would love to read your thoughts on nick zedd! he's an... intriguing... person

hiiii hi thank you for facilitating my reading an hour’s worth of interviews, reviews, & encounters in film threat and various other publications concerning one of my favourite things that’s ever happened — new york film in the 1970’s & 80’s.

so, for starters, here’s what iv seen of nick zedd’s: thrust in me, they eat scum, manhattan love suicides, the wild world of lydia lunch, & geek maggot bingo.

iv also seen his documented work as a s e x worker & his roles in stuff like kern’s “submit to me,” so iv seen him elsewhere and whatnot. iv read many of his publications with the underground film bulletin. i’ll say, positively, that his work to review directors like john waters & jim jarmusch before they ever got any success or notoriety by most publications, pre-stranger than paradise and even pre-permanent vacation is awesome and i’m so glad somebody was there to document and attempt to give platform to these directors/films/actors before major institutions ever cared. he’s also responsible for coining the name “cinema of transgression,” + writing the manifesto in an issue of UFB. here it is ! look how fuckin’ cool that richard hell cover is !

but, y’know. i understand why lydia & richard won’t ever talk to the guy again & seem to not have since the 1980’s. for the most part, it seems he’s all bark & no bite & wants to believe he is more substantially important than he is. though COT is one of my favourite art movements, i recognise it is largely irrelevant to the larger picture & is a niche within a niche in film history. i don’t think it’s wildly important, just beyond cool. i think that’s enough to justify anything’s existence: it is liked. i like it. so it’s chill. of course zedd once provided the quote “i know i won’t be remembered, but neither will you.” three cheers for self awareness ? i like it.

i go back and forth between whether or not i believe a thing he says. i don’t think “police state” was banned in toronto, actually, though it might have been. i think he was kinda peeved that richard kern got more hype and vitriol than he did, that feminist groups protested richard kern movies and not his films. but also ? other than police state ? what were your films about that would garner them protesting ? like unless you want to attract the tipper gore types, there’s no protest other than maybe these are vaguely unwatchable. lydia’s writing as a woman in her own experiences w/ abusive relationships & her own s e x u a l experiences realised by richard kern attracted the ire of many feminist groups who sometimes went so far as to sabotage screenings of “fingered” & “the right side of my brain.” inadvertently, they were silencing the pov of another woman trying to express herself with the Help of a really interesting director/cinematographer. that happened to be kern.

it seems that he wants to have been as outrageous as people like kern or waters but lacked something worth actually saying. “police state” was a cool flick but it isn’t the first anti-police film ever made and it isn’t particularly remarkable as one, either. he is known for coining the phrase and writing the manifesto, which is good, but it seems he’s best known for talking without action. his movies are really funny and i enjoy “they eat scum,” it’s hilarious and so is “geek maggot bingo.” but they aren’t revolutionary. he’s very self important. i guess most artists are, it’s fine, it’s chill. he’s funny but dude my man is richard kern.

i have books about the idiot and VHS tapes and a poster on my wall, i love richard kern. i love him. nick zedd is kinduva means to an end and a really good face.

BUT ALSO — we’re talking not low budget, we’re talking NO budget. so the objectivity of these films are even more speculative, i don’t really care. they’re fun and the ones with points are rly obviously about something. objectivity doesn’t exist when talking about no budget films. nick zedd has made a spectacle of himself his entire career, AS his career. then he did something, don’t know what, that made the entire lower east side hate him and he moved to mexico city and no one likes him as a person anymore. but i respect the grind. i love the underground film bulletin.

pro: everything else. i ESPECIALLLLLLLY like how they want to work behind the camera!!!!!!! it seems like that was boun's goal all along which really excites me as a ~filmmakeur~ and i like that prem may try it too. i laughed when he didnt know what a slate was but he didn't know about production and he's a green actor so i can believe that but he shouldnt sell himself short cos being an actor can give you a lot of insight into the behind the scenes work. it also makes u appreciate us more :)

this makes me want to hug my friends lmao i havent seen or touched friends and i'm fucking single and im high alone GOD WHY!!!!

anyway my point was that im high and love them and i hope they do art >:)

lastly, i hope they are friends forever they have great chemistry and their true actual care for e/o. i was thinking about how i don't ship people but i enjoy seeing good relationships esp in this context. bl is really devoid of a lot of shit but i think what's the best thing about seeing two people who share a space and are being looked at is the chemistry of how that dynamic works as co-workers and, hopefully, close friends. that's why pretend camraderie is important when doing (dumb) press-circuits (so people can make ze $)

it's always nice to see natural chemistry or people learning their rship or even people who may not be close after shooting (in any context, but here in particularly) but find themselves as older casual friends to catch up with. since this genre is so heavily focused on blurring those lines or whatever when things start getting weird (like from exposure and lack of good skilsl of acting and/or care or whatever idk im high) or they have shitty rships in between them for whatever reason u can immediately tell

so like oh your chemistry is real ! on top of that for some it's like oh real and ur playing characters that are falling in love. idk what im saying it's just reaally exciting to meeee u have a perosn with u supporting u thru the same process u r. also with two people there's always going to be someone who picks up not...slack but is more into a leadership type position (i hate using this word) but somoene you rely on if you arent the type to want to take care of eveyrthing—a lot of friends and couples do it (i do with my best friends. literally i'll be quiet and let them do things im too embarrassed to do but im still insanely forceful and i will play that role for them if needed) so bounprem have that in their natures and boun being older and slightly mroe mature (or i would say again different natures who knows)

it's the same type of joy you get and excitement you feel when ensemble casts truly like each other and it's ~natural energie~ (like in my engineer the whole feel of it i'm just like omg u guys are FRIENDS fijshoufija theyre so cute; hope theyre all okay) it also shows that you have someone/people you trust and having fun on set is really important. filming should be fun. a lot of times i don't like finishing shows because if the chemistry is good for the cast i feel like empty, like im leaving the set. that's a really good feeling tho!!!

anyway i think a big part of it (im still trying to articulate myself) is the fact that they dont have to be real but have the capacity to be and can set the limits of their rship but it's really nice to have a really influential set of people who want the best for you and vice versa esp if someone knows u more intimately in a capacity many people may not experience/understand because of ur job (IE showing as ~lovers~ but being friends irl even tho uve been very intimate for simulation and artistic value. this is based on a specific set of principles btw i'm not including sex work here bc it's also very different and a job in a different way but it doesnt make it lesseer than anything. all jobs suck tho)

