the understanding robin
Tim completely understanding that his training was different from Jason's and Dick's because Bruce was at a low point but still not really trusting him to train Damian. As much as he hated the pompous brat, a small part of him was relieved when Dick took over his Robin training. Logically, Tim knew Bruce was better now. He knew that Bruce would pull his punches when weapons sparring, he knew Bruce was picky about the missions he allowed Damian on (even now when Damian had been Robin for years). The care Bruce shows Damian painfully relieving. He lets out a breath every time he finds Damian unbruised after a sparring session, ignoring the phantom aches of a younger him. Still, there was that dark wriggling mass inside him that made him keep an eye on the mats whenever he caught them training. One time he barely restrains himself from jumping up from the batcomputer and rushing over when Bruce flips Damian onto the mats a bit too roughly. Of course, Bruce is immediately muttering apologies, which Damian shrugs off easily, and cancels the rest of training so he can look him over. As the father and son duo leave, neither older man can look at the other. One day Bruce will apologize, will explain everything Tim already knows. Then Tim will do what he's always done, and ease his guilt with understanding.

Olympics AU
Dick is a gymnast (duh)
Jason is a boxer
Steph and Cass are a tennis doubles team
Tim skateboards (reluctantly)
Duke does beach volleyball
Damian is a fencer (again duh)
Bruce is a retired Olympic Fencing gold medalist who coaches Damian but has encouraged all of his children to pursue their athletics to the highest level. Some of them (like Jason who he rescued from an abusive coach) he's found through the Olympics. So he's like known in the space for just having a shit town of incredibly gifted children who he's really proud of. Tim, who had always preferred computers over sports, found he actually enjoyed skateboarding but knew his parents would hate it. His mom and dad were an Olympic skier and snowboarder respectively. He knew they wouldn't approve of his sport so he just had fun with it in secret. He meets Kon, Bart, and Cassie through the skateboarding scene in Gotham. It's all fun and games until his parents figure out he's been sneaking out and find out about his secret. They're pissed and ground him until a video Kon posts goes viral and people start reaching out. Suddenly, his parents are way more on board and Tim, who was doing this as a kind of stress relief, is forced to take everything really seriously. This kills his enjoyment of the sport and eventually, he winds up at the Olympics. It's there that he meets Bruce's brood because their accommodations in the Olympic Village and right next to his. He gets into shenanigans with them (maybe they don't realize he's an athlete at first bc he resembles a baby bird). They catch on to the fact that Tim isn't stoked to be there and see how horrible his parents are and work to get them removed as his coaches and manager and Bruce files for emergency custody. Alternatively, Bruce threatens Tim's parents to behave better and offers to take Tim in to further his training which is perfect in his parents' eyes so they ship him off to Bruce. Fast forward a year later and the newspaper headlines are all just: Bruce has adopted yet another Olympic gold medalist.

Harry, you have your mother's eyes and father's smile (try not to hate it)
I think a part of Harry, deep down, hated his appearance. That part of him despised every reference to James and Lily Potter. Harry would have traded every heroic deed, any amount of gold, for his parents to have lived. But they hadn't and he is reminded of that every time he meets someone. He can never be just Harry, he must be James and Lily's boy. I think that Harry would have sat for hours looking into a mirror wondering what parts of him belonged to who. Green eyes would glare back at him, eyes that everyone told him belonged to someone else, and a twisted smile whose lips had once told jokes in a past life. He knew his face was a near photocopy of his dad's. It was only ever the first thing anyone said to him. I think every time Sirius called him James that part of him grimaced. Every time Aunt Petunia had been cruel to him that part taunted her to meet his eyes. I think that part of Harry kicked and screamed at the fact that the only feature he could claim as his own was given to him by a homicidal maniac. A lightning bolt scar was the only thing that made him Harry Potter and not James with Lily's eyes. I think a small part of Harry was so relieved when he turned thirty-three and no one had told him how much he looked like anyone in years.
The larger part of him ached with the knowledge that his face, his features, were the only living memory of his parents left.

The worst thing to crawl out of Crime Alley
Growing up Jason thought only the worst things crawled out of Crime Alley. The drugs that blinded his mom, the heavy hand of his father, the mugger down the street who kept taking his lunch money until he stopped carrying any. It's a sickness that infects anything it touches. All things festered and blackened until they were ruined in his neighborhood. Not even Batman liked to show his face around Jason's home (because they were all destined to be ruined). Then Willis disappeared and his mom went and overdosed. Jason learned some good manages to survive between the sidewalk cracks and crumbling buildings. From the ladies on the street who warned him about cops to the older boy who taught him how to jack a tire. Sure, the darkness lurked behind every corner but it made some people fight harder to protect the light around them. And Jason, ever the moth, tried to stick close to the light (maybe he was not destined to be ruined). Then Bruce swooped in and taught him that not all of the worst things clawed out of Crime Alley. Unanswered riddles and toxin that makes your worst nightmares real wriggle their way into his nightmares beside the needles. Evil was not unique to his origins (he was not destined to be ruined). The world had plenty of wounds, sick and oozing, if he looked close enough. It was up to him to be the balm. Until the deranged cackles of an equally disturbed clown ring through his head as he dies. He comes back ruined with green staining his vision. Standing over a dying Robin, blood on his hands using the old moniker of his own murderer, Jason learns he was right. Only the worst things crawl out of Crime Alley.

