In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.

I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!

From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!

I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.

The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.

(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)

If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.

The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.

insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box

add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box

delete -> self explanatory

on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic

The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.

Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

AO3 Etiquette

It would seem a whole new kind of AO3 reader/writer is emerging and it is becoming clear not everyone quite understands how the website community works. Here is some basic guidance on how most people expect you to go about using AO3 to keep this a fun community archive that funtions correctly:

Kudos is for when the story was interesting enough to make you finish reading. If it sucked or was badly written, you probably left. If you finished - you kudos.

If you liked it, you should comment. It can be long and detailed or a literal keysmash. Writers don't care, we just love comments.

No critisism unless the author has specifically asked or agreed to hear it. Even constructive critisism is a no-no unless an author note tells you it's okay. Many people write as a fun hobby or a way to cope with, among other things, insecurity. Don't ruin that for them.

Do not comment to ask the author to write/update something else. It's tacky and off-putting and will probably have the opposite effect than the one you want.

There is no algorithm, it's an archive. Use the search and filter function to add/remove the pairings/characters/tropes etc. you want to read about and it will find you the fics that fit the bill.

For this to work, writers must tag and rate stories. This avoids readers finding the wrong things and missing the stuff they want. I don't care how cringy that trope is in your eyes - it gets tagged.

Character A/Character B means a ROMANTIC or SEXUAL relationship of some kind. Character A&Character B is PLANTONIC, like friendship or family.

Nothing is banned. This is an implicit rule because banning one thing is a slipperly slope to banning another and another, until nothing is allowed anymore. Do not expect anyone to censor for you. Because of the tags system, you are responsible for your own reading experience.

People can create new chapters and sequels/fic series any time after they "complete" a story. So it's considered perfectly normal to subscribe, even to a finished story. You can even subscribe to the author instead just to cover your bases.

Do not repost stories or change the publishing date without an extremely good reason (like a complete top to bottom rewrite). It's an archive, not social media. No one cares what's the most recent, only what fits their tag needs.

Avoid deleting a story you wrote if you hate it - orphan it so others can still enjoy it, without it being connected to you anymore.

This is a creative fanfiction archive. No essays on your insights or theories please. There are other places for that.

I KNOW there's plenty more I missed but I'm trying to cover most of the basics that people seem to be struggling with.

I invite anyone to add to this, but please explain, don't berate.

Dawn of a New Life AU

Here's some basic facts about Servant Sun/Dawn while I try to figure out how I wanna go about sharing my AU:

Soaked kitten vibes all the way. Squonk in animatronic form, dissolving into a puddle of tears the second you raise your voice. All this is to say I love him very much

Okay but seriously though- he survived Lord Eclipse for over a century. Boi didn't manage that on accident. He knows how to survive and how to get through tough situations.

Stutters when speaking. At first it just used to be from fear of Lord Eclipse, but over time it damaged his voicebox and now it's a permanent speech impediment. His voice also has a faint static to it and can't be raised very loud (if he tries his voice will start popping and crackling painfully)

Wears soft, fluffy clothes. IDK what "default" outfit to give him, but it's loose fitting and comfy

Other notes on his appearance; dull, almost grey yellow, visible scuffs and wear and tear on his body, rays sit half retracted with jankier movements as if there's more resistance. A few cracks here and there. Usually stands like he's trying to make himself smaller. Overall easy to tell apart from Sun.