ALSO I realize how easily their personalities fit winteam not in a 'they dont have to try" way cos they do and should. they're ok actors and the more u do and learn etc but the chemistry tests they probably had with them probably solidified that even though they are very diff than their characters. being an insanely good swimmer from jump gives the watcher the impression of probably perfectionism, a bit of torment, perhaps dumb jock syndrome, and having to be insanely good; for win the tattoos are an instant signifier instantly (if u c them) cos it's always like ~ooh what's the story~* lmao

self-indulgent reflection on being on tumblr

so i recently hit 1000 followers on here and this blog has existed for almost exactly 8 years, so i wanted to ramble about tumblr and my experience of it for awhile. under the cut so definitely feel free to ignore this.

i started this blog right around when i was fourteen and had just started high school. at that point, i was out to my parents (and no one else) as bi, i had an inkling i was Struggling with something but i had no idea what and felt like i couldnt actually acknowledge it, and i had left leaning but very vague politics. tumblr definitely has shaped my journey around sexuality/gender/mental health/politics, both for good and for ill. 

for good: 

seeing other ppl talk about being lesbians helped me realize i could be a lesbian w/o being a traitor to the concept of bisexuality. hearing trans ppl talk about their experiences and explaining non-binary stuff and dysphoria helped me understand what i was going through 

i don’t like talking about my mental health stuff in detail on here, but suffice to say, i was Going Through it in high school. i’m still going through it now, but i am in a much better place (thank you medication and 7 years of therapy!). seeing ppl talk about the weird, dumb, awful parts of mental illness let me acknowledge that i was going through those things too, that i wasnt like evil for feeling like that, that i could change. people talking about adhd/autism was particularly helpful---being able to identify why i’d always felt like my brain just didn’t work right is the first step in the (ongoing) process of not hating myself for the way my brain works

politics is definitely the area where i think tumblr was the best for me. i got exposed to so many opinions i definitely wasn’t hearing in school, from intelligent, well-read people who could articulate theory in ways i could understand. tumblr didn’t give me my politics and i didn’t learn everything i know about theory from it, but the communities of people i was around pointed me in the right directions. tumblr was also a good place to learn how to react to criticism. this doesn’t seem to be most people’s experience, but getting called out over minor things on tumblr genuinely helped me learn how to take a step back, look at my behavior, apologize, and try to change, which, as it turns out, is a helpful skill irl as well

for ill:

wrt sexuality and gender, it’s probably pretty obvious someone who’s journey is ‘cis bi girl -> cis with a million different microlabels -> nb w a million different microlabels for both sexuality and gender -> nb butch lesbian who’s not super into romance’ would have some bad times on tumblr. the bi circles i was in made being a lesbian seem like an immoral choice, the ‘’’mogai’’’ (or whatever u wanna call them) circles made me feel like i had to divy up and perfectly label every aspect of myself in a way that really wasn’t helpful for me, the lesbian circles i was in made me feel like being a lesbian was about ending up in a monogamous butch/femme cottagecore relationship and that there was something wrong with me for not really wanting that. to be clear i think microlabels can be very helpful for people/a monogamous butch/femme relationship is a perfectly fine thing to want, they just didn’t work for me. im very very glad ive reached a point in my life where i dont feel the need to stay up to date on the latest discourse and am more focused on finding a way to exist that is comfortable for me and supporting my community irl. 10/10 would recommend to everyone

not going to get deep into it, but social media is. not good for my brain in general. i still enjoy using tumblr, but these days im pretty careful to step back from it frequently and treat it as an occasional hobby. 

the cons of political stuff on tumblr are probably also very obvious. there are some just awful discussions on here and the culture surrounding the way we handle bad behavior and justice and accountability and working to become a better person and make up for the harm you’ve caused has historically been fucking awful and trying to unlearn it and find new ways to engage with this stuff is exhausting. 

for all that i’ve changed over the course of having this blog, this blog has stayed pretty fucking static. i started out being super into diana wynne jones and the iliad and those are still two of my biggest interests and things i talk about the most on here. there are definitely specific things that have petered away (i started this blog almost entirely to keep up with good omens fan stuff and i pretty much haven’t touched it since the miniseries came out, i haven’t sought out pacific rim/supernatural/elementary/mcu content in years), but im still pretty much interested in the same things. i like relatively small fandoms, i like weird side characters, i like to be a grumpy child playing with my toys in the corner. when a fandom im in gets popular, i tend to stop engaging with it entirely (hello rqg/tma/good omens/enola holmes!). i dont think its a pretentious ‘i liked it before it was cool’ thing so much as a ‘people get Weird and awful when a fandom hits a certain level of popularity and there’s too much content and i really, really hate the bad faith arguments larger fandoms tend to spawn’ thing. i’ll consume content from big fandoms, but i pretty much refuse to actually engage with them at this point.

one of the stranger parts of my experience of tumblr is the social side. i’ve never really known how people make friends online---how do you go from liking each other’s posts and occasionally replying to them to actually being friends who communicate off social media? i’ve had conversations with ppl on tumblr and i’ve had sort-of friendships that are contained to tumblr where i’d like to get to know them better, but i’ve never figured out how to do that. my best friend’s job is pretty much to make friends/connections on the internet (she’s an activist and artist), my dad knows people everywhere in the world from twitter, and i’m just sitting here like a little old grandpa who doesn’t understand how you can have internet friends. 

at this point in my life, i’m fine with this, but this has made me feel real fucking bad in the past---like, if everyone online, even the ppl who say they’re weird and brainbad in a similar way to me, can make friends on the internet, what’s wrong with me? particularly in high school and my first year of college, when i was just horribly lonely all the time, it made me feel super disconnected and like there was something fundamentally bad about me. these days, i’m a lot chiller about it. i use social media to engage with stuff i enjoy and share my thoughts about it. it’s okay that my social difficulties extend to me not knowing how to use the internet to socialize.

on a somewhat related topic, it’s wild that i have 1000 followers. obviously, that’s not an actually super large number and a huge number of them are probably bots or inactive. if you post consistently for eight years and follow lots of people, like i do, it’s not a surprise to end up with this many followers. it is also, thankfully, the sort of followers that are not fans. probably most ppl following this blog dont remember why they followed and dont know anything about me or my interests. this sounds like its meant to be depressing but it’s not. i like that my way of engaging w the internet lets me do pretty much whatever i want and no one will care. the mere concept of being. like. tumblr famous in any capacity, even just in one community/fandom, is viscerally horrifying to me. 

i really enjoy the space i’ve created for myself on here. on one hand, going back through my blog is obviously embarrassing and full of hating my past self. on the other hand, i now have a very nice collection of things i enjoy in this blog. i like seeing what i’ve been interested in and (when i’m in a good mental health place) i like to be able to remember how i thought and talked about the things i loved when i was younger. im not at the place in my life where i can love a younger version of myself, but sometimes i can laugh at zir with a level of fondness. 

