May the Gods strike me down if I am to forsake you
Then my eyes shall stain red from blood and anger
Cold rock surrounds to perpetuate hollow screams
But not for me, not today

New JTTW Idols
Here are new additions to my collection of Journey to the West-related religious items:
1. Great Sage Equaling Heaven (Qitian dasheng, 齊天大聖), a.k.a. the Monkey King. He has the face of a Buddha. This is fitting as his hat is labeled "Buddha" (Fo, 佛). He's roughly 20 cm (7.87 in) tall. The idol is supposedly from China.
Tumblr media
2. Nezha (哪吒), a.k.a. the "Third Prince" (San taizi, 三太子). He's adorable. Not counting the spear, he is roughly 21 cm (8.26 in).
Tumblr media
3. Earth god (Tudi gong/shen, 土地公/神) - This one is quite old, something you might see on a roadside shrine. I prefer this "earthy" look as opposed to something shiny and new. Not counting the walking stick, he is roughly 22 cm (8.66 in).

Do characters like Cthulhu or Wu Kong really “belong” in SMT? Where should the line be drawn between unequivocally fictional and legitimate myth?
Sun Wukong is actually worshipped (as Qitian Dasheng), so yes; he transcends mere literature.
This has come up before in the relatively near-past and that's okay, but the Lovecraftian demons appeared in SMT at a time when it was still being influenced by tabletop RPGs and Cthulhu and the like were very much a part of that culture back then. However, they also appear in the same game as these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So when you think about it, Nyarlathotep isn't as much of an outlier next to fellow modern pop culture pulls like Betelgeuse, Audrey II, and Christine.
Any line should be drawn according to what the game needs. It all worked out in SMT2's favor but no other game in the series even attempted to replicate it (the Devil Summoner series' pop-accentuated designs are a different breed entirely from literally just Betelgeuse and Nightbreed Baphomet), I think partially because the Japanese industry in the mid-90s was beginning to move past potentially copyright-infringing artwork and inclusions. Like, compare Super Contra's idea of an alien compared to Hard Corps' (also 1994):

But basically, I think as long as SMT doesn't become Fortnite with its choices (would never happen anyway), it's okay. It's more or less remained consistent.

Day 6: Ring
Maybe some dungeons aren’t worth looting…
As far as Joceline knows, Tataru has about eleven lovers in Hingashi. Odds are of them would enjoy her new face, but that’s not guaranteed, and SHE no longer enjoys her own face, which is what really matters. At least the change is temporary; at the latest, Tataru should look like herself again after a good night’s sleep. The Warrior could also use some rest after exploring King Ganen’s mausoleum and then getting knocked around by Soroban.
“What have you got there?”
Joceline, who’s never forgotten that each of the cute animals in this temple knows multiple ways to kill her, jumps. Qitian Dasheng is hovering right next to her, eyeing the ring in her hand. It’s a swirling silver band with a pale green stone… and it came out of a chest in the mausoleum he was guarding.
Sometimes she really doesn’t need to listen to Esteem when the darkside encourages her to treat herself.
“Oh, j-just a ring,” she replies. It’s the truth, isn’t it? He shouldn’t be cross. Right?
“It’s a lovely ring,” chirps the auspice. “Where did you acquire it?”
“Just… exploring a dungeon. A regular old dungeon. Like adventurers do.” Please, Twelve, kami, anybody out there who might care, please don’t let him ask which dungeon. Her face still hurts from those blows his staff landed on it. She forces out a nervous giggle anyroad. Qitian Dasheng laughs with her.
“Which dungeon?” And it seems everybody’s gods are taking a nap. The Warrior feels sweat trickling down her neck.
“Well… it was in Yanxia…” Those precious, deadly brown eyes bore into hers as if slowly but inevitably willing the truth out of her. “It was a very old place…”
“Jojo! Are you coming?” calls good old Tataru. “I thought we were going back to Kugane!”
“Yeah! We are! Let’s go!” Joceline bows hastily to the auspice. “It was nice talking to you. Good night!”
The adorable smile never leaves his face. “Until next time…”