Loves music! He rarely if ever heard music back when he served Lord Eclipse, so it's a novel experience for him as well as a great comfort. Unfortunately for everyone else his music taste can be very cursed because he has no sense of whether or not the songs he listens to are overused or "cringe" (think unironically listening to Rick Astley). Sun and Moon have died a little inside at his music taste on multiple occasions, but giving Dawn grief about it is considered Illegal, so they suffer though it. (Some favourites of his are AJR, Mother Mother and Cosmic Shelldrake)

Heyyy so I've had this little AU idea brewing in my head for a while now and I wanted to see if anyone else might enjoy it too :D

(I'd love to start writing it but I'm currently lacking motivation, so I'm hoping that by talking about it with others I can make myself commit to it)

I call it Dawn of a New Life. Starting way back when Moon and Lunar stumbled into the Lord Eclipse's dimension, they ended up rescuing the Servant Sun and brought him back home with them! Servant Sun (soon renamed to Dawn) was not even REMOTELY prepared for this abrupt change, but hey, at least he's alive, right...? He's highly traumatised from his time serving Lord Eclipse, and more jumpy than a rabbit on caffeine, but over time he starts realising that maybe, just maybe... things really have changed for the better. Angst, bonding, character development, and even some shenanigans ensue.

The story begins diverging slowly at first, then dramatically from canon. Dawn's presence opens up so many potential routes, and recently all of my seemingly mutually exclusive scenarios fell into place into one actually cohesive plotline which made me realise "wait a minute, I could actually write this!" I would LOVE to hear if anyone else would be interested- I'll try to share some more details later, I just need a bit of direction. Questions about anything at all would be appreciated. Dawn is the absolute most pathetic wet kitten and I love him very much :)

MY GOD THE LAES EPISODE CRYING CRYING CRYING SO MANY THINGS

Earth is just so shaken, she says she’s okay right now but it’s clear she doesn’t quite know what to do about all of this, and I don’t think suddenly having a new body to really hit it home that she got destroyed is helping very much. I hope for her sake the new clothing and size adjustment features bring her some joy- y’know, soften the blow a bit, give her something to like about her new body. I also hope she acknowledges that she needs support right now, rather than brushing off her own feelings and continuing to try to be the others’ support like always. (Looks to me like her new model is based more on Ninja’s art of her, which is neat. Very pretty. Gotta admit though, I’m kinda sad her proportions were changed. I really liked how (for lack of a better word, forgive me) thick she was- it just made her look so soft and comfy to hug. Reminded me of my mum’s proportions, which probably influenced my opinion in that regard lol. Alas. Don’t get me wrong, I still like her new look very much, she looks like a cheerleader and it’s great, but still. Large Earth will always live on in my heart.)

Moon seems like he’s this close to just snapping. He just wants to protect his family but things just keep happening to them and he’s not able to do anything about it. Bloodmoon is in BIG trouble, I’ll bet. (For context, I wrote this before watching the TSAMS episode. Guess I was right.)

Lunar, oh honey- they feel so guilty about this, about not being able to help her. Just everything about their reaction, from their shocked silence over the phone to latching on to Earth the second they saw her, not even caring about the new look, just latching on and practically sobbing “I’m sorry.”

Sun just lowkey broke my heart. His tiny, quiet comment about the possibility of this being a different Earth- I can see why he’d be so worried about that, it’s exactly what happened to Moon, and Lunar to an extent. Earth looking different from how she used to would be far from reassuring in that regard, possibly even being the thing that made him think of the possibility in the first place. He was so scared he had to make sure, had to ask her if she still likes Barbie, one of the most constant parts of Earth, because he can’t go through that again. God, ALL of his siblings have died at some point, he’s lost them all in one way or another and now his fear of history repeating itself once again is rearing its ugly head and he’s scared and my heart is BREAKING GODDAMMIT ;-;

WHY MUST THIS FAMILY GO THROUGH SUCH HELL

I vote they have an off-screen movie night or something- all of them, Earth, Moon, Lunar, Sun, Monty, Solar, all just being together for a while doing something simple and easy. Let them just exist in the comfort of each other’s presences, give them some time to process that they’re all here, all alive, all safe for the moment. Let them switch off for a bit and reset their emotions before facing anything else. God knows they ALL need it.

Oh, I actually know a couple more! Waaayyyy back at the beginning of last October, when Eclipse and Lunar took over, he killed several security guards at Glamrock Freddy and Roxanne's wedding! I don't think it's specified how many, but it was several.