i’ve always been paranoid about sharing details about my life on here (and the fact that my parents have always been able to see it certainly contributed), so the version of jack on here is a carefully curated version, who’s super enthusiastic about the things they love, was very conscientious about apologizing and trying to do better when ze messed up, and tried to be polite to others. that’s a younger version of myself that i’m closer to being able to have compassion for than the version i find in essays and poems and memories. 

i’m starting grad school in ten days and i’m still using the blog i started when i began high school. tumblr has helped me in a lot of ways and hurt me in a lot of ways, but i still have to admit that it’s been a significant factor in shaping me. i’d be incredibly embarrassed to admit that irl, but it’s true. other than my family and like one friend, this blog is one of the only things that’s ‘known’ me since i started high school. i’ve changed so much in that time and im glad to have this weird little record of myself throughout those changes, even if i’d probably warn my younger self away from tumblr if i could go back in time.

tl;dr i have had a mixed experience on tumblr and i have mixed feelings about that experience. no idea if anyone read any of this very long, very rambling internet memoir

i recently got a second version of the poster i got my blog title from. i chose my blog title by looking at what was hanging on the wall directly in front of me. 

my original url was gloomthkin. this was not, as you’d probably assume, an otherkin thing. i had literally no idea what otherkin was at that point. i’d just learned the word gloomth from a bill bryson book and thought it would be cool n edgy to be the child of the quality of gloom. i changed my url after i learned what otherkin was and realized everyone probably assumed something about me that wasn’t true which i hated (not bc i had an issue w otherkin, just bc i don’t like ppl thinking untrue things about me)

during my good omens days, i once sent a tumblr ask to nail guyman which, in retrospect, was kinda rude. i stand by the content but id never send an ask like that now. he replied to it privately in a way that so deeply embarrassed and shamed 15 year old me that i’ve never gotten over it. i still get nervous and embarrassed when i see anything about him or his books

You were back from your home country and were currently waiting for your husband Yoosung to pick you up from the airport. Its been 2 months since you last saw each other in person, and you were excited to see your significant other to say the least.

You looked around the exit area, trying to spot your blonde husband before hearing our name being called out behind you. A grin soon followed on your face as you ran into the direction of the voice, spotting Yoosung. You stopped in front of the man, wearing his usual lab coat, both of you trying to refrain from any physical affection in public. He helped you out with your luggage in your car, while he informed about the RFA meeting you were headed to in a few minutes.

You both get in the car, Yoosung in the drivers seat looking at you affectionately while you adjust yourself in the passengers seat. His hand moved towards your cheek, caressing it slowly and softly before moving his head forward, closing his eyes. You take the signal and reciprocate his actions before meeting his lips, moving them slowly. A kiss softly speaking 'I love you'.

No words were spoken on your way to the meeting location, you both just enjoyed each others presence.

after reaching the location, you both walked towards Seven's house. A peculiar voice began to speak "Why are you here?"

"It's us. Yoosung and MC. Open the door Luciel." Yoosung spoke.

"Ohh! College dropout and his wife! Tell me the binary of 707.."

Yoosung sweat dropped. "We have Lisa with us-" Yoosung was stopped with a clank and a door slightly swinging open towards you and two men falling out of the door.

"Where is my Lisa darling-"

"You guys bought your fur ba-" Zen stopped his sentence midway, staring at you and Yoosung. Seven followed his trance. Smirk slowly formed on their faces.

"What's with the commotion?" Jaehee stood behind both the boys, before turning the gaze down.

"Um.. is everything alright?" You asked nervously before turning your gaze towards Yoosung. Shocked was an understatement. The lipstick you applied this morning was now on his lips.

Zen

It was the night of Zen's musical. You were their backstage as his manager and girlfriend.

The show was going to be started soon, and you can practically feel his nervousness radiating off of his body. You sighed before looking around, taking a note that stage crew weren't looking, took a hold of his necklace and pulled him down, touching your lips with his. Lips moved slowly before you both pull away.

"Thank you MC. I really neede-"

"Show is starting in 30 seconds! Zen! On stage!" The director yelled in our direction. You looked over at Zen before realizing that your pink lipstick was visible on his'.

"Ze-"

"Okay. I'm off. Thanks MC!" Zen ran towards the direction of the stage. You facepalmed before heading over to the hi-tea room to see Zen's performance on the T.V. Nothing could've been done now. And yes, it was visible.

A few moments later you could hear the makeup artist going frantic in the other room. You went to the washroom to erase any evidence of mistake from your side.

Next day, you went out for a coffee date with Jaehee.

"It was you, right?" Jaehee asked.

"Huh? What do you mean?" You tilted your head sideways, showing your confusion.

"That lipstick. The pink one. On Zen." Jaehee pushed her glasses up. You could see her eyes shine just like in her emoji.

"U-um.. I-I- Yes."

"I knew it. The girls around me were going crazy, saying that it was definitely you, giggling and saying how they ship you both." Jaehee grinned.

"Y-yeah.." You blurted out, looking down with your cheeks red in embarrassment.

Jumin (route not completed yet)

You were sitting in a nice, cozy, cafe style restaurant, having lunch with Jumin and the other members of RFA. You all were having a nice time, chatting and eating away.

You were just finished with your lunch and were thinking of getting up and saying goodbye to head over to the meeting with different designers.

You get up from your seat saying, "I'll be off now." The RFA looks in your direction before they smile off and wish you luck for the meeting. You pick your bag and start heading in the direction of the door when suddenly you hear your boyfriend calling out your name.

"MC!"

You turn around in confusion and see him heading towards you. "What is it?"

"Hand me your bag for a sec." You comply. He moves his hand towards the collar of the creme blazer you were wearing, pushing it off your shoulders.

"Jumin! What are you doing?!" You question, embarrassment laced in your voice.

He shushes you and ties the sleeve of your blazer on your waist. "I'm sorry. You're a designer and this doesn't suit your aesthetics but I'll send you a change of clothes before you reach your destination." He speaks before bending down to your height and kissing you on your lip. You push him on the shoulder, breaking the kiss.

"MC catch!" You catch it immediately after Jaehee spoke, looking at your hand to see the pink wrapper.

Oh..!

Jumin smiles at you before pecking your lips and escorting you towards the door.

"Poor MC." Yoosung sighs when Jumin returned to RFA's table.

"MC's case is understandable but..." Seven trailed off .

"But what?" Jumin raises an eyebrow.

"I wonder how your lips became glossy.. was it the kimchi or.. was it MC? What do you think Zen?" Luciel questions Zen before Zen bursts out laughing, clapping his hand with Seven's.

