Travelling Luffy modern AU:

A modern AU where when Luffy met Shanks as a kid he and his mates were living in a van travelling the country probably as some form of criminal but no one in the sleepy village of Foosha knew him. And it inspired Luffy to travel when he grew up. So after high school Luffy picks up random jobs saving money for himself and others to travel going on these grand trips over seas and when he gets back squats at a new friends place and finds a new shitty job to save money and does it all again. He tries to get all his friends to travel with him though it doesn’t always work out so it’s usually two or three of them.

And even in completely different countries Luffy just has a way of befriending the locals finding the best restaurants and activities and even making genuine friends who he is still pen pals with years later. So many times the craziest things have happened to him but Luffy never takes photos on his journey so Nami and the other Strawhats had made it their mission to document every bullshit lucky occasion because no one will believe him otherwise.

His car broke down? Yeah turns out the mayor of the city found them and helped them out. Now they regularly share animal pics. The random old man he befriended in a big city? Yeah turns out he’s actually one of shank’s dads and a criminal and while though retired is still conning a casino for their money and running from the government. The tall rando he fought at a restaurant before both of them decided to just eat and chill? Turns out his mother is one of the biggest gang leaders in the country and he is her right hand man.

Ace also travels but never as frequently as Luffy does now. He’s seen the big places and heard plenty of stories from his friends (the white beards) but is pretty happy in the city. So it’s always a pleasant surprise when the random stranger Luffy befriended happens to know is big brother.

It’s even funnier if you imagine that’s how Luffy meets the grandline strawhats. Like Robin was an exchange student staying overseas, he befriended and greeted her when she returned home. Chopper was graduating high school in a sleepy snow town and because of Luffy decided to head to the university local to him to become a doctor. Franky was actually a professional mechanic and after talking and a lot of pushing decided to make a better name for himself in Luffy’s town for a fresh start. Brook was an old professional singer who was stuck over seas they randomly found and decided to help out, renewing his passport finding his birth certificate ect. He now performs at bars and is working on a solo career. Jimbe was travelling for his own kind of work though after a few encounters with Ace and then Luffy, he found himself so charmed and in need to settle a little, chose to become a teacher at the local university.

The one time Luffy flew by himself because none of his friends could make time he ended up having to stay over seas for two years due to issues with his visa. By some fucking miracle Rayleigh was there and ended up looking after the kid helping him with his piss poor education, inability to hold a stable job and his own house. Luffy came home to the biggest party ever and while most of his friends graduated he started taking online courses while travelling got a share apartment with Zoro and started really cleaning up his resume and not quitting his fucking job every time he traveled.

Luffy just has the travel bug and a need for adventure and has taken all of the east blue gang with him multiple times on these adventures. Something always goes wrong but works out in the best ways.

Preview:

The commanders of the Whitebeard pirates laid up late on the Moby Dick, the summer air still warm on their skin even with the sun long past set. The crowd was small as it was no real celebration, they had been doing well these past days, and with a recent restock of ales, sake and other liquors they couldn’t help but treat themselves long after most of the crew had gone to bed. Just the sixteen of them up late and drinking amongst themselves, a rare yet welcomed pleasure.

They sat under the stars with candle light as a guide for clumsy hands, unsteady with alcohol through their systems as they smiled and chatted on the floor. It was a nice night, peaceful even. The ship had hauled anchor for the night and the boat continued to be washed by gentle waves. The island under their claim close to their left side helped to provide protection from the Grand Line storms and ease the night's worry.

They laughed among themselves. Empty plates at their side along with a few tossed empty bottles. The drinks did wonders to help them all relax to varying degrees. Ace was probably on his eighth now, judging by the bottles around his lap but his speech was still clear, though they could tell they were losing him a little. Thatch on his sixth was slurring a little and swaying, choosing to nurse the half empty cup in his hands. And Marco was only on his third, being much more mindful of his intake, rather preferring to avoid a hangover when the sun eventually chose to rise again.

Y’all ever really think about how Luffy’s dream of being a pirate really developed over time? Like everyone sort of thinks he always wanted to find the one piece but I really don’t think that’s the case. I do think Luffy always wanted to be a pirate, but what that meant changed as he grew up.

Before Shanks, Luffy probably just liked the idea of being a pirate since the only other option offered in his life was the one forced upon him. To be a marine. From a very young age Luffy probably figured out he didn’t want to be a marine. Whether simply because he was a D and wanted to choose for himself or because he just hated rules that much. The logic, If I’m not a marine then I’m a pirate. Was probably what started this idea. At first being a pirate meant choice. To mot follow the boring life planned for him.

