Thinking about Jason Grace who has never had a decent experience with romance.

His first contact with it was with his best friend and fellow praetor, one forged by Rome’s expectations but not his will.

His second experience - also the last - was a fake girlfriend given upon his manipulative step-mother’s ideas, who later turned out to be into girls. It also created a rift between him and his previous almost-girlfriend, who above all was his best friend.

And the only time he got to meet a god of love - the supposedly cute and sweet Cupid - was only to watch, in helplessness, the god brutally threaten his friend to come out as a payment for helping them save their world.

All of that - and he died before he got to know what love’s supposed to mean.

the reason jason is so tragic is like. not because he died. it’s because he never lived. he was shaped into a leader and he himself was not some great tough leader of rome he was just. some kid. who wanted to know what love looked like. percy got a happy ending with annabeth even after everything but jason never even knew how to. hold hands properly. without questioning everything about himself always. he never got to be himself. i’m choking

see, when we first meet piper mclean, she is just this doe-eyed girl... unsure of herself and her place in the world. she is closed-off and has random bursts of anger; but more than anything, she is empathetic. we see this throughout the entire series: before anything else, she talks to her enemies. before any blood is spilled, she tries to understand, to empathize, to get everyone out safely. she doesn't even really know how to use her knife. she prefers the cornucopia because it's less violent.

by her last appearance, this has all completely flipped. piper stabs medea in the back without a second thought. she goes after a trained sorceress who has almost murdered her multiple times, who is better than her in every way, and she stabs her with the knife she always resented. piper figured she was going to die. and a lot of this has got to be grief. by this point, piper has lost almost everything that ever mattered to her. her empathy got her nowhere. but it is also a stark, and very looked over, contrast to the wide-eyed girl we are first introduced to.

Exactly! I can look past a lot of things, but him being short (and skinny, for similar reasons!) is very important. Most of his character is built off of three things: his height, his body mass, and (of course) his mother, though the last one doesn't really have anything to do with casting, so I won't go into much depth right now.

His height gives him general disadvantages like you said. I don't feel any need to go any deeper, I think you said it all!

His skinniness (is that a word?) is one of the main things his insecurities are based on (plus height of course). All the guys? Buff, well built, broad shoulders. As a hormonal teenager, Leo probably feels a bit effeminate, which is a big reason he feels like he has to like women as much as he can. Most teenage boys at that age feel like they have to prove their "manliness", and because todays society is so much different from where those instincts came from, there's less traditional ways to do that (i.e.: hunting, general strength, etc). So where do many smaller teen boys go? Women. It's a way to prove themselves (albeit an unnecessary and borderline sexist idea). So of course Leo wants the attention of young ladies. He has assessed the other boys around him (Percy Jackson, who's referenced multiple times as being akin to a Greek God; Jason Grace, all-American blonde Superman; Frank Zhang, who, although often described as having a "baby face", is still standing at about 6'0 for most of the books.) and decided- wether subconsciously or not- "I need to be like this". Now, Leo is pretty self aware most of the time (this may be a bit biased, as I am irrevocably in love with the boy and will wholeheartedly agree with him every time he says he's attractive), so he compares like machines. These guys are tall, I am not. These guys are buff and filled out, I am not. Since he can't change his physical form very much, where else can he go? These guys have girlfriends, something I also could have. Girls don't want anything to do with me? I'll make myself appealing. I'll joke and smile and laugh and tease until one of the girls laughs with me. I will prove that I am just as good as the other guys. This, in my personal opinion, is an example (though a tragic one) of Leo's intelligence. Trial and error. Cause and effect. Girls don't like that joke. Girls don't like this, they don't like that. He brushes off they're disinterest, having already decided no girl will truly like him. He jokes, he flirts, all for the hope that one day, someone will deem him attractive. Someone will love him like his mother did, the only one he was truly happy with.
