HP Family Headcanons:
Mostly canon compliant, largely based on shit I made up. The ones subject to the most change are the ones where I literally change their race and/or nationality.
Families This Post Includes: Potterâs, Blackâs, Weasleyâs, Malfoyâs, Lupinâs, Princeâs, Gauntâs, Longbottomâs, Rosierâs, Pettigrewâs, Nottâs, Parkinsonâs, Greengrassâ.
Potterâs:
The Potterâs were never actually on the sacred list despite canonically being a mostly pureblood family, which means theyâre either descended from muggle-bornâs or theyâre not from Britain.
Potter is an English surname meaning craftsman (specifically in the form of pottery), so itâs safe to assume they possibly did originate in Britain, or maybe they translated their name. And considering my headcanons for other families, it would have to mean they arenât entirely pureblood.
My headcanon is that the Potterâs started off as a muggle-born couple from Spain, selling their pottery internationally. Probably starting off as the Alfarero House, since Alfarero roughly translates to Potter.
A woman by the name of Celestina Peverell, a descendant of Ignotus Peverell, moved to Spain along with an invisibility cloak she stole from her father in an attempt to hide from her pureblood duties in which she would be forced to marry Brutus Weasley.
While there, she met Javier Alfarero and the two of them fell in love. She shortened her name to Celeste in the hopes that her family and Brutus would never be able to track her down, and passed the invisibility cloak down to her son in case he should ever need it.
Their descendant, Agustin Alfarero, travelled to Britain to set up an Alfarero House, translating it to Potter House. From there, he chose to also translate his surname to Potter.
Agustin met a witch when her pureblood family was visiting from Brazil named Marcia Azevedo. They fell in love and she moved to Britain to be with him. They named their first son Enrique, although he eventually changed it to the English Henry. Their second son was named Charlus Potter.
The Potterâs were not originally too fussed on Hogwarts houses, having historically attended the less well-known school of La Academia De Magos, which was the only magical school in Spain, hence its name. Henry and Charlus were however both sorted into Gryffindor, and were taught by their classmates to not trust the Slytherins.
The Potterâs frequently holidayâd in Spain and Brazil, and Henry moved to Spain for a while to be with a pureblood witch named Sofia Fernandez, before the two of them moved back to Britain to take care of his sick parents.
Charlus Potter soon after married Dorea Black, and they moved to France together where they had their only son, August Potter, named after Charlusâ late father.
Henry and Sofia had their son in Britain, and named him Fleamont Charles Potter, after Henryâs godfather Filimon Prince II and Henryâs brother Charlus.
Fleamont did not continue the family business of pottery making, and instead took to potioneering, developing a series of hair care products that worked for curly hair like his, adding to the already immense Potter fortune.
Fleamont met Euphemia Moon while at Hogwarts, but only developed a relationship with her years after. They married and took on her families religion of Islam, raising their son James Potter on those views.
August Potter ended up living with a âclose male companionâ (gay cousin alert) named Elliott Dupont. They were even said to have two pet cats together that they called their children.
James Potter married a muggle-born Jewish girl named Lily Evans. The two had a son that they named Harry, after Lilyâs father Harrison Evans, but unfortunately had to go into hiding quickly after.
James and Lily died when their son was only one years old, and the boy moved in with his white muggle family, Vernon and Petunia Dursley (formerly Evans).
Harry ended up marrying a woman named Ginevra Weasley, a fact that likely would have displeased Celeste Alfarero, and going down a Ministry career path which ended with him being the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
They had three children together, James Sirius Potter, Albus Severus Potter and Lily Luna Potter, all named after people important to Harry and Ginevra.
James II eventually shortened his name to Jace, and married a girl named Alice Longbottom, taking her surname instead of keeping his own. He also ended up becoming a Healer and the two of them had a son named Zachary Longbottom.
Albus caused quite the controversy within his family being the first to not be sorted into Gryffindor since moving to England. He was sorted into Slytherin. He was also the first openly gay Potter (*cough cough* erasing Jaceâs bisexuality and Augustâs very gay love story *cough*) and married his best friend Scorpius Malfoy. The two apparently had no kids together.
Albus also ran away from home at some point during his youth after being hospitalised for psychosis, and took up an apprenticeship at a tattoo shop.
Lily II ended up exploring the world and getting a job in photography before getting married to her long-term boyfriend Lysander Scamander. Due to Lilyâs inability to carry, they adopted two kids, a boy and a girl, Liam and Caroline Scamander.
These three mark the end of the Potter name.
Blackâs:
The Blackâs really got their DNA mixed into every family didnât they? Like they got the Potterâs and the Moonâs by extension, the Weasleyâs, the Rosierâs, the Lestrangeâs and the Lovegoodâs by extension, the Malfoyâs and the Greengrassâs by extension, the Lupinâs, the Longbottomâs, the Prewettâs, the Gauntâs. They got everyone.
The Blackâs are on the sacred list, and based on their title of The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, we can assume that they were quite a powerful and influential family, with extremely old and ancient roots. This would likely mean they helped pioneer the fight to keep magic hidden from muggleâs.
The Blackâs have their family roots in the ancient cities of The Roman Empire, being descendants of Gaius Seutonius Paulinus, famous for defeating the Celtic Queen Boudicea and her army of First Nations Britons (such a weird thing to say but itâs a historical fact) during the Boudicean Revolt of 60-61 BCE. Suetonius was not a good person btw.
Black as a surname was given to people for quite literally having black hair and pale skin. This would likely mean that the Blackâs were given this name at some point after the fall of the Roman Empire, but most likely around the fourteenth century.
However, due to the characters Artemisia, Apollonia and Licorus (why the fuck is there a canon character named liquorish?) Blackwoodâs canonically being ancestors, it would perhaps be more accurate to say that in the early fourteenth century their name was Blackwood, and it was changed later.
