As regards influences in my life, I can categorically affirm that training at the Earlham Street Dojo with Steve Morris1979 - 80 was a one of several wake up events. All contact with remarable men will open up a challenge and set you on a certain path of discovery or one of denial. Steve Morris broke the mould in many respects and set me on a course that fuelled a lifeling interest in functional movement over form practice. The so called Internal systems are just as flawed as the Karate that Steve dissects so well in the article below. For me whole body function and natural movement are really in dire straights in the world of compliant martial arts practice, including the so called internal arts. How I met Steve Morris as a 19 year old. I saw a sign in the window of the Steve Morris's 1st floor Earlham Street Dojo every time I came and went from Victor Kan's Wing Chun basement school, which was ditectly opposite. For personal reasons Wing Chun did not impress me, so on my final day of frustration with Wing Chun, I ascended from Kan's coal cellar and onto the pavement, pausing, staring for a few moments at a hand written sign in the window opposite that simply said Kick Boxing, a sign that had beckoned for many months, I marched across the street, through the open door, headed up a flight of stairs, doubled back and up a few more steps into a small entrance that had a window on the right. I stopped dead, the atmosphere was intense and I looked at photo's on the wall of a long haired bloke bare chested wearing Gi trousers smashing huge concrete looking blocks, like a reversal of scene in the movie Leon, I was about to meet someone very very serious. I glanced through and caught the eyes of the man himself and walked in to be greeted by a martial arts genious, what he showed me in that first meeting blew my mind. 2023 Happy New Year to all past , present and future students, friends who have maintained and supported my investigations into the inner world. I cannot say with any certainty that my inner experieces warrant description. Words are inadequate when attempting to fix that which cannot be fixed, or for that matter even needs fixing. Inwardly we question ourselves to understand existence, whilst at the same time we search outside ourselves for some elusive answer to the world and our place in it. To state that all beings are connected is very easy and can be repeated, in parrot fashion. What appears as our own life force seamlessly enters and leaves others and yet we constantly fail to recognize the meaning of this, that is, ' We are one another another'. What is the purpose of your movement. The practice of Qi Gong literally meaning ( breath work ) is since the 1950's a term that refers to folk practices and the self cultivation of body mind and spirit informed by Taoist, Buddhist and Confucian concepts with the aim to access the body ( and its life force ) which is the most accessible to work with. The calming of emotional turbidity is more tricky to transmute, and then there is mind which is quite a tough element to dificult to deal with. The me, I amd myself along with innner judge and Jury and executioner is the most important aspect to pacify to free oneself up from. If you find yourself simply arm waving and think qi gong practice is self entertainment or a spiritual path then STOP now. If you are a no strain no pain addict to self abuse you will be blind to the benefits of balance so jog on. If you are addicted to feeling safe and cozy energy, know that, that is worse than addiction to heroin. Take up Salsa or Morris Dancing, you will get more out of that than indulging in pseudo-spiritual nonsense. This is one for the record! Unlike the Tai Chi handshake this is the Tai Chi sandwich. Left of frame, the not so inscrutable duo of John Ding, 1st disciple of Ip Tai Tak and on the right BK Frantzis disciple of Lui Hung Chieh. I invested roughly 10 and 17 years respectivly analysing their teaching methods. In retrospect both incrediibly talented and for sure well versed in Nei Gong. On the cobbles ( in a violent encounter ) there is only one of them I would want by my side. The most obvious take away is that the vast majority TCC aspirants hide behind their projections of the invincibilty of their teachers. It is a malady that afflicts the self defence industry en masse. To reify and project a cult status onto Tai Chi veterans is a form masochism and self delusion. Bottom line, feeding ego's is good business. 95% of TCC is useless for self defence because it is not reality tested. In my online subscription class for existing students, I share the major acupuncture points associated with both Hun Yuan Qi Gong and Qi Gong practice and culture in general. This will help you understand some of the indicated problems; for example, a point in the back of the knee called WEIZHONG, which has implications for lower back pain and motor impairment of the hip joint. It, along with CHENGSHAN in the belly of the calf muscle, can be opened up intelligently with excellent results for health and balance. Acupuncture helps to balance your Qi and is done to you, whereas Qi Gong is the self-practice you do to increase and maintain the benefits of opening your energy pathways. Due to a back injury two decades ago, my back would periodically collapse without warning leaving me in severe pain with loss of 70 to 80% mobility.
