7 depression tips and why they work, from someone whoâs been hardcore depressed for two years
hi so im recovering from a really mean depression and there are some things i learned and that i would like to tell you.Â
1. you need to reappropriate your space and time. depression is lying to you and generally shrinks your living space (aka: you spend your time in bed/behind your computer/in your roomâŚ). visit and do something (even if its just scrolling down social media) in each room you have access to. expand your perception and space, youâll breathe more easily.
2. plan depression outfits. a depression outfit is a comfy one you still can go out in. to me, itâs old ripped jeans and a turtleneck, my old work uniforms, sweaters. dressing up is one of the most important parts of managing depression. first of all, youâll feel less like pathetic with proper clothes on (nothing worse than staying in your pj all day). secondly, and itâs a crucial point: it allows you to get out to run some errands. imagine you have to go grocery shopping or to the post office. if youâre in your unwashed pajamas youâve been wearing for three days or more (been there done that) what you have to do is to undress, shower (if you can), and put on real, clean clothes. which is three things. depression messes wih oneâs ability to start things, so itâs very likely youâll drop your errands and just stay at home feeling like shit. but if youâre already wearing clothes, you just have to put on a coat and get out of the house. which is, trust me, 10 times easier than doing the whole dressing up thing.
3. itâs okay if you stay the whole day in bed but force yourself to get up in the morning (anytime before noon) and drink a glass of water/juice. again, depression messes up with your ability to start doing things, but if you concentrate your will to just get up and drink something before going back to bed, i promise youâll feel less shitty and might actually end up getting up for good since youâve been through the trouble of getting up. Youâll feel better (and also you need water!)
4. do one (1) physical, material thing that will improve your life conditions per day. aka: washing a single glass, scrubbing the mirror, etc. youâll feel proud of yourself, and the tidiest your environment, the less shitty your brain will be. plus, again: if you manage to wash a single dish, maybe youâll find yourself cleaning the whole kitchen without noticing. and thats a good thing. no pressure: just do one single thing. and donât beat yourself up if you canât, of course, but try, itâs gonna be better that way.Â
5. open the window (especially at night, i personally find it very soothing) and just⌠breathe fresh air, looking at the horizon or closing your eyes, and breathe in and out slowly. itâs great to take fresh air. bonus if you have anxiety/ptsd, honestly. opening the windows is one of the easiest ways i know to stop a panic attack.
6. brush your teeth everyday, even if itâs the only thing you manage to do. i know every depression guide recommends it, but itâs really important. not showering for a few days is okay, youâre not gonna get sick that way. but dental hygiene is capital. not to mention youâll feel less rotting in the inside if youâre less rotting in the outside. you can use your phone to schedule your teeth brushing of the day! really helps.Â
7. think about your hobbies and force yourself to do something related to an old hobby of yours. i know itâs no fun. i know you canât feel anything, so why bother? but really, do bother. do it and eventually as you recover it will be fun again. you havenât lost your passion, your goals, your motivation. itâs still there, but depression is like a blanket that covers it all. forcing yourself to still act on your hobbies (especially if those are not screen-related: books, gardening, etc.) will help digging through the depression layers to expose your will to live again. trust me on this one. i really thought i was just an apathetic mess, but actually depression was just mean. i believe in you!Â
and finally:Â hold tight and itâs gonna be okay! recovery is possible, and itâs gonna arrive sooner than you expect. energy and motivation are good things and theyâre still around here waiting for you!Â
feel free to add your own! youâre all gonna make it i promise.

Advice for College Freshman
Iâm about to scream this because I still see freshman do this. Donât buy your books before your first day of class! Just donât. This also includes most materials as well such as folders or calculators. Itâs tempting to show up prepared but unless itâs a reading class it may come to bite you in the butt since a lot of professors donât use their books.
Check for PDFs of books before you buy them. Itâs a quick google and you may get lucky. If not your best option is Amazon or a bookstore that sells used books because the school bookstore will sell them to you for a higher price.
Be a try-hard the first few months of school, while the idea is to be consistent if something bad happens if you put the effort in the beginning, it will help you balance out your grade at the end of the semester. Plus the professor might take pity on you due to having done well earlier.
Youâll likely try to join a lot of clubs or none at all. I recommend you pick three you really love and try to participate as much as you can. No one will hate you if you have to quit. On a side note if you plan to take leadership positions you may rather pick one club to focus on and lead. Two if you are wild.
