The moment Andrew put Neil's hand on his chest and Neil repeated Andrew's words back to him; "I won't be like them, and I won't let you let me be.", is such an important moment in their romance.

It's where Andrew starts really letting go. He gave Neil ground. And he didn't take it because he knew better than to accept the nonverbal permission. Giving ground doesn't mean it's ready to be taken. Andrew had always made his needs very clear, and his boundaries.

Neil took exactly what Andrew gave. No more. No less. A hand in the center of his chest. To an outsiders perspective it might not be very important but to Andrew it would've been everything.

It means he could fully trust Neil, as much as he is capable of. It's further proof that Neil wouldn't take advantage of him, push too hard, none of it. It means that for once this nothing didn't have to stay nothing. It could be something. Maybe not now, but in the future.

Andrew gave Neil a key and called it home, and Neil gave Andrew safety and called it something.

It's been years, Andrew and Neil have finally retired from playing exy. The reporter who was hired solely to cover their relationship is finally free after the very last story of them.

They go home late that night again, alone. They pick up their cat and sigh in relief that they can finally retire. They never have to think about Andrew Minyard or Neil Minyard-Josten again. Finally they were able to discover something about themselves. Figure out their own interests. Find love. Retirement was going to be beautiful.

The next day they wake up late, the first time they've been able to sleep in since starting as a reporter. They go and open the curtains and the sliding door to let the cat outside.

Neil Josten-Minyard is right there. On the opposite lawn. They stare at eachother in shock and both turn and run back into their respective houses.

The next day the reporter calls and asks for their job back, covering something else, anything else. There was no escaping the Josten-Minyard hell.
