A Dream Come True

This post is part of my series on the life of Joseph.

Looking at one another

When Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” - Genesis 42:1 NKJV

Genesis 42 picks up where Genesis 41 left off.

56 The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt. 57 So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all lands. - Genesis 41:56-57 NKJV

The famine was not limited to Egypt, and God was using Joseph to save many lives. Joseph’s elevated position was not simply a reward for Joseph because he had been obedient, it was a responsibility to be a blessing to those impacted by the famine. (See Genesis 45:7,27; 50:20)

Jacob becomes aware that there is grain and in a very fatherly and caring way asks his sons, “Why are you standing around staring at each other for? You are all grown men, do I have to spell everything out for you? What will you do when I am dead and gone? Can’t you take the initiative on your own? When I was your age I was out and living on my own without anyone having to tell me what to do…”

Okay, maybe I added a few extra lines but I got the Idea that Jaco was not too impressed with the performance of his boys. On a more serious note, this verse does demonstrate that Jacob is very much the patriarch and in charge of his household. Things are not done without his say-so.

A matter of life or death

2 And he said, “Indeed I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may live and not die.” - Genesis 42:2 NKJV

Jacob is not sending his sons on vacation. The children of Israel are not going to Egypt to study the local architecture. They are going to Egypt because unless they purchase grain they will die. The situation is dire and there are no other options.

10 brothers?

3 So Joseph’s ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “Lest some calamity befall him.” 5 And the sons of Israel went to buy grain among those who journeyed, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

6 Now Joseph was governor over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed down before him with their faces to the earth. - Genesis 42:3-6 NKJV

The sons of Jacob, or the children of Israel are identified as Joseph’s brothers. In this story, the important factor is not so much the relationship of the (grown) children to their father but rather their relationship to Joseph, their brother. What will have the greatest impact in this story is how the brothers relate to their brother and how their brother Joseph will relate to them.

The mention of 10 brothers demonstrates the threat to the children of Israel. We know that there are 12 tribes of Israel. But because of favoritism, jealousy, deceit, and fear, there are only 10 brothers traveling. The children of Israel are threatened by the recent turn of events. As we will witness there is guilt and lack of trust. Dishonesty and jealousy can ruin any family. As the family collapses the world suffers.

The text reminds us that Joseph was governor over the land and was in charge of selling the grain. Joseph’s brothers bow down with their faces to the earth when they approach him, having no idea they are bowing down to their younger brother.

A Dream Fulfilled

7 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he acted as a stranger to them and spoke roughly to them. Then he said to them, “Where do you come from?”

And they said, “From the land of Canaan to buy food.”

8 So Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. 9 Then Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed about them, and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land!” - Genesis 42:7-9 NKJV

Joseph recognizes his brothers and remembers the dream he had as a child (Genesis 37:5-8 I have a whole blog on this entitled Dysfunctional Family)

7 There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”

8 And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. - Genesis 37:7-8 NKJV

This dream had just been fulfilled. Joseph’s brothers were there bowing down to him and he remembered the dream. But he did not let them know who he was. There are several reasons as to why his brothers did not recognize Joseph. He had been younger and therefore changed more over the past few years. Because of his position of authority over all of Egypt and the sale of the grain, they would not have expected their little brother to have such a position. Also, Joseph is dressed in Egyptian style and like has his head shaved (Genesis 41:14).

Joseph speaks harshly to them. After all, they had thrown him down a pit and sold him as a slave. Joseph had suffered for over a decade because of his brothers. Accusing them of being spies makes sense. Canaan/Syria and Egypt often experienced tense relations and hungry armies make for dangerous and desperate enemies. (Andrews University. Oversharing

12 But he said to them, “No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land.”

13 And they said, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and in fact, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no more.” - Genesis 42:12-13 NKJV

Joseph sticks to his accusation that his brothers are spies who came to see the “exposed parts” of the land. The brothers, understandably, become very scared and begin to share details about their family trying to convince this Egyptian officer (Joseph) that they are not spies. As they share Joseph learns that his father is alive and so is his brother Benjamin.

Prison Time

14 But Joseph said to them, “It is as I spoke to you, saying, ‘You are spies!’ 15 In this manner you shall be tested: By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here. 16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother; and you shall be kept in prison, that your words may be tested to see whether there is any truth in you; or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies!” 17 So he put them all together in prison three days. - Genesis 42:14-17 NKJV

Joseph decides to keep all his brothers in prison and allow one to go and get the younger brother to prove that they are not spies and that their story is true. Joseph placed his 10 brothers in prison for three days. Three days is a significant period of time in the Bible. The third day often describes a decisive moment in biblical stories. (Genesis 22:4; 31:22; 34:25; Exodus 19:11; Judges 20:30; Esther 5:1; Jonah 1:17; Matthew 16:21; Mark 9:31; Luke 9:22; etc.)

Joseph gives his brothers three days to fight and argue over who will get to go get their younger brother and break the terrible news to their father. We are not told of anyone volunteering or any details regarding the three days the brothers spend in prison. Joseph’s test accomplishes several tasks at once. First, it reveals if his brothers are being honest regarding their father and younger brother. Second, the test guarantees the safety of his brother Benjamin. The brothers must bring Benjamin safely otherwise they will all suffer greatly. Third, the test causes the brothers to reflect on their past behavior and change. Fourth, the test reveals the current condition of their hearts.

Change of Plans

18 Then Joseph said to them the third day, “Do this and live, for I fear God: 19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined to your prison house; but you, go and carry grain for the famine of your houses. 20 And bring your youngest brother to me; so your words will be verified, and you shall not die.”

And they did so. - Genesis 42:18-20 NKJV

Joseph changes his mind after three days and asks for one brother to stay. Once again we are not given details but it could be that God is also working on Joseph’s heart and a healing process is taking place. Perhaps Joseph’s heart was softened. Maybe Joseph considered the danger of one brother traveling alone and how this might actually place Benjamin’s life in danger. Also, what about his father and Benjamin and the entire household? They need food. Joseph does not want his family to have to suffer because of the wickedness his brothers performed all those years ago.

There is debate among biblical scholars regarding Joseph’s statement that he fears God.

Commentators dispute the precise intention of this phrase by Joseph. The expressions “fear God” and “fear the Lord” describe someone who worships the Lord (e.g., Deut 25:18; Josh 22:25; 1 Kgs 18:3; Eccl 12:13), but here the expression probably is equivalent to “a God-fearer” (yirʾat ʾĕlōhîm), referring to a person’s moral conduct (cf. comments on 20:11; 22:12). This is someone who does not oppress a weaker person (e.g., Lev 19:14; Deut 25:18). Also this description by Joseph occurs for those outside the community of Israel (e.g., Job 1:1, 8–9). Yet the author of chaps. 42–44 constructs much of what is said and done between Joseph and the brothers to convey a double meaning. The implication one might draw from Joseph’s protestation is that he was a person of integrity and the brothers were not. That the brothers immediately acknowledged their sin suggests strongly that they recognized the deeper meaning of his challenge to their integrity. From their perspective, the Egyptian lord presumably did not know their family secret, but in the ears of their conscience his words were the judgment of God against them. Moreover, by his assertion “I fear God,” another implication was that even this foreign lord acted with more fidelity than they had toward their own family. - K. A. Guilty Conscience

21 Then they said to one another, “We are truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not hear; therefore this distress has come upon us.”

22 And Reuben answered them, saying, “Did I not speak to you, saying, ‘Do not sin against the boy’; and you would not listen? Therefore behold, his blood is now required of us.” 23 But they did not know that Joseph understood them, for he spoke to them through an interpreter. 24 And he turned himself away from them and wept. Then he returned to them again, and talked with them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes. - Genesis 42:21-24 NKJV

Joseph’s brothers talk among themselves and we catch a glimpse of their remorse. The passage of time had done nothing to diminish their guilt. Based on their exchange I wonder how many times they wished they could have gone back and done things differently. I imagine sleepless nights and profound sadness for extended periods of time and the entire household mourned the death of Joseph. Joseph learns of this along with us (the readers). He realizes the brothers still struggle with their terrible behavior, they recognize their guilt, and they have also been suffering. They were not sold as slaves but they had to witness their father going through depression, their dreams were likely haunted by memories of Joseph begging them to release him.

This reminds us that giving in to sin always causes much suffering all around. Being mean to someone never feels good in the long run. Lying and cheating never lead to joy.

Brief excursus

This may sound awful, but let me know if you agree or disagree with this thought,

Sometimes it is better to be the victim than the perpetrator of a sin.

It is awful to be on the receiving end of a wrongdoing, but your conscience is clean. Others may lie about you and persecute you as you do your absolute best to do the right thing and follow God. My approach to life is to do my very best, to do the right thing, the honest thing, the kind thing, or at least that is what I aim at. And what goes beyond that I leave up to God. Everyone else can be cheating and mean but it does not mean that that is the only approach or the best approach. I want to strive to be kind and honest even if it feels like a losing battle.

Think about this with me. We all agree that it is not good to be sold as a slave or to sell someone as a slave. But would you rather be in Joseph’s shoes or his brothers? Joseph had an incredibly difficult life, but God was with him every step of the way. His brothers got to go back home, but because of their grave sin they not only caused great suffering, they also suffered. The brothers suffered while missing out on the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Joseph also suffered, but he knew that God was with him. Joseph then takes Simeon from the 10 brothers and binds him in front of them. Although the text permits that he commanded others to bind Simeon, it also naturally reads that Joseph himself tied up his brother. (K. A. Mathews, p781)

Why Simeon?