Itâs okay if you donât feel like you belong during your first year. Some people may take longer to make friends, donât take that as an excuse to exclude yourself and give up trying. Keep trying!
Befriend your advisor. They will be your eyes and ears around campus. If you befriend them youâll have a powerful ally as they will know every important event and opportunity on campus.Â
Donât be afraid to approach your professors. Iâm guilty of this, but if you truly make an effort to build a bond it can be extremely rewarding. They can become great mentors and a good source when you need recommendations.
Some work experiences might look better in your resume than others, even if it means being paid less. If you want to be a tutor, working with students and being a tutor might be more beneficial to you then working a desk job at a tech company. Which they can connect in some aspects, my point is to think carefully on how youâll resume will look in the long run.
Your school will have a lot of resources to show you how to adult. Use them! An example is career services, it can help you make a resume and direct you to the best sites to apply for jobs. They have workshops on rocking an interview, public speaking and more. Take advantage of it!
Lastly, if your mental health is at risk, reach out. Theirs many sources from your university and outside that can assist you. Be kind to yourself and donât feel embarrassed if therapy is part of the picture. College is not just about working on just your studies and career, you also must work on yourself and your emotional wellbeing,Â

Weekly study schedule printable
After releasing my monthly calendar printables in several colours, I decided to publish my study schedule with a few different options in design and colour! Iâve had so many people say theyâve been really helpful and that makes me so happy! Iâm just pleased to know that something small Iâve done has the ability to help someone who needs a little bit of organisation in their lives.
For ease, Iâve created entire Google Drive folders for the timetables starting on either a Monday or Sunday. You can then go through to pick whether youâd like it with or without times on the left-hand side. Then you can pick a colour, download it and print! Click the links below to access the PDF files.
Monday start (includes with and without times, and four different colours)
Sunday start (includes with and without times, and four different colours)
If you need some inspiration on how to use your new timetable, check out my sample! Other examples you can see on my blog or on my tagged photos on Instagram!
I hope you enjoy using these and if so, Iâd love to see them in action! Feel free to tag me on Tumblr with #emmastudies or on Instagram with my username @emmastudiess in any photos you upload. If there are any problems or errors, please let me know via my inbox.
Disclaimer: This printable is for personal use only. You may edit it yourself if you like, but please do not redistribute without my permission. Thank you! Â

There are a ton of masterposts like this floating around, but you can never have to much advice for baby studyblrs!
Before we start, some studyblr terms + things:
studyblr=study+tumblr (your blog)
studyspo=study+inspiration (photos of notes etc)
studygram=study+instagram
studytube=study+youtube
appblr=application+tumblr (college application blog)
this post probably answers any more questions than I can answer here
Step 1: create your tumblr
The most important step, obviously. Will you make your studyblr a sideblog or a main blog? Both have their merits:
a sideblog if you already have a main and donât want to keep switching accounts
a main blog if your studyblr will be your main focus or you donât already have a tumblr
Step 2: your look
This is basically your URL, your theme, and your icon. None on these are set in stone, you can change them whenever you want, but I like having consistency and it makes it easy for people to find you.
Tips for your URL:
make it related to studying~you can have things like stationery items, yourname+studies, anything! (probably a given but I thought I should say it)
make it short. coffeeandpens is easier to remember that the-boy
-who-studies-ancient-greek-literature-257963. Of course thereâs nothing really wrong with the second one, but itâs long and a lot harder to remember than coffeeandpens
make your URL the same on all your platforms so that itâs easier to find you
check out @studyquillââs studyblr URL generator if youâre stuck!
Tips for your icon:
if youâve gone through a few studyblrs, youâll probably see that the most popular type of icons are vector icons. A ton of studyblrs have made free icons for the community (me included) and you can usually find them in the tag #studyblr icons and on @studyblr-iconsâ
you can also find icons on flaticon (make sure you credit them somewehere!)
but it doesnât have to be a vector! you can use a selfie, photos of your notes, a photo of a celebrity/something from a fandom youâre in, anything!
Check out these posts for more icon tips: 1 | 2 | 3
Your blog theme:
I prefer 1 column themes over multiple columns because itâs easier to read masterposts when they arenât in super thin columns
donât make your text super small (it doesnât need to be huge but anything under 9px I think is too small for body font)
@roxiestheme
@neonbikethemes
@sorrism
@enchantedthemes
@acuite
or you can check out @theme-hunter and they have a million amazing themes!
