Will definitely be checking out the 2020 drama series! I thought I was over shipping for a little bit but the new anime’s got me feral over them
onmyoji related media you can watch (that has english subs)
Behold, my Onmyoji film/TV collection for curious people who've already seen the anime!
The Yin-Yang Master (2001) and it's 2003 sequel The real OGs, the one most people know from Yuzuru Hanyu's SEIMEI free skate routine. Featuring Nomura Mansai as Seimei and Hideaki Itou as Hiromasa, these movies were my introduction to the Onmyoji series as a whole. The soundtrack is a banger, the practical effects are great and you get to see Hiroyuki Sanada ham it up in the first movie! I would say that the first movie is a lot stronger, but the second movie makes up for it by being A Lot Gayer. It even has an English dub! It's easily found on Certain streaming websites or on DVD.
Tumblr media
晴雅集 - Qing Ya Ji, aka The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity A Chinese adaptation that REALLY puts its own spin on things; Qingming and Boya are Seimei and Hiromasa respectively, but it's not easy to tell if you aren't already aware of the source material! It's a different take that I love regardless, with beautiful visuals, incredible costuming and impressive sets. It also made me cry like a baby at one point, which is always a plus. It's on Netflix and it also has an English dub.
Tumblr media
Onmyoji - Takiyashahime (2020) A TV Asahi drama special that adapts the two-part Takiyashahime novels. It's not 1-1 of course, but it does follow the main plot points well enough (it also adapts Tsuyuko's story as a bonus!) It's got that "yeah this was done on a TV drama budget and not a movie one" look when it comes to the effects, but that doesn't stop it from being enjoyable. You really get a glimpse at novel Seimei and Hiromasa's dynamic in this (they include one of my favourite hirosei exchanges in this and it's SO GOOD) as well as proper Nasty Old Man Ashiya Doman!!! You can watch it on Certain streaming sites.
Tumblr media
There also exists a 2015 TV Asahi drama series, but I haven't been able to find it. An earlier 2001 NHK drama series exists as well, but it isn't subbed in English. It is, at the very least, entirely on YouTube! 10 episodes, 45 minutes each. It's a little...weird, I won't lie (they try to make Hiromasa and Mitsumushi a thing which is. Why) but some of the stories are genuinely heartwrenching, which was a surprise to me when I watched it!

大难不死 必有后祸(福) (After close scrape with death, trouble ensues...)
Ok so the script I’ve written behind him is a play on a very well-known Chinese proverb: “After a close scrape with disaster, happiness will surely come.” (but a more literal translation would be: If one doesn’t die in an disastrous affair, happiness is sure to follow). The last character which I’ve placed in brackets is the character for “happiness/luck/fortune” which I noticed looks very similar to the character “trouble, disaster, mistake” (what I’ve written in the drawing/last character out of bracket).
This little pun just really resonated with Asougi’s character arc throughout the story for me so yeah, here’s the phantom of the masked apprentive holding Asougi’s head. Hopefully I’ll get the whole drawing done soon!

负重前行,在所不惜 (I carry on forwards, no matter the cost)
I wanted to post this yesterday but saw @asoryuu-week and thought that this would be perfect for Day 1, Pining! I wanted to show the unbearable weight of expectations and the piercing grief Naruhodou must’ve felt after case 1-2.