The biblical text is not clear on the reason for Simeno being chosen, but I came across a couple of helpful opinions on this matter.

Why Simeon? He likely played a predominant role in the plot to kill Joseph. Simeon was also the toughest and cruelest of the brothers, as indicated in the Dinah incident (Gen.34:25, 30). In choosing Simeon, Joseph signified his power over all his brothers. Even if Simeon was able to stand up to his father (Gen.34:30-31), he could not stand before Joseph, who thus revealed himself as even more powerful than his father, again, a hint at his dream (Gen.37:10). - Doukhan, Jacques. Genesis. Nampa, Idaho, Pacific Press Publishing Association ; (Hagerstown, Maryland, 2016), 455.

Simeon was born by Leah, her second son after Reuben. After overhearing that Reuben came to Joseph’s defense (v. 22), Joseph may have passed over him, taking the second son in line (29:33). Moreover, there may have been a greater temptation to abandon Simeon by the others, presuming that Jacob would be less agitated about his detention, since Simeon had infuriated their father in the past (34:30; 49:5–7). A rabbinic tradition (e.g., Tg. Ps.-J.) assigned to Simeon more guilt for the conspiracy to kill Joseph (37:18–19, “they said to one another”), noting Simeon and Levi had conspired to slaughter the Shechemites (so Rashi; 34:13, 25). - K. A. Mathews, Genesis 11:27–50:26, vol. 1B, The New American Commentary (Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 2005), 781.

This situation placed the brothers in a similar spot that they had faced with young Joseph. Once they had the food for which they came, they could return and lie again to their father, leaving their brother to languish in prison. If the brothers are unrepentant, they can simply repeat similar lies regarding their brother Simeon. Joseph, however, knows something his brothers do not know. He knows the famine will last a total of 7 years. He knows there’s a very good chance, perhaps a certainty that his brothers will be back needing to buy more food.

The Brothers Return to Canaan

25 Then Joseph gave a command to fill their sacks with grain, to restore every man’s money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. Thus he did for them. 26 So they loaded their donkeys with the grain and departed from there. 27 But as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey feed at the encampment, he saw his money; and there it was, in the mouth of his sack. 28 So he said to his brothers, “My money has been restored, and there it is, in my sack!” Then their hearts failed them and they were afraid, saying to one another, “What is this that God has done to us?”

29 Then they went to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan and told him all that had happened to them, saying: 30 “The man who is lord of the land spoke roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country. 31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies. 32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is with our father this day in the land of Canaan.’ 33 Then the man, the lord of the country, said to us, ‘By this I will know that you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, take food for the famine of your households, and be gone. 34 And bring your youngest brother to me; so I shall know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. I will grant your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.’ ”

35 Then it happened as they emptied their sacks, that surprisingly each man’s bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid. 36 And Jacob their father said to them, “You have bereaved me: Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin. All these things are against me.”

37 Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you.”

38 But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is left alone. If any calamity should befall him along the way in which you go, then you would bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.” - Genesis 42:25-38 NKJV

Because of their heavy conscience and past sins, the brothers had a terrible experience even though they were able to secure life-saving food. Even the blessings they experience, such as having their money restored only cause them to experience more stress, fear, and anxiety. Joseph’s brothers exclaim, “What is this that God has done to us?” meaning that even blessings are interpreted as judgment from God. They feel guilty and are just expecting to be judged at any moment and interpret their struggles as God’s righteous judgment on them for their past sins.

The brothers also have to once again experience the anguish of their father Jacob. Jacob who had lied to his father and brother and was forced to flee his father’s home (Thy Will be Done?, and The Gate of Heaven) now experiences the other end of the trial of leaving home and that is remaining home and missing the family members who are absent. Once again we witness the pain and suffering that sin causes. Dishonest gain does not lead to joy and you never know how many people will be affected by the pain it causes. Future generations may struggle as a result of a cherished sin.

Jacob has made up his mind that Benjamin will not go with his other sons to Egypt. He is willing to give up Simeon as lost and he would rather not lose Benjamin as well. He was hoping the famine would end soon. But the famine will not end any time soon.

Recap

Joseph was the victim, he was faithful and obedient but suffered incredible injustices for years being punished despite being honest and doing his very best in everything. It is incredible that he remained faithful to God for as long as he did.

Joseph’s brothers are the villains in the story. They threw Joseph into a pit and refused to help him when he begged them to have mercy on him. They sold him as a slave (see Betrayed by Family). Because of them, Joseph had to grow up a slave (see But God Was With Him) and though he was honest and upright as a slave he was thrown in prison and stayed there for years. (see Wrongfully Accused and Dreams)

We now find out that Joseph’s brothers have been living with incredible guilt and in constant anticipation of God’s judgment for their sins. Jacob who has received his father and brother now suffers because of his sons’ deception. God was saving Jacob’s family and that portion of the ancient world through Joseph, but because of sin and lies the path to this blessing has been filled with suffering.

Takeaway

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. - Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV

God has a plan for good, but how often do our dishonesty, our mean spirit, and our jealousy add unnecessary pain and suffering?

People like to shake their fists at heaven and ask “Why God?” We wonder why God allows suffering. What if God asked us why we choose to cause suffering? Why do we yell? Why are we dishonest? Why are we violent? Why do we cheat? Why do we choose to profit off of the suffering of our neighbor?

Why did Joseph’s brothers want to kill him? Why did they sell him as a slave? Why did they lie to their father? Why did Potiphar’s wife lie about Joseph?

Do you know what stops the cycle of pain and suffering? It is not a what, but rather a who. Joseph could have had his brothers killed or left in prison for as many years as he had been in prison. He could have made his brothers his slaves. Joseph could have had Potiphar thrown in prison and made Potiphar’s wife one of his slaves. Joseph could have had the Pharaoh’s butler thrown in prison for two years so he could experience what Joseph experienced when he forgot about him for two years.

There is no record of Joseph taking revenge on anyone in Egypt, and though he is not super nice to his brothers he is not as mean as he could have been. He sends them home with food and returns all their money. Joseph decides to stop the cycle of abuse and suffering and to choose a different path.

The cycle of violence and abuse stops with us when we choose to not take out our pain and suffering on others. When you choose to love your spouse. When you choose to be present for your children. When you choose not to marry someone that you’re not willing to die for. When you choose to not take advantage of those who are vulnerable. When you choose to stand up for what is right and to help those who are in need. When you choose to volunteer and be a part of what is good in your circle of influence.

You may be unable to stop all the wars taking place around the world, but you control how you treat those around you. Just because you could pay back evil for evil it does not mean that you should.

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:17-21 NIV

Do's:

Google is always a handy tool for schedule and planning ahead. Utilize search engines and make a thorough research to have a fun vacation. Consider hiring a knowledgeable local guide to enhance your experience and provide historical insights.

Respect the Monuments: When you're at the pyramids, respect their ancient glory. Climbing on the pyramids or touching them is not allowed and can result in hefty fines. Leave no trace of your visit; help preserve these incredible structures for future generations. There would be trash bins in different establishment or round the area, do not litter.

Sun Safety: Egypt's sun can be scorching, so bring sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and plenty of water. You'll thank yourself later for staying hydrated and avoiding sunburn.

Capture Memories: Don't forget your camera! The pyramids are an Instagrammer's dream. Capture the sunrise or sunset for breathtaking shots. But remember, drones are not allowed in the vicinity.

Don'ts:

Haggling with Street Vendors: While you'll encounter plenty of enthusiastic street vendors offering souvenirs, avoid getting drawn into aggressive haggling. Polite declines and a smile go a long way.

Venturing Off the Beaten Path: Stay within designated tourist areas for safety reasons. The surrounding desert can be disorienting, and it's best to explore with a guide.

Touching Ancient Artifacts: Inside the pyramids or nearby museums, avoid touching ancient artifacts. Oils and dirt from your skin can accelerate the deterioration of priceless historical treasures.

Littering: Keep the pyramids pristine by disposing of trash in designated bins. Show respect for the incredible landscape you're exploring.

S5 Ep 15 Pt 2: Don’t Trust Anyone Who Wears a Floor Length Robe Over Their Casuals in Yugioh

Hey, it’s my birthday, so I’m gonna release this early because the rest of today I just have to work like an adult and that’s no fun.

In the first half of this episode we dunked the worlds smallest plane into a lake and so this second half of the episode involved the kids running as far away from their only responsible adults as they could.

Which like...took whole of less than a second for them to peace out and enter mortal danger.

...I’ve never been in a jungle in India but...I have seen the Jungle book many times...and there’s like tigers and stuff in there, right? and tons of monkeys that are hella mean? And freakin snakes? They sing jazz and scat? That’s some terrifying stuff.

Like these city kids have to learn at some point to fear the woods. But they just freakin don’t. And strangely, the most dangerous thing in these woods isn’t even a snake or something, but a human man just being as suspicious as possible lying prone on the ground.

The card cultist happens to have a British accent, because this voice acting team freakin loves to pull out their British accents. It’s not as lowbrow as Valon, but it’s not as...well whatever Bakura is supposed to be. He’s a lot more tame than Bakura’s, but still very British.