Then when he met Shanks, a real pirate, hearing tales from the sea, seeing how they acted, hearing how they lived. Becoming a pirate meant he could go on adventures. His child like understanding of the dangers plus not having to follow marine rules? That’s a dream come true for a chaotic 7yo.

But when Shanks left, this dream changed again… or well grew a new layer. While yes being a pirate meant adventure, he would also become a pirate to find the one piece to prove himself to Shanks. To show he can be a great pirate and to give the hat back. But only once he was strong enough.

Then he met his brothers. He learned the importance of freedom. What it meant to have it and what it meant to have it taken away. And obtaining the one piece no longer was just to prove himself. Because if he became king of the pirates. He would be the freest ever. It meant he didn’t have to follow marine rules. It meant he could go on adventures. It meant he could be the strongest person ever. Because he had the freedom to choose it.

And soon meeting his crew, I think being pirate king meant helping them achieve their dreams too.

Give me a modern AU where Perona is a collage drop out because her best friend/roommate Gekomoria ended up being a criminal handing in illegal trades. Like he was her rich friend buying her everything but they genuinely got on great. But after the apartment being ransacked through the investigation. The interview and court dealings taking so long she failed all her classes. And because since he was arrested she lost her house. She dropped out.

She ends up having to reach out to extended family until one distance uncle agreed and is now staying with Mihawk until she can mentally and financially recover from the biggest fuck over of her life. She’s part time employed at an alt fashion store and rather then pays rent does most of the chores.

Zoro moves in a year later to not have to pay for his own house while in collage and mihawk suddenly finds his happy single (probably rich) life filled with annoying 20 yo’s baking cookies at three am and drinking all the damn milk.

A small funny detail I noticed in the ASL brothers flashback was that Luffy was the only one with a sash type thing for his pipe. Which tells me he must forget and misplace it a LOT. Like. He left it, dropped it, forgot it, so many times one of his brothers had to make that for him. Do you think they have had to do that for other things of Luffy’s? Like shoes and things.

Do you think even years after Luffy’s been gone the bandits are still finding misplaces shirts and pipes in the forest.

Robin has always had a little bit of a dark sense of humour throughout the anime but it really comes out post timskip, which really implies to me that this is Sabo’s fault. He made one joke about popping a human skull like an egg, and Robin’s first response was that the brain was far too tough to simulate an egg yolk, you with need to pulverise the brain first to get it close to that consistency. And I feel like from that point on they kept making really twisted jokes at each other with sweet little smiles and that’s how they bonded. After all they seemed close in dressrosa :)

Look I’m all for aroace rep in my silly little shows. But I genuinely can’t help but wonder if Luffy would be even AWARE he’s ace/ aroace. Like. He knows what sex is. And crushes. And romance and stuff. I mean he dogs on Sanji for it and ace if you read that one scene with Makino that way. But like he never strives for it himself. And sure a moment with Ace or with the bandits where they teased him about liking a girl or getting a girlfriend and he just. Couldn’t fathom the idea and that made him so confused that someone said “oh that probably means your ace/aroace” and Luffy has just accepted it, would be kinda funny and sweet

But it’s infinitely funnier if he doesn’t know. Like. He knows what it is and all that, but it’s never once occurred to him that it’s meant to apply to him too. Like, never once does think he’s meant to like someone. He’s meant to be king of the not smooch people!! That’s Sanji’s thing!! And like whether the crew is dating each other or not doesn’t matter, they have definitely talked preferences. And it’s been a on going mystery/joke to figure out Luffy’s type. They definitely thought he was gay for a little while but that idea eventually gets shot down.

Everyone eventually figuring out Luffy is ace/ aroace except ironically, Luffy.

Look I’m not gonna say Garp is a good man. But I can’t help thinking about how he must of felt after Sabo’s death. He knows the celestial Dragons SUCK and he knows they’re the worst and that this isn’t justice, not the kind he wants to see. To know a child was killed by a celestial dragon. A boy Luffy and Ace called their brother. A boy he considered his grandson, killed. It didn’t matter that he was a Goa noble or that he had flown a pirate flag. He will always morn family. And the life Sabo never got to live. Even had that been a life of piracy it was better then being killed.

There’s a pretty common ASL brothers headcanon that Sabo teaches his brothers things like reading and writing among other things and I do think this is true to a degree. Like of course the bandits taught Ace the basics but you know little Ace and his whole “raaaa don’t tell me what to do. If I stay out of the house I can’t be a bother to you” mindset. And I certainly think Makino and the Mayor TRIED to teach Luffy but he only has a grip on bare basics. So Sabo had to teach more complicated things like grammar, multiplication, division and other things.

