     he's been gone a long time. even longer as she's dithered at her seat, wondering if she should check and see if he's alright or not. perhaps he's trying to give her a HINT, and let her know as politely as he can that his interest in getting coffee with her is minimal, at best.

or maybe she's wrong to assume that. they were having a nice time, and usually do -- ben is great company, most of the time, filled with lots of stories and always willing to turn coffee into lunch or drinks into dinner. maybe something is WRONG.

rey pushes to her feet and wanders off in the direction he'd gone in before she can talk herself out of it. he'd said he was going to the bathroom...

but, she realizes, drawing up short in the secluded hallway leading to it, where ben is standing frozen, he'd never made it there. she steps forward CAREFULLY, lips pulling down into a frown as she notices his quick breathing and flushed face. his eyes are vacant, staring blankly at the wall. his hands are shaking.

"ben?" rey starts softly. it seems stupid to ask if he's alright; it's clear something is very wrong. as she studies him, she starts to recognize panic in the furrow of his brow, anxiety in the tense line of his jaw. it's a feeling she knows well, and it instantly stokes her sympathy. she stands as close to him as she can without touching him. "ben... it's ALRIGHT. you're alright; i'm here. just breathe."

Something about the text causes a shiver to run down the assistant's spine, he isn't sure what it is but the feeling has a vice grip on his chest that burrows into his heart and lungs - it feels...heavy, as though he had been tossed into a ditch and covered in dirt. His throat is thick and he swears his vision feels blurry for all but a moment, the world is dark and smells of nothing but decay and mold - his tongue is dry before another text shows on his screen.

Danny asking him what he wants for dinner.

"Just a typo...just a typo, a silly thing to be worked up over Robin. Relax." Although a part of his mind couldn't place why the misspell brought him such depth of dread and confusion. His grip loosens ever so slightly and he finally finds the energy to reply:

Honesty

Anxiety smells fruity. Berries trapped in cups, shallow strawberry and bully hibiscus smoking its own emerged pot. Must it sit and stink, stink stiflingly? I prefer the earthy smell of coffee left on table from Monday morning. The irony of engulfed brown roasted bitterness, I’m thinking, is the honesty of it. It’s figures in chokehold, yet brutally explicit with every knock-out. Eyes as hazelnuts, blue lighting reveals itself over time – downright proper with scent of fresh thyme.

OPEN STARTER // CAGED // REY ASHFORD

Everything felt jumbled, like something had shattered inside her mind. Which technically it had. The control chip that had kept Rey obedient, that had made her the Asset, the assassin... it was gone. Rey was free for the first time since she had been a child. But was she really free?

The ex-assassin didn't remember anything, her mind a mess of memories. Each one more disturbing than the last. It left her curled up in a ball in the cage that now housed her. She can only presume whoever put her in there was the one that had taken out the chip... When they took her would have been when she was the asset... a weapon. Did they aim to help her? Or make her pay for the acts she committed when she didn't have the freedom of choice?

Only time would tell when she hears someone enter the room. Peeking up, Rey is filled with fear as she sees who just entered.

HEY GIRLIE LUV UR BLOG was just wonderin what type of modern media (like after the 80s or smth) henry wld like in ur opinion? things like idk music/artists or movies/shows or heck even musicals! ^^

awh, thank you so much!! i'm always heartened greatly to see people finding enjoyment in my blog and my content. i do this for all of us henry-enamored masses, as goddd knows we deserve it. there is such a profound lack of content about him pretty much everywhere.

this is such a thrilling ask to receive! i would love to share my thoughts on that. because i have strong perfectionist tendencies, however, i will deviate from the instructions a little bit and break this down into two sections — a short mention of interests that align with the canonical timeline, and one that attunes to a more modern setting. beware that i'm incredibly biased, but all of these just make sense to me. click on links to hear examples.

so, we know that TSH takes place in the 80s. it's never directly mentioned which year we are actually toying with, but it's sort of generally established in the fandom that the story starts in the late summer/fall of 1983 (richard attending hampden and joining the greek class), and ends in the summer of 1984 (henry doing what he did). therefore, these first few propositions on my end are based on this boundary. not to worry, however — it'll be quite short, as i, as a contemporary member of gen z, have way more things to add to the modern list.

he would be quite fond of classical music, there's no way around it. specifically, and mostly because of donna tartt's own description of him likening an old ballerina, i would even go as far as saying that he prefers ballet. take tchaikovsky as an example — swan lake or the nutcracker as the classics, definitely. i wouldn't even exclude the possibility that he would like to go see performances thereof (aside from reimaginations of ancient greek theater, of course). i'm not exactly well-versed in classical music, but from what i do know, i would also like to add that he could like rachmaninoff, shostakovich, beethoven and bach, of course. chopin, even. and yes, i know, this might be quite boring to uninterested minds — which is why i will be moving on.