I don’t know if this is because British English tends to be taught instead of American sounding English in many parts of India, but, most likely they just wanted to do an accent. And like...he’s an archeologist...and so the stereotype is there...but honestly, the decision of making this guy British gets weirder and weirder as this episode goes on, get ready for it. None of you are ready for what I assume is the very obvious plot twist of this freakin guy.

Catfish of the century, this freakin guy, I’m pretty sure.

Yugi immediately believes this completely out of place white British stranger in the Indian backwoods next to this inaccessible lake and immediately thinks “yes, my Grandfather crash landed in India EXACTLY where I’m standing right now, and now I must save him.”

Thankfully, Yami exists to gently and politely tell Yugi to hella stop.

Also, I like that Yugi has finally stopped wearing his school outfit out of school. But, he is instead wearing a jacket that is so close to his school outfit I honestly couldn’t tell until the end of this episode. It’s like...I think one shade more purple, it has white piping, and his undershirt has a center seam. It’s nice Yugi has 3 versions of the same black sleeveless undershirt, and this show cares enough to show that tiny factoid about Yugi’s closet.

So, because Yugi is a dumbass and Pharaoh has to just sit back and watch this happen so he can say “told you so” later, they follow this random cultist they found in the woods. Much like Hansel and Gretel, we snack on cake crumbs all the way to the witches house, which in this case, is an undiscovered monolith you would have easily seen from outer space.

HMMMMMMMMMM.

And so get ready for this:

Hey guys.

Remember how Alexander the great was buried in a pyramid?

Now because they’re name dropping Alexander, that’s actually kind of helpful, because Alexander the Great’s favorite damn horse in the entire world died while he was at war with India so he named a city after it. It’s believed to be in Punjab, which is in the Northern part of India

Which means we first of all, definitely crossed the tallest mountain range in the world to get here, and also means that we are like...in some really disputed territory of India right now, and it is crazy that these kids went here for a vacation completely unsupervised.

Another fun fact about Alexander is that when he died, it took 6 days for his body to decompose. At the time, they thought it was because he was a God (or in Yugioh’s case, Extremely Cursed) but nowadays historians think it’s because it took him 6 days to fully die. He just wasn’t dead yet. Had to give it a minute and the ancient Babylonians just got way too excited.

Anyway, Alexander super died in Babylon so I don’t know what the hell he’s doing in India. There is a fun spot in History where his body did get dragged to a couple different places, meaning we probably did lose the original Alexander and there’s a lot of people just guessing at where he ended up...but putting him clear up in India sure was a choice when one of his assumed burial sites was literally Egypt, which would be a more fitting location for a Pyramid and a more fitting location for this show.

Especially since Alexander was trying to invent a new race and culture...it seems a little strange he’d be buried in such a massive pyramid, but maybe he got a really, really good pyramid deal from the funeral home when he was like 28 and just figured he’d change it before the time he died at 32.

Which...now that I’m older than 32, how crazy is it that Alexander the Great died at freakin 32? You blink twice and you’re 32. Is history seriously trying to tell me this guy wasn’t like secretly 62? That maybe he just celebrated his 20th for like 20 years in a row as a royal mandate? I just feel like history is playing pranks on me with Alexander.

Anyway, our weird shady new archeologist guy is named Alex and so take that as you will.

I sure hope Alexander the Great was revived to wear khakis and bother children. Guy conquered the world once and was one of history’s Freakin Worst so he does deserve it, but also...it would explain why he thinks it’s normal to wear a Darth Maul robe over your business casual.

Anyway, lets enter the obvious trap pyramid.

Joey just wanted a nice time running around Northern India. He just wanted to eat some yummy chaat and look at some tourist destinations and maybe glance at a Bollywood star or two. But instead he’s gotta deal with spike floors because Yugi couldn’t say no to a cultist.

Also...one of those spikes clearly went through Tea’s feet, right? And she is absolutely fine? Just checking on Tea’s godlike strength and clearly it is still godlike.

Alex gives us a very long explanation of how he went upstairs and Grandpa went downstairs, and there was a door or something so Alex turned back around and Grandpa was gone.

All of those steps were probably plot relevant and I’ll probably forget all about it in 2 episodes.

The thing is Alex...literally thinks he evaporated. Literally thinks that. But how do you disprove it to this freakin guy who like...might have named a city after his horse once and thinks that’s a normal and acceptable thing to do?

and so Joey immediately leaps onto the haunted playing floor.

the way Yugi said this line was sort of hilarious to me so I may cap it. If I remember to do it (I’ve been a little busier lately, with things opening up, as you can tell because my update schedule is in the toilet.)

So, if Joey jumps in...everyone else has to, also.

And we say good bye to Alex and enter the new forest zone, which looks a LOT like the other forest we were just in.

Nice Protoss armor.

We get some hijinks from the local wildlife, which are all cards but real (but not real because we’re in a board game...don’t think about it) and the off brand Sheikah tablets have helpful monsters in them if you touch em.

This season may have been better off as a video game, being honest.

Joey has gone somewhere else, despite going onto the same game tile, and he’s too busy on a mountain range to really help anyone out. So he’s just gonna vibe up here for a bit.

Tea got up after this point and said along the lines of “k, what’s next?” Because mortal danger does not affect her and she fears nothing.

At a beach somewhere, Tea and Tristan spend some quality time together forming a new family with whatever these creatures are.

And Tea’s love of her winged angel comes full circle and now I will suffer this winged orb for the rest of this arc, pretty sure.

Please admire the number of belts on Tea. Her outfit is like max 00′s and I appreciate that. We’ve had a lot of questionable fashion on Yugioh, but they actually dressed Tea pretty on point this arc. Like I often feel like 00′s fashion is hard to define or describe, but it’s Tea right now. That’s it. She did it, it’s right there.

Yugi gets a new flagship card for this arc, and this time it’s Celtic Guardian. Hell why? I feel like his defining card changes every single arc, and they need to like focus and just give him one. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s still Dark Magician...and maybe the show forgot?

How are they seen by others? I think people see her as fun, wholesome, cute… she hates 2 out of 3 of those descriptors though, because she feels like people don’t take her seriously because of them.

How competitive are they? Not really all that competitive

How do they react to praise? She has some sort of goofy response and a compliment back, shift the attention off her.

How do they react to criticism? It takes a moment, she doesn’t just accept it instantly, but she can eventually come around to it.

What are their biggest secrets? I don’t really think she has secrets. She usually is fairly open about things. There are things she has yet to tell herself… but mostly she says what she thinks and feels.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Is their family big or small? Who does it consist of? Just her, her mom and dad, and brother.

What is their perception of family? She loves her family and depends on them, but she firmly believes that that same kind of family can be found in other places. It’s not all about blood.

Describe their best friend. Binx is certainly the yin to her yang sometimes. He’s deep and contemplative, made up by centuries of experiences and layers that she really is only starting to peel back. She feels their connection goes deeper than that of friends, though. This is her person, her soul mate in life. Her other bestie is Fran. Their immortality has allowed her to create a friend in them that you normally might not see with their vast age difference.

Describe their other friends. Dani’s type is apparently immortal hot men, and she is not complaining. She surrounds herself with them. Outside of that, when it comes to friends her own age, it’s more of a mix of personalities. She’s sweet, but mischievous, which allows her to be friends with people like Logan and Aurora and remain completely herself. She likes having a friend for all occasions.

Describe their acquaintances. Dani probably has acquaintances, but she’s quick to call you her friend, regardless of how the other person might see it.

Do they have any pets? She needs a new cat, preferably a regular one this time.

PAST AND FUTURE

What was your character like as a baby? As a child? I think her personality has been fairly steady throughout her life. She’s always been relatively upbeat and a troublemaker.

Did they grow up rich or poor? Middle class.

Did they grow up nurtured or neglected? Nurtured.

What is their greatest achievement? I don’t know if she has one yet. In writing her, I like to take the mentality that until the moment the witches were released, her life was very ordinary. She wasn’t rich, or poor, or had anything big and dramatic happen to her. All her greatest achievements as well are yet to come.

What was their first kiss like? It was fine. Nothing to write home about.

What are their ambitions? She currently is really into learning about magic and really getting to a place of understanding of it. Partly she thinks it will help her fight against the witches, but beneath that, she hopes understanding magic will make it less frightening.

What advice would they give their younger self? “It’s going to be scary but it’s going to be worth it. Just be brave.”

What smells remind them of their childhood? Salt air

What was their childhood ambition? To be Doctor Dolittle

Did they have an imaginary childhood friend? Oh, for sure. His name was also Max, like her brother, was the same age, but was always there to play with her.

When was the last time they were crushed with disappointment? When she thought Binx had left her.

What past act are they most ashamed of? Unleashing the witches onto the world. She wouldn’t take it back, because it brought so much to her life, but she is aware of the danger of it. It’s a complicated feeling that she struggles to navigate.

LOVE

Do they believe in love at first sight? I think she does in the way that most young people have an impractical idea of what love is, but she would say that she doesn’t believe in love at first sight though.

Are they in a relationship? Not at the moment.

How do they behave in a relationship? She’s all about the fun aspects of relationships. She loves just goofing off with the person, is constantly looking for excuses to be around them, trying to make them laugh and have fun with her.

When did you character last have sex? A couple years ago.

