👻 ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ─────────── it had been quite sometime since freddy had built a trap. the passion for it had diminished once his father began belittling his desires of mystery solving. with the gang all back together and a new mystery at hand ( their biggest one to date ). a sudden fire was lit in freddy’s belly. so, for the first time in a long time he was building a trap. he was at the park, far from people so that no one would get injured but as freddy was looking over his blueprints he heard a string of noises. he looked up only to see an innocent bystander tangled in his contraption. “ that wasn’t supposed to happen. ” he began. “ i mean .. it was just not with you in it. ”
*
Dani lay limp in the trap, staring up at the sky as she reconsidered every moment of her life until this point. It really was a new low for her. She could only shrug as the man spoke up. “It’s fine - this sort of thing seems to happen a lot to me lately.” It seemed to tighten around her as she finally gave effort to escaping. “Should I be concerned about how well this thing works?” Dani tried once more to hatch an epic escape before giving up entirely. “Guess I shouldn’t judge - some people knit for a hobby.” She shivered. “It could be something as boring as that.”

Effie had made a few rounds around the party already, enough cocktails in her system so that her legs felt a bit wobbly beneath her - but she was not ready to pack it in. It was party! She could see her brother’s band playing in the distance - and Davu had played quite the part in her teenage daydreams - no, she would be staying until the very end.
In its stead, she found a seat on top of the hood of a car, crossed her legs beneath her and slowly and carefully began to draw bubbles out of the air around them to send out into the party. Large ones, small ones, their numbers grew and she laughed happily as she watched the other partygoers play with her creations.

fran stood at the back with his husband and the remainder of the parents as the young crowd gathered in the center. it was entertaining to observe how energetic they all were. exuberant about the future. for fran, the experience had left them exhausted. however, the triplets wanted to come, and now they were here, playing catch up. lightning had stepped away to talk to one of his dear friends leaving the italian to take a seat to check their phone. they had to make sure that nina’s wedding flowers had been rearranged in the correct order. especailly after their little disagreement.
fran placed their phone in their jacket pocket as soon as they heard her voice. “dani. you are fashionably late "greeted with a tray of chips and dip in front of them. they couldn’t resist but take one. "we were always cool, but I’m not sure how my children now see me now.” they quipped with a playful wink.
“the enzo is infatuated. you should see his face. it lights up at the mention of the jasper. è così carino. but we’ll have to wait and see. what do you think? should we place a bet? you know i love a bit of friendly competition”
*
“Be late, bring food - no one can say Dani Dennison doesn’t know how to make an entrance.” Dani glanced over the room, taking in the who’s who of parents who had been dragged out that night. Effie was out there somewhere, happy and tipsy and drunk texting her mother about the different outfits out on the streets. “Well, kids are stupid so they don’t know what they’re talking about anyways.” She laughed. “I, for one, work hard to make sure Effie and Jasper know how cool I am and I am pretty near certain that hasn’t backfired even a little bit.” She never felt old but her kids made sure and reminded her often, both intentionally and not. “I got some of my old clothes from my parents the other day and Effie called them vintage - and I’m not sure why or how but I will find a way to blame you for that.” She grinned wide, laughter on her lips as she took a chip of her own and leaned back.
“I think the fact that Jasper chose a movie with Enzo over being here says it all...”
A mischievous smirk crossed over her face. “What do you think? We’ll have a wedding within three years...” She debated. “And if I’m right, you pay for the honeymoon.”

enzo was ecstatic that jasper had strangely agreed not to attend the party. well. they both had agreed in true rock, paper, scissors fashion. don’t get him wrong. people are cool. but not when there was a literal rain cloud hovering over ones head. now, that’s quite embarrassing. the two were both standing outside the deserted theater, which sent chill down his spine as he considered how creepy it was, trying to decide what type of film to watch. stuck between a comedy or the latest mystery thriller.
“what do you think?” enzo turned to face their friend, with pouted smile. “heads or tails? or-..you know i’ll watch whatever as long as we aren’t out here. it’s creeping me out jas”