"You guys.." Jumin resumes with his lunch, not wanting to remove your mark from his mouth.

Happy Holidays Everyone! I started making these yearly playlists in 2001 as an attempt to connect with friends in the wake of 911. It was just before the dawn of ITunes, and way before social media. We were not in touch like we are today. I burned dozens of individual cd’s one at a time, printed up customized jewel case covers and snail mailed them all out. It was an annual month-long labor of love. Over the past few years, streaming music has made it much easier and faster to compile and distribute, and frankly much more fun. I still look forward to putting the playlist and blog together and sharing it with all of you. Particularly this year as it gives me a chance to connect with so many friends I haven’t seen in quite some time. It was a tremendously challenging year for all of us. I was grateful to have had my family here in LA the entire time, we remain healthy and well. The west coast Herzogs know just how lucky we have been. The next year will not be without its own challenges, but I'm hopeful we are able to move past this pandemic and the exhausting events of the past 4. More than that, I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in 2021. Until then, be safe, be well, and be good to one another. Enjoy the music.

Khruangbin - Time (You And I) Don’t ask me to pronounce the name of this eclectic trio from Texas, but this dubby disco tune had me returning to its chilled out groove often during the last few decidedly “un-chill” months. Dreamy and funky, the groove takes me back to NYC’s early 80′s club scene and Ze Records releases from the likes of Kid Creole and Coati Mundi.

Bill Withers (1938-2020)- Use Me The legendary Bill Withers left the playing field at the top of his game in the early 80′s, hardly heard from again. And while he didn't pass from Covid, his healing pop hymn Lean On Me seemed to be everywhere as people found music to help them cope with the challenges of the pandemic. Withers left behind a legendary and enduring group of hit songs that moved easily from soul to folk to pop, not to mention the subtle rolling funk of this one.

Black Pumas- Fire Strong debut from an unlikely Austin duo that garnerd both buzz and grammy nods. The critics are calling it “psychedelic soul”. Not quite sure that nails it, but like the artists coming up next, they’re carving out new ground while drawing inspiration from classic sources.

Low Cut Connie_ Private Lives Philly’s Low Cut Connie are back at it with a double album that plays like the soundtrack to a boozy night at your favorite bar. Sweaty, funky and not a little bit messy. If Peter Wolf and Bruce had a kid it would be this blue eyed soul boy. Adam Weiner grew up in the shadow of the Jersey shore and can't help but have a bit of that E Street hustle.

Willie Nile- New York at Night One of New York’s beloved adopted  son’s dropped this love letter right into the jaws of a battered metropolis driven to its knees by the pandemic. It was heartbreaking to listen as the “city that never sleeps” came to a full stop. Somehow I still found myself coming back to it, imagining night’s ahead, when NYC is back on its feet and I’m roaming its streets. Looking for music, a beer, or maybe just a slice, and fueled by the irreplaceable energy and promise of the greatest city on earth.

The Long Ryders- Down to The Well Americana pioneers the Long Ryders reunited last year for a surprisingly solid album. This single sounds like it could have been recorded during their 80′s heyday featuring their trademark Byrds like jangle and harmonies, but the lyrics mark this song as unmistakably 2020.

The Speedways- Kisses Are History UK power pop outfit reach back to the the 60′s on this sweet slice of retro pop perfection.

Billie Joe Armstrong- That Thing You Do

In the early days of the pandemic we had all our kids (+ a significant other) at our house for a few months. It worked out great and we were luckier than most. The biggest issue was keeping enough food, weed and wine around.  There were some great nights with amazing meals, followed by gathering around the TV together. We re-watched The Sopranos, binged Billy On The Street, and revisited some of our favorite movies. One night we went back to a old family favorite, Tom Hanks’ underrated love letter to the one hit wonders of the post Beatles era, That Thing You Do!  I’ve seen the movie several times and it never fails to please. A true feel good film and a perfect Kodak snapshot capturing a simpler time in American pop culture. 

While we watch the unlikely chart topper’s The Oneders  fizzle as fast as they rose to fame, its not really the point. The movie is really an old fashioned love story. Playing like a perfect hit song you can listen to over and over, full of both hooks and heart. I always thought the title track, written by Fountains Of Wayne leader Adam Schlesinger  (who we lost to Covid), brilliantly captured the British Invasion sound every group wanted after The Beatles stormed America. Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong must agree. During the pandemic he cut an album’s worth of cool covers including a faithful version of this one.

Gerard Way (W/Judith Hill - Here Comes the End A tale of discovering music in 2020:  Heard this on a Netflix trailer for the series The Umbrella Factory. Turns out it is performed by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) who also writes the comic book the series is based on. (got all that?) He’s joined on this searing garage/psych rave up by the talented and versatile Judith Hill doing her best Merry Clayton.

Hinds- Spanish Bombs I’ve been following this Madrid based, all female outfit of punky garage rockers for a few years now. I think they are pretty great. This track, recorded for a Joe Strummer tribute bursts with an unbridled joy the stone faced and politically minded Clash could never muster. I bet Joe would love it though

The Secret Sisters- Hand Over My Heart Have enjoyed their harmonies for some time now. This one gives me vague Wilson Phillips vibes and I don’t really mind. 

Tame Impala- Breathe Deeper I know I’m supposed to like this guy, all the cool kids do, I’ve even seen the band at Coachella. Over the years very little of the music has stuck to me, but the pandemic offered a bit more free time to dig into this funky dubby, chilled out jam, and it stuck with me. Not to mention that 2020 was all about deep breaths.

Ledisi (feat.Corey Henry)- What Kind of Love Is That Ledisi is back with some slinky, sultry R&B and jazzy vocals

Dinner Party- FreezeTag An R&B/Jazz collective featuring Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, 9th Wonder and Kamasi Washington use sweet soul on heartbreaking and all too familiar tale..

Toots and The Maytals- Time Tough  I’ve written an awful lot about my love for Reggae over the years. Right after Bob Marley kicked the door down for me, Toots showed me around the house. Ska, rock steady, and roots. He was true reggae royalty and sadly we lost him to Covid, just after he released what would be his last album. Check my Toots tribute blog and playlist.

Mungo’s Hi Fi- The Beat Goes SKA! These clever UK roots reggae collective never fail to surprise. This kitschy Sonny & Cher cover managed to make me smile every time I heard it. No mean feat in 2020

Stone Foundation (feat. Durand Jones)- Hold on To Love Frequent collaborators with Paul Weller  (he appears on a track on the album), Stone Foundation are back with another batch of their UK soul revival stylings. This one features Durand Jones ( of Durand Jones & The Indications) on vocals and some great reggae style horns at the top.

