The Greatest Showman: A Review

Spoilers below, obviously.

Okay, let’s me just start off by saying that I didn’t think I would be seeing this movie. I thought it was interesting, but in my crazy busy college life, I thought this would be one of those movies I would see once it was out on Blu-Ray.

But boy, am I glad I saw this.

Just the first few seconds of the movie, hearing the song “The Greatest Show” literally sent chills up my spine. Seriously, if you guys even have the slightest interest in this movie, you have to go and see it at the theater. This is one of those films that is simply gorgeous on the big screen, and I can’t stress that enough!

Everyone involved in this film, from the cast, to the composers, to the director, editors, costume designers; you can see the love they had for this movie! This is certainly a passion project for everyone involved, and not in the bad way.

And there is certainly no amount of praise that could be enough when it comes to this film’s soundtrack.

Now, as wonderful as all this is, the movie is not perfect. Putting historical accuracy aside (because when you look at a film like this, you need to just focus on the facts of the film), this is a musical loosely based off, I repeat, LOOSELY based off the life of one P.T. Barnum, who wasn’t exactly a man of charm like Hugh Jackman (read some books on this guy, you’ll see what I mean).

The weakest point in this film I would say would be the character of Jenny Lind, played by Rebecca Ferguson.

Now, I say this not because of Rebecca Ferguson’s performance, which was perfectly fine. I felt the film spent a lot of time focusing on her character, only for her to be used as a conflict to Jackman’s P.T. Barnum. Instead of focusing on this possible affair (which doesn’t happen in the film, as Barnum refuses her intentions), the movie could have spent more time with the characters in the circus.

Other than that, the only other complaints I have were the pacing, which at times seemed rather rushed to me. Seriously, I couldn’t tell you how much time has passed from the start of the film, to the end.

But now that that’s over, let talk about the things I liked about each character.

Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum,

I love this man, everything he does is amazing. Watching this, I could tell he was having so much fun playing the character of P.T. Barnum. Hugh Jackman is a talented singer, and an amazing actor. When he’s on screen, you can’t help but watch him. Like the real Barnum, he’s truly the “ringmaster” of this movie (Can Hugh Jackman pick me up on an elephant?).

And the relationship between Barnum and his wife in this film is one of those married couples I really enjoyed seeing. Their relationship felt very real, believable. Seeing the growth during their journey together on screen didn’t feel off or random. I appreciated that.

And despite the slightly cliche message at the end of the film (Barnum “discovering” that watching his daughters grow up is the greatest show), I liked seeing them work everything out between them and their family.

Zac Efron and Zendaya,

I pair these two together as their characters are basically tied together throughout the film. Their relationship is one of those classic “love at first sight” ones. Not that that’s a bad thing, in fact, I would even say it feels right in a movie like this (for god’s sake, they literally sing about rewriting the stars).

But they were really sweet, I loved seeing them perform together. Again, I wish we would have a little bit more time with these two, getting a stronger relationship between them so I could feel just a bit more for them. But other than that, “Rewrite the Stars” is literally on repeat on my spotify.

Also, loved “The Other Side” scene with Barnum and Cartlyle in the bar. Moments like this are things I look for in movies! It felt personal and gave these two a base for their friendship.

And lastly, the one, the only, Keala Settle as Lettie Lutz,

I LOVED HER! Seriously, when I walked out of the cinema, I heard someone yell “The bearded lady is my hero!” I love that, seeing an audience connect to a character that, in most cases, wouldn’t. Despite not having a ton of screen time, her character definitely steals the show, and you really feel for what she and the other performers go through when Barnum is shutting them out of the public spotlight.

Overall, The Greatest Showman is a fun and beautiful film. If I had to give it a letter grade, I say it’s a solid B. It’s not a perfect film, but it certainly is a grand and fantastic tale of one of the most interesting phenomenons in the world. So if you haven’t yet, go and see The Greatest Showman, especially in the theater, where is really is allowed to shine.

No Idea

I have no idea what I want to do in the future or even now.

All I know is that not everything is going to have a major purpose.

People expect me to have every moment maped out

But here is the thing, who the hell cares.

It's fine if I make mistakes and its okay if I change my mind.

But as long as I am happy you should be happy with it to.

This is my life and my choices so just sit back and enjoy the adventures.

This is a about to be a crazy ride and nothing is going to stop it.

Loss for words(I love you)

When I look at you so many thoughts run through my brain but none come out of my mouth when I try to speak. I am at a loss of words and feel that whatever I say is going to drive you away. I wish with all my heart you know how I feel so I don't have to hold it in anymore. I love you and I hope you love me but neither of us will know, if I can't speak a single word to you. Please be patient I will find my voice but until then we can sit in silence and enjoy the idea of us being together.
