The campfire flames flickered as the wood slowly burnt away. Each and every incarnations dreams slowly filled the dancing trees in the forest. Sleep is one of the most scarcest thing you could get when you are on an adventure like theirs.

Alas, the veteran couldn’t bring himself to close his eyes. Each and every dream felt too real to shake off, maybe it was real. What if he is in a dream right now? His mind started to wander. He should have brought her with him. He shouldn’t have abandoned her. He can’t forget her, he made a promise. All of this, was his fault.

Boots slowly crunched closer and closer to the boy. Legend quickly blew some strands of pink out of his face and readied his sword. He will not abandon her again. He will not.

“Hey, mind if I sit?” A warm voice filled the cold, sleeping woods.

“Leave me alone, old man.” The veteran grumbled, “You should be sleeping anyway.”

“Can’t. Not if one of my boys are awake and clearly suffering.”

Legend’s breath hitched. He’d been caught. No, caught wasn’t the correct word. He wasn’t as strong as they all thought he was. He’s supposed to carry the entire world.

He couldn’t even carry the grief of a made up girl. Or was she a real girl? Only she and Hylia know.

“I left her. I left her to die.” Suddenly, all that Legend was carrying, felt too heavy. “I left her to f*cking die.” Sobs wracked the seasoned hero’s body. He couldn’t do this anymore. He failed her. What kind of hero does that?

A warm embrace enveloped the troubled hero.

“I know, son. I know.”

Time sat himself down. Sleeping can wait for a few more minutes.

what do you think of the tkachuk vs mcdavid "face of the nhl" debate?

since people magazine called tkachuk the "face of the nhl" butthurt hockey men are saying that will never be true because mcdavid is the face of the nhl. the way i see it, mcdavid might be the best player but he has the personality of beige wallpaper and tkachuk might be a rat but seems to have a fun personality

also, who do you think the nhl should market more to be the "face"? boring but the best players in the world (mcdavid, crosby, mckinnon etc) or talented fun personality guys (tkachuk, pasta, zegres etc)

I see it the same as you do.

No one can deny that McDavid is currently and will continue to be the best NHL forward - it is something every single person who gets into the world of ice hockey and consequently even the world of the NHL grasps and accepts as a fact.

However, just as you have said Connor has a personality of beige wallpaper (I love that term so much by the way). You see it every single time he is asked to do any sort of promotional content during the All-Star Week, before the season shooting, or during it. The outcome of that is always something you can hardly sell to his fans, who are die-hard supporters of the cult of "McJesus" - even those people oftentimes consider it as unwatchable - so now imagine what would people, who have no idea what NHL is, say if McDavid really was the face and his content would be the one, with which would the league be trying to expand its fanbase.

It's not that I blame him for being socially awkward, everyone has a different sort of personality and not everyone is born as a social butterfly with an undeniable charm, but the NHL and those fans who passionately defend his "face of the league" title need to realize that being the best player and the most marketable player thus the face of the league are two completely different roles and McDavid can play only the first one. Just like Crosby.

Simultaneously, you have to take into consideration that they are looking for primarily an American face of the league - that's market where they are competing with other big and more known leagues like NFL, NBA, and so on, you don't need that much promotion in Canada where it is a national sport or in Europe where you could definitely find many more fans but where you have the huge disadvantage of the time difference so you will never have thousands of Europeans watching the games at 2 AM when they have to go to work the next day. If you use a Canadian or European player as the face of the league, it won't register as big of a success as you would love to. This is the USA we are talking about, the most ridiculously patriotic country I know, they want an American face or else they won't support it.

That's why the league is pushing guys like Matthew Tkachuk or Auston Matthews (or at times even Zegras) because they are both players with actual talent but also a big marketability aspect and mainly with American passports.

