FFF: Frozen 2
DID YOU KNOW? The sound designers of Frozen 2, use surprising elements for the sounds of their creature characters! But, what are they?
For the sounds of the mythical horse creature, “Nokk”, the sound designers not only use horse’s recordings, but also a slowened bird and dolphin!
The sounds of Bruni the Salamander consists slowed-down Madagascar Mongoose Lemur, fire sounds, fireworks and Doppler-processed pig squeals.
Sometimes in sound designing, we need to use unexpected elements to make a character sounded more authentic and even realistic.

FBS Top Picks: Sci-Fi
Gravity (2013) Two astronauts work together to survive after an accident leaves them stranded in space. They delivered an innovative sound that has never been seen in movies. The sound follows us as the actor movie in space. Since the movie is set in space, the only sound one gets is from the perspective of touch. They intelligently transferred the sound through objects, touch and vibration instead of putting a lot of silence or music to mask the silence.
Interstellar (2014) A team of explorer travels through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure the survival of humanity. The approach of this movie is adventurous and creative. For example, a dialogue is used as a sound effect, it’s mixed slightly underneath the other sound effects to emphasize how loud the surrounding noise is. They also want us to experience the journey the character is going on, they wanted to be true to the experience of space travel, and to emphasize intimate elements.
Tron: Legacy (2010) The son of a virtual world designer goes looking for his father and ends up inside the digital world that his father designed. The movie is stunning in both visual aspect and sound aspect. The combination of sound and vision in Tron: Legacy are pretty much perfect. They have an amazing soundtrack, but the attention they put into the detail sounds is what makes this movie outstanding.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) A cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her son from a more advanced and powerful cyborg. They used special effects technology to create the T-1000, a liquid metal machine. In order to further convince us that we’re seeing liquid metal, they made sure the sound of the material was realistic and unique. This effort really left us speechless.
Men in Black (1997) A police officer joins a secret organization that polices and monitors extraterrestrial interactions on Earth. There are many scenes where the sounds really allow us to believe the alien-fighting action happening on screen. In the opening credit scene, we see a buzzing dragonfly alien, the buzzing sound was created with Foley using a cheap battery-powered fan. The buzzing effect created the perfect atmosphere and made us believe anything can happen there.

FBS Top Picks: Fantasy
Maleficent (2014) A powerful fairy who is deceived by the love of her life places a curse on his daughter in order to exact revenge. The sounds are used to help bring a sense of drama to each scene. Like the sounds of Maleficent’s wings make against the wind as she soars, which reveals power. Her wings are one of the hardest sounds to create, they needed to evoke power and speed but still sound like they were coming from feathers without sounding too leathery or paper.
Alice in Wonderland (2010) Alice returns to the magical world from her childhood, where she reunited with her old friends and learns her true destiny. In the movie, they use calming sound effects, such as chirping birds, to enhance the music and the visual. But in some scenes, they use sound effects to add drama, like the battle scene between Alice and Jabberwocky. The sound effects made us feel the full effect of the danger Alice is about to face in attempting to slay him.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) Four kids travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia and learn of their destiny to free it with the guidance of a mystical lion. The sound effects are used to intensify, add details and add a sense of realness to the scenes. Like the foley footsteps, the lamppost with flam, and the scene where the magic wand was destroyed, in order to show that something magical happened.
Edward Scissorbands (1990) A man who has scissors for hands leads a solitary life. Then one day, a lady meets him and introduces him to her world. Sound effects and music were used to set mood and tone into the movie, which helped us feel emotions. Since Edward doesn’t talk a lot, he interacts using his “hands”. When he is happy, he repeats the sound several times creating an irregular rhythm, the scissor-hands humanizes Edward’s character by representing his emotions.
Crimson Peak (2015) Edith marries Sir Thomas Sharpe, a mysterious outsider, when she arrives at his family mansion, she learns about his dark secrets. Their approach is to enhance the details. Sounds of winds moaning through structures are used to set the emotion of the house. They focused on breathing sounds for the ghosts, they collected wheezing sounds from themselves, their sick children, etc. the sicker it sounds, the more it enhances the sick hearts of the ghosts.

FBS Top Picks: Games Pt. 3
Blood & Truth (2019) In this game, we play as Ryan Marks, a former Special Forces soldier who must save his family from a London crime boss. They are bringing these characters to life visually and choosing the right talent to voice them to life. Besides the top-notch voice acting, sound effects are amazing too. When things get messy, it’s the symphony of destruction that makes the chaos all the sweeter.
Total War: Three Kingdom (2019) Here we play as one of the game’s twelve factions, who must eliminate other factions, unify China and become its ruler. The goal with the sound was to make them feel alive, dynamic, and responsive to certain conditions for an added level of realism. They also create an audio system that allows for the ambience to be used at the various times of day to blend with each other seamlessly, which also be sounding coherent and believable.
Unruly Heroes (2019) We can play as one of four heroes that battle different enemies and travel west to hunt for the scattered remnants of the Sacred Scroll. The music and sound effects are as perfect as they need to be. The Chinese-styles music is charming, stylized, to a point where you’ll never get bored of it, and fit perfectly with the theme of the game. Both music and sound effects complement the voice acting.

