Context: Your baby sister has been feeling down ever since the disastrous trip to the village fair, so you and your co-conspirators decide to surprise her by creating new dresses for an exclusive DIY fashion show.

Bonus: It’s a success and another one of your siblings end up discovering a skill that they are mind-bogglingly good at.

I imagine this taking place after the kids had to visit the central village fair for consumable produce, and Nana being an adult stuck in a child’s body got distracted by all the pretty wares and clothes that were being displayed. She had been admiring the dresses, when she was suddenly manhandled by an extremely irate and furious stall owner. A man, who not just a few moments ago had been acting really nice and fondly indulgent towards her.

Nana is saved by Ryuu before the screaming owner can throw her down, and hastily taken away from the gathering crowd. The last thing she sees before Ryuu covers her eyes and ears is the sight of the full-grown adult who had been taking sick satisfaction from her fear rapidly paling in front of a young black-haired child wearing an ANBU mask.

(Ps. The clothes were designed by our dumpster diving legend Kyoko. The expensive fabric scraps and flower pins that they found during their spree may or may not have been left by a concerned ANBU as an apology for being unable to intervene sooner.)

Yes Nana gets to have special multi coloured flecks in her eyes. It’s a combo from her parents + A Jinchuuriki thing. Is it cool to look at up close? Absolutely. Does it freak out people inside the universe? Definitely. It’s just one of those things besides their aura which make Jinchuuriki, especially this one- other.

The most uncomfortable part was making Sasuke’s vacant soulless eyes compared to the vibrant ones of the rest of the gang. And yes following that line of intent I tried to make Sasuke look as dead and washed out as possible (though not as much as what Sai would look like).

Sidenote- the only reason Kakashi still has light in his eyes is because of Gai, Yamato and Nana.

Fun fact - I did a little play with the way Team 7 wear their hitaiate as an indication of their loyalties and feelings regarding Konoha in general. I was inspired by how Kushina used to wear her own hitaiate before and after being rescued by Minato.

You already know about Nana. In Sasuke's case his engraving isn't center aligned to show his skewed priorities. His hair also slightly covers the engraving to show that he holds resentment towards the village and the other clans. Because even though he puts all his energy into vengeance and securing his safety + silencing his survivor's guilt, a part of him subconsciously does smart and wonder about how come an entire clan was massacred in a shinobi village and no one picked up on it + how no efforts have been made at killing Itachi even though an entire clan, and not just any but a founding clan was wiped from Konoha's map. Like if it had been any of the Ino-Shika-Cho clans or even the Hyuuga clan the village backlash and retaliation against a traitor would have been way more worse. A large part of him does suffer from tunnel vision, and unfortunately for him triumphs over the part that notes these inconsistencies. As a result he sees the village as another party and entity that was betrayed and used by Itachi. Right now Konoha is just another victim in his mind.

With Kakashi half of his engraving has been hidden by his hair. U can take a guess at why one half is covered. The other half being uncovered is because he has people precious to him. People who have quite literally become his will to live. He has one member of his former pack still alive + he wants to keep the Obito he remembered alive in spirit + he refuses to go down the way Sakumo did. He is not blind to the village's everything but at this point his loyalty is not to the village so much as the few people within it and memories of ghosts who did cherish it. All of said loyalty would burn into cinders the moment any one in his pack was threatened by the village though (as seen in the case of Tenzo vs Sarutobi vs Danzo)

I deliberately kept Sakura the same because her character is fascinating in canon (once you look past the slapstick). She is way too insecure about so many things that she unknowingly sees being a shinobi as a way to fit in and make up for said 'deficiencies'. The prejudice between shinobi vs civilians is very real and it's only gonna get harder from here. She doesn't have a leg up in training like the other rookie 9 characters do. Her priority isn't the village or being a shinobi so much as accomplishing an immediate goal and making up for her own lacking validation and self worth. Plus her upbringing and priorities as a civilian born clash with the ones shinobi prioritise. Much like pre-Sharingan Kakashi when lost she sticks to the rules and books because those are her only guide on how to navigate this mess. She is LONELY, a state half because of her own errors and because of other factors. There is an imbalance of status, Power and more when it comes to her relationship with her peers. As such the hitaiate is used as a hairband instead of a forehead protector to show her hopes of bridging the gap and gaining the confidence she yearns for. To project a false sense of security and as a proof that she does in fact belong where she is even though she may not truly feel that way on the inside.

Context: In Classic Team 7 Fashion a mission goes horribly wrong.

Wherein Kakashi is frustrated and at a loss, Nana thinks too much and doesn't trust enough, consecutively Team 7 takes the fall.

Or Team 7 is every writer’s chew toy and Fate loves repeating itself.

I totally imagined this as being the mission that forces Kakashi and Nana to actually bond and stop skirting around each other.

Wherein Kakashi actually learns to go past his vulnerability and defences to show Nana that he cares, and Nana learns to lower her defences and let herself be cared for.

I also hc that this has happened to Kakashi before, when he himself was a kid and had fresh out of stumbling upon the cooling body of his father been newly assigned under the tutelage of a very much 16 years old and not ready to handle this mess Minato.

So yes, Kakashi is rapidly re-evaluating everything he thought he knew and understood about his bond with his late Sensei, and gaining a whole new level of mortification about himself respect for the man.

For the peeps who are curious this is the background for the character design of Uzumaki Nana from ‘In Sound Judgement’ by @negativeaperture

Warning some spoilers below the cut

The idea was to show the various roles, connections, titles and loyalties Nana held, how they conflicted and the way she prioritised them/ was torn between them.

The way each title has been slapped over the other + their colour is an indication of just how I think Nana may prioritise and feel about those associations.

So like being a Shinobi is at the very bottom of the barrel because she sees it as a chain/ shackle. It’s a title she hates. (U may have noticed that her hair covers the engraving on the hitai-ate in the main art, that’s not a coincidence)

Vs.

Being a Jinchuuriki is in neon and kind of popping cuz as much as she would like to ignore her status as a walking nuclear bomb, she really really cannot do that.

Also yes Nana doesn’t know that Kakashi sees her as his sister/family but it’s his influence and timely intervention that prevents her from sinking, so the title gets the brightness it deserves dammnit.

And yup the ‘Daughter’ is faded, because parents (at least in this life) are an abstract construct for her.

Despite the ominous colour of ‘orphan’ it actually plays a very important place in her life and has mostly positive associations, because that’s how she met Kana and others. (I didn’t add family because Nana thinks they are dead(?) and I am pretty sure she is trying very hard to not think about that)

My favourite parts were the word play I did with her name and Team 7 + the paw print blotting on her last life’s name and occupation.

Alternatively- The only time Tanjirou broke his moral code was when Nezuko was in danger.
