The Amber Fury - Natalie Haynes
I don’t understand why this book has two titles, the original was published as The Amber Fury, a title that not only catches your attention, but upon finishing the novel it makes total sense with the story. The other title, The Furies, reminds me of another Dark Academia book with the same title which is Katie Lowe’s The Furies, a book that makes so much more sense to have this title because it…

The Night Climbers - Ivo Stourton
The Night Climbers is one of those books that can best be described by how much it was influenced by The Secret History. And I mean this in the best way possible. The writing in this story is so clearly an homage to TSH that it is impossible to not be excited about it, if you’re like me and are always on the lookout for a new book that gives you the same feeling as TSH did. I am the type of…

Wolfsong - T.J. Klune
Wolfsong is not my first T.J. Klune book, but it is certainly one of his best works. I was skeptical at first for numerous reasons, first I am always a bit reluctant with certain wolf books, I do enjoy this theme if done right, but I am always afraid it might be too cringy or fall too close into those ABO fanfics. Thankfully, that is not the case here. I feel like one of the reasons Wolfsong is…

An Education in Malice - S.T. Gibson
Having read S.T. Gibson’s A Dowry of Blood a couple of years ago, I was very excited to read a new book by her, especially a Dark Academia which is one of my favorite genres. However, An Education in Malice simply didn’t deliver. Firstly, I was unaware that this would in fact be a Carmilla retelling. I think that maybe if I had known that beforehand, my experience might have been different and…

The Lake of Dead Languages - Carol Goodman
The Lake of Dead Languages is a masterpiece. This is a book that demanded quite a bit from me. I first started reading it earlier this year, but I had to pause my reading because I wasn’t concentrating like I knew I had to for this story. This book, which could easily be called two books in one, introduces us to Jane Hudson, returning to Heart Lake School for Girls twenty years after she…

This Time Tomorrow - Emma Straub
I was thrown into This Time Tomorrow without knowing anything about it. I heard about this book last year when it was released, saw the cover and that it was nominated for best fiction at the GR awards, but I just didn’t know anything about it. Last week, I saw a post recommending books in the vein of “liked this? try this!” and Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin (a book I was so…

Hi! I like your essays about Dark Academia. I was wondering if you had any reading recommendations for Campus Stories and the history of this genre aside from Hawthorne's Fanshawe?
Hi, thank you so much!
For fictional recommendations: The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Babel by R.F. Kuang and Ghosts of Harvard by Francesca Serritella to name a few.
Some non-fiction resources about the Campus Novel are: The University in Modern Fiction by Janice Rossen, The Life of the Mind: American Academia Reflected Through Contemporary Fiction by Lisa Johson and Academic Satire: The Campus Novel in Context by Kenneth Womack, to cite a few.
Hope this helps!

Este post é uma tradução de um artigo escrito pela autora e acadêmica, M.L. Rio, o propósito desta tradução é fazer com que este conteúdo e informação chegue a mais pessoas, sem a barreira do idioma. The Fragile Threads of Power - V.E.Schwab
With The Fragile Threads of Power we return to the world of the Shades of Magic, and what a return it is. This is the kind of book that was made for the readers, the fans, and the ones who missed this universe like hell. It is so clearly a love note to the people who loved the series, and the four Londons and all its promises. I was so elated when Titan Books approved me for an ARC of this…

The Gospel of Eve - Rachel Mann
The Gospel of Eve is a find. It is a book so occult in the inner workings of GoodReads that only because I am an avid searcher of books did I manage to find it, and most specifically since I am always looking for books that fit the Dark Academia genre. Upon stumbling on it, I immediately spotted some reviews that nodded to The Secret History. Now, most of the times you learn not to trust that…

Delicate Condition - Danielle Valentine
Delicate Condition was a book I was looking forward to reading even before I found out it was going to be the inspiration for the 13th season of American Horror Story. I am interested in reading books about motherhood, I even have a shelf here on GoodReads, and more often than not, these books tend to have their fair share of horror blend in, because motherhood isn’t easy, and there are dark…

Becoming the Boogeyman
Becoming the Boogeyman is the sequel to Richard Chizmar’s “fake true crime novel” Chasing the Boogeyman. I stumbled across this book in January 2022 and ever since then I have recommended it on all my platforms and frequently discussed it for its fresh take on a thriller novel: the story takes inspiration from Chizmar’s real childhood town and memories, including friends and family and several…

In These Hallowed Halls - A Dark Academia Anthology
Ever since it was announced both by Titan Books and by some of the authors in it which I follow, I’ve wanted to read this Dark Academia anthology. I am currently writing my master thesis on DA as a literary genre, and so I’m always looking for new books to add to my ever growing list of DA titles. This anthology also features some authors that I love so I wanted to read their stories as well. Now…

The Ancient Nine - Ian K. Smith
The Ancient Nine is THE dark academia book if you’re looking for a book about secret societies. “Oh, you might be thinking, but what about Ninth House?” Well, my friend, Ninth House is an excellent book as well, but the two novels portray of the concept could not be more different. First, Ninth House is set in Yale, while The Ancient Nine is set in Harvard. While Yale has its secret societies,…

Manacled - SenLinYu
I’ve wanted to read Manacled for about a year now, but the sheer size of it made me reluctant to even pick it up. I was going through yet another reading slump this August and scrolling through my Kindle I stumbled upon the file. I opened it and decided to read the first chapter. I was immediately hooked and could not stop. This fanfic is one of the best things I’ve ever read in my entire life,…

None of This Is True - Lisa Jewell
None of This is True is Lisa Jewell’s most recent release and in my opinion the best thriller of 2023. We are introduced to Alix Summers, a podcast host who has recently turned 45, and on the day of her birthday, she met her “birthday twin” a.k.a Josie Fair. After a seemingly random encounter, Josie convinces Alix to record a podcast about her. What at first started as an apparently innocent…
