Light Yagami is a Fucking Moron: An Analysis of Light Yagami’s Actions and Their Consequences According to Current Psychological Research

Let me begin by saying that this is going to be long, and I’m going to be writing this more in the style of a lecture as opposed to a straight through scientific paper. I enjoy humor and don’t want to completely bore you with heavy talk, so I will have moments that are biased, sarcastic, and intended for entertainment. The research itself, however, does not have my same biases and will be condemning Light for not actually researching what the hell he was doing, at least in the United States. On top of all of this, please feel free to message me if you want one of the articles/books, and I will do my best to get you a copy! With that being said, let’s jump on in.

Without the death note is more probable that L will end becoming a murderer than Light.

I would at least agree that the probability of Light becoming a murderer if he had not found the Death Note is pretty low (which goes for most Death Note users). There’s no evidence that he had any murderous thoughts at all before he tested the Death Note, and killing someone with just a few pen strokes is, compared to other methods, extremely easy and impersonal. While not everyone would have chosen to kill people like Light did, the circumstances were undeniable extraordinary.

But I also have a hard time coming up with a believable scenario in which L becomes are a murderer, haha. He can be quite callous and is, in general, less interested in morality than Light is. And in a way, his lack of passion regarding such things makes him less interested in, for example, getting rid of certain types of people or in punishing people. He’s less angry than Light, less concerned with the state of the world and he's emotionally distant from other people. Also, at least during the Yotsuba arc Light seems to value human life infinitely more than L does.

Still, there are tons of circumstances that could make someone a murderer. I certainly don’t think L is incapable of killing someone in theory. But the fact that there are so many possibilities also makes it hard for me to compare L and Light and their murder-potential. In some ways they’re also incredibly similar...