The seventeenth century is when the International Statute of Secrecy was put into place, and by this point the Blackwoodâs would have firmly secured their place as a powerful and wealthy pureblood family as the descendants of Seutonius, and used this influence to bring as many purebloodâs to their side as possible. Due to how many formerly muggle-loving families end up close to the Blackwoodâs, we can safely say they played a major role in this bills success.
I think this is when the switch from Blackwood to Black likely occurred, in order to wipe their family from muggle records and remain hidden. I also think this would have started a trend and that is why so many wizard families have such strange names.
This would mean the Blackâs were famous not only in Britain, but also on a global scale. Think of them like the royal family of the wizarding world. Everyone has heard of them, everyone keeps up with them, and itâs a big deal when one marries or dies. This is how they earned the title of The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black.
For this reason the Blackâs took their blood status and public image very seriously, not a single hair out of place because someone somewhere in the world was guaranteed to notice. This is also why when a family member left they made such a big deal of burning their picture on the family tree.
I canât be fucked going through the whole family tree and I one hundred percent ignored the Potterâs canon family tree for the most part, so keep that in mind.
Artemisia Blackwood was apparently disowned, as was her nephew Eduardus Black (fucking hell, Liquorish had something like six kids). Iola Black, Phineas Black, Cedrella Black, Marius Black, Andromeda Black and Sirius Black III were also all disowned, Sirius III being the first to have the Black name to not be sorted into Slytherin.
Bellatrix Black, the older sister of Andromeda, married Rodolphus Lestrange and had an adulterous pregnancy to Tom Marvolo Riddleâs child, Delphini Riddle.
Andromeda Black married a muggle-born man, Edward Tonks, and had a daughter named Nymphadora Tonks.
Narcissa Black, Andromedaâs younger sister, married Lucius Malfoy and had a son named Draco Malfoy.
Sirius III and his younger brother Regulus II, reportedly never got married. Sirius was originally to marry Ingrid Leifsdottir, a pureblood from Scandinavia, but reportedly never lived up to that expectation. Regulus was to marry Pandora Lestrange, however she was disowned from her family and he died before meeting anyone else.
And that is where the Black name ends.
Weasleyâs:
The Weasleyâs are on the sacred list, meaning theyâre an old enough family to have likely had some influence during the witch trials. Which would mean according to prior headcanon their name used to be different.
Due to the use of Weaselby as an insult, one that seems to come out of nowhere but angers the family greatly, it is a reasonable assumption that this was once their name.
They also have a blood relation to the Flint, Yaxley and Crouch families, which means they very likely used to be quite powerful within the pureblood community. The Weaselbyâs were most likely originally supremacists, and the name is likely insulting due to it being a reminder of how far they had fallen.
The Weasleyâs likely changed their name a few years after the Blackâs, once it had become a bit of a trend. The Weasleyâs likely had a massive wealth at this time as well, since many of the Weasleyâs seemed to have been the entrepreneurial type.
Public perception changed when Brutus Weasley was to marry Celestina Peverell, who went as far as to flee the country to stay away from him. Due to this dip in reputation, less people were buying from the Weasley family businesses, and so most of them ended up going bankrupt.
Garreth Weasley, from a few generations later, would experiment on his family members with his potions, likely sucking up a decent portion of the funds and causing the Weasleyâs to become more frugal. Their experiences on the receiving end of Garrethâs experimental potions also likely kickstarted their change of opinion when it came to dark magic.
Garrethâs grandson, Septimus Weasley, was the first to turn away from pureblood supremacy when he ran away with the disgraced Cedrella Black to research the scientific achievements of muggles. Septimus and his siblings likely squandered their families fortune to be less substantial than many other purebloodâs.
Septimus served as an Auror, losing much of his wealth to the Grindelwars, along with his siblings who quickly joined his side during this time.
Septimus and Cedrellaâs children, Ignatius III, Ortensia II, Arthur and Bilius, received their share of the remaining fortune, with Ortensia II and Arthur being the only ones to start families.
Ortensia married a muggle man named David Wallace and moved to the USA to be with him, while Arthur married the pureblood Molly Prewett.
Arthur and Molly lost much of their money during the first Voldine wars, and to their first three children, William, Charles and Perseus. Arthur moved from Auror work to be the Head of the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office in the hopes that he might receive better pay.
He and his wife also had four other children, Frederick, George, Ronald and Ginevra.
William got a job as a curse breaker and Charles moved to Romania to work as a dragon tamer. Perseus started working for the Ministry, Frederick and George dropped out of high school to start Weasleyâs Wizard Wheezes which achieved great success.
William married during this time, a French girl with Veela heritage named Fleur Delacour and they later had their first daughter Victoire Weasley.
Ronald started working as an Auror before they had their second child, Dominique (âDom/Nyxâ we stan a demigirl) Weasley. During this time Perseus also got married to a Welsh witch named Audrey Emerson.
Perseus and Audrey had Molly II and Lucy, George married Angelina Johnson, Ronald married a muggle-born Hermione Granger and Ginevra married Harry Potter.
William, George and Ginevra all had kids around the same time, Louis Weasley, Frederick Weasley II and James Potter respectively. Then came Ronaldâs daughter and Ginevraâs son, Rose Granger-Weasley and Albus Potter. Then George had a daughter, Roxanne Weasley. Ginevra and Ronald had their last kids Lily Potter and Hugo Granger-Weasley.
Victoire married Teddy Lupin and they had a daughter, Dora Lupin. Dominique married Delphi Riddle and they had no kids. Louis married no one but did adopt a daughter, Eloise Weasley.
Molly II married Esmee Winter, and the two had no kids. Lucy married Lionel Butterfield and they had two kids together, Eric and Wyatt Butterfield.