Step 3: your content
Creating original content is hands down the best way to gain followers, but donât refrain from posting because your notes arenât aesthetic enough. No one will laugh or judge, and donât be discouraged if your posts donât immediately start getting notes. Post whatever youâre interested in and whatever youâre studying. There are (roughly) three types of posts to create for your blog: studyspo, masterposts, and graphics (and printables). Check out my studyspo, masterpost, and graphics/printables tags if you need inspiration.
Check out these posts for studyspo tips: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5
Look at this masterpost for masterpost tips
Step 4: getting noticed
Hereâs the deal: we all want our posts and blogs to get noticed. Itâs nice to get notes and followers, and thereâs nothing wrong with that. That being said, itâs frustrating when your blog doesnât grow as quickly as you expected, so hopefully these tips will help you:
the first post a lot of people make is an introduction post (check out intro posts I was tagged in for format ideas). They serve as a little about me and I love reblogging them!
a lot of studyblrs have tags that they track so if you use their tag (for examble #rhubarbstudies) theyâll see it and reblog it (look at this list for some studyblrs to tag)
use popular studyblr tags: #studyblr, #studyspo, #studyinspo, #new studyblr
post consistently. Posting every day will eventually add up to notes and followers, trust me.
Step 5: making friends
My studyblr friends are a huge reason why the study community has been so enjoyable for me. Making friends can be daunting, but itâs totally worth it
some networks: @homework-help-network @smallstudyblrsunite @studyblrindex @k-studynet @sapphicstudynet
my advice is to join a network with a theme and/or a group chat instead on just an index if you really want to meet people
some more posts like this: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6
Lastly:
Donât be intimidated by the studyblrs with super aesthetic posts that get thousands of notes, they all started as new studyblrs. And maybe theyâve had their blogs for years, but literally every single studyblr has started off with 0 followers. Whatâs more, you donât have to aspire to be those blogs at all. Perfect lettering and crisp lighting and a multitude of stationery is lovely, but donât worry if you donât have content like that. Your studyblr is about you and your journey. Good luck!

hey do you know much about creating icons? i was just wondering how i could make my own and how people get the cool mildliners and notebooks as their icons
Iâve been getting asks about how I make my icons, so I figured Iâd make a mini masterpost on it. These are the basic steps I go through when making an icon
there are tons of different icons you can make: check out my icons tag for inspiration!
what I use: Adobe Illustrator canva. If youâre broke or too scared to torrent this is probably your best bet. You have to sign up, but itâs completely free
Create your document: any size bigger than 400x400px is probably fine, but make sure that itâs a square shape (do this by going to create a design â use custom dimensions)
a âlil note: canva does this annoying thing where if youâre zoomed in or out all of the shapes will be slightly off. Unless itâs at 100%, the preview you see wonât be accurate, which is annoying when youâre making something with a lot of shapes
find a reference image: whatever your icon will be, a pen, a book, a calculator, a reference image will help immensely with accuracy and amount of effort going into your icon (I used this photo for the leuchtturmicon)
background color: I usually start with a light grey so that it contrasts with al the color Iâm using in the icon, then I change it at the end if i need to (do this by going to background â document colors)
create your icon!: easier said than done, obviously. canva doesnât have a pen tool, so you have to take the shapes they give you and build on them. Notebooks are probably the easiest; just use rectangles, and youâre good. For more complex shapes, you have to take several shapes and put them together. If I was making a notebook with rounded edges on one side, I would use a rectangle for the base then put a rounded rectangle overlapping one side that makes no sense Iâm sorry Itâs often really tedious and a bit complicated to test with different shapes, so message me or send an ask if you have any specific questions. (shapes and things are in elements â shapes)
logos and things: because canva is so limited with shapes, theres basically no way to make company logos. What I do is google search the logos then drag them into the uploads box on the left side of the screen. Then I just add them to the icon (thatâs what I did on the rhodia and muji notebooks in this and the kanken in this). If you canât find the icons in the right colors or with transparent backgrounds, put them in LunaPic and go to edit â transparent background and adjust â color changer.
color scheme: Iâm super lazy about color, and I usually use the extension Palette Creator to create a palette for my reference image and I use those. Tip for lazy people: light/low saturation colors are basically foolproof
add shadows: if you want to. Shadows add dimension, but they are also very tedious to do if you made your icon with lots of different shapes. There are two basic types of shadows you can make (these or the book icon in this).
add any other details you didnât add before-compare your reference image and your icon
save your icon!!
and thats it! hope this helped at least some of you, and message me or send an ask if you need any more specific help