Remembered this design of Sun Wukong (a.k.a. Wu Kong, Qitian Dasheng, Seiten Taisei) from Devil Summoner today. You know, the art you see in Strange Journey and Shin Megami Tensei IV, where he's got a staff over his shoulder and wearing armour. Quite a martial figure:
Tumblr media
I still remember the pleasure of having a Chaos-aligned party consisting of him, Zhuyin, and Asherah on what I think was my first playthrough of Strange Journey.
A few times when writing about Revolutionary Demonology, particularly the essay "Lifting The Absolute" I thought about this particular image of Sun Wukong with his staff when considering the image of the ancient Greek Cynic bearing the staff in resistance to societal norms. There was a time in ancient Athens when people were expected to open carry either swords or staves, but then society decided that this was no longer appropriate. The Cynics still held their staffs, in contempt of the new norms, preferring their martial symbols.
As somebody who spent college using bamboo sticks as substitute swords for a kind of mock practice, that's the kind of idea that resonates with me, strongly. I think I noted that in the article. Ancient resistance to societal norms as expressed in the symbol of weaponry, I think that's my vibe. As Shahin said, living free is living fighting.

Bit abstract of a drawing but sometimes i imagine what it must have been like getting locked inside Laozi’s Brazier of Eight Trigrams in Sun Wukong’s story— The Great Sage being able to cram himself into the compartment corresponding with the element of wind to avoid getting burned by the brazier’s fire and instead breathing in the powerful smoke for 49 days. Really makes the idea of his fury so much stronger after all those days holding out.
At that point your rage might as well become it’s own flame

The Evolution of Sun Wukong's Title
1. Great Sage Steel Muscles and Iron Bones (Gangjin tiegu dasheng, 鋼筋鐵骨大聖) - 13th-century "Kozanji version" "Emperor T'ai Tsung later enfeoffed Monkey Pilgrim as 'Great Sage Steel Muscles and Iron Bones'" (Wivell, 1994, p. 1207). [1] 2. Great Sage Reaching Heaven (Tongtian dasheng, 通天大聖) - 15th-century Xiyouji zaju play
"We are five brothers and sisters: my elder sister is Lishan Laomu [離山老母, Venerable Mother of Mount Li], my second sister Wuzhiqi Shengmu [支祇聖母, Holy Mother Wuzhiqi]; my older brother is Qitian Dasheng [齊天大聖, Great Sage Equaling Heaven], I myself am Tongtian Dasheng [通天大聖, Great Sage Reaching Heaven], and my younger brother Shuashua Sanlang [耍耍三郎, Shuashua the Third Son]" (Dudbridge, 1970, p. 110). 3. Great Sage Equaling Heaven (Qitian dasheng, 齊天大聖) - 1592 edition of the novel
"…What is there to stop you from assuming the rank of the Great Sage, Equal to Heaven?" When the Monkey King heard these words, he could not conceal his delight, shouting repeatedly, "Bravo! Bravo!" "Make me a banner immediately." he ordered the four mighty commanders, "and inscribe on it in large letters, 'The Great Sage, Equal to Heaven.' Erect a pole to hang it on. From now on, address me only as the Great Sage, Equal to Heaven, and the title Great King will no longer be permitted. The Monster Kings of the various caves will also be informed so that it will be known to all" (Wu & Yu, 2012, p. 151).
Note:
1. The translation actually says "Bronze"; however, the original Chinese says "Steel" (see here).

HC: Ancients & Primates
Tumblr media
So we all know the boss of Swallow's Compass Qitian Dasheng, aka this guy here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, what if I told you there are three, other monkey auspices like him and naturally, they are based on the four celestial primates in or mentioned in journey to the west? Here is the story of their creation.
You see Qitian Dasheng was actually the first concept Ananke (my Azem) created as a kid. Originally, the concept was supposed to know transformations, recognize the seasons, discern the advantages of the earth and be capable of altering the course of planets and stars. She was so proud of her work at the time that she managed to convince her childhood friends Hades and Hythlodaeus to make some monkey-like creatures of their own. Even Venat joined the fun, because despite former Convocation member knowing they wouldn't get far she found the children's antics entertaining.
To work with little Ananke's chaotic character, the three made up the following concepts:
Venat created the red-butt horse monkey (yes she gave it that name to make the kids laugh) who had immense knowledge of light and dark's balance, understood man's affairs, was adept at daily life, able to avoid death and lengthen its life.
Little Hythlodaeus created the concept of a long-armed gibbon, who could seize the sun and moon, shorten a thousand mountains, distinguish the auspicious from inauspicious plus manipulate planets and stars.
Finally, small Hades made the concept of a six-eared macaque, who could hear about a thousand miles, had a discernment of fundamental principles, knowledge of past and future and a comprehension of all things.
Obviously, these concepts were rejected on the spot for being considered "too dangerous". However, after the sundering and by various, magical accidents the concepts were eventually given life and now roam Hydaelyn freely.
