There was just something off tonight. Maybe the hours in the air were starting to affect you. No one in the detachment had trained so hard in their careers and bodies were at breaking point. Maybe the locals were feeling a little too common, you weren't sure. There was just something not quite right, and while no one was saying anything, everyone could feel it.

It would be a one-drink maximum and you'd all get out of there.

The moon told the story as it hung round and red high above. “That guy has been watching you all night,” Jake muttered beside you, sipping his beer.

“He's allowed to look, don't blame him, really,” you joked and looked to where Jake nudged his head. Not your type, but catching his eye sure made him look like the cat that got the cream. He grinned widely and talked to his friends, keeping his eyes on you the whole time. “He’s not going to touch.”

“I don't like the look of him. He looks like he's had one too many,” Jake told you.

“I don't need protecting, Hangman,” you reminded him, kindly. It wasn't just Jake though, all of your friends had their own hero complexes. If you were uncomfortable, you'd be swept away by Javy, Bob, Mickey, anyone. There was an endless queue of men lining up to protect your honour.

It was great and terrible all at once.

“I know you're quite capable of taking care of yourself,” Jake softened. “Just one more?” he waved the beer bottle as you nodded and he went to the bar. You chatted to Rueben for a while until you felt a warm body sidling to yours. Assuming it was Jake back, you looked up with a bright grin. You paused, face to face with the guy from earlier, encouraged by your apparent enthusiasm to see him. Bad move, you realised as he held a drink towards you.

“Flying early, sorry,” you apologised. You weren't going to take a drink from anyone that you didn't know, especially here.

“Oh, you're a pilot?” he asked, noting your lack of uniform as his gaze ran up and down your body. As a personal rule, you never wore your uniform out - was it necessary to put civilians in the place when they got the wrong idea about your role, rank or the rest that came with life in the Navy? Sometimes you just wanted a night off. You let Jake and Javy parade around in their khakis, it was an easy way to get laid. Good luck to them. But not you.

“Uhh, yeah,” you nodded. “Thanks for the drink though, huh?” you said, turning back around, taking that one step closer to Reuben who keenly watched the exchange. He knew you could handle yourself, but he could smell the booze pouring off this guy and didn’t want you to get caught in the middle of anything.

“Here ya go, sweetheart,” Jake announced loudly, sliding between you and the guy, turning to smile widely at your new friend. “So kind of you to offer our girl a drink, son,” he said as you sighed. That was exactly how most fights started around here.

“Could have just said you had a boyfriend instead. Jesus...” the guy muttered.

You saw Jake’s jaw twitch. “You one of those dudes that don’t think men and women can be friends?” he asked kindly, his accent that little deeper as his frustration increased.

“Look, man, I dunno who you are, but I was just trying to be nice and offer the bitch a drink. She said no, I’m cool,” he said. He sure didn't seem cool.

Jake’s jaw twitched again. Jake was not cool. Not cool at all.

“Bitch,” you repeated to yourself. Frankly you'd heard worse, but this boy didn't know you well enough to deign you with the pleasure of destroying in front of every patron in the bar. “Jake, please don’t - ” you tried.

“Now, that’s not nice,” Jake said evenly, and you weren’t surprised when Rooster imposed his frame beside Jake. He gave you a pleasant grin over his shoulder. He fucking lived for a good fight, verbal or physical Bradley wasn't picky, it was the worst thing about these two being wingmen. They got into scraps often... and without hesitation, the other idiot would be backing him up without question. They were always the last ones standing too, leaving you and the rest of the team begging bar tenders not to call the cops and dragging them out before scrapes were visible.

“I don’t know where you learnt your manners, but you are definitely going to apologise to my friend,” Jake continued. You’d never been so embarrassed.

“I’m not doing shit,” the guy snipped, a couple of his friends joining him. He looked at you. “Look at the fuckin’ trouble you’ve created. Slut. Bet they all take their turns unloading on you, huh?”

“Jesus Christ,” Rooster muttered, bouncing on his toes. It was itching to lay into him. You swore you heard Jake’s knuckles crack amid the noise and chaos that threatened to spill.

“Jake, he’s a dick. He’s not worth it,” you tried again, slinking between them, vying for Jake’s attention. you held his face. “Hey, I don’t need my honour defended over some dropkick who thinks he’s worthy of my time. Let’s go outside - ”

Jake stared at you hard before he thrust behind him, keeping you out of harm's way as drinks were thrown and screaming erupted. Rooster, Reuben and Javy were in the middle of it before you realised Jake was dragging you away from the mess around you, guiding you outside.

“Jesus Christ, Jake,” you pushed him away. “That was the stupidest fuckin’ thing I’ve ever seen. What the hell is wrong with you?”