The sounds of the party were faint - but a keen ear could pick them up. There was a part of him that wished he was there. Social media had been lit up with people’s pictures, parades and concerts and revelry, but he could also see - in a very literal way - why Enzo did not. He wasn’t going to abandon him like that - not even for the party of the decade.
“Creeping you out than a mystery thriller?” He asked over, eyes still checking out the movie posters in indecision. “It’s gonna be just as empty when we leave, too, and then we’ll have psychopathic murderers on the brain - so comedy? Let’s go with comedy.” Decision made, he grinned over. “My treat.”
Giving Enzo no time to argue, he jumped ahead and pulled out his wallet to order their tickets.

Dani slid through the crowd of twenty-somethings, balancing some nachos and a drink in her arms. Her intention had been to go straight to Club 33 but detours had been made, food had been bought - forever stuck in the space between far too old for this but a little ticked she had been relegated to hanging out with the other parents. But at least the company was decent as she slid into a vacant chair across from Francesco and offered over the tray of chips and dip. “I just dropped off Jasper and Enzo at the movies instead of coming to the party - so, good news, we are officially cooler than the both of them.”
“They’re getting married - I’m calling it now. My kids are all just collecting your name.” She smirked. “Granted, Bernoulli-McQueen-Dennison is a fucking mouthful.”

Dani Dennison
Dani’s life of adventure came to an abrupt end when Jasper was 7. For all intents and purposes, the boy was normal. He had never shown any magical aptitude, and why would he? There was nothing magical in Dani or his father. After everything was known, the signs were obvious, but hindsight is 20/20, and that May day, as a group of witches grew mad with even the prospect of the power his magic amplification would bring them, she was taken by surprise and he from her arms. An anklet for swiftness, rings to make her stronger, a necklace to see through any illusion - charmed tokens she had had made over the years simply to better her chances when the worst happened, and it was finally here. They had traveled through the forest for days with Jasper in her arms, pushing her talismans to their limits.
The world was not safe for him and she had barely managed to protect him - there was only one option and she took them swiftly back home. She rarely looked back, and though she tried to hide the overprotectiveness she felt, Jasper never left the town unless there was a strong magic user with him to keep him safe. Whether anyone noticed or not, she didn’t know, but she was certain it was the right decision for him.
But now he’s grown up and it’s time to let him go - but her fear lets the tendrils holding onto him linger... maybe for just a little bit longer. What could it hurt?
Effie Bernoulli
While her mother and brother traveled, Effie was forever happy to stay home with Francesco and Monty. She would accompany them on their adventures during the summer - but while they relished in the new sights and sounds, she was busy picking out the perfect souvenirs for her brothers and sisters. To this day, if you want to find Effie, look no further than her cottage, from her gardens, from the menagerie of animals that she cared for - the place where her own magic thrives and grows.
Jasper Dennison
Forever in the midst of any trouble being made, Jasper has spent the last few months testing the line into adulthood, independence. He’s eagerly watched as the number of viewers his and Theo’s show grew, more confident by the day that he might actually be ready for this. After years of floating, unsure, he knows now what he wants his future to be - if he can only figure out how to make it happen.