Naturally, there are players who would be even bigger internet sensations if they were American - look at David Pastrnak, that man has been born a showman and a great player on top of that, he would absolutely kill the face of the league game if he wasn't from the Czech Republic and so would Mitch Marner if he wasn't Canadian, hell even Brad Marchand has an elite personality or Jaromir Jagr if he once again wasn't Czech. To this day Jagr is the most beloved player from the big guys (Gretzky, Lemieux, Ovechkin...) because he was and still is a f*cking comedian on top of being an ice hockey legend.

God Mode

This is the last thing i'm going to post about episode five of Ahsoka, i promise. It just kind of f*cked my whole perception of the entire franchise, all the way up. Never mind the fact that the Jedi Council was legit grooming child soldiers to send them off to the front lines of a war over f*cking tariff disputes, or the fact that Maul got absolutely bodied by a whole ass teenager, there is a fully realized Anakin Skywalker just hanging out in the World Between Worlds. I'm not talking Clone Wars Anakin who got quadriplegic'd by old man Ben, or the hulking, cyborg, menace of an attack dog for the Galactic Empire, but a full potential Anakin Skywalker. An Anakin who has mastered the Force to the point he has transcended even the ability to project as a Force Ghost. An Ankin that somehow found his way into The World Between Worlds with no maps or clues. An Anakin fully at peace with who is, who he was, and who he can be. The truest version of The Chosen One legend, given form.

The quiet feats he demonstrated during that little training session with Ahsoka, were ridiculous. This wasn't a Force Ghost because he physically fought Ahsoka with a perfectly mastered Form Five. Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker was considered one of, if not the best, Jedi Duelist in history, and even that from couldn't master Form Five. This wasn't a memory because he referenced the sh*t Luke said to him during his duel, and inevitable defeat, on the Death Star II. “I won't fight you”, Ahsoka said. “I've heard that before”, Anankin replied. This was Grand Master Anakin Skywalker and he taught Ahsoka a real lesson, forcing her evolution into Ahsoka the goddamn White. During this process, he flitted between himself and his Vader form, like it was nothing. Light and Dark at the drop of a hat but, when Vader finally clashed with Ahsoka, it was Anakin's face he wore. I'm talking full power Darth Vader, without the cybernetic handicaps. Sh*t was glorious to see. He was vicious, brutal, but controlled. The anger was there but it was focused. This was Vader perfected but used for a purpose. This Vader was truly the Sith Lord he was under that armor, but lacked the self-loathing. This Vader was more a tool used to show Ahsoka that she, too, can fall. That it was a choice. That she could overcome even the greatest evil, ever, in her mind; Her fallen master, Darth Vader. But those are just glimpses of Anakin's power. This man literally reshaped The World Between Worlds on a whim.

Anakin motherf*cking Skywalker literally warped an entire reality, just to train his Padawan one last time. He took this adult Ahsoka, and reverted her back to a teenage form. He used her memories to, not only reshape the landscape, but draw in actual people she remembered as tangible representations from that time. F*cking Rex was in the Clone Wars flashback, man, in full Clone Trooper armor. Anakin did that through sheer Force of will. Do you have any idea how f*cking powerful in the Force you have to be to do something like that? Just getting to the World Between Worlds is a feat but Anakin can shape it like clay. Not even the Father, The Daughter, and The Son could do that sh*t and Anakin was shown to be stronger than all of them when he was still just a Jedi Knight. The only other entity that i think can come close to this level of power is Abeloth from Legends and she was a f*cking problem that Grand Master Luke Skywalker barely solved. I mean, this version of Anakin Skywalker physically pulled Ahsoka into The World Between Worlds right before she crashed into that sea. That, alone, is a big ass "The f*ck?"

What does Force Entity Anakin Skywalker mean for the rest of the franchise? This thing is bound by nothing, limited by nothing. He exists at the crossroads of all time, all reality. He can shape this core existance into anything he desires and carries a wisdom that only someone who has mastered the Force fully, can even begin to understand. In canon, that's just The Father, i think. In legends, that's just Luke, if I'm not mistaken. Like, he's stronger than the f*cking Whills, man. But, as broken as Anakin has become, that presents a problem for everything which comes after this episode. The sequels, specifically.