And honestly I could see him being a pretty good teacher. He knows how his brothers brains work and how to phrase questions for them so that they would understand. And considering Ace and Sabo had known each other for years by this point I could imagine Ace is use to Sabo being a teacher.

But Sabo as Luffy’s teacher is a little different. Because Sabo watches Luffy struggle with so many things he did when he was little. Phonetic spelling, contractions, fractions even simple things like buttoning up his own shirt are hard for Luffy. And while Ace is quick to call him stupid because it’s easy don’t be a baby. Sabo is patient with him because his own parents never were. He buttons Luffy’s shirts in the winter when he struggles, he sounds out store signs for him and break down maths questions to the point of rocks for Luffy to count. While I doubt Luffy was ever fond of class time, he was almost always met with patience helping him to learn

When Sabo left, Ace would not coddle him the same Sabo did even if he tried to and that Winter after Sabo’s death Luffy learned to button his own shirt and was so proud. He chose to leave Dawn in a button up vest as if to prove to Sabo he was grown enough to survive on his own and he didn’t need to worry.

A gender swapped ASL would be basically the same except Sabo having even more mannerisms drilled into her that have been progressively broken down by Ace (Anne technically?) over their friendship. But Ace and Luffy are exactly the same. Expect Luffy is doing cartwheels in a dress cause she can. No no but like this shits genuinely so fun to think about especially when you also play with the texture of the fruit.

A lot of the food based devil fruits are not at all hard to figure out. Same as Magellan’s.

All zoan types either being like rotten animal flesh or the rotten food of whatever that animal eats. By this logic I don’t even want to know what the human-human tastes like.

Corazon’s had the taste and texture of fucking Cotten. Crocodiles was like trying to eat raw cinnamon or a cactus judging by its shape. I can’t explain it but the chop-chop fruit totally left small parts of the fruit stuck in your throat though it would probably have a rotten fruit taste with this really distinct coppery after effect. The smooth-smooth fruit probably tasted like extremely expired palm oils like it tastes like it belongs on your skin but also in the trash. Dofi’s fruit just having this impossible to chew texture that you gotta grind your teeth through and tasted like clothing that’s been rotting in a chest for ten years. The ripple-ripple fruit was probably like a jelly like texture but chewy like it’s moving in your mouth and I can’t explain it but I feel like it would have a watery leather taste? Like a leather jello.

Gonna be honest all of the weird paramecia type ones are where you can get a real debate on what they would taste like

So Luffys fruit tastes like straight up chewing erasers, Aces/Sabos tastes like so badly burned food you don't even know what it was previously, food based frietts just taste like it's rotten.

This wouldn't apply to every fruit since not all have a nessesarely bad taste equivalent but it's a fun idea

Guhhhh…. ASL brothers… AU thoughts… attacking my mind…violently.

Au where the D means demon and Sabo just grows up with two magical demons as brothers and a grandfather and as a result is capable of inhuman feats and just lives in the uncanny valley in everyone else’s mind. Maybe he can cast spells. Maybe he’s damned. Maybe he was an angel and has become fallen.

He met Ace and just thought he was a weird and angry kid having never heard of demons. Meanwhile Sabo is the one person nice to Ace as well as a ‘dumb human he can trick’ and they end up becoming a trouble duo cause Sabo wants to cause chaos but within reason. Then Luffy shows up who does NOT act like a demon cause of Shanks and Makino and they just become very strong freaky kids trying to figure out morality.

Au where the ASL brothers somehow get stranded on an abandoned forest island and it’s a lord of the flies situation but not really where they just become half feral and rely on each others. I love the idea that Sabo and Ace commonly call Luffy a brat. But not in a mean way just annoyed. Because it’s always Luffy’s way or the highway. He has to get what he wants or he’ll whine whine whine. Well at least that’s how it feels when they are the ones making sure every animal in the forest doesn’t kill him. And Luffy does not care at all about the name he probably doesn’t even know what it means, that or he’s just been called it so much it means nothing to him.

but when Sabo returned home and met Stelly, a real brat. He got a taste of just how much of an amazing and compassionate kid Luffy really is. A brat doesn’t run to you excited to show you the bug he found. Or gives you part of their blanket so you’re extra warm. A brat doesn’t want to hear stories by candle light and wants to hug you every second of the day. Luffy is an amazingly kind person. And Stelly will never be that and the fact his family wanted him to felt wrong. No one will be his little brother besides the brat who would demand to fight him every damn day.