What sort of sex do they have? The inexperienced kind.

Has your character ever been in love? Nope

Have they ever had their heart broken? … probably, but only in like, having a deep crush on a guy who doesn’t like her back and how that feels really serious and earth-shattering in that moment when you’re young.

CONFLICT

How do they respond to a threat? She tells her army of hot immortal men… lol, she actually can get a little mouthy when she’s in danger. It’s her defense mechanism.

Are they most likely to fight with their fists or their tongue? Tongue, but she’s not unwilling to fight with her fists. She never has, but she could.

What is your character’s kryptonite? If someone she loves is in danger, she would probably give the person whatever they wanted.

If your character could only save one thing from their burning house, what would it be? Her cat.

How do they perceive strangers? She used to be very open with strangers, and to an extent, she still is. She’ll tell you her life story if you get her going. It doesn’t mean she is as willing to trust people as she used to be with the important things.

What is their choice of weapon? Flamethrower, if she’s being given the option. Who would pick anything else?

What living person do they most despise? The witches.

Have they ever been bullied or teased? Nothing serious, I doubt.

Where do they go when they’re angry? Dani is very much a pillow screamer. Her pillow, your pillow, if she gets pissed, no pillow is safe from being screamed into.

Who are their enemies and why? The witches. They might give a damn about Dani but she feels its her duty to keep people safe from them. She doesn’t know how to do that yet, but she’s learning. She’s ready to make them give a damn.

WORK, EDUCATION AND HOBBIES

What is their current job? Student.

What are some of their past jobs? She once wore an awful hat and sold corndogs on a pier before they moved here.

What are their hobbies? She loves a good adventure as much as she loves digging into Howl’s collection of magic materials.

Educational background? Standard public education.

Intelligence level? Average.

Do they play a sport? Are they any good? She played soccer through high school and was decent enough at it to make the All-State team.

What is their socioeconomic status? Middle class.

What is their favorite animal? Cat.

What is on their bedside table? Alarm clock, phone charger, lamp

What is in their car? Phone charger, some takeout trash in a garbage bag

What is in their purse or wallet? Wallet, phone, some treats for when Binx is in cat form, and also candy for both of them when he isn’t

What is in their pockets? Keys

SPIRITUALITY

Do they believe in the afterlife? She would have said no before now, but she’s at this point where she really doesn’t know what to believe about anything. She’s searching for the answers to these questions that will help the world make sense to her again.

What are their religious views? Searching.

What do they think heaven is? If there is a heaven, it is probably pretty close to the Christian version – but she would also tell you she really doesn’t know what other people believe besides so she might not be the best to ask.

What do they think hell is? Fire.

Are they superstitious? I think she’s probably fairly superstitious at this point in her life. If magic is real, then all bets are off on what else is or is not.

What would they like to be reincarnated as? Something cool, like a falcon.

How would they like to die? Quick and painless, please.

What is your character’s spirit animal? Probably a chipmunk or something along those lines.

What is their zodiac sign? Cancer

What do they think is the worst thing that can be done to a person? Abandonment

What is their view of ‘freedom’? I highly doubt she’s given this much thought. Just being free to do what you want.

When did they last lie? Maybe a couple days ago… little white lies, nothing serious.

What’s their view of lying? If something is serious, it is best not to.

When did they last make a promise? Earlier today? She throws promises around like softballs.

Did they keep or break their last promise? Keep. She always tries to keep them.

DAILY LIFE

What are their eating habits? I mean, probably not great. She’s a college student, so a lot of Ramen and pizza.

Describe their home. Just an average middle class home. Her own room that’s done up with posters and black and purple.

Are they minimalist or a clutter hoarder? Clutter hoarder.

What do they do first thing on a weekday morning? Coffee.

What do they do on a Sunday afternoon? Lay around in her room with Binx or at Howl’s shop.

What do they do on a Friday night? She loves a good party.

What is the soft drink of choice? Dr. Pepper

What is their alcoholic drink of choice? Whiskey and coke (see: what’s in her fridge)

MISCELLANEOUS

What or who would your character dress up as for Halloween? She loves Halloween and a great monster costume.

Are they comfortable with technology? I would say she has the average teen grasp of technology.

If they could save one person, who would it be? Binx or a member of her family

If they could call one person for help, who would it be? Howl seems the most capable

What is their perception of redemption? Everyone is capable of redemption, but she’s aware that giving people that second chance is easier said than done.

What would they do if they won the lottery? Put it all in a room and then roll around in it.

What is their favourite fairytale? Jack and the Beanstalk

What fairytale do they hate? Snow White

Do they believe in happy endings? She believes some people get them and hopes that she’s one of the lucky ones that does.

What is their idea of perfect happiness? She’s sitting in a room, surrounded by the people she loves, all laughing, all talking, all enjoying each other.

What would they ask a fortune teller? She would be completely unable to narrow that down. She’d just be like, tell me everything you see!!

If your character could travel through time, where would they go? Dinosaurs, baby!

What sport do they excel at? Soccer

Thousand Scars Author Interview

Hey guys, back with a new isolation interview! I’ll have an SPFBO author interview ready for the weekend, but I’d like to bring back an old survivor of the Scar den in Deston Munden. Hope you guys enjoy!

First of all, tell me about yourself! What do you write?

Hello again! I’m Deston J. Munden, former SPFBO writer and now resident stuck in the house author. I’m a science fiction and fantasy author who is surviving all this craziness by stuffing his head full on Dungeons and Dragons characters and learning how to cook neat food. I’m the author of two series, Dargath Chronicles and Dusk Orbit Blues, both which are getting an audiobook real soon. It’s a pleasure to be back.

How do you develop your plots and characters?

I’ve been asked this quite a few times and I never feel like my answers are satisfactory, but nevertheless true. They just kinda come to me. There are small inciting events that makes me want to develop a character or a plot. It could just be me sitting and reading. It could just me be playing a game or roleplaying a completely unrelated character. From there, I put them on what I called the simmer mode. I slowly develop them in my head until they are ready for the drafting phase.

Tell the world about your current project!

Dargath is a fun, high fantasy world that I created a while back. It’s a world where everyone has magic and no one is truly human. I wanted to create a world where magic was a common stance and everyone has a degree of it that is unique to them. Also, I wanted a world where the reader doesn’t go in with the natural biasness of starting with a human. Yes, there are human-like races, but I wanted to have this mystical feeling to everything. The world is split into two continents, eight races, and plenty of subraces. It’s rich in history, politics, and turmoil while also having that classic dungeons and dragons type of feeling to the world. If that seems like your type of thing, try me out!

Who would you say is the main character of your latest novel? And tell me a little bit about them!

Ser Torlyek is the main character of the novel that is coming out later this year. I’ve been marketing him as Neville Longbottom meets Thor from the MCU and Steven Universe. He’s my first autistic main character who adores knights and honor beyond anything else. He’s also a complex character who has a deep backstory with his family. Duke’s Brand follows him as he comes to terms with who he is now as well as him making friends along the way. I hope that you guys enjoy him as much as I enjoyed writing him.

Have you been to any conventions? If so, tell me a little about them!

I’ve been to so many conventions! They are some of my favorite places to go for vacations. They are so lively and powerful, and you get to meet so many fellow nerds. My goal this year was to finally sell my books at a convention. Sadly, that didn’t happen. Now, I’m going through convention withdrawal. If you never gone to a convention before, I’ll honestly suggest that you try it out. There are so many cool things that you can find and you’ll meet so many cool people.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I realized that I wanted to be a writer when I was young. Luckily, none of my teachers tried to squash that love. Instead, they tried their hardest to cultivate the talent that they saw. I always wrote fan fictions and loved the creative writing assignments given to me. But, it wasn’t until after college where I realized this was a career I could do. Self-publishing opened an entirely new opportunity for me and ever since I’ve been pushing myself more and more to expand my dream into a reality.

If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?

Rome, hands down. There’s so much history there that I would love to explore and set a story within. I think it would be fun to explore the mythology and the people of rome and wrapping that up in a story that I would write.

What advice would you give new writers?

Finish. That. First. Draft. I’ve seen so many new writers get into what I call the world building loop or worse the first chapter loop. Its when a new writer keeps world building or writing the first chapter endlessly until the end of time. That is not how you’re going to improve. You’re going to have to finish that first draft at one point or another. Not to say pre-writing is not important, however, if you’re stuck on it you need to start on the first draft. As a new writer, learning how to finish a project is key.

What real-life inspirations did you draw from for the worldbuilding?

Too many. I usually get inspiration from history, cultures, food, architecture, generally whatever that I think would make my world feel richer and livelier. Each of the races are inspired somewhat after certain regions of our world albeit blended in such a way to better fit the region I’m going for. I’ve used things from Africa, the Middle East, Medieval Europe, Egypt, etc to make my world feel stronger and cohesive. It’s a fun experience as a history and culture nerd.

What inspires you to write?

I enjoy it. That’s the long and short of it all. Writing is a passion of mine. I love sitting down at the computer and letting my imagination go wild. There’s a magic to it all. I used to write after I finished my schoolwork in class just for fun. I didn’t realize that was weird until my teacher saw me doing it while everyone else was playing games on the computer. Writing is my creative outlet and without it I might burst.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

The hardest part for me is keeping the pace with everything. There’s a lot that goes into be an author. Some days I just want to sit down and write, but I know I can’t do that all the time. There are days where I’m going to have to research, do my social media, and market the books I already have released. Managing my time has become quite difficult.