Grand Master Anakin Skywalker is the caretaker for the Star Wars version of a Hyperbolic Time Chamber. He is some sort of extra-physical representation of true Force balance. He can physically pull anyone he wants into this Room of Spirit and Time to train them. He literally gifted Ahsoka all the knowledge he possessed, leveling up her Force abilities like they were nothing, and she was already technically stronger than Obi-Wan before that point. Even Palpatine understood that Force Potential alone, was only a part of true strength. That man spent years of his life, studying under one of the most pragmatic Sith to ever live. This version of Anakin has access to so much more of that knowledge, plus his near infinite potential with the Force. That fleeting thought, on it's own, it's just staggering. If Anakin can do that much, if he is some limitless Force God now, how does he let Poppa Paps manipulate his grandson into being just another tool? How the f*ck does Anakin Skywalker, the man who sent the entire galaxy into a murderous, imperial, dark age over the death of his wife, let his own, personal, abuser, do the exact same sh*t to his grandson? How does he not intervene with Luke during his exile? How do these narratives even work anymore now that Grand Master Anakin Skywalker, Keeper of The World Between Worlds, exists?

Reason: I WAS thinking Lancer because of his kick, but honestly he could work as a Saberface. Also a lot of Sabers have that ‘thing’ with a fated journey and internal struggle-but-noble-in-heart going on, so it clicks better for me.

Class: Rider

Reason: Initially I imagined them as a Caster, but with the car being a key part of their gimmick and aesthetic as a hero, I think Rider would be the better fit for them.

Reason: Initially I thought Rider, since his schtick is flying, so while it's not a 'vehicle' persay I think it still can apply to him. However, a friend of mine pointed out that Archer could work for him better since his attacks are very ranged-based.

UNPOPULAR OPINION:

I think it'd be anticlimactic if Sasha won the crown in the finale.

Don't get me wrong, I love Sasha and she's absolutely incredible and polished (like wbk we all saw the season and even when she was announced it was a guarantee that she'd make it far) but that's exactly why I want Anetra to win.

Sasha had established herself a legend outside of Drag Race, and on the show she did the same for the fans. There was no doubt that she's an all-round drag superstar. Which is exactly why her winning the crown would feel kind of like "oh... cool, yeah, i expected that."

Whereas Anetra, who only had about 10k followers before the show started, VERY QUICKLY showed that she could be up to par with Sasha herself, and she showed that she is compassionate, hard-working, consistent and just an absolute bombshell of a performer. Even with her ups and downs, the fans stuck by her because they believe that they see someone worthy of that title&money, which she ABSOLUTELY is. And I think that alone is a GREAT reason to crown her. Not even mentioning the versatility in her wins, her talent, her f*cking LIPSYNCS!!!!, etc.

I mean, imho the only right thing to me is a double-crowning. It'd be a gag, but it'd be SO GOOD since I love both of them. But if there's only one, I want Anetra to be America's Next Drag Superstar, because Sasha already is.

