is too much to ask for. Just something to give Diavolo an actual reason for arresting him.

Going back to canon though, when Belphegor actually commits a crime, he’s let free and is able to live in the same house as the person he just murdered with no repercussions. I know there’s all this shit about being connected to Lilith-the entire thing makes me very uncomfortable, it’s the whole reason why I’ve been rewriting certain scenes with my personal mc-but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t attack us again at any moment. We’re still human, we’re still the species he blames for his sister's death-being related to her reincarnation does nothing to change that fact. It already makes me deeply uncomfortable how quickly he’s forgiven and cuddles up to us. If he’s going to be arrested it should be after the murder, not before it. None of this makes sense to me. Diavolo’s logic makes no fucking sense.

Lesson 16 could’ve been avoided entirely if Belphegor got the same biased treatment as Lucifer and/or was given the ability to grow to trust humans healthily alongside Mc and some supervision.

Oh, thank goodness Marjo can safely compete. It would have been devastating for them to have waited this long for a Worlds debut and then have to miss a home event. On the subject of the rhythm dance...mashing rhythms together didn't always work back in the days of the short dance. The 2011 Tango/Waltzes were not good and most of the 2013 Polka/Waltzes weren't much better. Not all rhythms go together as well as cha cha/rumba and quickstep/foxtrot because those two pairings literally share the same rhythms but at different speeds! But I thought they were really getting somewhere with the themes at the end of the last quad. Broadway with Finnstep and Street with Midnight Blues allowed for a range of directions and varied music choices while still retaining key point requirements. Sure some of the choices were tacky but it's ice dance, tacky is unavoidable. But there were also many excellent, memorable, diverse, cohesive programs. The pattern matched well with the theme. But jamming a Samba into an 80s theme was never going to work because there's no correlation between the two. They could've just keep going in the same vein as last quad...themes like 'movies' paired with the Golden Waltz (it would allow everything from Fred & Ginger to Mary Poppins to La La Land to Batman to Harry Potter to Sweeney Todd to The Godfather... and that's just off the top of my head, it's hard to find a movie soundtrack that DOESN'T have a waltz), '21st century' with the Ravensburger Waltz (tons of modern pop and soft rock is written in waltz timing), 'folk' or 'national dance of the country you represent' with Yankee Polka would be great fun. That way teams still learn compulsories but audiences wouldn't have to sit through 3 hours of everyone dancing like they're in Vienna in 1889 to the same Blue Danube waltz music. Something authentic like the Kerrs' Scottish dance would be much more likely to go viral today than people trying to pop and lock to Turn Down For What. The obvious answer to the question of how to expand dance outside the narrow range of ballroom/latin seems to me to be...create more compulsories? Hire Scott and Madison and Marie France and Carol Lane and Barbara Fuser-Poli to create jazz/urban/disco/rock/contemporary patterns that could then far more easily be paired with a theme like 80s.

Sorry for the very long rant! It's just frustrating to me that in 2020-2022 they seemed to finally hit on the perfect balance of a RD that combined the more audience friendly aspects of the old original dances with the technical requirements necessary for credibility under IJS while maintaining the foundations of the sport with the pattern, and after cracking the code they're ditching it instead of expanding it. I don't get it.

But there is something different about you. A few months ago, Yoongi was walking through the streets, and you were walking towards him. Usually, people would just walk past by him without any regard while you... You had walked around him as if you saw him.

That event sparked his curiosity ever since. But you had disappeared out of his sight among the crowd. He spent months searching for you afterwards, and he finally found you a month ago.

A grin appeared on his face instantly when he spotted you. However, just as he took the first step, the sudden thought of you actually not being able to see him made him hesitant. And just like that, his greatest fear had his hope dwindling. So, he opted to watch you from afar instead or make himself truly invisible if he's near you.

Quietly, he floats on air as you walk to an empty park, sitting down on the bench. He stops on one of the trees behind you, curiously gazing down at your sketchbook on which you seem to be drawing a person. And he spends his time observing you until the first snow of the season falls within his sight.

You seem to notice it as well as you stop drawing and look up at the sky.

It's quiet for a moment, in a comfortable way; Yoongi climbs down the tree standing beside the bench and makes more snowflakes when he sees your eyes lighting up.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" you breathe out, breaking the silence.

You took a deep breath before taking a second sip of your drink. The bartender has turned your larger than normal tip into a much larger than normal pour of vodka and you weren’t sure his response was entirely proportional, meaning the drink had burned the entire length of your throat. Your momma didn’t raise a quitter though, so you drank on anyway.

“Baby, come meet Landy.”