“He was insulting you,” he defended himself.

“You’re insulting me, ignoring my wishes like that.”

He didn’t say anything, a little embarrassed.

“I took care of it. He was just some idiot.”

Looking over his shoulder, he could see that 'just some idiot' was now begging mercy, pinned between Rooster and Javy, a look of sheer terror crossing his face. “I won’t let them put their hands on you.”

"It's not up to you, Jake, to protect me. You run your mouth and escalate something I had under control."

Gazing back at you, he replied, "I don't want anyone to put their hands on you."

You sighed. It was no secret how Jake felt about you to anyone, especially you. But he respected your wishes of wanting your career and sacrificing relationships, including friendships if that may be, to further yourself, it was one of your personal stipulations. "I know," you said softly. And maybe one day, you'd feel the same as Jake, or any other partner that came along. But right now you were doing well for you.

"Just know, I can't always be there," he quietly reminded you.

"I know that too..." you reached out and hugged him, his entire body enveloping you. You heard the door open, and the noise from inside interrupted you as the guy form earlier left with his friends. They muttered as Jake released you, he still kept wary of them until they were in their Uber's, all way too drunk to drive home. "Come on, let's finish that beer and get the hell outta here."

so let’s set up the story for you..

you guys have to go to a planet because they sent a distress signal, and it was just some galra that voltron had to take down, which was easy-peasy

and you come across their pets which are some space cats (normal cats, just larger and different colors like pink and stuff)

you lose your shit

you run up to them and you’re kinda making the face pidge made when she saw the robot from that one episode where lance got handcuffed to a tree lmao

one of them didn’t have an owner and you looked at the team, (mostly shiro and allura) like “cAn i kEeP iT??”

and they just couldn’t say no to you

pidge was kinda scared bc like wtf were you going to feed it?? was it going to steal you from her??

plus she grew up having a dog (we love bae bae) she’s kinda new with cats

the cat follows you around everywhere, and almost never leave your side

and the cat is kinda possessive over you, so when pidge is tryna spend time with you, the cat comes up and gives her a death glare

pidge swore she hated her

but eventually, she gets comfy around you and pidge. and it got to the point where she would wait at the entrance thing for pidge to come back suring missions 🥺

Hunk

so he first meets you when your planet is being attacked by galra

he swoops down, and protects you and your family from a large blast from the fleet

you see the big space kitty and you’re like “🥺 it’s so cute”

your whole family is like, “wtf is wrong with you, we almost died”

and eventually you meet voltron and you’re like “omg your space cats are so cute 🥺”

lance fr said some, “what the fuck-“

and you looked at hunks armor and was like, “hey you were the one that saved me :)”

and y’all talk and stuff and he’s really awkward bc like “omg this cute person is talking to me and she likes my lion”

and he takes you to meet the lion and you go up to it, and it lowers it’s head to you and you fucking scratch it’s chin like dhhdhdn

but yeah hunk is now officially in love eith you so this is not the last time you see him

Lance

you two just back home from the war, and were taking a break from things to ease everyone’s minds before going back into space

you’ve heard pidge talk about how she had a dog at home named bae bae, and you were extremely excited to meet him

so when you finally got the chance, you dragged lance with you to meet him

and you were in awe when you saw him

you ran over and met the dog, and you let him sniff you first because you respect dogs, and started petting him and playing with him

lance fr started getting jealous lmao

but he also thought it was really cute how much you loved animals, which was also shown on the palace with the mice

when you got back home, you sat together in a comfortable silence, until you broke it by adking him if you guys could get a dog once the war was over

and his heart melted because it’s so domestic and he’s soft for that shit

so duh

he says yes

he loves dogs too so like hell yeah

'I know I told them I could do this, but where am I even going?' You thought to yourself as you looked around the Heartslabyul maze "oh no..." You finally spoke, sighing as you looked up at the towering hedge "where am I even supposed to go?" You slumped your shoulders as you held the parcel in your hand. Before you could finally sit down for a break a jingle of a bell could be heard, and within a moment "Y/N!!!" Catherine shouted out, pouncing onto you. Surprised by the cat beastfolk you jumped, starting to fall over with her on top of you. Catherine's eyes widened as she quickly flopped you, taking the fall as you landed on top of her. "Gah, are you okay?!?" You squeaked.

Catherine giggled, wincing slighty "I'm fine, what about you luv?" She tilted her head "I'm fine, you broke my fall.... Wait the package?!!!" You freaked, looking around frantically. Catherine chuckled, whistling to get your attention. And when she got it she pointed to her tail, swaying while having the ribbon of the parcel around it "Seemed valuable, so I didn't let it fall" she purred proudly. Shyly you got off of her, brushing yourself off to which Catherine followed suit "So, why are you in the hedge maze? " her ears flicked as she grabbed the package from her tail.