Kirbtober 2023 Day 29: Last Battle Ability

No one knows who created the Star Rod - variations on who made it vary from people to people, from the Ancients to the first members of the GSA to some other civilization sick of Nightmare's shenanigans, but everyone agreed it was made to deal with Nightmare, who was becoming an extremely annoying threat... but it became incomplete due to it being made in a rush. But it still proves to be one hell of an insane weapon against Nightmare anyway, so the creators had no choice but to find an isolated planet, created the Fountain of Dreams in order to power it up while the creators are away, all to hide it from Nightmare. And to the surprise of absolutely no one at this point, guess which planet that was now? Planet Popstar, of course. Thanks to the Fountain of Dreams charging the Star Rod for so long, its influence spread through the area, resulting in the area of Dreamland constantly having good dreams. In all honesty, the rod was made using Dream Matter magic, of course something like this happens. The funny thing? None of the Dreamland citizens KNOW about the Fountain of Dreams. None, not even Meta Knight knows, all they heard was this legend of the Star Rod being a viable weapon to defeat Nightmare. In fact, the reason Kirby can summon it by inhaling the Warp Star was because the supposed 'final bout' happened in his dream, which means Nightmare did a whoopsie and tried to demoralize the puffball in his own turf. Good job, Nightmare. Fortunately, when Nightmare was defeated, a part of his soul that was hidden somewhere manages to revive him, and he sets off to find the Star Rod... and by coincidence, Dedede was going to look into the legend as well. Of course, it's real, and Dedede was extremely surprised when he knew it really wasn't some random legend... oh, and Nightmare's ready to kick his ass, so he acted fast and just sealed the sorcerer before spreading the parts of the rod to random locations and even people he knows he can trust - one of them being Meta Knight. Of course, this causes mass confusion, as people lost their good dreams and just can't sleep. Thanks to Kirby's impulsivity and Tiff and Tuff mainly still being suspicious of Dedede, this entire plan goes into the trash can and Kirby ends up fighting Nightmare with the real Star Rod anyways. After all of this scuffle was solved and all the people who got pulled into this made sure that Nightmare is truly, absolutely f^cking dead, everyone in Dreamland was made aware of the Fountain of Dreams and Star Rod's existences. Since then, the Fountain of Dreams became a rather sacred ground, and the Star Rod became Kirby's first legendary weapon that he wielded that isn't the Galaxia. Kirby still sometimes enter the place himself just to sit there... doing nothing... sometimes taking the Star Rod off its place for a moment... Probably looking at the stars. Who knows what he really does...

My Best of 2023: Supporting Actress

My Best of 2023 is a series of annual lists in which I pick the best of the best from 2023, all leading up to my official picks for My Top 10 Films of 2023.

Da'vine blew me away. I loved her on Only Murders in the Building and that Breakout performance in Dolemite Is My Name, but this was next level. Emily carried so much in Oppenheimer, and her late deposition scene lays it all on the table so effectively. Rachel is now in her mom era, and absolutely killing it. The only thing keeping this from being my favorite of her performances was time travel (Go Watch About Time). Flo always wows... so no surprise she stole every scene of Oppenheimer she was in. Jodie is a legend for a reason, and the friendship and determination with which she fills this character is the best part of Nyad. Anne is a seductive mystery in Eileen, and I wanted so much more of her. Mia is f*cking scary... always... but especially in Infinity Pool. The shifts in Juilanne Moore's character in May December brilliantly shift the film itself; it's campy, it's disturbing, it's utterly hypnotizing. ScarJo got that Wes Anderson delivery down perfect, and created something special in her odd chemistry with Schwartzman. And America got the 10 spot because she got the Oscar nod, honestly. That spot very easily could've gone to Tilda, Maura, Penolope, Kathy or Rosamund.

Majesty

I got this whole piece about how disappointing the current season of anime is but i had to shelve that because Frieren is till a thing. That debbie-downer of a piece is still definitely coming out, i have grievances, but, after finishing episode twenty-one of Autistic Elf Mage, i needed to take a minute and just gush about this entire franchise. Look, I'm a sucker for a solid fantasy tale. I love all of that sh*t. I've been enamored with Arthurian legend since i was young. I've read Dune a handful of times in my life. I've read all of the Tolkien Rings books and even read the first Game of Thrones novel, but they're not for me. My favorite genre of anime and manga, after cyberpunk, is fantasy. My favorite game franchise is, you guessed, Final Fantasy. I love this sh*t so you can imagine how hard it would be to win my affection. Sousou no Frieren did that chapter one of the manga.