Frederick II married Frank Longbottom II and had no kids. Roxanne engaged in a platonic marriage with Theta Cornfoot and had an IVF son named Caleb Weasley-Cornfoot.
Rose Granger-Weasley never married but did have a romantic relationship with Auggie Longbottom. Hugo Granger-Weasley married Lorcan Scamander and the two took the singular Granger surname.
And I am not going through Eloise and Calebâs lives so figure that out yourselves.
Malfoyâs:
Malfoy is a French name that quite literally means âbad faithâ, so this would imply the family originate in France and that the country of origin doesnât actually matter too much when it comes to the sacred list. Therefore, the Potterâs couldnât be entirely pureblood.
A fun canonical fact about the Malfoy family is that they are technically not entirely pureblood, but not for the reasons you think. The Malfoyâs amassed their great wealth through their relationships to wealthy and important muggle families. This is a canon fact guys.
The Malfoyâs likely originated in France, developing a strong bond with the French royal family. A cousin of theirs, Anne Boleyn, however moved to Britain to be with Henry VIII. But after being discovered as a witch she was beheaded.
This, and various other incidents of beheading over the decades, which magic could not protect them from, helped with the idea of the International Statute of Secrecy. And yet, despite their ancestor being beheaded, the Malfoyâs did not want this bill to go forward.
The Malfoyâs were enjoying their life of luxury, something they could only afford because of their relationship with muggles and specifically wealthy muggle families. They changed the tune of their song when it became clear the bill was going to pass.
The Malfoyâs moved to Britain as they switched sides, since the Malfoyâs at that time were not all that well known in Britain and no one would question their sudden change of opinion. They were also placed on the sacred list despite having generations of muggle blood, and even some Veela blood.
Because of this move, their name was not easily recognisable in Britain and so they felt no need to change it. They also didnât want to completely erase their history of relations with royalty.
They developed a reputation in Britain for obtaining and selling dark artefacts due to the plethora of objects gifted to them by the French royal family, and began what could essentially be considered a French mafia in wizarding Britain.
With dark magic beginning to lose public favour, and being labelled as evil, the Malfoyâs had to take their business underground, and only the most ancient British families were aware of their dealings fo the most part. If you wanted a trinket, you went to the Malfoyâs.
Armand Malfoy had a close relationship to the Filchâs, which allowed him to access many dark artefacts previously unheard of, giving a small cut of the profits to the Filchâs. And if anyone found out about these underhanded deals, Armand would send someone to deal with them.
The Malfoyâs took pride in being a Slytherin family, using serpent iconography in their own family crest to emulate the house. Likely a bid to further hide the shameful muggle blood in their heritage.
The Malfoyâs also had a history of taking brides from places such as France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. This was their attempt to stay pure without interfering too much with the existing British pureblood lines.
Abraxas Malfoy took a Belgian woman, Penelope Babineaux, as his wife and had three children. His eldest was a girl, Merita Malfoy, who married into a pureblood Dutch family and brought the family business of seeking dark artefacts to the Netherlands. Lucius Malfoy II, was his eldest son and therefore heir, although they had another son as well, Poseidon Malfoy.
Lucius II was originally to marry Horatia Accrington to strengthen bonds within the British wizarding world and get ahold of some family heirlooms, however Horatia chose to marry another man, Romulus Greengrass instead, and Lucius had a rushed arrangement with the slightly younger Narcissa Black. This was a much more favourable option, and with the Blackâs and Greengrassâ rivaling for centuries it served as a somewhat petty political arrangement.
Poseidon never married, although he had many unsuccessful courting attempts throughout his life.
Lucius focused less on the underhanded business deals of his family, instead finding dark artefacts to serve as a very useful demonstration of wealth and power. The Malfoyâs had gathered enough wealth that he really did not need to continue running the mafia anyway, and it mostly moved to the Netherlands with his sister and her husband.
Lucius and Narcissa had a son, Draco Malfoy, who grew up and abandoned his families pureblood supremacist views and left behind the underground dark deals of his family. He studied to become a Healer (nurse) and left his betrothed, Pansy Parkinson, at the alter to marry Astoria Greengrass. A fact which greatly displeased both of his parents.
Draco and Astoria ended up adopting Dracoâs cousin, Delphi Riddle, when she was young and later had their son Scorpius Malfoy. Astoria died before either of the children married, having inherited a blood curse from her mother, that for some strange reason wasnât passed onto Scorpius.
Draco later remarried to a muggle man named Jonathan Young, and the two grew old together in the Malfoy Manor.
Delphi married into the Weasley family, specifically Dominique Weasley, and the two had no children. Scorpius married his best friend Albus Potter, and these two also reportedly had no children.
And that marks the end of the Malfoy name.
Lupinâs:
Itâs unclear whether the Lupinâs were ever on the sacred list, but it is a very reasonable assumption to say that they spent most of history being a pureblood family, and as a result, were.
Iâve heard headcanons that the Lupin family have some history with werewolves, and I have decided to have a slightly different take on it. Since we know Lyall Lupin originally despised werewolves, is it possible they got their name Lupin from hunting wolves?
The Lupinâs were originally an American pureblood family, solely because they moved to America during the time slave trades that occurred between Britain, Africa and the Americas. Not as African Americans, as British colonisers, setting up a civilised and white wizarding society within the USA.
The Lupinâs had a business of killing wolves for their pelts and selling them to be made into expensive wizard robes. They contributed a considerable amount to the culling of the wolf population, and didnât even stop when there were concerns that some of these wolves might have been werewolves.
The concern for werewolves grew in America before anywhere else due to the muggles own religious fears. Many muggle-borns brought these fears into the wizarding world, and werewolves, which had always been very rare, became somewhat of a target.