What of God's flesh?
If we are made in god's image is our flesh the same? do we both scar? does god have holes in its hands and feet? when the weather shifts do its shoulders ache? is it worse for god who can never die? a being who made heaven an eternal sanctuary, one it can never enjoy knowing the inhabitants are seeking refuge from horrors it created. is god just as restless as us? just as scarred as us? is god as human as we are? i cannot decide if any belief i might have strengthens or wavers at the thought.

Tim Drake's eating habits as an unsupervised child
Just imagine little Tim Drake all alone in his big mansion making food for himself for the first time. He's like maybe 8 and no 8 year old has a sophisticated palate no matter their tax bracket. So, TIm just has the most horrific food tastes known to man. Like he comes over to Wayne Manor for brunch and he's giving Alfred a heart attack as the butler watches this 14 year old spread jelly and marshmallow fluff onto handmade, wholegrain waffles. The first time he spends the night with Kon at the Kent Farm he's nearly taken straight back to Gotham because he's dipping Ma's famous fried chicken in soy sauce. He gets a whole article in the Gotham Gazette when he gets papped eating a hot dog with chocolate sauce and mustard (#choccymustard trends on Gotham twitter for a week). This kid has the most unhinged palate and the best part is up until Robin he doesn't really understand it because there is no one there to tell him it's weird and rich people eat weird shit all the time. He's just living his life eating waffles with jam and hotdogs with chocolate sauce because that sounded delicious to 8 year old Timothy Drake. Bruce just immediately accepted it like he did with Dick's incilination to climb every chandelier ever or Jason's penchant for making mix tapes (like honest to god cd mix tapes) of audiobooks with wild ass names and leaving them around the manor. Everyone else is horrified though.

Sirius's Long Hair
The first act of rebellion Sirius ever decided on was growing his hair out. Or at least that's what he'd tell anyone who asked what made him want to do it. They all believed it with sad smiles and pitiful glances. Everyone except the Potters. The Potters knew it was far from his first act of rebellion, that was reserved for his sorting into Gryffindor, or his first prank against Slytherins, or the rows of muggle CDs and books that lined his shelves. No, this was an act of safety. Gone was the clean-cut perfection that was expected of a Black. Gone was the fear of loose clothing and long hair, things to be grabbed easily and pulled. Replacing that fear was a softer Sirius, one he had never felt safe enough to inhabit. The first time Sirius steps off the train, ready to return home, with hair that curls gently around his ears Euphemia nearly weeps. Sirius tells them it's not a big deal, and bats away curious hands, but he's grinning the whole time. It only falls once, as he watches Regulus, curls cut close to his scalp, greet their parents with a flinch and a nod.

The life expectancy of tyrannical dictators
Someone told me Voldemort was 71 when he died and I couldn't stop laughing thinking about that. Like his entire goal was to live forever, to evade death, and in his pursuit of this goal he dies at fucking 71. That's not even the average life expectancy for men, like not even close. It's just a bit ironic that the man whose sole goal was to never die ended up having a shorter life than the average man. And the cherry on top is he spent like a solid decade of that dancing around Romanian forests, Hogwarts, and graveyards as a creepy little wraith dude.

Beryl Grace and Zeus: the closest thing Zeus had to commitment
What's the greatest love story in PJO? Is it Percabeth or Caleo? Maybe it could be Sally and Paul? I've been thinking about it with the new tv show and I've come to my own answers but in the process, I was left thinking about Beryl Grace. The woman who seduced Zeus twice in two different forms. There was something so particular to her, something so inherently unique to her, that Zeus felt it in all his being. Hera can say what she wants but Zeus went back to her, played house with that family he had so little yet too much claim to. With Beryl there was no Jupiter nor Zeus, he was not a being divided. For a moment, a brief, fleeting moment, he had been whole with her. Isn't that what we all search for? Someone we can be whole with. For Zeus it was Beryl, she was his glue. For Beryl, though, Zeus was her undoing. How tragic is that? How deeply saddening is it to know that the closest the infamous, mythological playboy Zeus ever came to committing was with this alcoholic, narcissistic tv star. Maybe he saw himself in her, maybe he saw all the people he'd let down. It hardly matters because it was enough to make him stay. So he tried instead to protect their kids the best ways he could think of. And he never again found someone to make him whole, never laid with another twice. You cannot convince me that Zeus almost loved Beryl Grace and that is a feat nothing short of a miracle.