He laughed, warmed at the question. ❝ Like, we never eat less, ❞ he replied, glancing over at the plates. ❝ Like, I would love to teach a class if I thought it would do any good. We think it’s just because we spend a lot of time running, so, like, it burns off the calories, y'know? ❞ He patted his stomach thoughtfully before turning to give her his full attention.
Shaggy settled into the seat across from her and took the opportunity to change into his bowling shoes while he considered her questions. Her intrigue wasn’t anything new to him; in anything, the look in her eye was reminiscent of one he’d seen before in Velma and Freddy’s eyes. He just never understood what was so compelling about the mysteries. ❝ Like, I guess that depends who you ask. In my experience, it’s not, like, not true. ❞
The question of his name was hardly new to Shaggy. Her laugh pulled a small smile to his lips. ❝ Like, my hair used to hang in my eyes like a sheepdog’s. I, like, never wanted to cut it as a kid so that’s what people always described me as. That Shaggy boy… Like, eventually, it was just, like, Shaggy. ❞
*
“You’re basically an athlete then - that is all I am hearing and you cannot convince me otherwise.” Dani nestled into her seat, pulling her feet up into it with her. “I still feel like I could maybe go on your diet - I feel like this town keeps me running.” She would have loved to slow down, take her time, but it seemed like every moment she began to feel comfortable, something else reared its head, something evil, something dark, something really not much fun at all.
“It’s kinda freaky, right? Or is it just me? Sometimes I feel like it’s just me.”
There were no witches, no monsters, only normal every day people in the town where she grew up. What she understood as normal quickly unraveled under the weight of the new knowledge she’d attained. “Luckily, for every evil witch released on the masses, there is another who makes you tea and lets you help with her potions... so it all evens out I suppose.”
“I guess that makes sense then... Shaggy it is.” She grins across the table and picks out which hot dog was originally hers, drawing it into her lap. “I always wanted a fun nickname... Hot Shot... or Falcon, something awesome like that.”

Shaggy’s face lit up in a pleased smile at the compliment to Scooby, shifting to settle one of the stacks on the dog’s back carefully. ❝ Like, I appreciate the offer, ❞ he said, setting a few of the lighter plates into her awaiting palms. ❝ Like, they said we could take a couple trips if we needed, but Scoob and me are pretty used to the load. ❞
Once they’d returned to the lane he’d reserved and situated the plates carefully on the table, he finally offered her a hand. ❝ Like, my name is Norvile, but like, forget that and call me Shaggy. Everyone does. This is my best pal, Scooby-Doo. We’re, like, new here from Coolsville. ❞
*
“You guys eat like this all the time?” Dani asked with large eyes, sizing up the plates as she balanced hers alongside the ones he still held. “You know, I don’t really know anything else about you but I think you might be living my dream life. Do you give classes? Do you need an apprentice? Teach me your ways.” She laughed, sincere in her awe of how they managed it.
She grinned as she shook his hand. “Dani, it’s a pleasure to meet you both. I’ve heard of Coolsville - a lot of weird stuff goes on there, that’s what I read. Is it true?” Any goal of hers to avoid thought of magic and mystery went out the window as she rested her chin in her hand and gave Shaggy her attention. “Also why do they call you Shaggy? That’s nowhere even close to Norville.” She laughed.

Roxanne was so miserably homesick that it was getting hard for her to deal with. Al morning while she got ready to run errands it gnawed at her heart and and followed her around. It was still there when she got to the laundromat with her clothes. She tried to ignore it but it refused to go away so she grabbed her phone and sifted through her music collection until she found her favorite Powerline album and checked to make sure she was the only person in the laundromat before pushing play and letting the pop music filter through the room. She danced as the music played, reminded of the good time she’d spent with Stacy and her other friends. Somehow, that helped.

Dani came into the laundromat to a near concert. Music was playing, a girl was dancing around. The fact that this had now happened twice in her life was... really two times more than she ever thought possible. She wasn’t complaining but this was certainly never what she expected being a grown up to be like.
Sliding her basket up onto one of the machines to claim it, she slipped over to the other girl and tapped her shoulder. “May I have this dance?” She asked with a bright grin as the other woman faced her.