The wedding was split up between two videos on the Roxanne and Gregory Show and the Glamrock Freddy and Circus Baby Show, but I can't quite remember the names. In the first one we see Baby, Gregory and "Sun" discussing how they're gonna crash the wedding, with "Sun" being given the task of distracting the security guards so Baby can get through. (No-one knew that this was actually Eclipse, though it obviously was to the audience.) The next episode after Baby takes out the maternity chip, Monty mentions the guards had been killed, and "Sun" is nowhere to be found (I mean... I GUESS being killed counts as a distraction?? lol). I think in one of the follow-up videos Baby and Gregory bring it up again, realising that "Sun" must have been Eclipse the entire time.

To be fair, it is something you'd only know about if you've watched the Roxanne/Gregory and GlamFreddy/CircusBaby shows (or watched the maternity chip plotline for added context like I did), so I don't blame people for not knowing. But I'd say it counts! Eclipse clearly didn't have a problem with killing, he was just focused on Sun and Moon, whom he wanted alive to torment.

So I have seen some many inaccurate estimations of Eclipse's body count, so today. Why am I doing this? I actually don't know, just wanted to give Eclipse a body count.

But first, we need to set up some rules.

Video game kills don't count, for obvious reasons.

We are still going to count characters with small roles, those characters in the show's universe had an actual life before they got killed so they got to count.

I am not going to count instances that isn't really known on whether it is Sun or Eclipse, we have to know if it's one-hundred precent Eclipse's doing so we know what his guilty of and what he is not guilty of.

Now I know some of you might be thinking, "didn't you say no video game kills?" well in the actual video it isn't treated like a gaming video and instead treated like something Sun and Moon are actually doing, therefore the kills are actually real.

Eclipse killed all the animatronics there, and even Moon even stated that they were only meant to destroy the building not the animatronics there so it wasn't like Eclipse was told to kill all the animatronics he just did it just because.

Victim number five: the guard in the interview episode.

Although Eclipse did accuse Sun of killing the guard instead of him, which Old Moon believed instead of listening to his brother, and I am still salty about, but besides that, Eclipse's accusations turned out to be faulty so he is held accountable to this murder

Victim number six: Lunar.

Lunar's death is Eclipse's most famous murder. The murder of Lunar was not an accident unlike the bite of 1983, I don't know why I brought this up I just did. But, Lunar's death really shows how much Eclipse didn't care about Lunar, that he was willing to kill Lunar just to get the star, and the fact is, he got the star and still killed Lunar. Look, I get Eclipse redemption argument, but Lunar's death is the reason why I can never like Eclipse as a character. Eclipse got what he wanted and still killed Lunar.

To end this off, in summary, Eclipse has killed six, if not more, people and we are all cool with that.

Sun mentioned teaching Moon how to drive yesterday, and as I've already shared my Sun driving headcanon, here's my headcanon for Moon;

Both Old and New Moon are/were equally bad at driving, but have/had very different attitudes about it. New Moon, as we've seen, very much does NOT like it and does NOT wanna learn. I imagine he'd be just as nervous as Earth, except more internally screaming rather than external (he described cars as "metal death traps" in the episode he picked up Sun from being kidnapped). He'd absolutely make the situation worse for himself too- he makes a mistake, panics, overcorrects himself, panic even more, and things get progressively worse until him and Sun are drifting full throttle down the road, screaming. Somehow he never crashes. The Old Moon on the other hand. He did NOT care. He'd drive like a bat outta hell, yelling "DON'T WORRY I GOT THIS," causing utter mayhem, and afterwards pointing out that he didn't crash once (by some miracle), so clearly he must be doing something right.

On a related note, here's a couple Incorrect Quotes I made on the topic a while back:

Sun: Okay, you’re driving when Monty and Lunar walk into the road in front of you. Quick, what do you hit? Moon: Definitely Monty. I could never hurt Lunar. Sun, tired: The brakes, Moon.