The Lupinâs, due to their history of killing wolves for designer cloaks, got a lot of attention due to this. Originally they were praised as great heroes for protecting people from the treacherous monsters of the night, but as public opinion changed in America, the Lupinâs began to be treated with much more dislike.
Due to this, Adolphus Lupin moved his wife and kids to Britain in order to keep the family business afloat. Wolves were however much harder to come by in Britain, so they incorporated more feathers and scales into their designs since snakes seemed to be popular among purebloodâs and there seemed to be a feathery trend in Britain.
The Lupinâs started attending Hogwarts, not caring much for house but mostly ending up in Ravenclaw and on occasion Slytherin.
During the goblin uprising, the morals of using endangered animals skin as fabric was brought into question, and several other fashion businesses popped up, leaving the Lupinâs with fewer and fewer customers until they eventually went bankrupt.
John Lupin was particularly upset with this, and ended up getting a job in the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures to combat some of the controversy his family was facing, serving as something of a rival to Newton Scamander.
John married Isabella Grove, a British pureblood of Chilean decent, and they tried to raise their son, Lyall Lupin, to be interested in monsters and creatures.
This backfired when Lyall wanted to understand creatures, although he did share their supremacist views against halfbreeds. He became so interested in the creatures his parents warned him about that he too ended up working for the DRCMC, trying to remove specifically the dangerous creatures and take care of the harmless ones.
Lyall married a muggle woman, Hope Howell, and together they had a child Remus Lupin. However, when Remus was four he became the very thing his family had despised for generations.
After Lyall insulted werewolves during the trial of Fenrir Greyback, Fenrir made the choice to break into Lyallâs house and turn Remus into one as revenge. Lyallâs own child being a werewolf was what it took for the Lupinâs to change their views on creatures and halfbloods.
Remus was worried he wouldnât get to go to Hogwarts, however he did attend as the first Lupin to be sorted into Gryffindor, something his family likely did not care about.
Remus found it difficult to maintain jobs because of his condition, eventually falling below the poverty line before marrying a much younger metamorphmagus, Nymphedora Tonks.
They had their son, Edward âTeddyâ (demiboy icon) Lupin, named after Nymphadoraâs father, who much to their relief did not inherit a case of lycanthropy nearly as severe as his father. Shortly after, Remus and Nymphadora died, leaving Teddy to be raised by his maternal grandmother Andromeda Tonks.
Teddy became the first Lupin to be sorted into Hufflepuff, and ended up marrying Victoire Weasley. The two had a daughter together, Dora Lupin, and that is where Iâm finishing.
Princeâs:
There is almost no canon for this family and that is so scary. I guess it just means I have to make everything up myself.
Prince was a surname given to people for having a regal set of behaviours or sometimes it was a surname won through a trial of some kind. It did not actually mean you were descended from royalty. And for the Prince family, I like to believe they got this surname through a victory. This specific trial was being the first wizards to tame a dragon.
In fact, dragons had been such a big part of the Prince families wealth, taming dragons to protect vaults or other high risk places, that many of them were named Dracule, Draconius, and other such names.
For this reason, they were probably very proud of their surname, and so while the Blackâs started a trend of changing your surname to further hide your family from existence, I donât think the Princeâs went along with this trend.
Wyvernus Prince moved to Romania at some point to start a dragon sanctuary, that would care for the many dragons becoming endangered species since the Lupinâs had moved to Britain.
Wyvernus formed a strenuous relationship with the Scamanderâs as they had similar ambitions to protect magical wildlife, but disagreed on matters of blood status.
While in Romania, Wyvernus fell in love with the pureblooded Ruxandra Codrin, whose father served in the Romanian kings court. They had multiple children, Filimon Prince, Drakonya Prince and Petrut Prince.
The Princeâs only returned, generations later, to Britain when Newton and Theseus Scamander called on their help to fight in the Grindelwars.
Due to this the Princeâs were relatively out of the loop when it came to Britain wizarding society. Filimon Prince II chose to stay in Britain while his younger siblings moved back to Romania to care for their dragons. Unlike his siblings, whose views quickly adopted to accept all blood statuses, Filimon II remained steadfast in his belief that muggles and muggle-borns were inherently weaker, and that halfbreeds were abominations.
This belief remained within the proudly Slytherin Prince family up until Eileen Prince. She was shunned from her family and fell in love with a muggle man named Tobias Snape. Together they had a child, Severus Snape, who never married or had any kids of his own.
This marks the end of the Prince name.
Gauntâs:
The Gauntâs were famously descendants of Salazar Slytherin, a fact that was probably less advertised when people started to believe Slytherins were all evil, which seems to have happened before the events of HL but couldnât have been too far into the past.
Gaunt is also a name which means lean, haggard, grim and desolate in appearance, mostly due to poor health or maintenance in the context of architecture. I believe they would have gotten this name the same way the Blackâs and Weasleyâs got theirs, by changing it themselves after the International Statute of Secrecy was passed.
The Slytherinâs, as they were originally called, developed their parseltongue ability due to the union of Neptunis Slytherin and Medusa Serpentine, who had been cursed to be a gorgon. Due to the Slytherin family actively practicing this skill, and even incorporating snakes into their family emblem, the skill never faded, unlike how other creature blood may lose its potency with the skills going unpracticed.
Pythonus Slytherin eventually married Corvua Peverell, a descendant of Cadmus Peverell. She had been gifted stone which would allow her to connect with the dead, and this stone was fashioned into a ring that was passed down through the Slytherin family.
Salazar Slytherin was orphaned when his parents, Pythonus Slytherin II and Cordelia Slytherin, were drowned during the witch trials. He fled his home town and took up refuge with three other warlocks, a family locket and the ring being the only things of theirs he had left. Salazar later returned to his home town to destroy it as revenge for killing his parents, specifically by flooding the town and laying it to waste.