starter for : 𝙾 𝙿 𝙴 𝙽
location : gutters [ bowling alley ]
The bowling alley was busier than they were used to, the sound of laughter mixing pleasantly with the crash of pins. Moving to Elias had been an adventure all it’s own, one he hadn’t been fully prepared for. He never realized how much work it was just to move from one place to another, being stuck in Coolsville for a lifetime now. Even he found it hard to believe that he’d been so used to roaming from place to place, meeting new people and making new friends every few days. Moving again was nostalgic and, when he met the right people, warm and exciting.
It wasn’t all it was cracked up to be as he carefully stacked the collection of plates onto his forearms. Scooby-Doo was walking at his side, pawing aggressively at the green vest over his shoulders with every step. The lanky man glanced down at him as much as he could without disrupting the balance of his food tower.
❝ Like, I know you don’t like it, but we’re not in Coolsville anymore, old buddy. ❞ He offered the great dane an apologetic smile. ❝ Like, business owners here need to see your vest or you won’t be allowed inside with me – Zoinks ! ❞ He stumbled as he accidentally knocked into the other person, nearly falling over. He managed - with a little help from Scooby - to save the food. ❝ I’m, like, so sorry. I didn’t see you. Are you okay? ❞
*
Dani had decided, you know what, she was young, and vibrant, and smart, and yet had dedicated her life to magic - which she didn’t even have. She was just learning about it... helping people who did have it... it was no way to live life.
She had agreed to go out bowling with kids from a study group at school, her goal clear, just have fun. No thinking about anything but the elusive now.
It was working so-so, finally excusing herself to go get some food. She played with her phone as she walked, not looking up until she ran into a very solid form ahead of her. His apology seemed unwarranted considering she hadn’t been doing anything even resembling watching where she was going. “No, no, I should’ve been watching - I don’t even have a cute doggo to use as an excuse. Let me make up for it,” Dani offered as she held out her hands, “Can I carry some plates for you to your seat?”

fran remained motionless, gaze fixed on the her. observing her as she took a dirnk of the water. she was a little younger than him, so it was no surprise that she didn’t understand what he was saying. he was fine with it and completely understood. for him, they had grown up seeing more than most people. it was awe-inspiring to watch her curiosity. they laughed softly to himself; his good looks had a way of drawing people’s attention. they were powerful. the italian used to referred it as a “hidden set of powers."it seemed they were still working.
“impressionante”
"lets not give our secrets away. that young man, he likes you. he is not stupid and knows bellezza.”
“ my face. it has gained many experiences but never ice cream” trying to keep up with her small steps. he found himself smiling, enjoying their little chat, which was serene and approachable and at times familiar. “if you are ever in europe. i will make sure you get the grand tour”
*
“Hell yeah, he knows bellezza.” Dani laughed, playful in her cockiness. She was not necessarily a cocky person but even she was aware enough to know that guys weren’t just giving away ice cream to every girl that came in. At least she hoped not - she was really going to have to reconsider every bit of her confidence for the last month if so. “But thank you...” She added on sincerely, acknowledging the compliment in it all. It twisted a deep ache in her, missing Francesco, missing his father, the cheerleader and biggest fan of all who needed it - or at least Dani when she needed it.
She smiled up warmly, a slight mischief. “Well it is now. I’ll take you up to the house and then out for ice cream, all because of your face - and also because we’re new friends and you’re new to town and called me beautiful - but we’ll tell everyone it is just because of your face.” Her shoulder nudged his arm. “And you can tell me where in Europe you will take me first when I go.”
“Where is your favorite place?”

where: mama ode’s cafe
velma had been warned ahead of time that downtown elias would be packed on the weekends, but she hadn’t expected to have such a hard time finding a place to sit. after scoping out a couple different restaurants, she finally caught sight of a single open seat in a booth occupied by one. weaving her way through crowds and tables, she made a beeline to the booth, exhaling a dramatic breath as her eyes locked on another’s.
she sat down.
“ tell me everything you know about this town and i’ll pay you, ” she said as she pulled out her laptop and set it down in front of her..“ five dollars for every piece of information i find useful. ”
*
Dani instantly put down her fork, counting out on her fingers how many useful facts she might know. She bet she could at least pay for today’s meal... after a moment’s consideration of counting and thinking, she announces, “I’m in.”
“The school was founded in 1928 by Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Mickey might be a hologram at this point because he is only every briefly spotted - Minnie owns the flower shop though and is as solid as she is sweet. It really does a number to my hologram theory but I will find a way around it. Oh, the flower shop is just around the corner there.” She pointed.

