OOC: A small thing I want to point out here because it doesn’t get talked about - do the Gurak definitely lack some characterization in canon overall? Yes, sadly - you don’t find out much about them admittedly.

BUT it’s very much shown that Zesha cares for his twin brother Zepha throughout gameplay. They’re almost always by each other’s sides, and Zesha even physically supports Zepha when the latter collapses, when they lose their battle against Zael and the others, at the end of their boss battle. And later on, when both brothers fight the party separately and Zepha dies, Zesha immediately wants to avenge him.

As far as we know from canon, Zepha was the closest person that Zesha ever had. Sure, they’ve probably communicated with their fellow Gurak soldiers for various reasons and atttended to Lord Zangurak’s needs and commands, but Zesha does have a caring heart to him deep down. 

The reason Zesha’s solo boss battle occurs isn’t even because Zangurak tells him to battle the party. It’s because he wanted to get revenge for Zepha’s death. 

Even Zangurak warns Zesha not to die going up against the party because he knows Zesha wants revenge. (And Zangurak, mind you, just earlier straight-up abandoned civilian Gurak to get invaded by the Lazulis knights in the game as part of a bigger scheme to trick Lazulis Island’s forces into letting their guards down, and at this point in the game’s events the Gurak are slowly basically losing the war now despite their final/third invasion on Lazulis Island). And Zangurak probably would’ve known that the party was a big threat to his plans at this point, so sending Zesha in solo just after Zepha got offed would likely lead to Zesha’s demise too (making the attempt at revenge all for naught). 

But the fact that Zangurak doesn’t entirely stop Zesha from going after the party for revenge also shows that Zangurak acknowledges that the brothers are close. Whether it’s out of sincerity that he lets Zesha go against the party solo despite the risks or soley to slow down the party from catching up with Zangurak completing his plans is unknown, but still.

Introducing Zepha

Hi, I'm Auri and I'm reinventing the wheel making a voxel game / engine. Recently I've managed to scrape together a really cool RGB voxel lighting algorithm so I'm going to make a post about it!

One thing that was really important to me when designing my game's lighting was that I wanted the static lighting to fit in with more fancy graphical effects. That means that Minecraft's lackluster diamond-shaped lighting wasn't going to cut it. I wanted spherical light and I wanted colors!

To accomplish this, I split the lighting into 6 channels. RGB for block light, and RGB for sky light. (technically there's 9 channels but that's too complicated to get into right now). I also store the direction that light comes from so that I can build a pseudo-sphere of light around the source.

To make things performant, I had to delve deep into micro-optimizations like Word Level Parallelism, which is a technique to do the same operation on multiple numbers packed into a single integer. The algorithm supports a huge dynamic range for colors and brightnesses, and operates in real time.

Any color can be used, and bright lights even overexpose. Lights can span chunks in radius!

Art of a skyship I designed based upon this post by @trumoi. I was really inspired by the concept and wanted to make something for this setting myself! I've been calling this ship the Anomalocaris, since radiodont bodyplans were the main inspiration for the general shape. The symbol on the tail fin is an Eyemonk rune that reads "hunter".

These are the crew: captain Joanna Hollander is missing her left eye and parts of her left leg and right arm as a result of a curse that causes her to slowly fade away. As she fades physically, she also becomes more and more detached from reality, causing her to not feel emotions as strongly as before. She turned to hunting sky leviathans for the thrill of it, to try and regain some of her emotions. The patch on her shoulder has the alchemical symbol for mercury, which is also a symbol for volatility. She is joined by her childhood friend Cyrus, professional walking enby shirtless scene, and Zepha, the Eyemonk wind mage. The runes on his tabard read "ride the tempest".