FBS Top Picks: Romance
Titanic (1997) A seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, unfortunate Titanic. The sound effects are incredible. Most of them are created to give a feeling of the atmosphere to give us a real feel and sense of realness. These noises range from the sound of waves in the ocean to the calls of seagulls. The sound of the shrinking ship was actually created by the sounds of metal crushing and lots of heavy flowing water.
A Star is Born (2018) A famous musician helps a singer to follow her dreams, as he battles with alcoholism and his personal demons. The goal was to make everything feel real and authentic. The atmosphere created by the sound, or lack of sound, pulled us emotionally into the world of the characters. Like when Jack leaves the high-volume world of the concert and enters the car, he enters the isolated world shaped by his tinnitus.
La La Land (2016) While navigating their careers in LA, a pianist and an actress fall in love while they attempt to balance their aspirations for the future. They wanted the sound to be naturalistic. For example, the famous duet dancing scene features city noises as the background sound. They use foley for movements, footsteps, hand grabbing the lamppost which helps to make it feel like it’s a live recording, that they’re really singing there.
The Notebook (2004) A poor man falls in love with a rich woman, giving her a sense of freedom, but they are soon separated because of their social differences. They set the sounds at a realistic view and use them to set the emotional factor to the movie, for romantic encounters between the actors and suspense scenes when something is about to happen. For example, the ocean, the birds, the thunder, the noises at the carnival.
Pride and Prejudice (2005) Sparks fly when spirited Elizabeth meets Mr. Darcy. But Mr. Darcy hesitantly find himself falling in love with a woman beneath his class. The simple sounds they use like piano, birds singing, river create a realistic and lively image. The use of different sounds also reflects the characters’ relationship: from dislike to attraction, from admiration to hatefulness, and from resentfulness to intimacy. It helps us to understand the conflicts and intimacy between the characters better.

FBS Top Picks: Animation
Wall-E (2008) A famous animation movie about robots on a journey to change fate of mankind. Considered as the most advanced animated movies, with great visual details and creative sound effects. Sounds are very important here because this animation mostly has no dialogue.
Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) A young woman is cursed with an old body, her only chance to return back lies in a wizard and his friends in his walking castle. The sounds and music help to make it look as life-like as possible especially with careful attention to minor details, such as the footsteps sound on different ground to create a sense of realism to an animated movie.
Spirited Away (2001) A girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts. In this movie, aspects of nature are used throughout the film with realistic sound features. The sound also is used to enhance the mood of the scene, so we can be drawn into the storyline and become more involved in what is happening.
Ponyo (2008) A five-year-old boy develops a relationship with Ponyo, a young goldfish princess who wants to become a human. The music is used to set the mood of the scenes and portray how we should feel. Sound effects are used to draw attention to a certain factor or to point the presence of an important factor, sounds are also used to signal the importance of a certain situation or one’s word.
Toy Story 3 (2010) Before Andy leaves for college, his toys are mistakenly delivered to a daycare, Woody convinces the others that they weren't dumped and return home. They developed the sounds from the previous movies to continue the world created in the first two. The sounds were very detailed, all footsteps for all the characters were Foley, the movement for the characters were Foley and effects.

FBS Top Picks: Games Pt. 2
Resident Evil 2 Remake (2019) Leon and Claire must escape Raccoon City after its citizen are transformed into zombies by a biological weapon (G-virus). This game truly knows how to elevate scares by what we can hear. The use of music helps to create a frightening environment. It complements the groans of the zombies, the hiss of the Lickers, and the ominous footsteps of Mr. X, all served to keep us on the edge.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019) Luigi must explore an haunted hotel, incorporate different theme on each floor and rescue his friends from ghosts that live in the hotel. It’s amazing how the ghosts can quickly turned from a high pitched mockery to a desperate wail. Even though the voice acting is decent, the sound design brings it to life and amplifies every environment in unique different ways.
Darq (2019) Lloyd is aware that he is dreaming. To survive there, he must bend the laws of Physics and manipulate the fluid fabric of the dream world. They say all sounds on each level has a reference to either the real world or take place in a very specific location, such as an opera, hospital, abandoned school etc. So all ambient sounds should be made from recordings or material recorded at those locations, and as many assets as possible were created from such material.

FBS Top Picks: Superhero
The Dark Knight (2008) When the Joker brings chaos to Gotham, Batman must face one of greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability. They tried to make a realistic Batman film, the sound effects infer more towards an action thriller movie. The use of music is also clever, sometimes the music will be a subtle quiet noise in the background that slowly builds up over time or just sets a mood without even realising it.
Black Panther (2018) T’Challa, heir of Wakanda, must step forward to lead his people and must confront a challenger from his country’s past. They accomplished this Afro-tech blend of cultural history and heritage combined with next-level technology. With amazing visuals and detailed sounds, from the sound of the ship, the kinetics of the suit, to the Vibranium effect where the sonic texture pushed in.
Spider-Man (2002) The life of a teenage boy, Peter Parker, changes when he is bitten by a genetically altered spider and gains superpowers. This movie started the original and iconic sound of Spiderman’s web-slinger. The movie’s franchise has gone through plenty of changes since 2002, on thing that remained constant over the past 15 years has been the use of amazing sound editing to capture the mystique of Marvel universe.
Aquaman (2018) Arthur, the human-born heir to the Atlantis, goes on a quest to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land. This movie serves everything from creatively crafting powerful water sounds, ‘laser’ guns, and deep-sea battle sounds. But the biggest challenge was underwater vocals. They wanted it to sound intelligible, without sounding too realistic or too echo-y. They continually tweak the dialogue processing until it sounded right, making it sounds dynamic and alive without too echo-y.
Avengers: End Game The Avengers assemble once more with the remaining allies in order to revers Thanos’ actions and restore balance to their universe. The biggest challenge in the movie was to turn such a tiny noise into a huge emotional moment. For example the snap sound. It’s simple, but it’s also the shocking culmination of the MCU’s emotional roller coaster. They made sure we felt the snap as well as we heard it.