His friends found this town years later, after it became a safe haven for warlocks, and used the castle to start up a school, Hogwarts. Salazar, having lived in this town with his parents being close to the royal family, knew about many places within the castle he could use to his advantage.
Salazar chose to use the dungeons as his sanctuary because it looked into the very lake his parents died in, and it allowed him to use some of the more hidden cells as rooms his friends would never know about. He created three secret rooms within the castle.
The first was a small room he could use to travel to a friends house, who was spying on the muggles and making sure they never found out about the school. The second was a Scriptorium, which he hid behind many puzzles and wards, detailing his disputes with his friends and his plans to make sure no muggle found out about the school.
The final was something later titled the Chamber of Secrets, which housed a basilisk he had caught and tamed to do the bidding of anyone that shared his blood, hoping his heirs might eradicate any muggle-borns within the school walls. His hopes with this was that when muggles started learning about the school and starting an uprising, the basilisk would scare them away.
His friends were however becoming suspicious of him, and he was forced to have the entrance to this chamber be somewhere his friends would never find, even if they found the others.
Salazar kept these rooms hidden, making sure no one could ever interfere with his plans to keep the school as hidden from muggles and their magical offspring as humanly possible.
The family name switched to Gaunt shortly after the Blackâs switched their name, which bolstered the name changes popularity within pureblood families across Britain in particular. Of course, the Gaunt name lost some of its prevalence over the years due to not sharing any similarities with the original family name.
The Gauntâs ended up having to hide the parselmouth abilities as more and more families began to associate it with the darkest and most evil of magic, something that would have been detrimental to their family as muggle-borns and squibs began to get more rights.
Noctua Gaunt was the first of her family to turn away from their pureblood supremacist views and do deeper research into her family history. She could not find any records in general libraries due to the Gauntâs hiding their Slytherin heritage for the most part, but did figure out that if Salazar had one secret room in the dungeons, he likely had others. This led to her discovering the existence of the Scriptorium.
Noctua kept this a secret from the rest of her family in case it contained dark artefacts or horrible spell books. She did tell her disabled nephew, Ominis Gaunt about it, due to him sharing similar anti-supremacist views as her. She died at the entrance of the Scriptorium, unable to complete the final puzzle to get it open.
Ominis Gaunt and some of his friends later found this Scriptorium, and completed the final puzzle, which had been a task so horrendous Ominis was never able forgive his friend. Ominis found information on his family and the Chamber of Secrets, and chose to hide these from his friends and the rest of his family.
Ominis Gaunt moved to the countryside, and when he died many of the journals and spell books heâd stolen from the Scriptorium were returned to his family.
Marvolo Gaunt inherited these papers, and when his children Morfin and Merope attended Hogwarts, he asked them to investigate further into the school to find these hidden rooms and keep a record of everything.
Morfin and Merope were unsuccessful. This fact greatly angered Marvolo, and he blamed the failure on his muggle-loving daughter, claiming she sabotaged her brothers search as well.
Merope fell in love with a muggle man, Tom Riddle, and hoped he would help her escape. She eventually fled her family, kidnapping the man and feeding him love potions to force him into loving her for years. Merope married this man and only stopped giving him the love potion when she found out she was pregnant, resulting in him leaving her and being admitted to a sanitarium for schizophrenia with wild claims of witches and magic.
Merope Riddle gave birth to Tom Marvolo Riddle, and died in doing so. Tom II ended up being the Slytherin to open the chamber, and later killed both sides of his family as revenge for never taking him in.
And that is where the Gaunt name ends.
Longbottomâs:
We do know that canonically the Longbottomâs were on the sacred list, therefore they are a very old family. This would imply that they also had some ancient roots. I however, do not personally headcanon them as of European descent, rather I think the Longbottomâs come from China.
Which would mean their name was definitely not Longbottom originally. Instead, their name was originally just Long, a Chinese name meaning âdragonâ. I believe they got this name because an ancestor, Long Xiu, was a great warrior and pyromancer, earning him the monicker The Dragon, or Long.
The Long family were a well respected pureblood family with ties to the military, and manufacturing of magical weaponry, so when the International Statute of Secrecy was being voted on, they had great influence over how the East voted.
The Long family had initially remained neutral, until it became clear that this secrecy would benefit their business, as their weaponry would be less likely to end up in the hands of muggles. This meant that many Eastern wizarding families also ended up wanting the bill to pass.
The name change was something almost exclusive to the West, and so the Long family, and most other Eastern families, had all kept their surnames the same.
The Long family were however pureblood supremacists for a very long time, and with their ties to the military they made it harder for muggle-borns to fight for their rights.
There was one member of the family, Long Xian, who didnât support his families views on muggle-borns needing to be eradicated, rather he thought they needed to be civilised and assimilated.
During an expedition through Europe to find new technology for the family business, he found that many Western countries were much more tolerant of his viewpoint. As a result, Long Xian moved to Britain, where he thought there might be greater efforts to assimilate muggle-borns to the pureblood way.
Long Xian kept his name, and after marrying a member of the Chang family, had a two children. Long Mei Fen and Long Wei Ming.
The Longâs attended Hogwarts where Mei Fen was sorted into Slytherin and Wei Ming was sorted into Gryffindor. Due to professors not understanding how to pronounce their names, at school they went by Maya and William respectively.
William ended up marrying Chinese royalty, courting the princess Wangxu Ai Fang.
Their surname changed from Long to Longbottom because that is what many pureblood families had been calling them, since they were the bottom of the barrel purebloodâs. Not quite supremacist but not quite blood-traitors.
Ai Fang died while giving birth to her first and only child, and to honour her William named his son Harfang. Harfang Longbottom went to school, and solidified the Longbottomâs as a Gryffindor family after his sorting.