The Pretenders- You Can’t Hurt A Fool Can’t resist a good torch song, especially sung by the smokey voiced Chrissie Hynde. Was kind of shocked at how many good songs were on this album.

Shelby Lynne_ Don’t Even Believe in Love Sultry country soul and one of her strongest albums in awhile.

Jaime Wyatt- Neon Cross Outlaw country has a new bad girl. And in case you didn’t think she was serious, she enlisted producer Shooter Jennings (and his mom Jessi Colter on one track) to help make her point. 

Daniel Donato- Justice 25 year old guitar prodigy call his music “cosmic country”.  Ok, now I’m listening. You should be too.

The Jayhawks- This Forgotten Town 30 plus + after their debut this Twin Cities alt country group led by founding member Gary Louris continue to deliver. They find their inner Neil Young on this one.

Lucero- Time To Go Home God I wish I was in a bar right now listening to this, even if I might be crying in my beer.

John Prine (1946 -2020)- Lake Marie We lost so many this year, but this one really stung. A true American songwriting treasure, who was still making great music against all odds right up to his untimely passing. His songs are known for their simplicity, and economy of words. but this one goes against the grain. I’m still not exactly certain what it’s about. Sorrowful and haunting, yet somehow uplifting and redemptive. I heard him perform it live here in Los Angeles a just over a year ago and it has stuck in my head ever since. There is surely a place in heaven for the great John Prine.  He sang about it on his final studio album in 2018. Ironically it became the last song on his last record.

THE FLIGHT RISK

Maverick Braxton, as you might see, is an enigma—or rather, has evolved into one, slowly: a transformation that begun with his first breath. In his early years, the stage had been set for him, line by line. Act One: attend prep schools, excel in classes. Act Two: attend Covington, take center stage—you know, all of the things his older brother, Richard had accomplished with ease, just one year prior to all of his expectations. It was simple, really: a blueprint laid out ahead of him, with little to nothing in his way.

The only problem was that Maverick didn’t exactly see the point in choosing that path, that stage, that story. To him, it wasn’t challenging.

That, and the fact that the life laid out in front of him offered him absolutely nothing.

A series of banal expectations, unfair comparisons, and heartbreaking betrayals, and the traditional life of the Braxton child was thrown out the window—at least, in his brain, it was. See, Maverick Braxton, while independent, coy, and arrogant, isn’t stupid. He knows if he pleases his parents just enough, they’ll still distribute his trust fund and still bail him out of legal trouble when he inevitably tiptoes too far down the delicate line between ambition and rebellion. Perhaps it’s a bit selfish, but what does he owe to a family who paid him no attention, who never asked of his well-being, his own ambitions, his personal dreams?

He’s the kind of person to drive down the highway, windows rolled all the way down, cigarette lit—not because he necessarily likes the taste of nicotine, but because he likes the way the smoke creates clouds that obscure reality. He’ll surprise you in class when he interjects with a sarcastic but surprisingly salient point before throwing up his hood and retreating to the back corner for the rest of class. He’s the kind of person to start reading a book, flipping incessantly through the pages, both impatient by the pace of the plot, yet put it down before he reaches the final pages because he doesn’t want to be disappointed by the ending. He’s the kind of artist who rarely finishes a sketch, the writer who is never satisfied by a poem—for fear, of course, by deep-rooted insecurities that nothing that he will ever do will be enough.

A once-broken heart had taken time to mend, even though it seems ice-cold and whole from the outside. It’s why he has commitment issues: he doesn’t want to be burned again. He plays off his flirtatious bit as a personality trait, someone who is bored by the prospect of being tied down—and yet those who share his bed might consider him Covington’s most surprisingly deep pillow-talker.

An enigma, you see—one who doesn’t stick around long enough for anyone to truly understand, truly a Flight Risk.

BIOGRAPHY:

Maverick was born the second of three children to the Braxton family—and as per usual with the Braxton children, he was born into a life filled to the absolute brim of expectation.

His father, a playwright, his mother, an actress. His brother, a theatre prodigy—what part did that leave him to play? The assumed expectations were to follow in his mother and brothers’ footsteps and take center stage; he excelled, for a while, but Maverick always felt lost.

Neighbors and family friends would always ask if he had measured up, in each and every shape and form: it was like the entire universe had a scoreboard with their names titling each section, and Maverick was always playing catch-up, never knowing where the finish line was.

For a while, he stuck to the script that was given to him: study, succeed, repeat. He tried to understand the ins and outs of his father’s work, of masterful acting techniques, trying to make a large enough splash to where his family would even notice the work he put into his life. Surprise: it didn’t.

It took him seventeen years to truly understand that his role in life was not exactly the story his parents had laid out for him, but rather, his sibling, instead.

Downcast emotions transformed quickly into cynicism. What used to make him feel sad now fueled a blue fire within Maverick’s chest, one that felt wronged by the system he was placed in: a complete first-world problem, but it was then and there when he decided to take advantage of his situation, given that he had spent his entire life dedicated to a part he wouldn’t play.

Hypocritical as he was, he still enjoyed the fruits of his parents’ work, cashing the unlimited checks with his name on them, as if it was some sort of sick version of love.

One piece of recognition that Maverick finally earned was an acceptance to Covington—and even that couldn’t be tainted by his brother’s success or his legacy status.

At Covington, Maverick has both lost and found his footing, multiple times. He’s quit acting, quit studying theater, in favor of a topic that stimulates his brain more than reading lines and

PERSONALITY:

Maverick Braxton is certainly a paradox. He’s charismatic, funny, and has a witty sense of humor –– and is generally appreciated by his peers because he’s able to move conversation and discussion without making topics seem dry.

Despite his apparent inferiority to his sibling, the Braxton family still breeds the cream of the crop. He’s certainly a bit arrogant sometimes, given that he’s intelligent, innovative, and clever, and wants to be recognized for it –– however, even if he might not show it on the outside, he appreciates a good challenger. He thinks it keeps his wit sharp, and of course, his ego would never show it, but he does appreciate learning from people. After all, his passion in philosophy, his current area of study, makes him certainly interested in how the world works.

Those who happen to get to know Maverick outside of the surface-level stuff, outside the initial cockiness and flirtatious front he puts on will know that he’s actually quite thoughtful. His lonely childhood has made him extremely loyal to those who have shown him similar trust and friendship –– he would never turn his back on them.

He asks probing questions, is a good listener –– perhaps because he’s interested in human decision making, but is also because he doesn’t quite know what it’s like to be loved unconditionally –– though he wants to.