Nate’s hand was pressed against the small of your back as he caught your attention. He had a hand hovering over you, on the small of your back, your hip, an arm across your shoulder, the entire night. He was showing you off all night, letting you take center stage at the kick off to the season party, also your first party as his girlfriend. You were smart, funny and your favorite little black dress was doing wonders for your confidence tonight. You were charming every coach, teammate, and Avalanche executive in your path. Nate wasn’t the least bit surprised. He knew everyone would love you and told you in the car on the way over, in the kitchen before you left, the second after he’d invited you to come.

“Oh, he’s finally unattached?” you asked with a raise of your eyebrows.

His captain had been occupied all night, but Nate was desperate for you to meet him. You knew Gabe was important to him, so you took another sip of your too strong drink, wincing a little at the taste.

“Bad drink?” he asked you, catching your micro-expression out of the corner of his eye.

“Too strong,” you admitted with a sigh, “but momma didn’t raise no quitter.”

Nate laughed, letting his large hand slide from the small of your back to your side which allowed him to pull you against him for a quick squeeze. He pressed a lazy kiss to the side of your head as he laughed.

“But my momma raised me,” he reached over and plucked the glass from your hand with his free one, “to be a gentleman. A gentleman doesn’t let a lady drink a bad drink.”

He took a sip of it, lips pulling back in disgust at the taste. You watched as he made his peace with the drink, shrugging before going back for another sip.

“It’s bad,” he nodded softly in agreement with what you’d informed him earlier. “But doable. Let’s get you a different one before we bug Landy, okay?”

You let him guide him over to the bar, large hand spanning across your back as he did. The heat from the palm of his hand felt like it was burning through your dress and into your skin below, lighting a fire within you. Passion had never been something you and Nate had lacked together. He ordered you a drink, something you would’ve verbally undressed your last boyfriend for angrily, but the way Nate did it made you want to undress him after this event was over.

You couldn’t stop yourself from letting your eyes rake over your boyfriend as you waited for your new drink, taking him in. Nate was leaned against the bar, an elbow resting on the dark wood as he waited. He was wearing an absolutely impeccable blue gray suit, with a black button up underneath. He’d chosen to forgo a tie, a decision you were slightly bitter about since you loved pulling him in by his tie, but you had to admit, he was always dressed perfectly for events like this. Your eyes trailed down, seeing how the fabric fit his strong arms, pulling and tensing when he shifted to grab his glass again. Your breath hitched in your throat as you watched his hand wrap around the cold glass as he brought it up to his lips. Nate’s large hand enveloped the glass, dwarfing it as his fingers wrapped around the condensation covered glass. It made you swallow hard as your mind wandered to other times those hand were wrapped around you, long fingers in you, making you scream his name. If you played your cards right, he’d probably make it happen again tonight. Seeing you fall apart for him and then carefully putting you back together again after with soft kisses and touches was one of his absolute favorite things to do. He’d do it every day if he could.

“See something you like?”

Nate cocked an eyebrow at you as he asked his question, but made no effort to hide how his eyes travelled up and down the length of your body, hovering at his favorite parts, the curve of your chest, the way your hips filled out in that dress. That dress was going to kill him, but damn was it going to be a nice way to go.

“I hope you do,” he cut in before you could respond, “because I see something I’m dying to get my hands on as soon as possible.”

You swallowed hard, trying to pull your thoughts out of path they’d begun to speed down as your legs unconsciously crossed, desperate for friction. At least you knew Nate was feeling the same way you were. That knowledge carried you through the rest of the evening. You were sure Nate’s captain and everyone else you met were wonderful, but you couldn’t remember a single thing about any of them. Your mind was focused on one thing and one thing only, getting Nate back home with his hands all over you.

When you walked out into the cool September air, you breathed in deeply, feeling relief that Nate had finally found an opening to escape the party that wouldn’t be seen as rude. Nate had an arm around you, large hand spanning across your hip as he guided you to the car. You were usually grateful Nate hired a car for events like this, but tonight you wished one of you had driven because then you could speak your mind as loudly as you wanted. You had to settle for whispering into his ear after climbing into the backseat.

“You look so good tonight,” you whispered in his ear, letting your lips graze his skin as you spoke as your fingers ran through the hair at the back of his neck.

Nate sucked in a breath through his teeth. He’d never made any effort to hide how he felt about you, how easily you turned him on, and he wasn’t about to start tonight. One of his hands slid under the hem of your dress and gently started to rub up and down your thigh, staying away from where you wanted him and where he wanted to touch. You were his and he wasn’t about to give the driver a show Nate paid him to attend.