What is your routine when writing, if any? If you don’t follow a routine, why not?

My routine is usually 8-4 every weekday. If I don’t follow this schedule, I will and can work myself to death.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write in any of your books, and why?

This is spoiler territory. There’s a certain scene in Tavern that I really enjoy that has made people lose their marbles and I always laugh manically about when I get a message about it. Recently though, I’ve been getting a lot of “OMG” about a certain scene in the middle of Dusk Mountain Blues. It makes me giggle. I might be evil.

What these two scenes have in common is that I throw the reader for a loop. I love doing that.

Did you learn anything from writing your latest book? If so, what was it?

Writing Duke’s Brand and Dusk Ocean Blues taught me a lot how to condense my writing style a bit. Lately, I’ve been trying to hone my writing style a bit. I feel like writing these two books has helped that a lot going forward.

Are you a plotter or a pantser? A gardener or an architect?

I am definitely a pantser. I’m all about writing it and winging it until I get to the second draft.

If you had to give up either snacks and drinks during writing sessions, or music, which would you find more difficult to say goodbye to?

Definitely snacks. I can give up music if I had to, but snacks I need to survive. I can’t imagine how I’ll get through certain parts of my novel without snacking on some chips or some other ungodly unhealthy food or beverage.

Which is your favorite season to write in, and why?

Spring. There is something about the temperature and the outside environment that brings out the power in me.

It’s sometimes difficult to get into understanding the characters we write. How do you go about it?

It’s all about learning how that character ticks. The big thing I’ve realized about getting in the mindset of a character is knowing their motivation. A person drive and ambition tell a lot about the character as a whole and getting into the mindset of them. You gotta realize what they want to realize who they are. From there, I think, their personalities, dreams, relationships, etc becomes more apparent the more you write it.

What are your future project(s)?

What is your favorite book ever written?

I’m pleading the fifth here. I enjoy all the books that I’ve written so far. There are parts where I feel like I’ve done better in this book while others in that one. So at the end the day, I can’t choose.

What makes a good villain?

A good motivation and a strong personality. I’m the type of person that enjoys a big personality in my villain over sheer fear and power they may possess. The villains that have a good time while also having depth speak out to me. Yes, I do enjoy the looming dark lord type villain as well, but if I can somehow get both I’m a happy camper.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Cooking! It’s my favorite past time other than video games and tabletop RPGs. I’m not as good as it as other people, but I’m trying my best and I’m learning every day!

If you couldn’t be an author, what ideal job would you like to do?

A chef! Like I said before, cooking is a fun hobby and being a chef/cook would be a fun job for me. I also like to bake, so a baker would be not too far behind. I just like working with food.

Coffee or Tea? Or (exult deep breath) what other drink do you prefer, if you like neither?

Tea! There are so many different types of teas and most which I can drink (because I can’t have a lot of caffeinated beverages). I prefer fruity teas, but I’m willing to try any of it.

You can travel to anywhere in the universe. Where would you go, and why?

Whew. I don’t know. I’ll probably want to try to find new planets to explore, specifically with new life.

It’s a very difficult time right now for the world. When quarantine and pandemic comes to an end, what is the first thing you would like to do?

Travel more and meet some of my online friends. My goal this year was to travel more, get out there, and meet some of the people that I’ve been talking to for ages. The quarantine and pandemic put that to a screeching halt. I want to go to more conventions, I want to see more places, and I want just enjoy life more. This whole situation made me realize that I haven’t been out nearly as much as I want to be.

How it Sounds- Through Heaven’s Eyes

Of the various winter holidays, Christmas completely dominates. The radio is filled with Christmas music, every network ever has a 12 days of Christmas marathon, Hallmark and Lifetime shit out another few dozen Christmas romcoms, and stores spend a solid month and a half decked out in red and green. While I certainly enjoy the Christmas spirit, it makes the literally darkest days of the year feel a whole lot brighter, it’s a little tedious to see the gentiles completely dominate the season. Despite Adam Sandler’s best efforts, there is next to no good Hanukkah content.

But for the Spring holidays? I guess they put all their effort into Christmas movies, because Easter doesn’t have shit. Like, what, are you gonna sit around and watch Hop?? Gonna watch Passion of the Christ with the grandkids after Easter brunch? Nah, THE springtime holiday movie belongs to Passover and Prince of Egypt, the family funtime singalong classic about how God unleashed 10 Plagues on a bunch of slaveowners.

Every song in Prince of Egypt slaps. The opening is hard-hitting and emotional, All I Ever Wanted is a fantastic inversion of the traditional “Disney Princess” song, Playing With the Big Boys might be my favorite villains song ever, The Plagues is low and menacing, and the closing song is triumphant and joyous and almost makes you forget the protagonists are about to wander in the desert for 40 years. The topic of today’s post is Through Heaven’s Eyes, which I wouldn’t say is my favorite song on the playlist but it never fails to make me smile.

The song starts with a sort of desert aesthetic (sound-aesthetic?), which makes sense because the song takes place in the desert. It kicks off with a light percussion, a soft melody, then joined by a tambourine rhythm and woodwind melody that sounds like it doesn’t have a care in the world. It’s not a quick or bombastic opening, it’s the sound of waking up on vacation with the sun rising out the window. You can go back to sleep if you want, but you don’t really want to, y’know? It’s good that the option’s there and all, but you’d much rather just go out on the patio with a sweet drink and watch the sun come up.

The verses are delivered by a male soloist, a soft but confident baritone who sounds like you’d imagine the old retired dudes who play chess at the park in stock photos. I’ve never met someone who does that in real life, but if they are out there this is what they probably sound like when you sit down next to them and offer life advice. Because that’s what he’s doing. He’s not some grumpy old dude telling you to “get some perspective”, he’s a wise old grandpa teaching you how to do it. The instruments are subdued behind his voice, but they don’t completely fall to the background. They dance behind him, playing little riffs to bolster his voice, and after his first stanza the woodwind pipes up in agreement. A happy little “doo doo doo doo doo doo doo!” as if his sage advice has enriched their life.

The instrumentation builds through the next verse, blooming like one of those time lapses of a flower. It’s exciting, but not like rollercoaster exciting, it’s like going to the airport to meet an old friend exciting. The singer’s voice remains mostly steady, but you can tell he’s excited too. This is the excitement of giving, the feeling when you give a friend a birthday present and they’re about to open it. There’s no nerves, no excess energy, just the anticipation that fills you right before experiencing joy.

And then the joy happens. The chorus is a basic melody sung by the ensemble, and there’s no words to it. It’s a few syllables sung in a melody so simple that a four year old can do it. And that’s the point. Everyone is invited to join in, to hold hands and dance around in a circle. You don’t need to know how to sing, you don’t need to be remotely coordinated. You just have to throw yourself into the song and allow it to welcome you.

The instrumentals don’t hold back anymore. How could they? This kind of joy is contagious, when the ensemble gets to sing and dance around you bet that the instruments are gonna follow. Still, it never overwhelms- they’re bright and exuberant, but coordinated and don’t try to play over each other. The singer sounds more animated now, so full of energy that you can picture him moving around like an actor in a stage play. Just before the bridge, it all comes together in a crescendo that feels like the hug you’re gonna give all your friends after we all get the covid vaccine. Gonna run right up to them and just jump at them, squeeze the homies real tight and just stand there with each other for a moment because we’re all touch starved. But we can’t do that yet, so the song will have to be good enough.

The bridge has a nice, firm percussion. Oh yeah. That’s the stuff. Then the violin kicks in a bit and OH yeah, that’s the stuff.

The next chorus starts out slower, not slow, but you can tell they’re holding back a bit. It’s for good reason, though, because when they go all out it’s even more exciting. It’s like a party, but not your everyday frat party where people are either high or pretending to have fun, an honest to god party where all your friends are there and you don’t have to put a face on to fit in. Dance as badly as you want, we’re all friends here, you’ll fit right in.

The last verse slows down a bit for real this time, like flowers blowing in the evening wind. The ensemble harmonizes behind the singer for a transcendental feeling of togetherness, then joins in for the last couple lines. They’re triumphant, not a competitive triumph, but the feeling you get when everyone comes together and pitches in to make a success. The last line is booming, a sustained final note as the instruments play the song’s motif and close out the song. The resolution is like crashing onto your mattress after a busy day, letting any tiredness wash off and make room for good memories.

I think this is where I give some big thoughtful conclusion about the meaning of the song and all that. That’s the song’s job though, go listen to it. And watch Prince of Egypt. And here’s a fun cover of the song too.

Do you have an empty notebook that just lies on your desk, intimidating you? Do you have the impulse to buy every aesthetically pleasing notebook you come across? Do you want a new hobby?

I myself am not ashamed to say I said yes to all of these. So, I’ve compiled a list of ideas for your empty notebooks!

➼ Recipe collection - Are your grandma’s family recipes deliciously akin to Gordon Ramsey’s? Be anything but an idiot sandwich by putting them all in a notebook! Also good for afood experiment journal, i.e. how many eggs can you put in a souffle before it comes out sous - bon? Record your findings!

