What is corpus linguistics?
Linguists need large databases of language in use in order to study how language works.
A language database is called a corpus (Latin ‘body’, pl. corpora), and a corpus consists of a collection of texts (they don’t have to be actual text; a “text” is any cohesive discourse event).
The field of corpus linguistics focuses on how to build and use corpora and run statistical analyses on the resulting data.
Here’s a very accessible introduction to corpus linguistics:

I know people on tumblr looove stories of underwater cave diving, but I haven't seen anyone talk about nitrogen narcosis aka "raptures of the deep"
basically when you want to get your advanced scuba certification (allowing you to go more than 60 feet deep) you have to undergo a very specific test: your instructor takes you down past the 60+ foot threshold, and she brings a little underwater white board with her.
she writes a very basic math problem on that board. 6 + 15. she shows it to you, and you have to solve it.
if you can solve it, you're good. that is the hardest part of the test.
because here's what happens: there is a subset of people, and we have no real idea why this happens only to them, who lose their minds at depth. they're not dying, they're not running out of oxygen, they just completely lose their sense of identity when deep in the sea.
a woman on a dive my instructor led once vanished during the course of the excursion. they were diving near this dropoff point, beyond which the depth exceeded 60 feet and he'd told them not to go down that way. the instructor made his way over to look for her and found a guy sitting at the edge of the dropoff (an underwater cliff situation) just staring down into the dark. the guy is okay, but he's at the threshold, spacing out, and mentally difficult to reach. they try to communicate, and finally the guy just points down into the dark, knowing he can't go down there, but he saw the woman go.
instructor is deep water certified and he goes down. he shines his light into the dark, down onto the seafloor which is at 90 feet below the surface. he sees the woman, her arms locked to her sides, moving like a fish, swimming furiously in circles in the pitch black.
she is hard to catch but he stops her and checks her remaining oxygen: she is almost out, on account of swimming a marathon for absolutely no reason. he is able to drag her back up, get her to a stable depth to decompress, and bring her to the surface safely.
when their masks are off and he finally asks her what happened, and why was she swimming like that, she says she fully, 100% believed she was a mermaid, had always been a mermaid, and something was hunting her in the dark 👍

It would have been so damn funny if the Crows showed up in Ravka during Shadow and Bone and there was a language barrier. I mean, just imagine.
They're in the little palace, and Kaz and Inej are in disguise, someone asks Kaz something and he just looks at her in panic. So she's just like "Sorry, he's awful with people, what do you need?" Or the exchange with Alina and the Crows. She tries to leave and Kaz stops her with his cane and says something in Kerch, but there's a pause before Inej translates since she doesn't really want to go against her Saint, so there's five seconds of him just glaring at Alina in total silence as Jesper looks between Inej and Kaz, absolutely exhausted.
Or that scene where Jesper is fighting the Grisha guy in a laundry room. They're just shouting back and forth but neither of them can understand the other, so it's just this chaotic vaguely Dutch-Russian sounding exchange of comments that have nothing to do with each other being shouted on screen.

"You have no finesse."
"Sure I do. I practice the art of 'pull his shirt over his head and punch 'till you see blood'"
I kind of love how all of the other crows have very clear, refined combat skills that are talents they've been perfecting for years, but for Kaz his angle is literally just This Bitch Will Not Stop. He's not the strongest or the fastest and he's got no formal training whatsoever but he's so fuelled by spite and willpower that if you cut off his arm he'd pick up his severed limb and beat you with it.

Yes, you absolutely may.
Made this and quietly laughed to myself the whole time.

I'm thinking about rewriting one of the Kaz/Inej scenes from the other person's point of view, the one that it isn't told from in the books, as practice with character narration styles and writing with personality. I'll put it on Ao3 if it goes well, so that brings me to the question:
There will be an analysis stage to this, of course; I'll do my best to do the writing justice, rest assured. If I do end up doing this, I will reblog it here.

Kaz, after a scheme goes awry: I'm glad I take precautions. Thanks to those 37 fail-safes that I built into this plan, Inej didn't end up seriously injured.
Inej: I can't believe I survived that, my saints must be watching over me. I owe a great deal of thanks to them in my prayers tonight.

Hello Six of Crows fans, in case you were having a bad day today, this is your reminder that to almost everyone in the Church of Barter in Crooked Kingdom, it seemed like an esteemed, wealthy, adult businessman and politician just completely lost his mind at some random high-school age delinquent from the slums and blamed a massive scandal on him. Really just zoom out for a second here. To us as readers, Kaz is, well, Kaz, but to everyone in that story without the context of who he is, he is essentially a random kid with a cane and a questionable haircut. Van Eck in that scene is accusing him of everything from conning him to disguising his son as someone else. This would be like Elon Musk getting on national television after a massive tech disaster and blaming the entire thing on a fairly average high schooler with a light criminal record. It's just so absurdly funny to me, I will never get over it.

Okay, so. I think that Kaz actually tells Inej the full story of what happened to him and his brother before the end of Crooked Kingdom. My reasoning for this is that, in the chapel, when she finds out that Kaz didn't actually bury Pekka's son, she's talking about mercy and decency and all. Then, what, two or three weeks later, she breaks into Pekka's house, cuts a serious wound across his chest, and basically tells him to get the hell out of Ketterdam or she will carve his heart out. Now, I think that's a pretty damn big mood shift to happen for no reason. I think that Kaz told her what Pekka did to him, and she decided that in order for Kaz to heal, Pekka needs to be gone, and on top of that, she was probably also absolutely livid. She says "I have my own message to deliver." Her message is to stay the hell away from Kaz, and it's delivered with all the burning hatred that comes with seeing someone you love in pain. She knew whatever Pekka did was bad but I'm pretty sure the Reaper's Barge would have pushed her over the edge. The way she talks to Pekka in that chapter is really chilling, because we've only ever seen that viciousness with Heleen and Van Eck, and even with Van Eck she says that her threats were "Ugly words. Speech that pricked her conscience." For her to be that unhinged, I think it's safe to say that she now knows what happened to Kaz and she is furious.

Foolish of the entire damn Grishaverse (minus Ravka) to think they were a match for the Ice Court crew.