"Oh right! I promised to bring new teacups and then got lost..." You looked down, embarrassed. "Aww, well this dorm can be a bit confusing huh?" She smiled as she took your hand "Lucky for ya, the queen's guard kit is here to help!" She gave a fanged smirk as she started to lead you. "Wait, don't you have to watch the dorm?" You protested but she shook her head "I had to make a bloke bugger off not to long ago and sorta made an example of him so we'll be fine" she gave a carefree smile, contrary to her words "Now come on, don't just stand there like a lemon" she teased.

it is basically impossible to talk to @softersteve and not want to write something 💙🥺in this case.....1.7k of Indiana winteriron, one smol cat, and a diner

“We don’t have to go out,” Tony says for what must be the millionth time.

“Sweetheart, you really can stay here. Honestly, Alpine would be thrilled if you did,” Bucky adds, looking over at the cat. She’s curled up on the center of the couch and blinks one eye open, as if to say, see what you’re missing? before going back to sleep.

It’s not that Tony doesn’t want to go run errands and get dinner with Bucky. Even if it is nearly too cold to function out there, on a normal day he still wouldn’t mind. Or, at least, not as much. But his throat and head have been bothering him for most of the day, and his nose has the kind of runny-stuffy feeling that lets him know he’s definitely coming down with something, and being outside will only make it worse.

“I don’t want you to go out by yourself,” Tony murmurs. He tucks his face into Bucky’s shoulder, letting his eyes close for a second. Just a second, though, because at the rate he’s going, a second too long and he’d be asleep.

“We just need a few things for the weekend. Cat litter, for one thing, and something to make for dinner so we don’t starve or order out the whole time you’re here. Figured we can go to the diner tonight, though?” Bucky suggests.

The little Shelbyville Diner was like something out of a movie, Tony often thought. The waitresses all treated them like family, asking after their health and the cat, and had accepted Tony into the fold with a smile and a sly look between them. Tony, king of New York City galas and wooing people with a smile at every turn, found that he was nervous in the presence of these kind, genuine people, and had let Bucky do the talking on their first couple of trips. Tonight, he’s craving pancakes, though with how he’s feeling he’ll probably let Buck do a fair share of the talking once again.

“Sounds good to me, Bucky-Bot,” Tony says. He clears his throat as they set out the door, and Bucky shoots him a look.

“What?”

“You know what. You’ve been doing that all day. Are you sure you wanna be out here? It’s fucking freezing, doll.”

At Tony’s resolute nod, Bucky sighs, then turns back to the house. When he comes back, he has a navy blue knit scarf in his hand. “Here. Take this at least,” he says. He doesn’t wait for a response before he winds it around Tony’s neck, tucking it in tightly and using the end to pull Tony to him, brushing a kiss over his cheek.

“Better.”

“Speak for yourself, I look like Frosty the Snowman.” Tony pretends to pout, but he is much warmer with the scarf, both because it really is thick and warm, but also, privately, because it’s Bucky’s, tied with a level of care no one would expect from the Winter Soldier.

“Hey, I think ya look like a million bucks, doll. I’ll drive. It’s too icy for the bike.”

As much as Tony loved pressing himself in against Bucky’s back as he drove, the idea of the icy wind in his face is enough to make him shiver. Driving suited him just fine on a day like this, thank you very much. Bucky rests a hand on his knee as they drive, and between that and the hea running through the car, Tony has to fight to keep his eyes open.

“Medicine,” Bucky says, eyeing Tony as he drives.

“Mm?”

“We’ll need to get something for you, I don’t think I have anything at home,” Bucky says.

The word hangs there between them, warm and welcome and... confusing. Tony wants to reach out and grab it, tuck it away for later, when he can examine it, the way it makes him feel.

Home.

It’s funny, how Indiana, this place he’s constantly visiting, now feels more like home than New York ever had.

“Oh,” Tony says, because he’s tired and probably getting sick and Bucky’s bright blue eyes seem to peer right into him. “Right. Yes, we should. Get some. For home.”

Bucky smiles the rest of the way to the store.

“This one? Or… this one says intense. Do your symptoms feel intense? I guess we can get one of each?” He studies the bottles in his hands, eyebrows furrowing.

Tony wraps his arms around Bucky’s waist from behind, nuzzling into his neck before peeking over his shoulder at their options. “Both,” he says. He rubs at his nose. “Why not. If you get whatever this ends up being then we’ll be prepared in the event of Super Soldier illness. That will be intense.”

Bucky snorts but tosses both bottles into the basket at his feet.