➼ Vacation planner - Pretty self explanatory. You don’t need to actually be going on a trip to start one of these! I have several of trips to France, Egypt, and Greece, full of things I can’t afford right now. Mostly, they’re a motivation for me to get my studies done so one day I can go to these beautiful places.

➼ Bucket lists - Currently, my bucket lists includes learning how to wayfind (who doesn’t want to be Moana?), traveling (see vacation planner above), and getting a PhD! Yours can be separated by goal type such as adventure, travel, scholarly, etc.

➼ Budget lists - As a broke student, I don’t have much money. When I do have some, I like to keep track of it. Of course, there are cool apps for this, but sometimes having it handwritten makes the money feel more like yours.

➼ Book list - I always seem to buy brand new books, when I haven’t read the ones I have at home. In my defense... well, I have no defense, but they had pretty covers! Moving on, you can keep track of all the books you have to read, the books you want to buy, and the books you’ve stolen from your school library. I won’t judge!

➼ Social media planner - I have a notebook to plan all my tumblr posts. I’m not improvisationally eloquent, so to speak, so I have to write everything down including when I plan to make the posts.

➼ Quote collection - I love this idea so much! It’s one of my favorite things to keep a pretentious quote on hand from The Secret History so I can show all my friends how much I love Henry Winter.

➼ Astronomy journal - Does the Libra moon throw off your Capricorn rising sign? Write about the moon phases and how they reflect your mood! Also, you can note the different constellations in the sky during a specific season to get a better understanding of our beautiful world.

➼ Handwriting journal - This one I take straight from personal experience. My handwriting was atrocious until 8th grade, when I started to want aesthetically pleasing notes. I used all types of pens, pencils, and brush pens in this book. Over time, my handwriting actually improved! Although it took a good 3 months to see a difference, slow progress is still progress. This can be accompanied by lots of calligraphy youtube videos and your teachers marking your test wrong because they can’t read your handwriting.

More favorite songs: I just went through my itunes list to see which ones stick out. Here are some of them. Scars to Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara, Blown Away by Carrie Underwood, A Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay, Numb/Encore by Jay-Z & Linkin Park, Because of You by Kelly Clarkson, You Say by Lauren Daigle, The Mummers Dance by Loreena McKennitt, Like a Prayer by Madonna, Say It Right by Nelly Furtado, Slow Hands by Niall Horan, Crash and Burn by Savage Garden, Elastic Heart by Sia. And to finish I’ll add that I have 22 various Taylor Swift songs downloaded. And Backstreet Boys and N’Sync were popular when I was in high school so I have several of their songs too. Of course there is plenty more that I left out but I think all the ones listed above give you an idea of what type of music I like.

Favorite place to travel: I’m actually not much of a traveler. Growing up in a family with 6 kids we didn’t have much extra money to take vacations. However, I have been to Washington D.C. twice and I loved it. I would go again in a heartbeat. The Smithsonian is amazing. I would also love to go to London and visit all the English monarchy sites. Also, ever since I was little I’ve loved ancient Egyptian history so I think it would be fun to visit Egypt and see the sites.

Favorite animals: What immediately comes to mind is dogs. They each have their own little personalities and are so cute.

Animal I would want: Probably same as above. I am a huge fan of dogs. Outside of them I can’t really think of anything I would like to own. Nothing else really comes to mind.

Summer break. The first day seemed to go well. After a ride home from the packed station you saw along the way the great number of titles surrounding the year in Hogwarts and wonders at what this summer would bring. The brilliant takedown of a secretive Corporation R that had plotted to unleash the creatures and curses trapped in those vaults on the students of Hogwarts. The one to draw the largest reaction from you was the one titled, ‘Swept Up and Tucked Away!’ The image under the title was a caricature of Fudge sweeping up small doodles of your duel and taming of the creatures in the school under a thick rug with the words ‘The Black Plague- Dangerous - DO NOT SHIFT’ off to the sides were scribble of word bubbles reading, ‘Shhh!’

Shaking your head you continued past the news stand only to pause at the paper offered to you with a golden ink filled quill you gladly signed for the Wizard who grinned for the picture his nephew. Revealed, when you blinked the spots from your eyes, to be Collin with a smaller version of himself at his side waving up at you before stealing a picture of Harry beside you. The pair darted off with their Uncle leaving you to be wrapped under Regulus’ arm to guide you back to the path out to the bus taking you back to the Grimmauld place entrance of your home while Remus guided Harry back to the Dursleys.

No matter the trouble of your last summer right off you were again met with a list of places you would travel through Europe to gain more supplies for antidotes. By day you trekked through the wilds with the twins, nights however in your tent you would sit up reading through your frequent streams of letters.

Harry’s about how the first week of his trip was going with the visit of Vernon’s sister Marge.

Percy’s came with news on his offered internship in the Ministry for after his final year he hoped he could use to get close to Fudge in hopes of helping you somehow.

Hermione’s came with news of her own summer break in Paris with her grandparents to further her language and musical studies. A trip meaning she would have to leave Crookshanks at your home until school began again.

Ginny’s posed a new dilemma, questions of dates she could go on with Dean, who she was supposed to be supervised by Bill in his month long vacation between treasure hunting trips. Though in his own he couldn’t be too much trouble but as any older brother he was set on ensuring his baby sister was well protected and set on ensuring she remained so. A task Ron decided to join in on, hence the letters, pleas to you to see if you could calm their protective natures.

Neville and Draco’s were chalk full of ideas they hoped to get done through the summer break before heading back to school again.

Swinging around from a trip to the outskirts of Greece just as you made it to your bed in the Wizard Hostel you had gotten a room in a folded pig message from Percy your head turned to grab the letter unfolding at its last oink. Giggling to yourself you turned over on your bed relaying to the guys, “Harry blew up Uncle Vernon’s sister Marge.”

George laughed out loud as Fred snorted into his pillow through Regulus’ chortle through the bathroom door. Continuing on you read, “He took the Knight Bus to the Leaky Cauldron, Remus had to go get him. Apparently Fudge wanted to tell him he was being given a warning himself.”

George, “Ooh, bet that was a cheery conversation.”

Stretching out in your cot next to Regulus’ you set the letter down and hugged your pillow under your head as you closed your eyes, “Bet Petunia will be thrilled at having to keep that to herself after they obliviated Marge. Heard from Harry even she can barely stand Marge.”

Fred chuckled and sighed out, “Well, we’ll be home before Thursday if all goes as planned.”

July 30th rolled around and as usual for Neville’s birthday you made sure he got his favorite lunch and cake and joined him in a day at the movies to give him some alone time with you. Draco decided to tag along with Ron, and Harry in their hunt for Gnomes at the Hollow to help out Molly with her garden.

The next day had Harry’s birthday, which had him and the kids rushing to the movies themselves in your day at the Hollow helping Molly to prep the family dinner while she focused on her levitating marvel of a cake. Though your mind in the numbing chopping and stewing of veggies raced back to your letter from Peter that Riddle was still alive but very close to death. Still, he remained in the safe house keeping Riddle hidden and his tiny frail body alive unwilling to harm something so helpless no matter how evil the creature could grow to be.

The longer your mind lingered on it the darker your hair grew, splitting through your racing thoughts Molly’s voice sounded in concern, “Jaqi?” Instantly your eyes jumped to hers and you heard her ask at your hair shifting back to silvery blue with a curious grin, “Where did you roam off to?”

“Oh. Grindlewald.” Her lips parted and you shook your head, “Nothing like that. Just, I was looking up this ring, I found, in the library I found a journal and it had a note between Dumbledore and Grindlewald.”

Molly nodded, “Oh that,” releasing a calming breath, “From what we know, they were friends growing up, though Grindlewald went to Durmstrang. Dumbledore was the only Wizard he ever feared.”

“Because they knew each other so well?” She nodded, “From what I hear only Grindlewald was worse than Riddle.”

Molly huffed, “Oh, now, I don’t mean to shock you but, I would have to say,” her eyes wandered to the door ensuring you were alone still then back to you, “Grindelwald never did half the atrocious things Riddle did. All without reason, Riddle was selfish and hated that he was hated by his family, attacked children, infants no less. Yes Grindelwald picked up the worst of the worst but, he had standards.”

“Hypothetically, if Grindelwald broke free-,”

Molly scoffed turning to grab some more food coloring, “He would mop the floor with Riddle. Wouldn’t so much as be able to lift his wand.” Her eyes twitched up to yours and she froze for a moment then moved closer to you tapping her fingers under your chin, “I understand you’re scared. Rightly so. None can tell how fate will lead us about. Let’s hope we never have to let that monster out of his cage.” You nodded and she said, “Things will look up.” Moving back to her former place she added, “You will see.”

By the next Monday you were off again and promised to meet with Bernadette on the tail end of your trip to Brazil for some tea. The whole day you four spent with her reliving the years she had shared with your mother, complete with a set of copies for the shows they had done together in the summers before you were born to add to your collection. A box of pictures too were added to your arms after the tight hug she gave you, once again reminding you that any mother would be proud of you for all you had done. Aiding in the growing freedom of the Lycans in the Western Wizarding World and for all you had done the year prior.

One more train ride, where you started to feel you were living in these days outside of school, and you were home again. Not a minute after your bags hit the ground you turned to exit your room after changing your tank top and flannel shirt before meeting Ginny in the hall for the walk down to breakfast. Just back from the family trip to Egypt, on which you dropped the twins off for a few days with their family to give you another day to head off over to New Zealand, where you met up with your father, Neville and Draco for a weekend trip of your own.

