Symbolist Avatar- Curiosity/Obsession
Costume concept illustration inspired by Jungian concepts and the Symbolist art movement. The pieces are made by digitally collaging, then painting over, elements primarily from Symbolist paintings (1860-80s) and Romanticist era works (1800-1850s).
I approached each illustration through an attempt to image an aspect or mentality that I saw in myself. The act of giving image to these aspects became a tool of introspection and a way to communicate with, and give voice to my unconscious.
Through a process that feels like visual alchemy, I used instinct and references to myth and art history to try to depict the positive and negative aspects of each mentality, the light and shadow sides of each Avatar.
I recommend the book "Man and His Symbols" and the podcast "This Jungian Life" for anyone interested in Carl Jung, mental health and Symbolism.