“ oh, no that’s okay. ” he said, but she went ahead and started to sing. it definitely sounded made up, but he wasn’t going to point that out. and probably all town songs were technically made up. “ the… monster thing ? ” had he made some big mistake coming here? varian hadn’t wanted to listen to his father and technically he was staying away from the black rocks. by running away and attempting to find a way to save his town from said rocks. anyways, he was on a mission and well, if there was danger in this town then he’d just have to face it. “ i’m sure it’ll be fine. ” he said, mostly to himself.
“ oh, well, um. that’s actually a long story. there are some magical rocks in the town i’m from and they’re not good. destroying everything in their path and everything. so i’m here trying to find someone with magic to help. ” was it more complicated than that? absolutely. did he want to get into it with someone that he just met? not really. he followed her finger and nodded. at some point he’d have to try. “ nice. okay. putting that on my list of places to try. ”
varian couldn’t imagine being somewhere without ruddiger, so he had to come with him. “ he actually isn’t much of a pet. more like my best friend. i’m not well liked in my town. something about being to eager and well… ruddiger he’s my best friend. after i quit trying to get rid of him. ” varian laughed at the earlier days of their friendship. the raccoon chirped, happy to be getting attention. “ i think he likes you. which makes it official, you are now my official first friend. ”
*
“Oh... you haven’t heard... there was a monster attack, just before the holidays. It was pretty bad... a lot of people we were kinda counting on to keep us safe got their asses kicked, which wasn’t great for morale...” The more Dani talked about it, the more she desperately needed to ask someone why in the world the bad guys were still just traipsing around town - but the writing was on the wall. Dani was more the town mascot than someone people actually listened to.
Magic rocks... she had to consider this as she walked, pulling up any similar stories she might have encountered in her studies. “Do they move? Or are they, like, just popping up places?” She asks. “Do they seem to have any sort of intelligence?” As far as she was concerned, the topic was a brand new one - and if she was going to solve the mystery, she was going to need some answers - and she was always looking for excuses to dive into Howl’s books for research. She didn’t know the exact moment she’d turned into a total nerd about things but she was very much at peace with it.
“Hold up, I’m sorry, all those people can go fuck themselves - there is nothing wrong with being too eager. I mean, nine times out of ten, I’m off somewhere being too eager. That’s how you get results.” Dani defended, mumbling about it a moment more. His next statement did have her smiling wide, though, grinning up from Ruddiger’s pets. “I’m honored. I promise I take my friend responsibilities very, very seriously... and Ruddiger can just stay with me if you ever get rid of him. I have a new apartment that allows small dogs - so surely a raccoon will be no issue.”

he didn’t feel comfortable leaving ruddiger on his own just yet. elias was unfamiliar still and there were a lot of people that thought raccoons were pests. well, to be fair, he was assuming that based on the fact that he thought raccoons were pests. except he couldn’t get rid of ruddiger. and didn’t want to.
“ well that’s good to know for the next newcomer i come across when i’m a hardened eliasian. ” varian smiled. “ nice to meet you dani. i’m varian karuse. ” his face lit up as she said she was heading to the same place that he was heading to. “ great ! that’s good to know i don’t completely suck at directions. or well, the ones that were given to me were horrible, but maybe i’m just also bad at not getting distracted. there’s so much here. ” varian made a mental note to check the diner out at some point. chocolate pancakes sounded really amazing. “ those sound really yummy. ”
“ oh, ruddiger, ” varian picked up the raccoon. “ yeah, if you want. his favorite food is apples. so if you know where to get those you’ll be his best friend. ”
*
“I’ll teach you our town song - oh Elias, oh Elias, you’re pretty neat when there aren’t monsters...” Dani sang for a moment, making it up as she went, before interrupting herself, “No worries, the monster thing only happened once. Was it very recently? Yes. Have they fixed it so it doesn’t happen again? Eh, not really. Do we know who did it but no one’s actually done anything about that? Also yes, but I’m sure it’s gonna be cool.” She felt less than certain on that point but she tried to smile all the same.
“So when you’re not being distracted, what brings you to Elias? Do you go to the university, too?” For her own well-being, she needed a subject change, stopping their stroll to point back behind them. “When you decide to try them, it’s that building over there.” She pointed the way she had come from and tipped her shake. “They also make good milkshakes.”
She was petting Ruddiger’s head in an instant. “I’m going to bring you so many apples, I promise. Yes, I am.” She wasn’t sure how one went about getting a pet raccoon but she would be finding out, happily scratching behind his ears.

