Here’s the first part of the proto comic for Ren’s Awakening. None of this is canon. The finalized comic is in production.

Whumpee lies in a dark, musty room. They toss and turn, groaning, seeing things in the darkness that aren’t there. The rag on their head is now lukewarm. Caretaker comes change it, their candle shining like a light at the end of the tunnel. They open a window and sponge the sweat off of Whumpee’s face and neck, brushing the bangs away from their forehead. It’s a cascade of relief and comfort that lulls Whumpee into a heavy, dreamless sleep.

I like this painting because you can project whatever kind of whump you want on this guy. Presumably, something happened and he was dragged to bed, fully clothed.

Hey guys, my friend needs some gender-affirming care. Please help. Any amount is appreciated. If you can’t donate, then consider spreading this around.
Thank you!

Whumpee being unable to lie down comfortably for whatever reason. Maybe they’re traveling or are wounded in a way that doesn’t allow them to recline. Maybe they have a lung infection that requires them to sit upright.
Imagine Caretaker sitting beside them with a folded rag or cushion on their shoulder that they let Whumpee rest their head on. Whumpee is finally able to fall asleep leaning against Caretaker.

Caretaker falling apart over what might’ve happened to Whumpee, but deciding to respect Whumpee’s privacy. They have to stop themselves from prying or asking certain questions, knowing full well that there’s a darker, painful, intimate story behind Whumpee’s condition.
Alternatively, Whumpee’s history is eating away at them, and they’re dying to tell Caretaker everything. They decide to repress themselves for one reason or another. Maybe they’re afraid of disturbing Caretaker. Maybe they’re doubting their own recollection of what happened. Maybe they’ve been conditioned to view vulnerability as weakness.
Either way, there’s something preventing these two people from sharing the whole truth about a painful situation.

I had a hypnotherapy session today where I realized a few things:
When you think of the dynamic between a caretaker and a whumpee, I want you to imagine yourself in both roles. See yourself as someone in need of validation and care, and give yourself unconditional love and support. Don’t shame yourself. Comfort yourself when you feel uncomfortable (not bad) emotions, knowing that those emotions have a reason to be there. Celebrate with yourself when you heal and make progress. Protect yourself from the people that want to put you down. Accept the validation of other people when it comes, but don’t feel the need to seek it out, knowing that you already love and accept the person you’re taking care of (yourself).
In short, be your own caretaker.

There’s something about a whumpee just sitting down. Not fainting, necessarily. Maybe they’re just about to faint, and they quietly just kneel on the ground at a time and place that doesn’t make sense. They don’t even have the capacity or willingness to articulate why they need to abruptly stop and sit. Maybe they’re catatonic while the others look at them.
Maybe a caretaker can see the dull, vacant look in their eyes and immediately senses that something is seriously wrong. Maybe the fainting comes just a few moments later.

God, I love sickfics that cut between a Whumpee’s current illness, and illnesses they’ve had in the past. Before, being sick was traumatic and lonely. Maybe they were neglected or even ostracized for their illness. In the present day, they don’t know how to handle being loved.

Whump thought of the day:
Waking up from a long fever coma fucking shriveled up because you spent the past 20 hours sweating out half your body weight.

A whumpee prematurely returning to their duties and attending a meeting/class/training session/whatever. They’re clearly falling apart in silence, and they quietly excuse themselves halfway through. One of their friends finds them bleeding/vomiting/unconscious in the bathroom much later.

Imagine a whumpee being alone while sick or injured. They card their fingers through their own hair and fall into a half-sleep, imagining and/or hallucinating someone they love being there for them. Maybe it’s a memory from a time they were taken care of.