Molly had spent the night before working in the Ministry so your Uncles were tasked with parenting your brood and breakfast. Her path crossed yours on her late return in her groggy pace to her seat at the end of the table beside Arthur who gave her a sleepy grin and slid her coffee he had brewed for her closer to her reach while you dropped into your seat. Reaching out you grabbed your empty glass, smoothing your finger along the rim to fill it with apple juice in your dad’s carrying out the first helping of breakfast in the arrival of the younger kids and Percy.

Seats filled and in the emptying of plates your eyes rose to the pair of owls arriving, yours swooped around your head dropping your letters before landing on the back of your chair as Percy reached out to grab Errol from his crash landing into the table. Settling her on the back of his chair he eyed the letters and passed them out, “Ron, Ginny, Fred, and George.” Keeping the last for himself.

Wetting your lips you eyed your letters you passed out, “Harry, Draco and Neville.” Keeping yours in your hand you turned over and broke the seal to pull out the list of required supplies only to find an extra letter.

Wiggling in his seat Percy chuckled and flashed the small pin included in his letter, “Yes! I’m Head Boy!” The cheer or clap he had expected from you didn’t come as you and the twins stared at your letter making him ask, “Jaqi, what’s wrong?” Drawing all eyes to you three.

Sirius, “Pumpkin?”

Turning your letter you handed to your dad you said, “Prefect.”

His brows furrowed while the twins swapped their letters to double check the contents then said, “Us too.”

Remus curtly laughed and covered his face for a moment while Sirius burst into giggles as Ginny asked, “Didn’t you have detention most of the year?”

You three nodded, “Yup.”

Remus chuckled as Sirius passed you back your letter, “They did the same with Remus being jumped over by for Head Boy. Merlin knows he didn’t recognize the rules. You are influential.”

Regulus, “Plus, you’re already up most of the night patrolling anyways.”

You looked to Percy, who was grinning at you widely as you said, “Congrats Percy.”

Percy, “Same to you. Glad to have you three on the crew.”

Sirius’ grin spread and he kept looking over at Remus who sharply said, “Stop it.”

Regulus chuckled saying, “Oh now, come on, share the good news.”

Your eyes all turned to the pair while Remus answered, “I suppose I have to now!” His eyes turned to look over you all before he said, “Well, it appears, I, um, well, I suppose I should say-,”

Sirius rolled his eyes saying giddily, “He’s your new DA Professor!”

Remus rolled his eyes through Sirius’ side hug and peck on the cheek in Regulus’ pat on the back while you all cheered and clapped for Remus as Ron said, “Finally, a Professor we can learn from.”

Harry, “In Defense at least. Please don’t tell McGonagall he said that.”

Remus ginned shaking his head, “Oh, I would never do that.” He looked to you, “It seems with my new position I will be needing a supply of things so I will be escorting you all through your shopping.”

Allowing Molly to nap the younger kids joined you all off through the muggle streets making your way to the Leaky Cauldron that you passed through entering Diagon Alley. Each shop nearly was stopped in and while Remus made a stop in at Knockturn Alley you and the twins eyed the continually bare corner shop that kept drawing your eye. Supposedly one of the most expensive spots up for purchase another magical tea shop had their eye on for a third branch, but since your first trip by it two years prior the owner, a distant cousin of your father’s who caught your interest. His pure hatred of those so called ‘dim witted doily shops’ had him taking an instant interest in why you, his most famous relative alive, were interested.

One brunch at the Leaky Cauldron was all it took when he saw your future plans for the shop of your dreams, obscure lists of dreamed up products and potions yet to be perfected for sale from a trio of teenagers still in their early years of schooling. That felt right to him, so a bargain was set. He would keep to his bare minimum sales in the obscure furniture shop until you were legally old enough to take it off his hands, insisting you were the only one he would sell to. A promise he secured with a binding magical contract witnessed by Sirius and Regulus who were also eager to see what you could do with it.

Fred, “Corner shop, 93, brilliant number.” He said eyeing the lilac fading paint along the sides.

George, “It’ll need a new coat or three.”

He smirked joining Fred in looking at you, “Keeping the purple of course.”

You nodded and giggled pulling out your shrinking journal for the shop ideas that grew as you opened it to the page with a moving doodle across the page making them both grin when they looked at it, “Thought this up for over the door.”

At their shared grinning face and an arm extending to raise a top hat with a bunny underneath they both replied, “Brilliant!” Both staring at the yellow and orange logo you had decided on, “Weasley Wizard Wheezes.” All in a circle with a silhouette of the boys on either side of you with your arms on their shoulders with theirs around your middle and their feet spread apart to touch one of each to yours forming a trio of W’s for a subtler logo on the smaller packages and products.

Fred, “And of course the bunny will have to have purple eyes and color changing fur, maybe based on the weather.”

George, “If you’re trying to hide in plain sight we should at least leave a hint or two.”

You giggled and closed the book as Harry furrowed his brows peering up at the building, “Why do you keep staring at this building each time we pass it?”

The three of you replied, “It’s gonna be ours.”

He looked at it again, “What would you want with that shop for?”

Your brow inched up and Ron said, “Doubt they’ll ever sell it. Heard from the shop keep down the way he’s turned away hundreds of offers. Even one for 500 galleons over the book value.”

Harry, “What would you want to sell furniture for?”

At that you giggled and Remus arrived again with a grin saying, “Alright you lot, back to the Cauldron for lunch and then back to the house. I know you’ve got the evening planned on sorting out your trunks.”

Ginny, “We’ve still got a week yet.”

Remus chuckled stealing a glance back at you, “Some of you have a larger selection to choose from.” Making her giggle as you rolled your eyes as the twins both took another look at your chosen floor plans for the three story shop with a hidden basement opening under the floor of the store room formerly used as a bomb bunker from the Second World War, similar to those in each of the shops around it. Percy especially in the distracted conversations of the younger teens, along with Draco and Neville stole peeks at your design for the store front and sent you silent agreeing smiles.

“Andrew Ser?” Unfolding the Daily Prophet Percy was reading the back of, you stood facing one another in an awkward seeming deadlock with separate ends of the paper in hand to read your decided stories. “Dad!” Sirius leaned into view in the doorway adjusting his tie with a bagel between his lips, “Have you read this?”

He eyes the title of the story you had flipped to the second portion of, pulling the bagel out of his mouth, “Ah, ya, Andy, he’s been on about me for years. Determined to crack the case.”

Your head turned, “He’s trying to say you’re some sort of criminal. Says you’ve been hiding out at Hogwarts.”

Sirius nodded with a smirk at you, “Last year he said I was in the Bahamas. He always looses his wind eventually.”

“Says he’s gotten permission to search the school from Fudge.”

Remus chuckled, “As if we might have missed him last year.”

“Says he heard from Dolph he said he saw you.”

Sirius nodded, “Either way, he bothers you and you let us know.” You nodded and he moved closer cupping your cheek to kiss the other, “I’ll not have anyone bothering you over me. He’s no reason to pester you.”

You sighed, “Haven’t you heard, the Black Plague is rampant in Hogwarts?”

His eyes narrowed for a moment, in anger over the term concerning you and not your using it even in jest, “You are not a plague and have done nothing to deserve anyone’s mistrust.”

…

“Ah, who have we here?” Tilting your hat back your brow raised to the curly haired man with salt and pepper stubble standing just a few inches taller than you in your heels yet shorter than the twins around you who were both crossing their post growth spurt toned gangly arms over their chests at his puffed up smirk looking you over. At once you felt your blood boiling and exhaled slowly forcing yourself not to shift in the main lot to King’s Cross Station for enchanted vehicles. Avoiding a conflict you brushed your fingertips along the handle of your trunk at your side while you reminded yourself that you still were under probation for fighting at school and punching an Auror out of defending yourself would be severely frowned upon. “Young Miss Black. I do hope we can get to know one another better this year.”

Flatly you replied, “I’m not supposed to talk to strange Aurors.” His lips parted and you said, “If you want to get to know me I’ll have to get you cleared with Alastor Moody first.” Moving around him you shifted the bag holding Crookshanks across your back and steadied your owl’s cage in your other hand then stepped around him spreading the smirk on Remus’ face.

Straight to the new Professor Andrew Ser’s eyes shot in a fiery glare only making Remus chuckle, “Don’t blame me rules are rules. No telling who could be trying to cozy up to our dear girl here. Now, sod off, we’ve a train to catch.” Brushing past himself joining the line of teens in claiming trolleys for your luggage, continuing on as a group that grew a bit larger at Hermione’s trot over to claim hugs from you all in sharing a brief recap of her summer until you reached the barrier.

Passing over Crookshanks to Hermione you grinned adjusting your jacket over your t shirt and shredded jeans showing glimpses of the color changing orbs above a dragon with a Witches hat brewing up a potion across your knee high socks. The design matching the color changing style of the toads across the twins’ socks. Visible when they propped up a leg each to form a makeshift table for their latest series of sketches for the wrappers and packages for your recently perfected products. Soon you would be beginning to mingle together in a sort of ‘Sick Pass’ you had chosen to call Skiving Snackbox. Starting out with a simple based on teens market you would be easily be able to sell among fellow students.