to assume a slightly more modernized viewpoint (80s-90s)... he would love depeche mode. specifically their albums some great reward, black celebration, and ultra — the comparably darkest ones. this doesn't quite align with the "canonical" timeline as all of those were released around/after 1984, but i just know he would. specifically the songs but not tonight, only when i lose myself, lie to me, if you want, and (of COURSE) enjoy the silence. just basically depeche mode as a whole — so fitting.

for a more broad approach to slightly older music: tears for fears, the cure, duran duran, billie joel, U2, chris isaak, the smiths.

now, to modern stuff. i have to mention lana del rey. there is no way around her when i talk about henry. ultraviolence and honeymoon are his albums. from UV: specifically shades of cool, black beauty, and the title track itself. from honeymoon: the blackest day, swan song, terrence, and, once again, the title track itself. from other albums, i'd say: if you lie down with me, did you know, NFR, national anthem, and i can fly. a bonus mention of unreleased songs that suit him so well: cult leader, tv in black and white, and serial killer. can you tell i am a diehard lana fan? always have, always will. i could write a novel-length essay about how each song on her discography correlates with henry. i love them both so.

other examples of newer music he would like: mitski (specifically heat lightning and once more to see you, but generally all of them), lorde, mac demarco, local natives, the national, birdy. and — you need to hear me out — some taylor swift songs. i think he would appreciate the poeticism of folklore (e.g. hoax, this is me trying, the lakes) and evermore (cowboy like me, tolerate it). sue me.

when it comes to film and tv... i'd say he would be one of those people who genuinely enjoy silent movies, lol. pretentiously so. to be less humorous, i think he'd quite enjoy complex dramas. the haunting of hill house, maybe. the sixth sense. the shining. the silence of the lambs. hannibal. TROY (although he would complain and complain and complain about the inaccuracy but still like it). a clockwork orange. dexter. evidently, i'm not a huge movie nerd, which is why this might be a little general. but here are just some thoughts.

for musicals, i needed to consult my devoted theater kid friend. to make a long debate short, we agree that it would be the phantom of the opera, les mis, and heathers (for some funny reason). as an explanation on the latter — he would enjoy the hierarchy concept and the dark comedy of it all. but this is just a wild card, lol. the other two are more fitting (specifically the phantom of the opera!).

this took longer than anticipated to compose, but i hope it provides some sort of outlook. thank you, once again, for this wonderful ask! i was overjoyed to say the absolute least.

I was thinking and meditating a lot about Hephaistion these last days, and I also thought about the Hephaistion you wrote in your duology (which I love very much); I came to the conclusion of something and it is something Hephaistion would say/sing if he had heard this, quote:

"Yeah, my boyfriend's pretty cool But he's not as cool as me"

it is a verse from the song 'Brooklyn baby' by Lana del Rey, it fits perfectly with Alexander and Hephaistion! Yes, it's true that Alejandro is someone extraordinary and cool, but Hefestión is more so.

[Spoiler of the novel ⚠️: the fact that Hephaistion is so beautiful, so pretty in the novel makes many people look at him; but we know that Hephaistion is not only a pretty face. The point of it all is that he ranked among the best warriors or has a rather prudent and mature personality, it gives him an appealing air: Hephaistion is not only beauty, but also brains].

I had to go and listen to the song. It’s got a very Beat Poet vibe, which, given the lyrics, makes sense. Ha. (Even before I read the lyrics, I got that feel, so she succeeded in her aim.)

The “air of cool” is something Hephaistion is trying to project—(to use modern examples) a little Fonzie, a little (more dangerous) Marlon Brando (below: Marlon Brando from "A Streetcar Named Desire").

Ironically, he doesn’t see himself that way. He’s playing a part. He wants to be cool like Agathon.

Further irony: that wasn’t Agathon’s sort of cool; he was the extroverted jokester who’d never met a stranger, his devil-may-care of a happy, friendly sort. Hephaistion can’t begin to approach Agathon’s personality, so he tries to project whatever he can manage. The devil-may-care turns into “I don’t give a fuck what you think of me.” He turns his quietness/insecurity into arrogance.*

In his own mind, Hephaistion is an outsider who feels acutely different—not cool at all. His way of trying to mitigate being the outsider is to voluntarily situate himself as a loner. “I know you won’t like me, so I’ll reject you first.” Alexandros, of course, picks up on that pretty quickly, although he doesn’t yet know the piece about Agathon.

The real Hephaistion is (predictably) different from his projections, and not only because he’s trying to be Agathon (and doing it badly). The “I don’t care about any of you” routine is immediately punctured by sympathy/empathy for Alexandros. That’s the real Hephaistion. If Alexandros has an instant crush on Hephaistion, Hephaistion doesn’t have one on him (he’s a kid still). He just sees a little brother in need of a big brother.