Harfang Longbottom married Callidora Black in a last ditch effort to keep the bloodline pure and gain some relevance in pureblood society. This did not work, as their two sons Edmund and Augustine largely befriended halfbloodâs and blood-traitors while at school.
Edmund married a Korean pureblood, Tae Binna, after establishing a connection to the Korean magical military, and they named their children Augusta, Algie, Enid and Harfang II.
Harfang II married another Korean pureblood, hoping to maintain a connection to the Korean magical military. Their son was named Frances Longbottom.
Frances rose to notoriety after marrying the British pureblood, Alice Fortescue, and serving as a general during the first Voldine War. He supplied the Order of the Phoenix with expertise and weaponry, allowing them to stay afloat for at least a couple years before things took a turn for the worst.
Francesâ son, Neville Longbottom, ended up living with his aunt Augusta after Frances and Alice were tortured to catatonia by Death-Eaters. During the second Voldine War, Neville greatly assisted in the ending of the war and victory of the Order of the Phoenix.
He left the family business for a job in teaching, married a half-Vietnamese pureblood named Hannah Abbott, and had three children: Frank, Alice and Augusta âAuggieâ.
Frank married Frederick Weasley II and they had no kids together. Alice married Jace Potter, who took her surname, and they had Zachary Longbottom. And while Auggie never married they did have a long term relationship with Rose Granger-Weasley.
You can figure out what happened to Zachary Longbottom.
Rosierâs:
Rosier is a French surname meaning ârose treeâ and is also the name of a fallen angel/demon associated with love and attraction. I thought it might be interesting, given the interpretation that the Malfoyâs have some connection to Veela, that perhaps the Rosierâs have Incubus, Succubus or Concubus heritage. Preferably Concubus because I feel like they donât get enough attention.
Due to this demonic blood, I would imagine theyâd actually be able to use dark magic without causing any harm to themselves, meaning no damage to the soul or corruption of the body. This would also create a resistance against curses that may get weaker from generation to generation.
The Rosierâs I believe, due to how many times they fought on the dark side of a war, would have tried to erase this connection to demonic blood. Perhaps their original name was something more blatantly demonic, such as , LeMauvais which translates to âthe evil oneâ and I believe is a folkloric title of the devil.
There were twin brothers, and they lived together in France. Until, Rosier LeMauvais was beheaded for witchcraft, which led to Diabolos LeMauvais fleeing the country and moving to England. Once there, upon seeing the trend of changing your name to further hide your existence from muggles, Diabolos took the surname Rosier, in honour of his late twin brother.
This also allowed him to join the sacred list despite having demonic blood, because the English aristocrats were not aware of the unholy matrimony between Diabolosâ grandparents like the French were.
As such, the Rosierâs and Malfoyâs knew of each otherâs impure blood, and came to an agreement to stay hush about it.
The Rosierâs would infiltrate the Ministry as Aurors and make sure no one found out about the Malfoyâs under the table dealings while the Malfoyâs would provide them with dark artefacts at a greatly discounted price.
Because of this, the Rosierâs became infamous in the Ministry and generation after generation of Rosierâs would make it into high ranking DMLE jobs. Some even made it to the Wizengamot. This meant they had great influence on some of the laws made and the persecution of dark magic.
At some point the Rosierâs moved back to France, likely to investigate a rise of dark magic or demonic activity, something which would greatly interest them.
While there, Marcellus Rosier married a pureblood with similar familial ties to demons (in this case Succubi) named Nathara Chavrolet, while his sister, Minette Rosier, married Corvus Lestrange.
Marcellus and Nathara had one child, Lucien Rosier. Lucien attended Beauxbatons, as did many other generations of Rosierâs until the early 1900s.
Felix and Vinda Rosier joined Gellert Grindelwaldâs crusade for power while he was staying in France, and as a result followed him around the globe until they eventually ended up back in Britain.
Felix Rosier eventually married the pureblooded Dixacia Pettigrew, and they had a son named Benedictus Rosier and a daughter named Druella Rosier. Both of which were sorted into Slytherin, much like the generations of Rosierâs that had once lived in Britain.
Benedictus married Lyodra Yaxley, and had one son, Evan Rosier, while Druella married into the prestigious Black family, with Cygnus Black II, and had three daughters, Bellatrix, Andromeda and Narcissa. All of these children were sorted into Slytherin.
Evan Rosier and his parents joined the ranks of the Death-Eaters, becoming some of Voldemortâs loyal servants. They were especially useful because of their inexplicable ability to perform dark magic with minimal side effects.
Evan married the slightly older Necessitas Accrington, and together they had a son and a daughter, Felix Rosier II and Rosetta Rosier.
Necessitas Rosier had inherited a blood curse from her mother which severely weakened her and eventually led to her death, but due to the Rosierâs demonic blood this curse was not passed on to Felix II or Rosetta.
Felix II died during the battle of Hogwarts, around the same time that Necessitas died to her blood curse. Evan also died awaiting his second trial for treason and terrorism.
Rosetta married Phillip Parkinson II, and they had a daughter named Nebula Parkinson.
This marks the end of the Rosier family name.
Pettigrewâs:
The name Pettigrew is quite literally meant to be a play on how Peter was Ronâs pet rat and grew into a human, derived from petit and cru. So it literally means âfrom small to bigâ. Perhaps the Pettigrewâs derived this name from another the same way weâve claimed a lot of other families have. (Guys thereâs less canon for these guys than the Lupinâs and Princeâs. Iâm literally making this all up as I go.)
The name Vittergroot would be of Dutch origin, with vitter meaning âcriticâ and groot meaning âbigâ. Essentially, you would consider them a great critic of some sorts. This would imply the Vittergrootâs had an origin in judgement, and what greater judgement is there than law?