This is honestly so interesting, I’ve heard about temples dedicated to the Monkey King/the pilgrim group but have never really seen them. I think their existence really speaks a lot about Chinese Folk religion and the power balance between the deities and humans within that religious system.
It would seem that setting up temples for deities is a show of the gods’ power over the worshippers in the folk religion but thinking about it further, this might not paint the full picture. If we think about the Monkey King we can trace his entire mythology/backstory within the 16th century novel 西游记 (Journey to the West). Of course, if I remember correctly, the Chu region (a nation state during Warring period which has long since become a region of China) already worshipped different simian deities. There’s also Hanuman from India which could have influenced Sun Wukong so the character’s been around longer than the novel. But what I’m trying to say is that the novel created a continuos/single background for Sun Wukong and made him widely known. So the Monkey King being worshipped here is the novel version of Sun Wukong which is what makes things really interesting.
Can you imagine Marco Polo being defied? How about Merlin, the Celtic inspired mage by the legendary King Arthur’s side? Of course, Western Folk Culture, Christianity and The Enlightenment is a nuanced and complicated topic I’m not going to delve deep in but do you see what I mean? Sun Wukong is a folk-religion inspired character that’s been defied only a few hundred years ago. This means that the people recognizes that he’s from a novel and still chose to enshrine him. Of course, religious persons would probably disagree vehemently with me because this choice might seem to delegitimize the deities of Chinese Folk Religion but I find the absolutely fascinating and a distinct quality of Chinese Folk Religion. For example, we deified Yu the Engineer, the (arguably) founder of Chinese Dynasties. Of course, he is most likely the chief of a tribe who led his people to separately invent irrigation (Mesopotamia and Egypt have invented irrigation long before China but if memory serves me correctly China developed irrigation independently therefore I use the word “invent” here). But we still choose to deify and worship him for his great deeds and the ingenuity and hardworking spirit he’s inspired in Chinese culture. The religion is strongly meritocratic/democratic in a sense if you think about it and I think it’s empowering to the people. What I sense is that people who particpate in Folk worship inherently/subconsciously believes that their power of belief and devotion is enough to make anyone (who deserves it) a god and that’s just mind blowing. Tradition/act of worship holds power within itself which isn’t “made holy” by anyone besides the worshippers. I think understanding this is a key part in understanding Chinese culture/mindset. We worship and respect authority but also recognize that they are the authority because of our worship and that we can be deified ourselves as well through hard work apparently (I’m smiling as I type this, it’s just really funny but awe-inspiring at the same time). Like there’s “social mobility” even in terms of religion.
So does Sun Wukong, Qitian Dasheng, a 16th century novel character deserve enshrinement/deification? Well, just look at these temples in Taiwan, the answer is apparent. Even if he is “fictional” this doesn’t make him any less real (I know for a fact that he lives rent-free in 1/7 of the world population or even more lol). I know he’s taught generations that authority is able to be challenged and should be challenged if you think they’re full of shit (of course, you’d have to be really capable/strong to that so work hard kids!). He’s also reconnected many 2nd gen. Asian immigrants back to their culture and just a cornerstone in Chinese culture/pantheon. With all these achievements under his belt it’s no wonder people would choose to worship/deify him!

I’ve written an article about all of the Qitian Dasheng Monkey King temples that I’ve visited so far in Taiwan. I will update it as I visit new locations.

Hi! My tumblr will mainly consist of random thoughts from my brain, which will be a mix of just anything and everything I've learned.
For example: if you have instant coffee and haven't been able to use it because it's too bitter, take one teaspoon of instant coffee and mix it into a cup of hot cocoa to make a simple mocha. You can add some milk or half and half (or an alternative) to both tone down the bitterness of the instant coffee and cool it down a bit to drink. You can also add 3/4 of a teaspoon of sugar to also sweeten it, but I usually find that the hot cocoa is sweet enough as is.
Anyways, I hope to vibe in my tumblr corner and that y'all have a good time.
Thanks,
Avery

Beta-Reader/Writing Buddy Wanted!
So I don’t think my reblog of my fic link showed up in any tags so I’m going to make a new post for this. I’m currently writing a JTTW fic which is in essence a sequel to the canon set in modern times.
Since I’m impulsiveTM and can’t properly proofread/edit before I just post a chapter which could be riddled with holes I’d really love a beta-reader! If anyone’s writing a fic as well we could totally be writing buddies or something because I feel like that’ll really help me keep on track and keep writing. If anyone’s interested please dm me, I’d be super happy to talk things over!