varian was not actually very good with directions. someone had given him a vague sense of direction when he mentioned where he wanted to go, but he didn’t know anything aside from that, directions were not his favorite thing to figure out. he didn’t know if he’d even be in elias long enough to learn the town, but even if he was, he would probably get lost on occasion because he got distracted easily. once he got distracted doing an errand for his dad. when someone offered to help, varian immediately perked up, causing ruddiger to jump at his sudden movement. “ it’s okay, ” he held out his hand to the raccoon and pulled out an apple from his bag to give to his companion. “ well, i was hoping to pick up a few things at howl’s but i don’t know where that is and someone gave me vague directions, but those aren’t exactly helpful. ” he knew he was rambling, though that was a common occurrence for him. “ wow, ” varian grinned at her. “ it’s an honor to be shown around by someone as important as you. ” he knew she was joking, so he just played along with the joke. “ who is mama odie ? is she like one of those figureheads that a place made up just to sell things but she doesn’t actually exist or is she real ? ” varian looked around wondering if mama odie was going to come out of nowhere and curse him for saying she wasn’t real.
*
He. Had. A. Pet. Raccoon.
Dani really had to time this right. So many questions flooded her mind. Was it friendly? Would it let her pet him? Would the boy let her pet it? How long would it let her pet it?
Truthfully, most of the questions revolved around the specificities of petting.
“Of course. Elias rolls out the VIP treatment for all newcomers.” She giggled. “I’m Dani, by the way. Dani Dennison. I was actually heading back to Howl’s so you can just walk with if you like. You weren’t far off.” But she really had to mentally pause and consider his next question, nose scrunching up as she replied, “You know, I don’t know... but the pancakes are too good to be believed, that’s for damn sure. They have special ones with chocolate chips and powdered sugar on top... no mere human could have invented something so amazing - so she must have been an ultra powerful cosmic being.”
“Now - I have questions about your racoon, like can I pet him? That’s the main question really.”

alejandro let out a laugh. “ yeah you might be right. now stay the fuck over there before drunk dick derek comes and pulls a hannibal on your ass. ” it was a joke, of course - but you never knew what these crazy dudes were into these days. there was a beat of silence as he looked to her and then to the bic in her hand. “ thanks, ” he mumbled as he reluctantly took the lighter from her and sparked up. she seemed a little too young to be pulling a pack of cigarettes out of her bag, but who was he to judge ?
regardless, he had to ask. “ so… what are you, like twelve ? ”
*
“I would make a rather pretty skin suit.” Dani notes with a laugh. “And considering the time we’ve all been having, if I ended up killed by some regular human psycho? What a let down.” She assumed he knew she was joking. It seemed like her sense of humor had gotten darker over time - but the more she saw, the more she needed new ways to cope. Trying to make light of things, it was what got her through when nothing in the world felt light in the slightest. For example, everyone thought she was 12! “I’m nearly 20... or 21 if this is a test to determine if you’ll let me in. Not that you look that much older.” She points out. “Let’s be honest, how old do you look without the mustache?”