The Vittergroot family would have had their own law firm in the Netherlandâs, possibly Vittergroot Legal, and may have handled many accusations of witchcraft, actively working to keep witches from being sentenced to deaths they would not be able to escape, or perhaps supplying them with falsified evidence to avoid a guilty verdict at all.
Due to this, the Vittergrootâs would have had great popularity among witches, and possibly great disdain among muggles. The Vittergrootâs could have very easily been accused of witchcraft themselves, forcing them to flee to Britain.
There, they would follow the trend of changing oneâs name, and would adopt the English name Pettigrew, due to how similar it sounded to their original surname.
The Pettigrewâs would once again start up a law firm in Britain after the International Statute of Secrecy was passed, this time dealing with the persecution of muggle-borns and creatures.
Ultimately this led to them having a close relationship to many pureblood families in spite of most Pettigrewâs being in either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. Many deemed the Pettigrewâs a great ally due to their influence over whether or not a person was found guilty or innocent.
As times changed, and laws changed, the Pettigrewâs did as well. Initially they would continue to undermine the justice system to push their own supremacist agenda, but with them being in Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, they were largely surrounded by muggle-borns, halfbloods, halfbreeds and blood-traitors.
Dixacia Pettigrew was the last of her family to follow in the pureblood belief system, marrying Felix Rosier while her brother, Abraham Pettigrew, married a muggle-born named Lisandra Olivewine. This marriage removed the Pettigrewâs from the sacred list.
The Pettigrewâs would fight for the right of wizarding minorities in the generations following, until Peter Pettigrew.
Peter joined the ranks of the Death-Eaters serving as a spy and infiltrating the Order of the Phoenix. He killed many, including old friends, and eventually killed himself.
This marks the end of the Pettigrew name.
Nottâs:
Nott is a name likely derivative of the Norse Goddess Nott, the personification of night. With this name is imagine they earned it by being a family with strong ties to astronomy and divination, and perhaps some giant heritage.
With the family originating in Scandinavia, they were also likely a sea fairing family. Perhaps they made their fortune by going across the world to create star charts and map the constellations.
Iâd also imagine, much like seems to be the case with many pureblood families, their giant blood was something they kept secret. Yes they would be much taller than those around them, and would develop much more muscle, but aside from that not much else was different biologically.
Due to their travels, the Nottâs ended up having ties to important pureblood families all across the globe, and contributed greatly to the success of the International Statute of Secrecy. They, unlike the Blackwoodâs, would not change their name to something else.
Hildigunn Nott ended up making great strides in the field of Divination, learning from all different cultures around the world. He even learnt from the centaurs to develop an astrological technique to read the future. It largely ignored the zodiac, however some found many connections to the Greek zodiac.
Eventually Magnihild Nott moved to Britain in order to be with a seer woman heâd met and fallen in love with, Nictina Trelawny. Their children, Magnus Nott, Archimedes Nott and Ingrid Nott attended Hogwarts, with most ending up in Slytherin.
The following generations did not stick to one family profession like was common for pureblood families, but rather had all sorts of jobs. Often these jobs did have some connection to Astronomy or Divination.
Thanks to Cantankerus Nott and his book, The Pure-Blood Directory, the Nottâs quickly rose to be a family of prestige. This was something the wizarding world desperately needed as more and more purebloodâs turned away from supremacy.
His grandson, Fornax Nott, ended up marrying the pureblood woman Ophelia Avery, they had their four children before Ophelia eventually died. Achilles, Arnold, Theodore and Cassandra.
Achilles married a Scandinavian pureblood he met while on holiday, named Dahlia Ahlstedt. Arnold Nott also married around the same time, to Invidia Pike.
While Dahlia Nott was pregnant, Theodore was supposed to marry a woman named Electra Sallow, but instead brought shame to his family by marrying a muggle woman named Felicity Thorne.
Achilles and Dahlia had two sons, Achilles Nott Jr. and Reginald Nott. Arnold and Invidia had one son, Harold Nott. Theodore and Felicity had one daughter before they eventually divorced named Nora Nott. Cassandra never married or had any kids.
You can figure out the rest.
Parkinsonâs:
Parkinson is a name meaning âson of Parkinsâ, and Parkins means ârockâ. It is a derivative form of the Greek name Peter. So, if we are to follow along with previously established trends, perhaps their name was originally Peterson.
The Peterson family would have had great ties to the Ministry of Britain, and likely would have been considered a Ministry family with many generations of sons becoming government officials.
The Petersonâs would help pioneer the call for the International Statute of Secrecy, as they greatly despised muggles and viewed them as a much weaker race.
They changed their name to Parkinson shortly after that Blackâs started the trend.
They continued to be held in high esteem, getting the most high level Ministry jobs and marrying into the purest of bloodlines. Public perception started to shift with Perseus Parkinson I.
Perseus I was made Minister of Magic in the early 1700âs, shortly after the International Statute of Secrecy would have been passed. He tried many times to pass a bill that would further separate witches and muggles, and due to this became greatly unpopular. He was not voted in for a second term.
Centuries later, Phillip Parkinson I openly joined Grindelwaldâs crusade to have muggles bow down to them, as a superior group of people. This led to many supremacists revering the Parkinsonâs but a large portion of the public condemning them.
Descendants Pansy and Phillip II ended up bringing great shame to their family. Phillip II was to marry Astoria Greengrass, however after a scandal involving being seen kissing, the arrangement was cancelled and Phillip II was betrothed to Rosetta Rosier instead.
Even greater shame was brought to the family when his older sister Pansy was left at the alter by Draco Malfoy, who ended up marrying Astoria. Pansy apparently benefited from this though, getting a career in law and later marrying the muggle-born Justin Finch-Fletchley.
