There's a post going around that's essentially telling people it's stupid to look for queer subtext in Disney movies when we could be enjoying "actual" queer content instead, and every time I see it, it frustrates me.
Queerness is baked into Disney whether the Mouse, or bloggers on tumblr, want to admit it or not. There is an extremely, extremely strong history of queer subtext in Disney films being intentionally put there by the queers who crafted your childhood favorites.
You can call out Disney's queerphobia, and you can condemn capitalism, and you can want the Mouse to topple (I do), but you don't get to sit there and act like we always had the luxury to just go "enjoy actual queer content." And for the absolute love of all that is holy, you don't get to erase the legacy of Howard Ashman, an out gay man who died of AIDS and is directly responsible for your favorites of the Disney Renaissance.
Regardless of whether you find Disney Gays "cringey" (which, honestly, just fucking Stop), I fucking need y'all to understand that queerness in Disney films is NOT just wishful thinking and it's not fair to shit all over people with a history of only getting to see ourselves as Disney fucking villains, alright? I love modern queer cartoons as much as anyone else, but WE DIDN'T ALWAYS HAVE THOSE, and there is immense value in analyzing the queer subtext of media that exists in a queerphobic society.

One day I wanna be rich enough that I can just like. Give away hundreds of thousands of dollars every year in like scholarships or grants or whatever. That when I see someone make a post like “hey can I get $50 for groceries” I can just donate $1000. Or tip my server their rent money. Like that’s the dream
my favorite relationship is the one between humans and dandelions. in childhood we instinctively blow on its little fuzzy seed carriers. we take the role of the wind, we help the dandelions in a crucial part of their lives, and in return we get a wish and a moment of happiness. this is how nature is meant to work. we are just as unaware of our goodness as the honey bees are, pollinating the flowers
Sirius didn’t know that the Dursleys were abusive.
At the end of Prisoner of Azkaban, he automatically assumes that Harry would rather live with them than with him. In the Goblet of Fire, Harry writes to him about Dudley’s video games and diet habits but never explicitly mentions anything about being abused. Even when he gets to Grimmauld Place in the Order of the Phoenix, he expresses his anger at not receiving information and though we know that he was also emotionally exhausted from spending another summer at an abusive household, he never discloses it. In fact, seeing as how he protected Dudley, Sirius could just as well be under the impression that the two were very close.
And I hate this so much because Sirius Orion Black grew up in an abusive household and if he had known for a single second that his godson was facing the same thing that he had faced, he would have really blown up a street in an attempt to get to Privet Drive and rescue Harry.
And it also breaks my heart because you know that Harry knew this which meant that he was more worried about his godfather’s safety and freedom than he was his own health.
If I had a nickel for every big name Harry Potter fanfic writer who started their own cult, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