Deep down, what almost no one knows is that he’s really quite soft. He passes his curiosity off as wanting to understand people, when really it’s a mechanism for hoping someone asks him questions in return, to give him the time of day he wished his parents ( and the rest of the goddamned universe ) had given him.

Despite his theatre prowess, he isn’t actually a particularly good liar. Those who spend enough time around him can hear his tone of voice incline slightly and see him scratch his brow.

AESTHETICS:

coffee-stained mugs, walking with headphones in but nothing playing, untied shoelaces, black hoodies, a cheeky smirk, small books in his back pocket, writing in the margins, unfinished poems, quoting old authors on a daily basis, incessant eye-rolling, pen ink stains, an unmade bed, mismatched socks, floral ties, empty bottles of liquor, rose thorn pricks, old worn poetry books, polished dress shoes, calloused fingers, unlit cigarettes between teeth.

HEADCANONS:

Funnily enough, Maverick’s name means ‘independent, a noncomformist’, which is exactly the path that he has taken to stray away from his family’s expectations.

He does have one strong connection to his family, though: his grandmother, on his father’s side. She understands the pressure he undergoes, who saw the pressure Maverick’s father endured to obtain the success he has. She is one of the only reasons that Maverick has not just jetted off to take on his own adventure. He loves her dearly, and wishes that her empathy and wisdom would rub off on the rest of his family.

Maverick has some form of synesthesia, which allows him to remember a lot more than the average person. He associates colors, smells, sounds, to words –– and allows him to efficiently study any subjects he doesn’t have immediate passion for.

In the privacy of his own bedroom, he sometimes writes poetry and sketches his thoughts and muses –– when he knows he’s in complete privacy. Faces and features that appear in his sketchbooks are often those he’s thinking of often, those who intrigue him. He’s actually quite good a sketching, maybe not quite as good at writing poetry.

His room is spotless –– evidence that he is a bit of a control freak sometimes. It shows that during his adolescence, he reveled in the parts of his life that he could control and perfect.

tw drugs. He more than dabbles in drug use, smoking marijuana maybe every other day, while partaking in harder drugs like cocaine and adderall and others probably once a week. He feels like he’s in control of his use, but it may start to get the best of him. end tw.

Maverick is left-handed. He hates that he gets pen ink stains when he draws, writes poetry, takes notes. His left palm is probably perennially covered with ink.

Though he’s often wearing headphones ( airpods, of course, the nerve of this rich kid ), half the time, nothing’s playing. Sometimes he forgets to press play on his phone, sometimes he purposely likes listening to decision-making and conversations of strangers. it lets him think about the nature of mankind.

Maverick’s favorite philosopher is Albert Camus, known for his work that heavily developed the idea of absurdism ( much to do with the meaning of life, and human inability to discern an answer ).

Maverick’s preferred method of transportation is his skateboard. he loved it first because his parents hated it: pushing himself around on a board like that would get him injured—besides, why not just take the car to school, the driver had been paid for anyway? It was his first taste of rebellion. Now at Covington, where skateboarding is far more efficient than walking across campus, it comes in handy when he sees someone he’d rather not stop and chat to.

Maverick could die with a poetry book nestled on his chest—it’s the one thing he got out of the impressive book collection his family owned. There was something daunting and beautiful about the way poems would transform metaphors into something fantastical, like the emotions were clearly there, but the words were skirting the issue. Kind of like how his parents would never really tell him they loved him.

Maverick often has headphones in when he walks to class. not particularly because he’s actually listening to music or a podcast, but rather because he’d just … rather not be bothered to stop and talk to people.

Maverick loves to draw. He’s mostly self-taught, with a bit of mentorship from his high school art teacher. Evidenced by the rest of his fleeting personality, he rarely finishes a sketch or painting. He claims he never has time to finish them, but the number of crumbled-up, half-finished sketches in his trash bin might say otherwise.

It wouldn’t be easy to make Maverick feel like even more of a disappointment than he already had with his parents, his family—but your muse proved this feeling wrong. He loved them, more than he’d ever loved anything before. In the midst of confusion about where he belonged, he felt safe with your muse; he’d do anything for them. Things ended, he felt betrayed ( though the break-up could have easily been due to a fault of his ), and the split made him the one who now struggles fully with commitment. He doesn’t want to have his heart broken again. See: this entire pinterest board.

Those who go through similar childhood traumas are often able to understand each other –– that was how it worked with Maverick and your muse, at least. They’re thick as thieves — and have likely seen the ups and downs of Maverick’s life in real time.

* CHILDHOOD FRIENDS / OPEN.

Self explanatory—and also probably knows about the pressures the Braxton family imposes on their children.

* EX-FRIENDS / OPEN.

Friends who were close, close no longer. Maverick’s a real piece of work, and an asshole, too—there are myriad possibilities for why Maverick could have pushed them away. He wouldn’t openly admit that he misses being around your muse, but he certainly would feel a bit of guilt given that they’re no longer the closest of friends.

* MOMENT OF WEAKNESS / OPEN.

Your muse, in whatever unfortunate setting, saw a glimpse of Maverick’s soft side that hardly ever makes an appearance. He’s not going to let them tell the world about his vulnerabilities, though. Not a chance.

Maverick is sarcastic, cold, and sometimes emotionless. It’s not surprising that not everyone gets along with the middle Braxton. The possibilities are endless—throw in some sexual tension and I’d actually fall at ur feet.

Your muse, at one point, probably knew Maverick better than everyone else at Covington. They overheard some of his phone calls with his parents, saw his notes for how he was to achieve his life goals, heard him crying in the middle of the night when he thought your muse was asleep. They could be extremely close now, as in one of the few people Maverick opens up to, or could be distant friends who know about one anothers’ struggles. The possibilities are endless, tbh.

Do you listen to music (or tv shows/films/anything else) when drawing?

🎤 yup! usually music~ mostly pop 🥁 usually, i am either listening to music or rewatching my favorite tv shows while i work. 🎷 I listen to music or watch videos while I draw, usually for background noises but when it comes to music I like it to listen to certain genres and themes to keep my mind at a creative mode. 🎺 I'm big into music, I believe that it can influence how and what I come up with. A lot of the times I will have a specific playlist for a piece just so I can keep a consistent mood through out a piece. If I want to have a neutral setting while I work, I usually just throw on a murder mystery documentary and get to it. 🎸 All the time! It helps me focus and relax at the same time. Sometimes a song can inspire me to draw through art block as well. My genre of music can go from pop to hardcore rock, then back to instrumental and indie, in many different languages as well. 🎻 I do! It's helpful background noise.

What’s your favorite music artist/band? If you could ask your favorite band/music artist one question, what would it be?

