Have you read The war that killed Achilles? If yes, is it a good book? I'm debating on reading it or not and I'm not sure

I have read more than half of it (progress got stalled by a couple weeks of migraine-- I struggle with reading paper books during those times), and I really like it. Alexander's writing style is really accessible and I've learned a lot of history that I hadn't even thought to look up.

She goes through the Iliad pretty much in chronological order, explaining what's happening in the plot and then adding historical context to those plot points, whether it's the mythological tradition at the time, what other historians have found important, how the audience in Homer's time might have received it, etc etc.

As with any writing about the Iliad, she has her own opinions about various aspects of the story, some I find interesting, some I find compelling, and some I disagree with. Reading and liking someone's book and acknowledging their expertise doesn't mean you have to ascribe wholesale to their views.

I've found it really interesting and I'm glad I'm reading it, however slowly that may be. But I enjoy non-fiction books, so your mileage may vary!
