Going digital Dutch

If you are just starting out on your Dutch learning journey, it can be quite handy to use an app as a way to build up your vocabulary and your bank of sentence structures. It's an easily portable way to take your learning on the go with you.

Most of the vocabulary that I've learned has been thanks to Duolingo. There is a strong emphasis on translation in the excercises. Also, the app will throw your mistakes and errors back at you until those sentences start to haunt you in your dreams. 😲 But, practice makes perfect, right?

The sentences have been added thanks to helpful native speakers. 😁 While using it, you practice: reading, listening, writing, translating and even speaking. En het is helemaal gratis! I think they've done a nice job of "gamifying" language learning. If you you enjoy games and like to learn in a kinesthetic way, I think the app would suit you nicely. When you are feeling particularly competitive and motivated, your hard work may just pay off and take you to the top of your leaderboard! 👏👏👏

There is also a paid version which would allow you to study offline and avoid the ads. They've got plenty of other languages on there, as well.

ondertiteling / subtitles

Something that has really helped me in learning Dutch has been ondertiteling.

It helps so much to bridge the gap between what is heard vs. what is said. Sounds have a way of disappearing when you are learning certain languages. It also helps to engage you more by speed-reading if the speakers are talking quickly.

One time, my boyfriend and I went to the cinema to see a movie in Polish. I was worried that I wouldn't understand enough and therefore wouldn't get much out of the film. I really had to put my Nederlands to the test in order to get through it. I was relieved to find that this particular movie was not dialogue heavy. They did not speak too quickly either. Het was een goede uitdaging, goed voor mijn hersenen. I was proud of myself for having understood most of the dialogue. I definitely recommend it as a fun way to incorporate your studies with the films/videos/series that you enjoy watching. 😁

Op een dag, toen ik door mijn buurt liep, was er een man die onverstaanbare dingen schreeuwde.

Ga naar de bieb, nu dat het open is. 😉

Toen ik studeerde voor de inburgeringsexamens ging ik bijna elke dag naar de bibliotheek.

Ze hadden een speciale sectie met veel nuttige boeken, waaronder Welkom in Nederland. Met name dit boek geeft je 95% van de informatie die je nodig hebt voor het examen maatschappij.

Maar naast de boeken kun je je Nederlands oefenen door wekelijks naar het taalcafé te gaan dat zoveel bibliotheken aanbieden. Het is een leuke manier om mensen te ontmoeten en tegelijk Nederlands te oefenen spreken. Soms worden er ook spelletjes gespeeld. 😋

Epic Dutch Fail #2: niet eetbaar

Wat is hier de fail? Is het dat ik een plakje chorizo ​​probeer te eten alsof het haring is?

Ways to learn Dutch: Tip # 3

Afluisteren / Eavesdropping

This is going to get a bit emotional. 😢 When I first moved to the Netherlands and started spending time with my boyfriend's family and friends, I felt warmly welcomed and yet simultaneously alienated. Hoezo? Well, I had the misconception that everyone would just "turn on that switch" and speak in English because I was there. Needless to say, that wasn't the case most of the time. And, it is understandable as we can usually express ourselves the best in our native language.

There I was, staring down at the stamppot on my plate or the drink in my hand. I heard the lively conversation and laughter around me. I looked up and observed the facial expressions and gestures in order to try to get an inkling of what the conversation could be about, but I might as well have been listening to a white noise machine. I was completely clueless, and this made me feel quite isolated.

However, in order to reframe this and to halt my waterworks before they start, these experiences prompted me to study harder and to eavesdrop more.

I'm not suggesting that you get two cups, punch a hole in the bottom of each one, connect them with a string, place one cup against your neighbor's wall and listen through the other. 🤣

But, when you are in public, you can listen to a conversation between kids/parents (if you are just starting your Dutch learning journey) or teens/adults and try to understand the gist of what they are saying. If you live with a Dutchie and they are thuis aan het werken, try not to tune out their meeting as white noise. Rather, try to pick up some of the phrases/sentence structures that they are using or the general topic of the meeting.

If you haven't tried this yet, I hope you try it soon. I also hope that it helps you to boost your Dutch skills and feel more included here in Nederland. :)

Drie korte verhalen over vogels en ik:

1. Voor elk jaar dat ik in Nederland gewoond heb, heeft een vogel op me gepoept. Dus....

Ik wacht nog op de vogel van 2021...

2. Op een middag liep ik onder een brug door. Plots voelde ik een zwart-witte vogel mijn zitvlak aanvallen. Ouch!

3. Na het kopen van wat kibbeling en frietjes langs het strand van Kijkduin, dook een zeemeeuw naar beneden om een ​​hapje te pakken. Ik schreeuwde! Maar dat trok alleen maar meer zeemeeuwen aan. Ze sloegen mijn doos op de grond en verslonden hem in een oogwenk. Ik zei een bitterzoete "Alsjeblieft." tegen hen. Lucky birds!