🎤 A Crow is White has been a favorite for a while now~ i really love their whispery vocal style~ 🥁 i would simply ask stevie nicks for her best witch tips. 🎺 This may be unbelievable, but I don't have one particular absolute favorite artist/band. I love so many different types of music it is so hard to pick one favorite. I guess if I really had to pick *one* I would pick Ella Fitzgerald. I would love to ask her what it was like to be a woman of color making a living as a jazz artist in the era that she lived. 🎸 I have too many to list, but if I could ask one question to my favorite musician, then I would want to know what inspired them to make a song. 🎻 Yoko Shimomura! I wonder how she always seems to make dynamic music

Do you play an instrument? If not would you like to play one? Which one?

🎤 nope but i've been interested in picking up bass~   🥁 i have been teaching myself the ukulele the last couple years! my favorite songs to play are “f*ck was i” by jenny owens young and “us” by regina spektor. 🎷 I don't play any sadly haha 🎺 Sadly, I am not able to play any instrument. I just completely skipped that in school. I think I would really love to play the guitar or banjo. The guitar because it is an instrument thats sound really excites me in music. And the banjo because it is notoriously hard to play, so it would be cool to say I could. Maybe even a hurry-gurdy. Who knows. 🎸 I used to play the electric piano back when I was young, but not anymore. If I wanted to learn an instrument again, I would like to play an electric guitar because of guitar hero. [LOL] 🎻 I actually played multiple instruments in middle school. They were all percussion instruments!

What do you expect from this zine?

🎤 i'm really curious to see the variety of music~ Maybe i'll find a new favorite band! 🥁 i expect to hear a lot of cool music that i have never heard before! and also push myself to work outside of my comfort zone. 🎷 The wonderful pieces everyone will be making with the songs they have chosen and even listening to some of the songs they had picked! 🎺 Just to have a whole lot of fun and discover some new music. Maybe even make some new friends in the art world. 🎸 I am excited to see how everyone interprets their favorite songs through their own means. I also thank you for letting me be a part of it as well. I have been recently rewatching with you and can i just say I love your gifs. And I wonder if you know of any drama that has good boi™️ like yu huai lol. I tried watching other school dramas but it just don’t catch my eyes much.

Hi there! First off, sorry for the late reply. I actually had to sit down and write a list before I attempt to answer your question, which is why this q&a is only now being answered lol. If I recall correctly, I only did a couple of gifsets for With You, but still thank you for loving them ^^

And boy, a drama with good school boy like Yu Huai?? That kind of stumped me lol. The kind of male protagonist that’s good from beginning to end, not the kind that’s an asshole in the beginning only to be sweet to the female counter-part later when he “falls in love” with her, right? Or are you talking about good boy, in the sense that he’s studious? If it’s the latter, then there’s no problem with that because in these youth dramas all the male protagonists are some kind of geniuses lol. Even though I enjoy youth drama, I don’t know if I’ve seen enough to give you a good among to start off with. So here’s my attempt to give you some I’ve seen that you might like, and I will also give you some that I’ve heard good things about, but have yet to watch. And you did mentioned you’ve seen other school dramas, so some of these you might have already watched. Just a fyi ^^

I guess I’ll start off with one that’s closely related to With You in terms of: novelist, setting, and theme - My Huckleberry Friends. I believe this one is from the same author that wrote the With You novel, and the story is based in the same school and time, but the leads here are from a different class than Yu Huai and Geng Geng. I heard a lot of good things about this drama, and since you like With You so much, you might like this one too ^^.

My Mr. Mermaid, Tang Yi Bai, is honestly one of my favorite male protagonist. I don’t think I can find a sweeter guy than him in dramaland.

This one might be the most famous/well-known one, Love O2O, Xiao Nai. I mean he’s the perfect male protagonist. The End.

My most recent obsession, Put Your Head On My Shoulder, Gu Wei Yi. He’s that cute, nerdy weirdo that is also so sweet in his own unique way. He is love ♡. I can’t tell you how perfect but yet so imperfect he is hahaha. The imperfection is him TRYING to be better and prefect, which somehow makes him so much more charming and adorable.

Le Coup de Foudre, Yan Mo. This one is currently airing and I’m enjoying it a lot more than I would’ve thought. Yan Mo is an interesting character. He’s certainly a good studious individual being one of the top student in his class/grade. He seems cold and almost emotionless but he’s so funny in this stoic way. He’s in the weird category, but weird in a good and cute way lol.

A very underrated drama that I loved, Where the Lost Ones Go, Xiang Ze Yi. He’s that playful, nice guy type. Also quite romantic too. I mean he’s an artist so that’s a given lol. This drama however, goes from super fluffy and light to super dark and gloomy. Just prepare a box of tissue next to you.

Another one I’ve heard is good is When We Were Young. I can’t give you much info on this one since I haven’t seen it myself, but those who have seen it has mentioned good things about it. Male protagonist, from what I remember from the trailer seems to be a nice, out-going individual.

Suddenly This Summer is one that a lot of people talked about when it first aired. I don’t know the overall content of the drama but I remember the story is somewhat similar to With You.

A Love So Beautiful, Jiang Chen. Okay, Jiang Chen can be such a jerk at times but when he’s sweet, he’s really sweet. That’s why I’m including him here. He’s that character that you hate but love.

Salute to My Youth, Lan Tian Ye. I haven’t seen this one in full because there’s honestly no subs available out there :( But Lan Tian Ye is in the same category as Jiang Chen, maybe a little less hateful. One thing I like about him is that he’s quite manly. He knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to go after it. Also the second male lead is so sweet here, you might get major second lead syndrome.  

Not sure if you’re looking for other countries content too, but here’s some extras that I think you might like.

Page Turner: This is a short mini drama (only three episodes). It was short but so good.

Reply 1997: The first drama of the very famous Reply series in Korea. The only one that I can say I like from beginning to end.

Sassy Go Go/Cheer Up: I personally don’t think Korean make good youth drama but this one is one that I really liked.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo: This one is a favorite among the international fans. I haven’t seen it, but people raves about it. It’s a campus love story where friends become lovers.

The U-Princes Series: This is a youth drama series from Thailand and they have some cute ones that you might like if you’re interested in trying out Thai drama.

From Me to You/Kimi ni Todoke: This is one of my all time favorite movies. Male protagonist, Shouta, is just the sweetest guy ever. Played by the Miura Haruma ♡ ♡ ♡ This is a movie but I think of Shouta when it comes to ���good boy” hahaha.

