Summary: After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers. Their new friend, April O'Neil, helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.
Release Date: August 2, 2023
Director: Jeff Rowe
Rating: PG
I love this film and would recommend it! It’s my second favorite animated film of the year, and I’ve seen it twice so far. It has an amazing soundtrack, a cool animation style, excellent humor, likable characters, and an excellent cast. I love that it feels authentically Gen Z (it’s the first film that I know of to use the word “rizz”) because Seth Rogen and the rest of the creative team really let the teen actors improvise, be themselves, and have fun. This gives the turtles incredible chemistry and makes them really seem like brothers. Also, this film once again proves that it’s the year of Ayo Edebiri.

Summary: When teenager Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who's already a meteoric rock 'n' roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, and a gentle best friend.
Release Date: October 27, 2023
Director: Sofia Coppola
Rating: R
I’m a big fan of Sofia Coppola and this film did not disappoint! Like her other films, it’s haunting, atmospheric, beautiful, powerful, and evocative. It truly captures quiet joy and quiet sorrow. The soundtrack is excellent, and Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi both do a fantastic job of bringing these real-life figures to life. If you’ve seen Elvis (2022), Priscilla is a very different interpretation of Elvis- quieter, softer, more interested in the small, subtle moments that made up the couple’s turbulent life together than the larger than life showiness found in the other film. IMO, these two films would work well as companion pieces.

Summary: Brynn finds solace within the walls of the home where she grew up until she's awakened one night by strange noises from unearthly intruders.
Release Date: September 19, 2023
Director: Brian Duffield
Rating: PG-13
I wasn’t the biggest fan of this film, TBH. The no talking gimmick didn’t work for me and made it difficult to get through. But I like Kaitlin Dever as an actress, and I know a lot of people liked this film! So maybe this film will work for you.

Summary: A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers embark on an epic quest to retrieve a long lost relic, but their charming adventure goes dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.
Release Date: March 31, 2023
Directors: Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley
Rating: PG-13
I went in with mid-tier expectations due to the early trailers being meh, but it ended up being one of my favorite films of 2023! There are so many genuinely laugh-out-loud moments, the cast is phenomenal, and it’s wildly entertaining from start to finish. So if you’ve been avoiding this film due to low expectations, I’d definitely recommend checking it out!

Summary: Unpopular best friends PJ and Josie start a high school fight club to meet girls and lose their virginity. They soon find themselves in over their heads when the most popular students start beating each other up in the name of self-defense.
Release Date: August 25, 2023
Director: Emma Seligman
Rating: R
I couldn’t rave about this movie more! I genuinely think it’s one of the funniest movies ever, and it’s unapologetically queer AF! Easily one of the best films of the year, and in a just world, it would receive recognition during awards season (but this is not a just world). Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri, and Ruby Cruz are sensational, and I’d also recommend watching Emma Seligman’s first film, Shiva Baby if you haven’t (also starring Rachel Sennott).

Summary: The story of American scientist, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and his role in the development of the atomic bomb.
Release Date: July 21, 2023
Director: Christopher Nolan
Rating: R
If you somehow managed to dodge Barbeheimer mania this summer and have been avoiding this film, I’d recommend checking it out now that things have died down and it’s out of theaters. Oppenheimer will be nominated and likely win lots of awards during awards season- and rightfully so! It’s a triumph!

Summary: Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.
Release Date: July 21, 2023
Director: Greta Gerwig
Rating: PG-13
This blog is a Greta Gerwig stan first and a person second! If you somehow managed to avoid Barbenheimer mania during the summer, you should still check out Barbie now that the hype has died down (even if, and maybe especially if, you think Barbie isn’t for you). Barbie means a lot of different things to different people, but ultimately, it’s simply a great movie, period. It’s fun, emotional, colorful, and culturally relevant. It achieves what it sets out to achieve at the highest level of excellence, and it was rewarded for it!

Summary: While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers and brothers Mario and Luigi are transported through a mysterious pipe to a magical new world. But when the siblings are separated, an epic adventure begins.
Release Date: April 5, 2023
Director: Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic
Rating: PG
Is this the greatest film ever made? Probably not. Is it a fun, entertaining, and joyful time at the movies, especially if you grew up playing at least one of the many, many Mario-themed games? Absolutely. And the people agreed, since this is the second highest grossing film of 2023, 100% launching a new animated film franchise in the process. Wahoo indeed!

Summary: The cultural phenomenon continues as pop icon Taylor Swift performs hit songs in a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience.
Release Date: October 13, 2023
Director: Sam Wrench
Even if you’re not a Swiftie, I’d recommend seeing this film because Taylor is such an undeniable pop culture juggernaut. So even from a sociology/media analysis perspective, this film is relevant, important, and fascinating. (Also, admit it: the songs slap!)

Summary: James and Em Foster are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors.
Release Date: January 27, 2023
Director: Brandon Cronenberg
Rating: R
While this wasn’t my favorite film of 2023 (I was hoping to love it more), I think it’s worth seeing! It raises interesting questions about ethics, hedonism, tourism, and humanity’s addiction to violence and spectacle. And Mia Goth gives a delightfully unhinged performance as usual.

Release Date: July 14, 2023
Director: Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman
Rating: PG-13
This movie fucking slaps and I believe it’s destined to become a cult classic! It’s hilarious and gay and hits close to home for everyone who has ever been a theater kid in any capacity. The cast slaps, and the soundtrack slays!

Everyone and their 5th cousin has likely seen this movie, or so it seems, but if you’ve managed to avoid it, you should definitely go watch it! It lives up to the hype and is an amazing sequel, amazing animated film, amazing superhero film, amazing Spider-Man film, and amazing film in general!

There’s a bear! It did cocaine! If that doesn’t sell you on this film, nothing probably will. When you see a movie called Cocaine Bear, you know what you’re getting into lol. But the movie is a blast! Would recommend seeing it with friends!