So, I don’t think Hephaistion would consider himself cooler than Alexandros, as Alexandros is much closer to Agathon, personality-wise, who Hephaistion idolized. And that is, initially, some of the reason for Hephaistion’s affection. He wants to protect the kid who’s like the brother who loved and protected him. Hephaistion is both a little in awe of Alexandros (as he was of Agathon), but also feels sorry for how he had to grow up and wants to shelter him.

As Hephaistion ages, more of his real self does (and will) emerge. He feels more centered, in part thanks to Alexandros. He’ll always have that broody, angsty edge—that is part of him, because he’s inclined to overanalyze and fail to get out of his own head—but he’s less devil-may-care and “too cool for school.”

* To be fair, Hephaistion does have an arrogant (and sarcastic) bone. He’s incredibly intelligent, and has a hard time taking seriously, much less submitting to anybody he can outthink—which is most people. Alexandros recognizes that, too.

🥯: if she has time, she likes to have a good breakfast. something hearty with toast and protein and coffee, to sit and eat it by a window. most likely, she's got just coffee and a scowl

🌴: she likes plants, and you could probably leave one that isn't too delicate with her to take care of- but honestly it's no deeper than that. overall, the idea of being self sufficient and growing your own food is appealing, and the hard labor with a specific goal would also be something she could get behind, but as a hobby she'd not take up gardening

Eiden:

🥯: breakfast was once a big affair with heavy foods for him, and in fits of nostalgia, they would miss it. he still enjoys having breakfast, and often will fit something in, in the mornings. meals, they find, is a good way to pull people into interacting.

🌴: eiden has learned a great deal about plants, about their uses, but never really has tried to grow them himself. honestly, not likely to be that great, as the poor plant would get forgotten on whatever shelf it was put on, unless in a fit of whimsy eiden gave it personality like a pet.

Dalmar:

🥯: he has, when able, a strict morning routine and absolutely includes some coffee or tea, the newspaper, and something to munch on. Likely just some toast and jam, or simple eggs, nothing glamorous or heavy, but its about the only meal of the day he's guaranteed to eat.

🌴: as plants have been useful in certain studies, they were around often enough and he knows how to keep one alive. in terms of gardening on a large scale- he'll hire somebody to make his yard look nice.

Leja:

🥯: most likely to sleep through breakfast. brunch or onward is where her preferred meals start. if you ask, she'd love breakfast foods. she just can't be bothered to get up to eat them at a reasonable time.

🌴: best green thumb. she loves plants and would have an entire house full- the type to have those certain plants even in the shower, with a garden. can grow anything. spends a lot of time taking care of and enjoying nature.

Rei:

🥯: has breakfast most days. he's the type to get up with the sun and have busy days and thus needs the energy. all that health focus, and a big eater in general, he absolutely has big hearty breakfasts. doesn't really go for the sweet type of breakfasts, though.

🌴: he grew up with gardens and growing his own food, with some animals and such as well. he's quite used to living off of nature and working hard to get it to cooperate and such. modern verse, he'd of been a farmboy. that said, things like just flowers, succulents, that sort of plant that just goes on your shelf, he'd not be interested in unless asked to watch one for a friend.

Vasil:

🥯: once upon a time, lavish meals and an excessive affair. that said, they don't eat the same way most others do and their hunger is often different, and it's mostly just because they enjoy that sort of baroque tradition. will likely eat, if food is presented.

🌴: they have no interest in plants and you should not leave one for them to care for

Ok. So Bertie comin into his own would definitely be an adjustment for folks. I mean I kinda think about it as the Bertholdt we see when Rei is down for the count and Bert is confronting the others at the last battle at Shiganshina.

He got that bass in his voice and doesn't mince his words. His mind is made up and even if he doesn't like what's gotta happen, he's prepared to see it through. Gots to see it through ma boy. 🥲

But in terms of him being this way in NOT such sad situations. I think much of that holds true. I still don't think that power would go to his head though. He's always going to be a sweetheart as long as the safety of his loved ones isn't at stake.

I'm kinda waffling back in forth in my head between like semi canon verse and modern au verses thinkin about this which is making some things hard to parse out.

But I don't know if I can ever see him "throwing his weight around" in ways of intimidation or such. I see Bertie more as a--carries a big stick but doesn't necessarily care if anyone notices or not cause if the time comes they'll figure out their mistake quick enough? Like I've never watched Peaky Blinders, but that clip of the brothers showin up and the two who aren't actually in charge are makin a big show like they are while main dude is all silent, laid back and chill?

Which is now makin me pine for some Mafia/Crime Boss Bertholdt hcs.....👀

Hazel eyes stare at the offending piece of clothing offered to her. "It looks itchy." Rey has a thing when it came to certain fabrics and most sweaters were not something she could stand wearing. Some she immediately would want to take off after putting it on. She blames her sensory issues.

"Can't I wear one of those t-shirts? Or a onesie? Onesies are fun to wear." Those she can stand wearing.