I absolutely adore the manga. I highly recommend checking it out but, considering the popularity of the anime, i think a ton of people already have. This sh*t has become a full-on phenomenon and rightfully so. I am a staunch believer that great visual media (TV, games, film), has to have a strong start on the page. The sh*t you're adapting, needs to be well written before you even begin to visualize how to capture anything for the eye. Sousou no Frieren is a textbook example of this sh*t. I cannot stress how well written that book is. From the characters, to the world, to the magic system; All of it is brilliantly executed with a whimsical, deadpan, levity you rarely see in modern anything. Yamada Kanehito has crafted a masterwork and Abe Tsukasa's art compliments those whimsical words, with some of the most gorgeous art being published in tonkobans today. Sousou no Frieren is every bit as excellent, in almost the exact same ways as Dungeon Meshi, and if you know me, you know that's high praise. I wrote an entire essay, straight up fanboying about Delicious in Dungeon so you know, when i say Frieren is just as brilliant, i mean it. That said, Frieren does one thing better than Meshi and that's it's anime.

The Sousou no Frieren, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End as it's being called, has no right to be as exceptional as it is. Seriously, the manga, as well executed as it is, is just a slice of life. Now, I'm not bashing that at all. I love those types of stories. Indeed, one of my other favorites, Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers, is about to get an anime adaption and that thing is basically the same concept, but Frieren's is much more about the journey, rather than the conflict. It's a very weird and contradictory thing when you actually think about it, but nothing really happens in the Frieren plot but, at the same time, SO much happens! It's chock full of content but the way that narrative is approached, makes you think otherwise. It's quite an interesting read so to see that same energy perfectly captured in the anime? I am more than impressed. And, to push my reverence even further, this show looks amazing! Easily the best animated of the season, and it's a holdover from a previous one. Seriously, Madhouse is undefeated when it comes to their craft. I still think the pinnacle of their library was that first season of Onepunch, but this is arguably a close second or third.

Sousou no Frieren is f*cking spectacular, man. In all forms. Read the manga, it's one of the best in print. Watch the anime, it's the best of the season. There's a reason why this thing has become such a cultural phenomenon. It's one of those rare franchises which actually live up to the hype. As a manga reader, i know there is a ton of sh*t just over the horizon that is going to be a f*cking spectacle when it gets animated but what we have now? Even just this bit before the real action set pieces start up, is more than enough to take in these twenty-three scheduled episodes. I mean, that "battle" with Aura was incredible and Frieren just basically stood there. How do you make a scrap that compelling, when one of the combatants doesn't even move? I don't know, but this show did just that. F*cking exquisite. Seriously, watch this show. Read the manga. Episode twenty-one just came out, there's two to go. I had planned on writing this essay after the last episode aired, but i couldn't wait. It's just that good. Sousou no Frieren is as close to a perfect anime adaption as you can get. The hype is real. Watch that sh*t right now!

2. Oof, where do I even begin?

Getting the obvious outta the way, he’s adorable. Both when I first played Skyward Sword and when I first read Jojo’s comics, I just got drawn to how kind he is. I love that he’s one of the more expressive Links compared to the others, and I had such a great time playing the game with that being one of the reasons why, other than having such a fun storyline to go through. He’s so friendly and gives off those mom friend vibes. He's just so huggable-looking.  Plus, some of my real life interests kinda mirror his aesthetic. He plays a harp, and that’s been my favorite instrument since I was little and I’ve always wanted to play it (but those things are just so damn expensive y’know?). I have a lyre and I practice on that until I’m able to afford an actual harp. As weird as this sounds, I love going outside just to watch the sky and clouds, especially in the fall (who else is excited for fall other than me?). I do this for hours. I also love pumpkins and pumpkin flavored foods, and those things are all over Skyloft.

4. What’s not to love about him? He’s got low stamina??? Idk I had a hard time answering this. Also, this kinda sounds weird but I actually have a hard time portraying him, Legend and Four the most when it comes to writing stories. 

5. That he’s just the sweetest thing on a normal day but would f*cking gut you the moment he gets angry. This guy has the power to kill a god!

6. I love that he uses his sailcloth as a cape. He still wears his fireshield earrings instead of his regular blue ones and I also think that’s neat.

