Getting close enough to wildlife for a clear shot through my lens takes an enormous amount of patience and the ability to lie in wait for hours, sometimes days at a time. I learned from an early age how to tread softly in the tracks of animals and never disrupt their day-to-day behavior. Sometimes, however, I get caught off-guard by an animal who has absolutely no regard for all my meticulous planning and tracking. As I was on my way to photograph wandering albatross in South Georgia for @Natgeo, this baby fur seal suddenly came charging out from the tall grass with an attitude and confidence that far exceeded his size. I tried my hardest to stifle my laughter as I snapped a couple of shots and politely backed away. In recent decades, former presidents and first ladies have had their official White House portraits unveiled by their successors. "Queen of Katma" / Through the long barrel of my lens, I could see the toll of a tough season written in the muddy pools of this mother grizzly's eyes. She was clearly wary of her surroundings as she led her cubs to the river's edge to gorge on fish. During the seasonal salmon runs, giant males tend to guard the choicest fishing spots along the river and would not think twice about going after her young. She must be alert, attentive, and focused at every minute to provide for her family while keeping them safe. The responsibility she shouldered was enormous, and yet I saw nothing but warmth, calm, and deep wisdom when she lifted her head and looked right at me. Survival in the Alaskan wilderness is about treading with caution. Research has shown that the neurological underpinnings of perceiving art differ from those used in standard object recognition. Instead, brain regions involved in the experience of emotion and goal setting show activation when viewing art. "I Have a Dream" is a public speech that was delivered by American civil rights activist and Baptist minister, Martin Luther King Jr., during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. In the speech, King called for civil and economic rights and an end to racism in the United States. Delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the speech was a defining moment of the civil rights movement and among the most iconic speeches in American history. Beginning with a reference to the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared millions of slaves free in 1863, King said "one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free". Toward the end of the speech, King departed from his prepared text for a partly improvised peroration on the theme "I have a dream" prompted by Mahalia Jackson's cry: "Tell them about the dream, Martin!" In this part of the speech, which most excited the listeners and has now become its most famous, King described his dreams of freedom and equality arising from a land of slavery and hatred.