Okay that’s it! At least that’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Of course, there are many many more out there that I have not yet heard or seen, so this is my own little list. I tried to stay within your given request of “good boy” male character in youth/school related drama, so hopefully you’ll find one of these to your liking.

hey since u know about manga.. do you hace a manga recommendation? preferably shoujo?

excluding ao n/o flag bc i’ve yelled about it at length lMAO, and keeping in mind that i don’t actually read very much shoujo at all (if any?? i honestly don’t know what shimanami was classed as) so most of this list is technically shonen bc of the magazines that they were published in. also i haven’t actually read very much manga so there’s stuff i’ve heard is good that is not on this list bc i am terrible at actually reading anything loldoukyuusei: technically bl, but it’s a cute little high school love story thing. also v pretty. not much to say about it tbh but i like it shimanami tasogare: in the same vein as anf, probably THE lgbtq+ (general lgbtq+, there are those out there that are more focused on specific identities but this one covers literally everything) manga. pretty as hell, and gets very into the good and painful parts of being lgbtq in japan. author is also x-gender (the nonbinary-equivalent term used in japan) and aroace so they know what they’re talking about!! it’s good shit though the ending is unfortunately a bit abrupt since i think it got cancelled :(

tetsugaku letra: another one of those growing up stories, kid trades his basketball shoes for flamenco shoes and makes friends along the way. hard to describe this one tbh but it’s real pretty and and only 6 vols so it’s easy to read in an afternoon!

kanojo ni naritai kimi to boku: only one on this list that’s actually still ongoing (and it’s only like 20 chapters rn so it’s not particularly long yet), about a girl who’s been in love w her childhood best friend since they were kids and said childhood best friend being a trans girl trying to transition in high school and all the shit that entails. can’t say much about it yet bc, again, it’s not that long, but probably worth keeping up with!

a silent voice/koe no katachi: holy fuck. i don’t even know how to put into words why i love this manga so much but it just. damn. goddamn. it’s so real and honest about the trauma of childhood bullying and goes so in depth (in a SUPER sympathetic way) w depression and suicidality stuff and. god. god!!! i love knk so much. beck (called beck: mongolian chop squad in the us because of musical artist beck existing): this one is long as fuck (30+ volumes??) and honestly has kinda meh art until like halfway through, but it’s a really really interesting look into the rise of a band from formation, to playing their first gig, to getting signed to a label, etc. etc. i’m not a musician in any sense of the word but a lot of music people i know really love it bc it really does go into detail w everything that being a musician entails

boku dake ga inai machi: reccing the manga mildly over the anime even though i think you should probably watch the anime first lol. mid-20′s mangaka tries to solve a murder mystery that’s haunted him since he was a kid. there is so much more to it than that but if i try to talk about it at ALL i will spoil it so like. just trust me on that one it’s fuckin good. if you’re a ze fan in particular you will love this

So I played the “younger guy” route first to get him over with. OP has a IRL circumstance where one year younger IRL guys have told them “so...you like younger guys?” and gets triggered when they see it in otoge  He’s like a flirty type and I guess it was cute to see him act so confidant even though he’s younger than MC chan. Although, gotta say it was really annoying for MC chan to go “oh swoon he’s so kakkoi ヽ( ＞///＜)ノ” every 5 minutes bc like listen this guy would totally be making tik tok thirst traps like he is 17 after all.

Isora makes you a starberry cake and yr like sowwy no I dun leik strawberries bc idk why :/ and decline.

You can’t move and he inches forward towards you until your yan bf comes to your aid and grabs and smashes the killers head into the concrete over and over and over and over while saying I’ll never forgive you for hurting ichika until the killers head is a bloody mess and oh my god this was so insane and I loved it

anyway you limp out and have a flashback that isora and ichika knew each other when they were young. Isora cooked something for ichika with strawberries that were like crazy hella rancid and she got rushed to the hospital (!?) and that’s why she hates strawberries 🍓 

Anyway it ends with him in the hospital recovering and it's really funny bc he’s like “can we go out ilu and I won’t put you in a cage again :)” and Ichika is like “Oh Isora u so silly :)”

Final Isora Thoughts

Okay I seriously enjoyed the latter half of this route immensely it felt INSANE I totally wasn’t expecting this. I was like o lol time 4 babey and THIS ENDED UP BEING LIKE MY FAVE LOL

Pro Marvel pracovala na titulech Doctor Strange a Amazing Spider-man. Spolu s Kelly Sue DeConnick tvoří titul pod názvem Pretty Deadly. V současné době spolupracuje s malajsijskou umělkyní Hwei Lim na pokračujicím titulu Mirror, který je popisován jako mysteriózní a mytologický s krásnou lehkou kresbou vodovými barvami.

CZ: Znáte Bechdel test? Byl pojmenován právě po ni. Využívá kreslených karikatur k vyprávění často autobiografického příběhu. Její nejznámější dílo vycházejicí v letech 1983-2008 se jmenuje Dykes to Watch Out For a soustřeďuje pozornost na přehlížené lesbické postavy v popkultuře. Proslavila se v roce 2006 komiksovým memoárem Fun House, který byl uveden i jako muzikál a získal cenu Tony (muzikálový “oskar”) jako nejlepší muzikál roku 2015. Ve svých dílech si dává za cíl představit ženy, co nejvěrohodnějí, a to bez ohledu na jejich sexualitu nebo i gendrovou shodu, jak je tomu u samotné Bechdel, která se neidentifikuje žádným konkrétním pohlavím. 

EN: Have you heard of the Bechdel test? I bet you did and now you know it was named after Alison. She’s a cartoonist who tells her autobiographic stories. The most prominent one would be the long-running cartoon Dykes to Watch Out For that was published from 1983 and 2008 focusing on lesbian characters and their everyday lives. V pěti letech vyhrála talentovou soutěž pořádanou Walt Disney a již ve svých 12 vytvořila první komiksovou knihu. Po dokončení umělecké univerzity se dostala ke spolupráci se světoznámými vydavatelstvími jako jsou Image, DC a Marvel. Pracovala na mnoha dílech, která všichní známe a tolik milujeme. Colleen je právě tou druhou již zmíněnou oceněnou komiksovou kreslířkou a zároveň autorkou. Takové ženy jsou v žebříčku nejlepších 50 jen dvě. Za svou kariéru často spolupracovala i přímo se Stanem Lee.

Je držitelkou mnohá ocenění včetně ceny Eisner a u populárních komiksů jste si jeji práce mohli určitě všimnout u série DC Bombshells.

Časem však poslala své portfólie do Marvel a DC na posouzení a získala práci u Marvelu, kde dostala na starost X-factor. Netrvalo dlouho a Emanuela se stala jednou z nejžádanějších kreslířek na komiksové scéně. Dnes kreslí stále vycházející sérii Supergirl: Rebirth.