7. Sky/Four, Sky/Twilight, and Sky/Hyrule. I don’t see these pairings often and I can literally feel the potential of good interactions in all of them.

8. Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess are my favorite Zelda games, so absolutely yes.

9. 100/10 I'd f***ing jump off Skyloft with no sailcloth for this guy, no question about it. I’d get my lopsided ass beat in the silent trials for him.

Anime this year has been surprisingly excellent. From the likes of Skeleton Knight, to the shockingly endearing Spy x Family, and the absolutely hilarious My Dress Up Darling, i have had a remarkably great time with the content releasing as of late. Darling, for example, ended up being one of my favorites of the past decade. Dragon Ball Super: Superhero finally dropped, a little treat for all the Gohan stans out there but it ain’t really for me. I am excited about the fact that the DB team can get back to work on that promised Super continuation though. Interestingly enough, the rest of the year looks to be even more promising. You have the continuation of BLEACH in the fall, one of my all time anime, as well as second seasons for Tanya the Evil, IN/Spectre, and BOFURI. Hell, even Danmachi and Overlord are getting releases this year, each their fourth. Plus, we get proper adaptions for Song of the Night Walkers, Vermeil in Gold, The Eminence in Shadow, Isekai Ojisan, and Slave Harem. The latter is going to be very interesting watch. Those promo shots of Roxanne are f*cking amazing. However, the most intriguing title I've come across is Bastard!!

Now, I'm an old man. I was born in the mid-Eighties, right smack in the middle of what has come to be known as, “The Golden Age of Anime.” Indeed, this era was chock full of amazing titles that were beautifully animated and absolutely inundated with content that can only be described as anti-PC. I’m talking blood, gore, ultra-violence, sexual depravity, and whatever else a Zoomer would claim is “problematic.” This sh*t was real. I’m talking about films like Wicked City and Vampire Hunter D. Even the tamer stuff was still ridiculously violent. Think Dragon Ball, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and Akira. Classics, all of them, but distinctly not of this era, which is why i find Bastard getting an adaption such an odd choice. The misadventures of the evil wizard Dark Schneider are every bit Eighties excess and i can’t imagine anyone under the age of thirty-five giving this show a chance. Bastard!! is basically Heavy Metal meets Fist of the Northstar. If you know anything about those shows, you know if they had a baby, it’d be the definition of problematic. Kids these days get upset if you even insinuate someone was kissed without consent. How the f*ck are they going to deal with the fact that, in order for the underage main character to even use his abilities, he has to be forcibly kissed?

Beyond that, holy sh*t is this series terrible to women! Like, i don’t mind it because, you know, i grew up in a time where this sh*t was normalized. I’m use to the cruelty. Again, Wicked City is a thing i watched before i made it to middle school. Belladonna of Sadness is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen but it’s a whole ass rape bonanza. All of the time. Like, the main character is just forced into sexual acts every three minutes. It’s f*cking intense and unnerving to those who aren’t accustomed to that level of brutality. The assaults are effectively a trope in that sh*t. Bastard doesn’t go that far but it is not kind to female autonomy or consent. A cursory glance at the costumes these women wear are proof enough of that. Again, i think the sh*t it’s dope and welcome the occasional return to hyper violent, overtly misogynistic, testosterone saturated, brutality, but that’s the stuff i grew up with. That level of overindulgence was my normal. My anime was not as kind as, say, Pokemon. Bastard!! feels like home to me. I can definitely do without all of the rampant sexual assault everywhere, though. Alas, it’s a necessary evil when telling these old school stories. To a degree. I’ve noticed a few edits and the covering up of certain tawdry bits in terms of the costuming but, overall, this new adaption appears to be a pretty faithful interpretation of the story i remember. Still, I'm super curious what Porno will look like in this version of the show, considering all the change to the character designs. That’s if we even get to that point. Porno Dianno is a ways off and, by then, there’s a whole different issue at hand. Here’s to adding blasphemy to all the other controversial sh*t in this show!