Phillip II and Rosetta had a single daughter, Nebula Parkinson, who married Hadrian Flint and had two daughters.
This marks the end of the Parkinson name.
Greengrassâ:
Would you believe me if I told you their surname literally means âgreen grassâ? This is probably not meant to be taken so literally, and is more likely connected to farming and agriculture.
Before I get into all of that, this family had a long withstanding rivalry with the Blackwoodâs. This was caused by the Greengrassâ being descendants of Boudicea, a First Nations Celtic queen who was publicly flogged and her daughters raped. (She is a real historical figure.)
Suetonius practically annihilated Boudicea and her allies when they attempted to revolt, and rather than being taken as a prisoner Boudicea poisoned herself.
Her descendants never forgave the descendants of Seutonius, or as previously established, the Blackwoodâs.
For this reason I donât think the Greengrassâ would have changed their name after the wizarding world hid away. They would not be seen as possibly forgiving the Blackwoodâs.
The Greengrassâ connection to farming would come in the form of owning a large portion of farmland, and supplying the wizarding world with produce and livestock, while technically being registered with muggles.
For this reason many people adored the Greengrassâ in equal measure to the Blackwoodâs. Their popularity eventually allowed the family to be revered as one of the most prestigious pureblood families.
The Greengrassâ rarely voiced their opinions on supremacy, largely being viewed as neutral, something they needed to do so that they could remain in public favour as opinions shifted, unlike the very vocally supremacist Blackwoodâs.
And now I probably should talk about that blood malediction, even if it technically doesnât originate from the Greengrass line. Many fans refer to it as the Greengrass family blood curse, despite it being established that only the women would be able to pass it down to their children, so therefore it had to originate somewhere else.
Essentially, there was a supremely powerful witch in Greece, named Hekateia Hermokratos, who was rumoured to be a Huntress of Artemis in addition to having a possibly divine blood connection to Hekate.
Hekateia was viewed as an abomination in her village, as she was quite beautiful and many men did not like her choice to remain chaste. Hekateia was impregnated and cursed to have only the weakest and most frail of children for her choice to not date or have sex.
Hekateia had twins, a girl and a boy. Eudokia and Aiskhlypos Hermokratos. They both inherited this curse, being considerably weaker, with their blood simply not clotting correctly, or not being able to keep consistent iron or oxygen levels, and a concerningly low white blood cell count. This is why the curse was considered an aimotykhysia, or blood curse.
What they found however, when Eudokia and Aiskhlypos had children of their own, only Eudokia was able to pass down the curse. Aiskhlyposâ children were not affected, and grew up to be oracles and soldiers.
Eudokiaâs descendant, Niktomede Ntouminarsis, travelled the world to find cures in foreign lands as her condition got gradually worse. She found her way to Britain and bastardised her name to be Nimue Toumin.
While in Britain, she encountered a Celtic man named Merlin Wyllt, and saw his great magical abilities. She hoped he would be able to cure her blood malediction, but she died giving birth to their daughter, Cleopatra Wyllt, before he was able to find a cure for her.
Merlin continued to hunt for a cure for his daughter, and eventually returned to Greece to study their magic and gods. He was unable to find a cure.
Generation after generation tried to find the most powerful suitors to cure them, or at least bring their grandkids great magical ability that could help them out of their impoverish situation.
Eventually, Demetria Argyros moved to Britain, in the hopes that revered potioneer Archetius Accrington would be able to cure her. They fell in love and had three children, Horatia, Necessitas and Hyperion Accrington.
Demetriaâs life was able to be extended by Archetius, but she died while Hyperion was just a boy. Archetius became a recluse offer his wife died, and he tried to marry his children into families that would offer him great wealth to continue his research.
Horatia was to marry Lucius Malfoy II, Necessitas was to marry Felix Rosier II and Hyperion was to marry the widowed Evelyn Zabini.
Necessitas and Hyperion married as they were betrothed, but Horatia left Lucius II, having fallen in love with Romulus Greengrass.
Necessitas Rosier had a daughter, Rosetta Rosier, whom miraculously it seemed was not afflicted by her families curse. Hyperion died under mysterious circumstances before having any children with Evelyn.
The health of Rosetta had caused a great rift between Horatia and Necessitas, as Horatiaâs own two daughters, Daphne and Astoria, had not been so lucky to avoid the blood malediction. Horatia died angry at her sister.
Romulus never ended up searching for a cure, rarely being seen in public with his two children.
Daphne Greengrass was betrothed to Vincent Crabbe while Astoria Greengrass was betrothed to Phillip Parkinson II. There werenât many hopes for Daphne and Vincent, however Astoria and Phillip II appeared to be absolutely besotted with one another.
Eventually, Astoria and Phillip II were caught kissing, which called for the Parkinsonâs to call off the engagement and match their son with Astoriaâs cousin, Rosetta Rosier, instead. Astoria was labelled a whore for her behaviour, and no one wished to marry her. Daphneâs engagement to Vincent was also called off, due to the Greengrassâ beginning to lose prestige.
Daphne never ended up marrying, but Astoria did eventually fall in love with Draco Malfoy, something Iâm sure their ancestors appreciated with the whole Greengrass vs Blackwood and leaving Lucius Malfoy drama.
Astoria and Draco adopted and orphaned cousin of Dracoâs, Delphi Riddle. They also had a son, Scorpius Malfoy, who miraculously also did not inherit his mothers blood curse. Astoria died twelve years later.
And this marks the end of the Greengrass name, and that pesky little blood curse.
â
And I think thatâs all of the families I can fit for now. Will probably do a bunch of others. If you want to request a family thatâs fine too btw. Happy to do ones that are from America, or France, or wherever else as well. This was actually a really fun little project. I say little like this hasnât been sitting in my drafts for three months.
