2876. Lately

This is "Lately." Does anybody really know how to understand.

There seemed to be many problems happening lately. For instance, that little light on the stove that tells you the stovetop is hot wouldn't turn off. Was it a sensor? Something wrong with the burner? Probably would have to call the landlords and tell them about it. But we couldn't just willy-nilly call the landlords as we had recently taken in a stray dog. (Pets were forbidden re the lease.) If we told the landlords about the light, they might want to come and check it, perhaps try and fix it themselves (they are very handy). And if that were the case, we'd have to be ready to hide Johnny (that's what we named the stray dog.) Hiding a dog is a very tough business, especially since he is very loud, barks at all times of day. Our neighbors have complained and even retaliated by getting a dog of their own (a very loud yappy little tyrant.) When the garbage truck goes by in the morning, it's like a cacophonous symphony of barking. Maybe the dogs are both talking to each other. Telling each of their owners' secrets to each other. Who knows? It would be so easy to be loud like that. To be on all the time. To let someone else worry about the consequences for once.
