hcs for liper! any and every!!!

when they get their first apartment together,one of the first things they do is buy a potted plant and name it Wilbur. Wilbur lives with them until their kids are adults.

they both struggle with sleeping: piper has insomnia and leo can't sleep bc of nightmares, so they end up buying a white noise machine to see if it will help. it does, and they both sleep easier than they've done in years.

the entirety of both of her pregnancies, piper is constantly craving pickles dipped in hot sauce. unsurprisingly, both of their kids find themselves enjoying pickles dipped in hot sauce when they are older.

leo leaves his tools everywhere. it's a problem. he has been sleeping on the couch for the last week bc of this. save his back from the couch.

they go to senior prom together, but end up ditching it early to go to in and out burger. it's 11 pm and they stumble home together before falling asleep in their dress and suit.

they have a dog named clover!!! she's a Siberian husky mix who sleeps at the foot of their bed and watches after their kids like they are her puppies.

And now for some sadder hcs bc i cannot control myself:

while on the Argo, piper can't sleep without leo. when he goes to ogygia, she doesn't sleep for the entire 9 days he's gone.

some days, piper's depression hits her hard. on those days, leo will sit with her and tell her every little reason he loves her, and he'll keep her warm.

on the days where leo's insecurities hit him hard, piper lies down next to him, tracing his face with her fingertips and whispers i love you until he believes her.

and those days, are some of the worst and best days they have together.

Hey! This art is absolutely beautiful but just so you know, the way Rick wrote Piper with the feathers in her hair is very racist and indigenous folks in the fandom have been asking people not to draw/write her with them! So it would be great in the future not to draw her with the feathers and to be mindful that she’s Native and that Rick didn’t do his research well on her representation at all. Here’s a good post by a Native person to read through that goes over some ways to better represent her! I love your art and I’d hope to see some drawings of Piper in the feature that dont feature the feathers & reddish hair.

I don’t understand why Piper having her kaleidoscope eyes is such a bad thing. She’s not just Native American and she has two parents! When people white wash her, not right. The fact that Rick wrote her with feathers in her hair? Not right. But her eye color? I just don’t see the big deal.

If she weren’t a character of color, I wouldn’t have any issue with it. But the fact remains: light eyes are currently a eurocentric standard of beauty that harms women of color on a daily basis, it’s based in racist and colonialist beauty standards, and the way in which Rick focuses on the beauty of her eyes being kaleidoscope rather than “plain old brown like other native women” is, frankly, colorist and exotifying.

Here are some insightful blog posts and essays on the subject: a blog post on white beauty standards, this one is a study on how it affects black women specifically (but is still applicable to the issues with Piper), more about the affect these standards have on women, and even more stuff. Here is a blog on the subject. I also recommend looking at the blog @writingwithcolor for more information on representing characters of color. If you check the tags and the FAQ there’s probably information on exotification, beauty standards, and colorism somewhere. I also recommend reading more posts from @finding-my-culture to understand more indigenous perspectives.

I definitely invite you to research more about colorism and colorist beauty standards. That will hopefully help you understand the impact of a lack of positive representation of brown and black features, including eye color.

And you have to remember: these books are marketed to minors. Young women of color are reading these books and internalizing messages that Piper’s light eyes and Hazel’s gold eyes are More Cool/Interesting/Pretty than if they had brown eyes. It’s not just as simple as “it’s just a cool design!” it’s as serious as “kids have been insecure about something as important as their eyes simply because a book told them they’d be prettier if their eyes were gold or kaleidoscope.”

And another reason it’s such a big problem is because of the exotifying nature of it. As this indigenous woman talks about in this YouTube video, native women are exotified and sexualized to the point of indigenous women going missing, being murdered or raped...for more information I recommend looking into the #MMIW tag, and watching that video for more on what representation has to do with this issue. It’s deeper than an eye color. It’s contributing to a system that sexualises and devalues the features of young women of color.

Piper’s eyes being light and kaleidoscope are frequently remarked upon as one of her most beautiful features, if not her most beautiful. Why is it that when it comes to light or unique eye colors, Rick spends paragraphs on their beauty, but when it comes to dark eyes, his only lines about them are how sinister they are, like when Reyna’s eyes were first described?

I just reblogged a post about it but here’s some reasons:

she wears fucking feathers in her hair (including at least one eagle feather)

Riordan gave her blue/green/“kaleidoscope” eyes to show that she’s “beautiful” as if brown eyes aren’t good enough

she’s a fucking kleptomaniac, which is something even RR critical people ignore???

her dad was explicitly said to take on any role, including violently racist ones like Middle Eastern terrorists, except Native ones for some reason

she’s frequently oversexualized

she’s Cherokee, which wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t Riordan just trying to shoehorn a character into being Native by making her part of the tribe that everyone knows and claims to be

her culture is literally never mentioned in any sort of accurate detail, except for the fucking “two wolves” story which actually originated with Christian missionaries

the reservation that her family is supposedly from doesn’t actually exist and was likely the result of extremely poor research on Riordan’s part

she’s paired off with a white guy

literally everything about her is a mess, it’s bad