When they get to the pet supplies aisle, Tony’s face lights up. “I think Alpine needs something…”

“She does. Litter, and maybe some food…”

“And this,” Tony proclaims, holding out a toy mouse, whose ears easily made up half of its body. “She ripped a leg off the one she has.” She’d presented it to Tony proudly that morning.

Bucky rolls his eyes but smiles. “You spoil her.”

“P-pot, kettle,” Tony says with a sniffle. He turns to rub at his nose, but that only serves to make matters worse, and he sneezes a few times into the elbow of his sleeve. Soft, muffled Hh’Utssh! Eeiish! sneezes that leave him more sniffly than anything else.

“Bless you, doll. Tissues next, I think,” Bucky says, taking Tony’s hand in his as they walk. It’s nothing, really, a small offer of affection, but Tony squeezes Bucky’s hand as they walk, warmth coursing through him.

“I almost forgot how cold it was, just like that,” Tony groans when they get back to the car, a gust of icy wind whipping through them.

“Sorry, sweetheart. We can skip the diner, if you’d rather go home? We bought more than enough stuff.”

Home. There’s that word again, doing things to Tony’s already fragile chest.

“We can still go. Pancakes sound so good right now,” Tony confesses, already imagining the soft warmth of them.

“Pancakes it is.”

Shelbyville Diner is mostly empty when they arrive, which, given that it’s only four o’clock and freezing outside, isn't much of a surprise. By the time they slide into the booth, though, Tony is a mess of congestion, and his whole body feels tired, like he could sleep for a week. He doesn’t argue when Bucky slips in beside him, pressing in close, shoulder to thigh in the back of the empty diner.

“How we feelin’, doll?” Bucky asks, though Tony is positive he can tell just how bad he’s feeling. They hadn’t even been out for very long, but between the flight the day before, the cold symptoms working their way through him, and the warmth of the diner, Tony’s exhausted.

“Tired,” he admits. He shrugs out of his coat, but leaves the scarf on, at least for now.

“Food should help warm you up. Then medicine when we get back...”

“Alpine’ll be glad for the extra attention I’m sure,” Tony adds.

“And so will you.” Tony can’t argue there, he always felt a little like he'd won something when Alpine decided to curl up on his lap.

He pretends to study the menu, though he knows he’s getting chocolate chip pancakes like he does almost every time they come here, and listens to Bucky debate between an omelette and a wrap. Tony rests his head against the back of the booth. It smells like coffee, even congested Tony can smell it, and syrup, and comfort, if he had to give a name to it, tucked away back here with Bucky. More and more, pieces of Indiana were starting to feel like home.

When the waitress brings out their meals, chocolate chip pancakes for Tony and a buffalo chicken wrap for Bucky, she sets the plates down and clucks her tongue.

“You look like you could use a nap, darlin’,” she says. She looks at Bucky. “You take good care of him, you hear?”

Bucky smiles, looking over at Tony. “That’s the plan, ma’am.”

It’s dark when they get back, February in Indiana means night falling at an ungodly hour, and Tony swears it’s colder than ever.

“Sweetheart, I think it’s just you,” Bucky says, his voice soft by Tony’s ear. He insists on unpacking everything himself, marching Tony over to the couch and instructing him to cuddle the cat.

“Don’t let him go anywhere,” Bucky tells Alpine seriously. She studies them both before mewing as if in agreement.

“Traitor,” Tony mutters, but he’s smiling despite himself. He’s ready to give into his cold symptoms, even let Bucky fuss at him to take medicine. They had more than enough now, he thinks fondly. Tissues, too. Bucky insisted on two boxes of the extra soft ones, and Tony didn’t argue. Now, pressing his nose into a handful, he’s thankful for it.

“He takes good care of us,” Tony says to Alpine. She’s settling herself in on his lap, apparently deciding the blanket he has over him looks like the perfect spot for her after dinner nap.

“You talkin’ about me?” Bucky asks, reappearing in the living room with two steaming mugs. He’s changed into sweatpants and a thick sweater, and he just looks soft. He pads over to the couch and sets the mugs on the coffee table, tucking himself in beside Tony and Alpine on the couch.

“Might’ve been,” Tony says, letting his head rest on Bucky’s shoulder. At this rate he’d be asleep before his tea cooled enough to drink it. “And then here you are, tea in hand, my own personal knight in shining armor.”

Bucky laughs, stretching out and wrapping an arm around Tony’s shoulder. “Warm enough?”

Tony looks at Bucky beside him and Alpine on his lap, the nest of blankets around them. Steam curls off the mug on the table and Tony thinks he’s maybe never been this warm before.

He nods, the realization dawning on him once again. “Happy to be home.”
