It was nice catching up with old band mate Greg Ginn and Black Flag in New Orleans tonight. The time I spent working with this man were the most inspiring, intense and ultimately rewarding years of my life. I learned so much about discipline, hard work, taking chances and giving your absolute all from him. No one in music ever worked harder or gave so much to so many. How many musicians would be willing to spend a week locked up in the LA County jail for the right to control their music. How many could survive 8-12 hours of rehearsal a day, every single day for months on end to make sure everything was as tight and intense as possible all the while running the largest independent rock music label in the world and being considered one of the most influential guitarists and punk rock songwriters of the past 40 years. Everyone from Nirvana to Metallica to White Zombie have been directly influenced by this man and his many accomplishments. There is no one else who could have done all of this but Greg. I stumbled across the Lo Sound Desert docu. on @netflix a few weeks ago and I remembered I kept this cool poster from a show we played out there. I was marginally aware of the Desolation Center desert generator shows during the eighties and how influential they had been with bands like @wattfrompedro and the Minutemen, Meatpuppets, Sonic Youth and Perry Ferrell’s early band Psi Com participating. These shows had a direct influence on the creation of @lollapalooza as well as @burningman and @coachella . One of the OG’s of this amazing scene is @mariolalli . All roads in desert music lead to Mario. In 1994, he along with fellow @fatsojetsonband bass player Larry Lalli opened Rhythm and Brews in Indio, CA. Part clubhouse, rehearsal pad, restaurant and bar it became ground zero for the scene and beyond. During it’s short existence every great alt band from the Melvins to Bikini Kill played there. My band (Greg Ginn) were fortunate to headline the first ever show there. Right away you could tell this place and this scene were special. Fatso Jetson were rehearsing when we arrived and I believe it was their first gig as a band that night. Tour and label mates Rig also shared the stage along with Solarfeast who went on to legendary status in their own right. Ginn signed FatsoJetson soon afterwards to SST and released a couple of their albums. That’s why bands like Kyuss @queensofthestoneage and @eodmofficial consider Mario and his amazing guitar skills, songwriting and scene building with efforts like Rhythm and Brews the Godfather of the desert scene. In the spring of 1996 I was doing some freelance work as a digital video editor. It wasn’t that I was a great editor but I did have access to tons of Avid equipment from my day job. I had been working on an EPK for an Aussie musician named David Hilder who had just placed one of his songs on The Cable Guy movie soundtrack. The project was being directed by @onditimoner with footage shot by her brother @davidtimoner . Ondi has since gone on to win the Grand Jury Prize twice at the Sundance Film Festival and continues to do amazing work through her own production company. After we finished the project, she invited me to a party the next weekend at a house in Beverly Hills near Coldwater Canyon. She said all of the wildest, young LA people will be there and by the way it’s at Timothy Leary’s house. Of course this was an invitation I couldn’t pass up. I learned that apparently Leary had received a terminal cancer diagnosis and was throwing insane parties as he neared his last days. I got there late after going to see a friend’s band play in the South Bay. People were everywhere with EDM music bumping at a high volume. Everyone was beautiful, everyone was happy and everyone was tripping. Seriously tripping. I had been to many Dead shows but I had never seen anything like this. No way I was going near that punch bowl. It was like everyone in Hollywood wanted to turn on in the presence of the guru of LSD before he passed on to another realm. Leary’s people kept him isolated in his bedroom because he was so weak at that point but that did nothing to deter the spirit of the evening. I never found Ondi and since I don’t get high I left after about an hour. On the way home I thought to myself, this is a long way from Freeny, Mississippi. A month later Dr. Timothy Leary was dead. He passed away in the house where a few weeks earlier hundreds had celebrated his cultural impact on our society by tuning in, turning on and dropping out. I have been a fan of this guy for 20 years. I’m not a wrestling fan per se’ but I do admire any endeavor when someone takes things past the traditionally defined limits into the sublime unknown. We all have our favorites (Coletrane, Jordan, Hendrix, Jaco, Rossi). To me, in his field this guy is their equivalent. The apex of that career was on a June night 21 years ago last Friday. On that night this man did things to his body for our entertainment that are still unfathomable to me. How he did not die is a miracle. The infamous Hell in a Cell match vs Undertaker. I watch the video about once a year just to get inspired. It demonstrates what is possible with preparation, dedication and teamwork. Taking chances with literally no safety net to save you.