Already you had the Lycan market covered with antivenoms as well. Of course the twins insisted you have a section devoted to uses for the various venoms you could collect for each of them, along with a possible chance to add in a few snake themed toys to ease worries of those with phobias of the usually misunderstood creatures. And with your connection to Dragon Tamers you could easily find protective garb for them and specialize burn creams and additional tries to mend scars as well.

Across from them you stared at the notepad on your lap while Cedric tried to restitch his buttons back onto his robes when his baby cousin had accidentally tugged them free admiring the Puff crest on them. Slowly your silver eyes danced across the page in your detailing an idyllic scene of you having tea with your blonde strangers while a morpher infant sat in the garden below playing with a group of bunnies and a goat. Blinking the finished image into focus you caught Cedric’s tilted head awkwardly craning his neck that snapped back in his stabbing his finger, “Ow!” raising his blood tipped finger to his lips he turned his head saying with a grin as the twins peered up at you, “Sorry, didn’t mean to snap you out of it.”

You shook your head taking the robe from him in return for the pad he inspected, “It seems I will be having tea with the mystery blondes and their friends, with a baby too.”

The twins set aside their sketch pads to shift over around Cedric as you righted the final button in their taking in each detail of the gently shifting image of the serious men and the boy’s giggling while you raised and lowered your cups for sips. “Woah. Any other images?”

Cedric flipped through finding more of their simply staring at you with one with paler hair atop a massive elk across from the other blonde holding a trio of dark haired boys through a lunch beside you holding the baby again. A snort came from Cedric, “Wow, you will be a baby making machine.”

Giggling to yourself you handed him back the finished jacket and put away his needle and thread, “Thank you. Though from the feeling I get, I think they’re adopted.”

Twins, “Still adorable. Four boys. Lot of work.” Making you giggle again.

Cedric, “You will be a wonderful Mum.”

“Thank you.” Accepting your pad back to close it and put it away to bring out the enchanted one you used to converse with Alastor making you sigh seeing the note you had written about Andrew still unanswered. Closing that you set it aside back in your bag, “Still nothing from Alastor.”

Cedric, “I doubt it could be like Patricia and Dolph again.”

George, “Dumbledore won’t let that happen twice.”

You nodded and eyed Cedric’s ledger from his father marking out proper times to prep for this year, at the end of which you would be sitting for your OWLS, he eyed the pages saying, “Dad hasn’t left much room. Down to the week on what to study and when.”

You chuckled and said with the Twins, “We’ll be up to speed in no time.”

Cedric chuckled saying, “No worries there. We’ve had tons of practice helping your older brothers and Tonks with theirs. Only problem is, knowing if this year is going to be like the last few distracting us all.” He wet his lips , “Any clue on who our new Professor is?”

You grinned saying, “Uncle Remus.”

Earning a chuckle from Cedric, “No worries there then. Should get some refreshers for what we should have learned last year easily enough.” Making you all chuckle again until Percy opened the door to your car with a quick grin to give you your assigned times to patrol the cars on the set timetable for all the prefects.

A song on the mastery of words came from the Sorting Hat, followed by a performance from you alongside the rest of the choir and enlarged Choir Frogs. Grins spread across the clapping students and Professors in the hall. In your seat at the Puff table you waited for Dumbledore to stand next calling out, “Welcome, welcome first years and a big welcome back to everyone else. For a few start of term notices, those of you who were here last year are aware that Professor Kettleburn has retired to keep what time he has left to, and to take his place this year will be none other than our own Rubeus Hagrid.”

The hall erupted into a wave of cheers and a subtle round of scoffs and jeers from the Slytherin table. “And as for our Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor R.J Lupin back among us to fill that position. Good luck Professor.” Chuckles rippled through the room while your head tilted seeing the black Irish wolfhound seated by Remus’ side he was patting the head of. “Finally on a more telling note, at the request of the Ministry of Magic, Hogwarts will, until further notice, play host to the Dementors of Azkaban.”

After a series of whispers he continued with a far from serious expression in a sort of ‘let us all play along’ glance over you all, “Until such a time Sirius Black is captured,” all eyes shifted to you then back again, “the Dementors will be stationed at every entrance on the grounds. Or else I am assured that their presence will not disrupt our day to day activities. A word of caution. For our first years, Dementors are vicious creatures, they will not distinguish between the one they hunt and the one who stands in their way. Therefore, I must warn each and every one of you to give them no reason to harm you. It is not in the nature of a Dementor to be forgiving.” His hands rose, “But you know, happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times.” His hand waved by his candle on the podium pulling it out, and then back again lighting it again, “If only one remembers to turn on the light.”

In the muddle of out crying students rising to your defense his hand rose again, “Quiet, quiet down now. You and I are comfortably aware of the truth to this matter. However,” a glint of humor flashed back in his eyes, “We must as always humor the matter until others are at comfort that there is no harm coming to the students of these halls. Fear and ignorance have been the downfall of many. To overcome those, we must all practice our tolerance, those unable to understand this lesson simply take notice of our own Miss Black, who is becoming quite adept at wading through that tricky stream.” His hands clapped, “Now, let us eat.”

Wetting your lips you caught Remus’ comforting nod you returned the nod and turned to your dinner you filled your plate with a full supply you dug into forcing your attentions to the conversing teens around you instead of looking around at those still irritated at this useless search. Shifting in your seat you drew in a breath then turned in your seat finding Harry already staring at you, forcing a grin on his face he eyed the slip of paper you held out to him he claimed with a pleased chuckle, “Petunia got a bit distracted. Sent this along with her letter.”

His mouth fell open eyeing the signed slip to go to Hogsmeade, “She signed it?!” his eyes rose to you, “How’d you manage this?”

You shook your head, “Didn’t. You gave it to her, she chose to sign it.”

Harry shook his head, “I still think you must have bewitched her or something.”

You shook yours again, “Must be the usual, look like Mum. 2nd chance and all that.” Turning back again his brows furrowed looking you over as your hair began to turn black from root to tip urging the twins to snuggle closer to your sides at your stabbing a piece of your food trying to focus on that to stop your mind from racing off to all those years ago.

In the end of your meal you stood along with the other prefects to guide your assigned groups of first years once the others had gone off to bed. Grins spread on the faces of those in your group eagerly following you along through the halls and dungeons through the safest path to the dormitory they all comfortably settled into when you had shown them the ways to discover their own assigned rooms. The first years were safely tucked away, and in the tower above the Library Percy and the chosen Head Girl Penelope from this year had settled into their assigned apartment, both hoping for some peace and quiet from their usually noisy dorms for their final exams off in June.

Your schedule for the following day set out pretty simply and without much cause for concern. One by one you made it through your courses and with an enjoyable lesson from Remus and down at 8pm you were elated to see the proud tan Hippogriff, who took a jaunty strut through your class straight for you to nudge you giggling between the twins and Cedric over to the clearing behind it. Laughing heartily Hagrid paused his lesson and guided you all over. “One more thing, ‘spose now would be the best time. Over the summer Arturo here and his mate, who is still off on her yearly molt, had their own cub.” He made his own fanfair music and waved his hand to the proud grey speckled Hippogriff posing with a confident squawk that died at his eyes falling to you four at Arturo’s squawking introduction of you all drawing the timid cub closer to you.

First you were nudged forward to give a nice bow the smirking cub fluffed his wings up and shifted on his feet for the perfect stance for his first bow he then gave to you. Giggling softly you rose up as he did then folded your arms around his neck at his head nuzzling into your chest. “He is adorable Hagrid.” You giggled out smoothing your fingers around the base of his head making him give a content hum in the drooping of his eyes. Next the boys took their own turn and you gave Arturo some attention of his own through Hagrid continuing his lesson plan after summoning his set up projector and blankets you all settled on with the Hippogriffs lounging beside you.

Each night through the assigned patrols the wide group of Prefects were divided. Thankfully you were off this night allowing you a chance to sleep deeply after downing a dreamless draught to help you sleep without waking up in tears, a task even Idris couldn’t aid you with avoiding with his finest song. Soundly on your back you slept with Opal nuzzled against your shoulder and head to calm her own worries at her sensing something was going on with you.

Your second day went well and in each again you were reminded how important this year was in the courses you had not seen the day before and given yet another stack of lesson plans listing each assignment in advance to grant those that are willing to work ahead for full credit to manage study times better. Your noon break was always kept for the RoR club, now growing in number with your fellow 5th years to get all the practice you could get. It wasn’t until your break at 6, once you had gone back to Divinations you could go back to your dorm to sit and look at this new selection of assignments. Just like the others you would go through ranking each and the simplest of each on your weekends you would try to complete beforehand to grant yourself a lighter load.

Magical Creatures, something about it today made your skin crawl, and halfway down the path to the course you eyed Andrew Ser. A cocky grin split across his face in his path straight for you, one that dropped as you nodded your head with a smirk of your own, “Mr Ser.”

His body turned for him to say, “Miss Black!”

Your hand rose to wave blindly back at him, “Can’t talk, have to get to class!”

More and more he would integrate himself into your schedule leading to your remaining inside your dorm or chosen corner of the library to focus on this stack of assignments you would complete and file in order tucked in a series of folders inside a folding file holder to aid you in turning them in on time. Three weeks you settled into this plan getting the majority of the easiest and basic outlines for the worst of them.
